Fun, festive atmosphere. Happy staff. Great service. The food was good overall. The flautas are huge, more like a deep fried burrito. It was too greasy for me. The abondigas soup is very good. Solid Mexican food option in Mammoth. My family and I came for dinner on a Saturday night and there was about a 20 minute wait. There are 2 floors to the restaurant but the upstairs is more lively since it has a bar. Note - I didn't see an elevator so keep this in mind if you need accommodations. The menu offers all the classics you could want and the portions are huge. Seriously consider sharing entrees. I don't think anyone at our table finished their food. Another plus - they sell margarita pitchers! Is it the best margarita you'll ever have? No, but it's a margarita. Service was quick and our food didn't take long, which I appreciated because I had a sleepy baby with me. I really enjoyed the beef taquito plate. I had the duck quesadilla and the chicken enchilada lunch special, and a juanita salad. I am from Chula Vista, CA (near the U.S./Mexican border) and so I'm used to authentically-tasting Mexican cuisine. This place nailed it for me! Very laid-back atmosphere and the service was very hands-off and did not feel pushy or rushed in any way. Very classy place! Roberto's was JUST ok. We'd heard people raving about it so we were super excited but the food was very underwhelming. The wait was pretty long, but the staff and service were great. The beer was good and cold. We got a mexican pizza and a combo plate with a tamale and an enchilada. Both plates were HUGE, and each looked like a sloppy pile of greasy cheese, rice, beans, and sauce. The mexican pizza was listed as an appetizer, but it was HUGE, so while we planned to split one appetizer and one main plate, the two of us couldn't finish either plate. We left behind about half the mexican pizza and a lot of rice/beans on the combo plate, and felt pretty guilty about that. Both plates looked very unappetizing and the taste/flavors were just ok. The inside was busy and warm, and felt cozy. Very much an "ok" experience overall - we probably won't be back. read more

As I feared, another terrible Mexican place recommended by howlies conflating portion sizes with quality. There were warning signs all over the menu; black olives, shredded lettuce, every dish sour cream. Everything drowned in canned sauce, terrible runny guacamole, and a salty aftertaste on everything. Really tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but truly terrible. If you came in from Washington I could see how you might enjoy this but unfortunately Californians, its a trap that you know all too well. read more

Came here with the BF last Friday. Waited maybe 15 minutes and we were seated in a booth even though we were just a group of two which was nice. BF got the spicy mango margarita (22 oz.) and I got the peligroso spicy margarita (12 oz.). While the mango margarita was delicious and tasted like it had real mango in it, it was not spicy at all. My "dangerously spicy" margarita was not spicy at all either - the only dangerous thing about it was how much alcohol was in it since it was so strong I could barely drink it. I know, a good problem to have, but we actually like legitimately spicy margaritas so this was a little disappointing. Chips and salsa were great. The salsa with the chips were actually spicy which we appreciated. BF ordered the carnitas plate. Carnitas looked a little dry but tasted good. I got the two item combo plate with a chicken enchilada and crispy chicken taco with rice and beans. Flavors were good. We were both incredibly full and could barely finish our plates. Portions are huge! Everything came out at a decent rate considering how busy it was on a Friday evening (we got seated around 6:30/7 p.m.). Servers were nice and they refilled our chips and salsa once and even offered to refill it a second time. Would go again to give Roberto's another try and ask for an actually spicy margarita. read more

Food: LARGE quantities. They are very generous with it. Decent taste. Their jabenero spicy sauce was a mix of multiple sauces. We could tell. Kids menu portions are as big as adults. Order wisely if you care about the landfills. There is no conversation that this too much for the kids or give an idea of the quantity. In that area they could improve. That's too much wastage of food. It's decently priced. Service. Out of three times we went, the lady upstairs was super rude all three times. Last night she was the nicest in between her moods. She also took my friend's plate before he finished without asking. He was still chewing with fork In hand. So I would say just pray before you go and hold your plate. Ambience is good. When we got the bill it does say there might be a surcharge when using a credit card! but we used a debit card pretty sure it's not ok do that. Server also only checked on us once when we were done. Overall good experience at Roberto's Cafe. Huge portions, fair prices, and a great place to grab a bite to eat. Ambiance is rustic and fits the mammoth area well. The downstairs is the restaurant but their is also a second story that has the bar that opens at 3pm. I went to watch the Super Bowl that they hosted up stairs with a bunch of TVs available to watch the game. The service was great, even with the football game on, the staff was on point and would come around periodically to take drink orders and take away finished plates. Never felt like I was needing for anything. Happy hour is also a great deal and include both drink and food specials. I ordered the hot wings and enjoyed them. For my entree, I ordered the grande burrito which is absolutely massive! Could easily have fed two people. Overall the food was pretty good, I wouldn't say it was the best Mexican food I've had but it was perfect after a half day of boarding at mammoth. TL;DR: RESTAURANT OVERCHARGED US BY MORE THAN $500+ AND IT WASN'T AN ACCIDENTAL ZERO. Service was also not great. We visited Roberto's a few weeks ago as I noticed the reviews were pretty good. I was also craving nachos that day and they have happy hour woot woot!! The restaurant was pretty busy the day of at 2pm but they had a couple tables available. First of all, I noticed that the restaurant was extremely crowded at 100% capacity. They have plexiglass but I think most places have relaxed restrictions. Their menus are still QR codes though so we didn't have to touch anything. The tables and bar seats, however, were really dirty so I am not sure how well they clean the tables. They serve chips and salsa at the start which was great because we were starving. We were ready to order within a minute of sitting down but the servers just never looked at as and we tried waving them down, and when we finally got someone, the server was just not as ...friendly... with us as to other people. The service afterwards was pretty normal. The food came relatively slowly but the free chips and salsa helped. In terms of taste, the food was pretty okay--the margaritas were nice and refreshing and my favorite was probably the potato skins. The nachos, however, were kinda oily partly due to the cheese they use and the fish tacos were dry. I think someone mentioned this before, but you can't expect mammoth food to be like the food from larger cities and I get that. The reason I am giving this restaurant 2 stars though is because they overcharged us by $500+ dollars and it wasn't as if they added an extra zero or anything--it was a completely different number with digits that weren't even the ones included in our total. I would have assumed it was an accident but I just didn't see big enough parties there when we were eating to actually have ordered over $500. Just be extra careful when you review your credit card bill or even better, visit another restaurant. It's just a little bit fishy and not because of the fish tacos they have on their happy hour menu. read more

