Where's the BEEF! Runny sauce, and full of onions!

It breaks my heart to do this review, especially since I've been visiting Roberto's since I was in high school back in the 90s. This is back when they used to give you a real sub with real steak meat as opposed to that steak umm scraps! Nonetheless, I've moved to a different state, and now my son is a fan although he knows nothing about the real deal! After our hometown visit, we love to take some sandwiches back with us. However, the last few times we have come for a cheesesteak they 've gotten worse...WEAK! There is no meat in the sandwich, and the bread seems too dark and hard. They've replaced the Steak Umm meat with primarily onions now! I always ask for light onions because of it, and still the thing is loaded down! I saw the man putting a pile of onions on someone else's sandwich too! The sauce seems like they've added water to it, leaving no substance! Not to mention, there seems to be too many people behind the counter, and the staff seems to change! I don't recognize any of the staff who would recognize me anymore. I also waited way too long! I'm not sure what kind of restaurant their trying to turn this into! I ended up throwing my sandwich away this time! I called the store, and someone said there was no manager, but he would deliver the message. Please whatever you decided to do, change it back! It's sad to see the quality change. I think I've tried to support, because it's a part of my childhood. I've spent lots of money here through the years, and now I feel like I'm being ripped off! A sub full of onions! Check it out yourselves. The picture is after I cut it in half and took one bite! Unbelievable!

Just got done eating a meatless cheesesteak. More lettuce than anything. Very disappointed considering I live blocks away and have been a loyal 10 yr plus customer. New workers so maybe new owners but the old guys knew customers names and were very personable and the food was great. I guess nothing good last forever. Would have gave a one star but the two stars is holding out hope the older guys are just on vacation and due back soon

This has always been a go to spot. The main chefs do a great job with the pizza, specifically the buffalo chicken pizza! Mostly good things to say about the food. The downside is the customer service. This location literally got 3 straight call In orders either completely wrong, or forgot to start cooking it until we showed up. The lady at the register doesn't have a great attitude, and wears her mask under her face which defeats the purpose. Also, the most recent visit an employee simply wasn't wearing a mask at all. He was slicing a customers pizza while yelling across the room (with no mask on overtop the pizza). In the midst of a public health crisis, watching them hand that pizza to the customer really turned me away from wanting to continue eating here. Hopefully they can regroup and fix some of the simple things because the chefs do a good job!

    Cheese pizza with pepperoni added

So this is a tough review to write. You see we came in for lunch and ordered a large pizza. 20-30 minutes later the pizza arrives and it is huge... I mean falling off the pan huge. So we proceed to eat it. My wife loves it... I find myself reaching for salt, parmesan, garlic, etc to bring it alive. While it gets fractionally better, I wonder why just coming out of the oven it doesn't taste better. Well with a pizza that size, we cannot finish it. I proceed to get a box and am approached by one of those in charge asking how we liked the pizza. I tell him it was good and he proceeds to tell me that about 15-20 minutes after we were sitting he realized that our order was never put in. So he proceeds to let us know that he ended up grabbing one of the cheese pizzas that was already cooked for those buying slices and put pepperoni on it and put it back in the oven. He didn't want us to think that we would always get a pizza that size. So this explanation may answer why it didn't seem quite right. The lunch slice pizza's are larger than a 'large' so that was a positive (but apparently not normal). But we ended up with a pizza that had been sitting out and was reheated without having the pepperoni's originally cooked in and simply added later. Hopefully if we ever get back I can get a better sense of what a real pizza is like from Roberto's. Nevertheless, you get a photo out of this as there was no photo's of their pizza posted.

Love the rolls. Generous amounts of meat on the sandwiches. Pizza is good too. Definitely recommended.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!…read more After 15 years, we returned to what was once a favorite--only to experience one of the most disappointing meals we've had in decades. We arrived for an early dinner. The restaurant was nearly empty, yet the service was cold, dismissive, and unwelcoming from the outset. Our server seemed bothered by our presence, setting a poor tone that never improved. The appetizers--steamed clams and stuffed portobello mushrooms--were a clear indication of what was to come. The clams were completely devoid of flavor, and the mushrooms were nothing more than a soggy, unrecognizable mass. For entrées, we ordered the Lobster Ravioli and Veal ala Sammy with shrimp in a cream sauce. The veal was poorly executed, bland, sloppily plated, and came with exactly two small shrimp--an afterthought at best. The Lobster Ravioli, however, was truly inexcusable. It was not just bad--it was inedible. We took one taste and sent it back. At that point, despite a full dining room (inexplicably so), we asked for the check. What followed was beyond unacceptable: we were told the owner/cook refused to remove the ravioli from the bill. When I asked to speak with him, I was abruptly cut off and told it was "policy." In all my years of dining--across countless cities--this is the first time I have ever been charged for a dish that was sent back after a single taste because it was inedible. That is not policy--that is bad business. Against our better judgment, we gave them one last opportunity and ordered lasagna to go. What we received was a sloppy, unidentifiable mess thrown into a styrofoam container. We left it on the table without hesitation. Later, speaking with locals, the decline made sense--we were told the owner has been trying to sell the business, and that it is understaffed, poorly managed, and clearly struggling. But none of that excuses what we experienced. If anything, it confirms it. If you cannot properly execute your menu, then reduce it. Focus on something--anything--you can do well. What we encountered was a kitchen and operation completely out of its depth. Bottom line: careless, flavorless, poorly run, and not worth a single dollar. Go if you want--but if you do, don't say you weren't warned.

We finally decided to give it a try and were very impressed. While the restaurant is the corner of a strip mall, once you enter through the doors you are welcomed to a nicely decorated and welcoming Tuscan interior.  Definitely not what we were expecting from the outside. The host and servers were very friendly throughout our visit and made us feel like regulars even if it was our first visit.  The food was very good and reasonably priced! The bread basket contained warm rolls and started the meal. We tried the caprese salad, which was flavorful and good portioned. My wife tried the gnocchi solentina and was pleased. The gnocchi was light and not overly dense as some places, tossed with red sauce, fresh basil, mozzarella and italian sausage. I ordered the Pollo Princepessa special, which was a lightly breaded chicken cutlet with cheese, roasted red peppers, and a shrimp skewer over penne in a garlic white wine sauce. It was delicious.  The restaurant is a BYOB and is happy to accommodate diners with wine glasses and bottle opening. Overall we are looking forward to returning as the rest of the menu items sound delicious.

The Strawberry walnut chicken salad is made fresh with enough strawberries, walnuts, and mozzarella cheese for a dine-at-home experience. Generally, it is a fast, friendly takeout experience. My only disappointment is that our take-out orders usually do not include their signature homemade bread. My husband usually indulges in their extensive menu selection, but I stick with the salad. The Italian BYOB restaurant on Patton and Linglestown Roads is a local gem, and I plan to dine there soon.
