They told me that the furniture wasn't of sufficient quality to survive the move. Bullshit. why then did it survive two previous moves? Weeks later, after many calls, they delivered 10 additional boxes; heavily damaged. Our furniture is broken. Our Xmas ornaments are missing. They were rude and horrible about it. When we moved house in the summer of 2020, we got 2 quotes, one from Robb &Messer and one from another company. The R&M quote came in around 20% higher than the other quote but we thought that was a price worth paying for a 'Diamond Certified' company that had great online reviews. I would like to agree with most reviews that the various team members have been polite, friendly and punctual -- unfortunately, that is where the positives end in our experience. The issues started when they came to pack the furniture. The actual price they charged us was $2,300 over their estimated price. This was despite the fact that their estimate involved an onsite visit from a member of R&M crew who noted each and every piece of furniture in every room and the contents of every cupboard and drawer. Yet still, the estimate was off by almost 25%. To add insult to injury, because our furniture would then go into storage for 9 months, that also meant that our monthly storage fees were higher - and not just by 25% - but almost 60% higher than they had estimated. In hindsight, this was classic bait and switch - lowball the estimate and then whack them with a higher price when it's too late for them to back out. Then came the delivery of the furniture from storage into our new home 9 months later. The fact that our new home is located on a very narrow street was discussed well ahead of time when we scheduled our move date, and we were told everything would be transported via 3 smaller trucks.  And yet when we called a couple days prior to the move just to check all was on schedule (as no one had reached out to us for just a courtesy confirmation), we were told just one giant semi-truck would be sent.  We were asked whether we needed a city permit to park it or if we knew any neighbors to ask them to move their cars and block off spaces -- none of these things we had any idea about as we didn't know the area or neighbors and by that time, there wasn't much we could have done even we did. Fortunately, some of our new neighbors were awake at 7am on the day and were able to move their cars for the enormous R&M truck. Then the unloading started -- the R&M team slowly moved the furniture in and then rushed the assembly at the end of a very long day. We only noticed afterwards that some bed legs were only partially screwed in, dining table legs were incorrectly installed, and some visibly broken furniture had been assembled without mentioning the fault to us.  And, speaking of broken furniture.... So far, we have discovered about 20 pieces of furniture that were broken.  And I'm not just talking about glasses or mirrors - they managed to smash a 400 lb concrete table, a bar stool made of 2 inch thick cast iron, a 7 foot tall hanging lamp, there were broken garden benches, sunbeds, cabinets, tables and obviously a host of smashed glass and mirrors.  Sadly some of these items we have owned for 25 years and have travelled with us from London to NY, NY to London, London to Singapore, Singapore to Hong Kong, Hong Kong to San Francisco and they had survived all transits.  But when R&M moved them just 400miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles, they were obliterated.  We later learned that an entire section of our furniture load had not been secured properly in the truck before transit. Thankfully we paid for insurance, which we hope will cover some of the losses (after the deductible of course) - but some of these pieces we bought 2 decades ago and have sentimental value that you can't put a price on. And even if you could, we are still going to have to pay for removal and disposal of these broken pieces, not to mention waiting for 3-4 months for the replacement pieces to come back in stock, that is, IF they are even sold anymore. In the meantime, we have a hazardous graveyard of broken furniture full of splintered wood and cracked mirrors that has been taking up space for weeks as we await the insurance inspection, which is dangerous for our toddler. All said, R&M charged us around $37,000 to trash our furniture over a 400 mile relocation. For that, you would hope to get a careful white glove service. Instead, what we got went beyond carelessness - to break some of those items would really take some determination. While we thought we had tipped the furniture removal team handsomely on the day, maybe it wasn't enough and someone took it out on the furniture? A pretty awful experience all-in. I would never recommend using Robb and Messer - not unless you want your wallet Robb-ed and furniture Mess-ed up. read more

Beware of using this company. Even though they were recommended to us and the company was Diamond Certified, we were extremely dissatisfied with the entire move in and out process. WE hired them to over us from Santa Rosa, CA to Oceanside CA. The company's moving/packing estimates were higher than we expected, and with their additional packing charges, they still came in way over their estimate. The packing and move-out days were a complete disaster. They packed everything and anything into boxes, and most of the boxes were unlabeled. They used so much wrapping paper, that in many boxes, half of the contents were crumpled up paper. We even received a box packed with their trash from lunch, which they charged us for the packing and the box. They broke 4 lamps, two of them were antiques. We also shipped many large planters and a large Chinese vase that all arrived broken. We had many pieces of yard art that were shipped, and even with many of the pieces being packed, many pieces arrived bent, broken, or damaged. The packing and move-out crew were totally unorganized, very chaotic, and were even rude to us as they tore through our house. The crew that moved us into our new home were better, and even though they got all our things re-assembled and placed in the house, the damages were fairly extensive and it was impossible to tell who broke what. I would say that I would never wish on anyone a packing/moving experience like the one we had with Robb & Messer Moving and Storage. We have reached out to the company, but have not had any communication that would alleviate our disaffection with their services. 