The service was great! They greeted us right away, and we chose to sit outdoors to see the beautiful scenery. Unfortunately, we had to pay for the food that we couldn't eat due to its salty flavor. We chose the chicken and beef enchiladas, the pork tamale (with rice and beans), and the albóndiga soup. The albóndiga soup was very oily, and it was hard to enjoy. Also, the condiments in the food were too much, and if you are used to eating traditional Mexican food, this will not be the place to expect the delicious flavor of it. We were intrigued by what they promote in their website "Mammoth's favorite Mexican restaurant since 1985," but it is sadly not what we expected. When I told the lady who seemed like the manager in white pants with black shirt, about how the food wasn't good, she didn't show any empathy. She just brought the check, and took the food we didn't eat. Overall, I don't recommend this place for traditional, Mexican food. read more

We go chimichanga burrito, carne asada burrito, chicken enchiladas combo meal, and the chicken salad. Chimichanga was everyone's favorite. Huge portions but very salty food. My husband did not like the sauce of the carne asada. The chicken enchilada was big, but too much of the pre-seasoned shredded chicken stuffed inside. Rice and beans were delicious. We all came home with left overs. They warned us they were short staffed, so there was primarily only seating upstairs and we waited about 15 minutes. Hostess was very pleasant. Food is okay I only go here because it's a family tradition but nothing special by any means. Very good food, and the portion is huge! The duck burrito is good, but can be a little dry. The chile relleno is good. And I do also enjoy the complimentary chips and salsa! Good value for the price. This place is always packed and for a good reason! I recommend avoiding the lunch or dinner rush. Take out as a good option too. I got a lobster burrito with the guacamole on the side so I could dip it with the house chips. I can't handle spicy food, so if you try the salsa, let me know if you were also in tears!! Walked in and was kindly greeted at sat down immediately. Our server was beyond amazing and I wish I would've gotten her name. She was working on November 16th @ 7:00pm. She truly cared how we like our food and drinks and made sure we were absolutely happy with everything. Our food was so yummy and the portions were huge. We all ended up taking food home for later. I don't think that Mammoth Lakes will be a place I visit often (nothing wrong with it, but I'm not a skier and it's a heck of a drive from my home) but Roberto's will be a place that I visit every time I return here. No matter what you order, be sure to order the whole pinto beans as your side dish. It's mentioned on the menu as an option, but the serving staff will likely assume refried beans when you order beans. Make sure to mention whole beans. They are to die for. I left Roberto's in discomfort because I couldn't stop myself from eating. The portion size is huge and well, beans. Did I mention whole beans? I love Chile Rellenos and I ordered one here. It was great. So was the other thing I got on my combo plate that I can't remember what it was even with a picture. Did I mention whole beans? The smokiness, the texture, the flavor. First and foremost any activity out here gets you hungry! I'm first generation and born and raised in LA area. I am used to good Mexican food. I have to start with the service is amazing and fast! We sat at the upstairs area. Beautiful view of mountains. Our waitress was so attentive, brought us chips twice and their salsa doesn't look appealing, but it has a kick to it, that made it tasty. Of course my youngest couldn't wait to eat, all that nagging was not going to ruin my day in those beautiful trails, so I placed his order and within 8 minutes he was served, and quiet. I ordered Chile relleno with shrimp. I really thought the shrimp would be stuffed inside the relleno, but the shrimp was at the bottom of the relleno. Which was great because my plate was full of shrimps, and it was delicious. Also I'm giving them 5 starts because the beans are NOT CAN BEANS .... and the rice was a little over cooked but it was tasty. I dislike can beans and a real Mexican restaurant shouldn't serve can beans. Thank you Roberto's for not serving can beans! I loved my dish! And my boyz did, too. read more

While on vacation in Mammoth, the group I was with stopped in at Robertos Cafe. It's a stand alone building with a decent amount of parking. We had a larger group and the gentleman working the front desk was more then accommodating - giving me updates on getting enough tables together thay would fit our needs during a busy dinner service. I have to admit, seeing the pictures posted I wasn't entirely sold Roberto's would have good food. I ordered the El Jefe burrito with Shredded beef. The burrito comes with potatoes, beans, cheese and I added rice. What's interesting is they put the same ingredients on top of the burrito! When I took a bite I was very impressed with the flavor. Everything was spot on and every bite had a mixture of all the ingredients. I have added this as a "must go to" when I'm in town! read more