0 Stars are the appropriate rating. I'm not sure what crew was used for our move (I think north bay crew), considering we moved from San Anselmo to San Rafael so it's about an even drive time for either crew. Either way, they did a great job with our move so here goes... These guys rock. Got a recommendation from a friend who used them a couple times and Yelp reviews speak for themselves. From the walk through, to moving day, to tips on moving, to accuracy of quote, to overall value, R & M delivered for me and my family on moving day. We were in the process of buying our first home so trying to nail down a moving date was tough to begin with. Dave offered up a few different days and times, suggested we do early in the day since it was a short distance move and then also mentioned, if we need to reschedule just give him about a week heads up if possible. Lucky for us our move date didn't need to change, so Dave swung by our house for a walk-through. He gave us tons of tips on how we can make this move efficient and affordable...for example: - Start boxing up as much as you can, kitchens take the longest so if you feel comfortable - Label boxes on both sides and the room you want them to go to (i.e. Kitchen - glassware) - Un-assemble the Crib - Create a "parts" box for all the things that need to get un-assembled and wrap those parts in packing paper, tape and label it. - Roll rugs up if you can - Take down all photos, paintings - Leave clothes in dressers - Anything on hangers goes in wadrobe boxes so those just can stay right where they are. Asked about tipping too, because for as long as I can remember I never know how much to tip the actually movers - about $20 per guy is right, a little lower or higher depending on size and time spent. Packing up a 5 bedroom house for example, go higher. For us we were packing up our 2 bedroom town home. Local moves are priced generally on size and time, so if you can reduce time the guys have to spend just packing stuff up or trips back and forth to the Anyway, the guys (evan, Sean or John, and Solomon) arrived around 730am, they were polite and personable and these guys moved fast. Our stuff arrived safe and sound and couldn't be happier with the service. Highly recommend for local and state moves, and I believe they handle long-distance out of state as well. Also, they have storage if you need to use it temporarily. Didn't need to use it since we are actually in desperate need of furniture, but good to know. read more

TL; DR: 5 stars for 5 star movers! They kept to their estimate, didn't overcharge us at all, and were communicative throughout. We just completed an interstate move from IL to CA with Robb & Messer and recommend them highly! Moving with young kids is no small task and we knew we wanted to make sure our move went as smoothly as possible. I did a ton of research, got multiple quotes - the local IL ones, the big van lines, and came across Robb & Messer on Yelp. Could all the 5 star reviews be true? Answer: Yes! The process started with Dave responding really quickly and setting up a video call to survey our home. He then sent over a price estimate that was binding based on what we'd indicated we would be moving. When we confirmed we'd be engaging their services, Dave sent over a list of their team members and who we could contact. There was initially a 3-day pickup window but we were informed about a week in advance of when our exact move date was. Honestly as far as movers go, I'm impressed - they were responsive throughout, kept us updated, the movers arrived on time in the morning, and our goods arrived on the 1st day of our delivery window. Win! The final test was: am I going to end up with a final bill way higher than what was estimated? I'd previously had a bad experience with other movers who ended up billing us almost double what they had quoted, so I was extremely wary. But I can happily report that what Robb & Messer quoted was indeed what they billed - including saving abit on packing, since packing was pro rated based on what the movers actually packed. My feelings about this are mixed. At the heart of this grumpy review is my frustration over losing a statue and my AirPods. Despite my low review, the head mover, Pete, was wonderful! He really cared about every detail, and was a clever problem solver. He even surprised me at my new home by having the soap from my old house ready before he, and his team, unpacked anything else. Great guy! Bonus: he had a great personality, and a sense of humor! The reason for the two stars is what the packers lost; we paid quite a bit up front and tipped well, yet, this still happened. This review will focus on the two most important things lost. I didn't really care that some of the packers where we moved from were faded, and wrapped things...strangely, but it was disappointing what they messed up. I mean, if you're messed up enough to wrap a fork in five layers of tissue, surely you won't destroy/lose anything important...right...right? NOPE. I was so bummed that they lost/threw away a statue from my grandmother. It was displayed prominently in my living room, yet it just disappeared when they packed things. Gramma has passed, and had gotten this from our family's country of origin. It was a hand painted, carved, lovely piece of art. One of a kind, and now lost forever. A part of me hopes they just stole it, so someone will appreciate it. I'm also somewhat annoyed how my AirPods, charging on the kitchen counter, just disappeared. Moving can be a hair-raising event because there is so much to consider and how much everything costs can be too much. So when it comes to spending money for me the best anecdote has been referrals. Yes, I did my due diligence in looking at Yelp and other reviews but referrals provided me with the security and confidence that I need to finally choose a company to work with and to spend my money. I had moved before but was unable to locate the company that provided the services because they were great. So once I begin looking for a company I was truly disappointed because there were a lot of poor reviews on several of the moving companies out there. Finally, I narrowed things down between two companies with Robb Messr Moving being one of them. The other company was unable to come out personally and perform a walk thru and had me perform a lot of upfront work for them just to provide me with a quote so I choose Robb Messr Moving. Robb Messr Moving was not located close to me either but it was their extra effort that caused me to go with them. In addition, I was able to see how they would behave like a moving company by coming out, reviewing the inventory and providing me with a quote. I was leery, however, because while they had great reviews the company that they worked with did not. After a lengthy discussion with Dave at Robb Messr Moving, it was a done deal; I decided to take my chances. As it was quickly approaching my time to move God blessed me by providing Robb Messr Moving with a better moving partnership. The company, North American/Allied Van Lines was great. Now what made it an awesome experience was the driver Manny. Manny that works for North American/Allied Van Lines is professional, caring and excellent at what he does. He is available and you can call him on the road and if he is not available you will definitely get a call back usually within a few hours. He kept me posted on his travels which were convenient for me because it helped me to estimate when he would arrive. Having him accessible by phone was a plus for me. Manny takes his job seriously and he delivered my things across the country within 10 days I was really impressed. He traveled through a lot of heavy rains, sleet, and snow but he made it through. What was more impressive was the amount of time-at both locations-that it took for them to load and unload my things. And did I say that NOTHING was broken? I had a lot of things from glass tables, copiers, glass table tops, lamps, mirrors, statues, etc. Yes, I was shocked too. I am 80% done with unpacking and still shocked that nothing was broken or damaged. Once I finish totally unpacking if a few dishes, lamp covers or something minor is broken or damaged I will not be mad because I am SO happy. By what I see so far my things are just as I packed them and it was delivered in a timely fashion; what more can I ask for and the pricing was reasonable. I highly recommend this company and the movers that they use but make sure that Manny is the driver. NOTE: Robb Messr Moving, and North American/Allied Van Lines make sure that you treat Manny right because he IS the face of your company and represents it well. read more

My husband and I moved from San Rafael to the foothills two hours away. Dave came out and gave us an estimate. He was professional and nice. There is a 10% discount if you pay cash that we appreciated. The day of the move went very smoothly and the three movers were nice and fast. I had a problem with a ladder not making it to our new home and Dave said he would send a new ladder just like the one we had. We were amazed!! It wasn't found on their truck when they went back to their business, so it's a mystery as to what happened to our ladder. Do not use this company. They destroyed one very nice chair ($180) and then took a piece that they claimed would be fixed - never heard from them again. They took apart my bicycle and completely destroyed the brakes so that I no longer have working front brakes. It's a 3 week wait to get new parts in Seattle so I'm left without a bike for now. They obviously take all of the payment before delivering so that there's no way to argue these things. They even have the nerve to have someone call as a survey after and still did absolutely nothing about it. Look for any other company. These guys are unprofessional and unreliable. read more

Robb & Messer packed my house and moved it to their storage facility. This went well - polite, careful crew. The move from the storage facility in Petaluma to my new home was a different matter. The foreman was rude and condescending and just seemed like he had a bone to pick. Items were not put back together correctly or not put back together at all. The walls were nicked and some furniture was gouged and scratched. Moving isn't easy, things happen to your stuff but I felt I paid "top dollar" for my move and I didn't receive that quality when they moved me into my new home. Best movers ever. I recently moved from SF to Oregon and had to basically plan and coordinate the entire move while out of town on travel. Half of the household belongings were spread across two storage warehouses. In the process, I tried to get quotes from 5-6 of the prominently advertised / promoted companies and mostly experienced call center type service. Half of them contacted either never called back or insisted that I walk them through each crate across the warehouses - on their schedule. Dave was exceptional. He took the time to understood my move requirements, worked directly with the warehouse storage folks to build an estimate, and provided extremely competitive price. He provided a great team and full door to door move service including unboxing and setting up most of the major furnishings and removing all the boxes in the end. I came across these guys because I downloaded an app to help me with my move. I got dozens of bids as a result, and Dave stood out against the rest because he was faster, quicker, more responsive and more punctual. He was also the only moving company who offered to come by my apartment and actually look at everything to make a more accurate estimate on the budget. After that everything went like clockwork - the movers arrived early, were careful, respectful and lovely, and so gentle with my things. My move was small and simple - I actually moved one block over from where I used to live - so I was sloppy with my packing. I told them "everything is fragile". When the time came to unpack, not a thing was broken. This is more a testament to their care than it is to my wrapping abilities. Also, they charged me exactly what they said they would.
