Went there for dinner with a couple of friends. I had never been before so I looked around at what everyone was having. I noticed a table of several people and a couple of them had the Seared Ahi. Looked perfectly seared and still red. Perfect to me. I ordered that and unfortunately it came to my table WAAYYYYY over cooked. Cooked on the outside and light pink on the inside. Not what Seared Ahi looks like. I mentioned this to the young male waiter and he instantly took offense. He said and I quote "if I take it back and have it re-done it will come back to you the same." I said not if it is not over cooked it won't and I pointed to the two people at the other table. The waiter just paused and said nothing. I decided to pass on taking it back because what's the point if the waiter says that even if I ask for it to NOT BE OVER COOKED it will come back the same. Lose, Lose. And the waiter never came back to our table even though 2 other people sitting with me had a good dinner with no problems. He sent a different lady to give us our check and another lady to pick up the CC to pay and bring it back. That is what I meant by the waiter taking offence. Not a very mature person. Overall the food was just OK. Nothing to put your nose up about. read more

We dined here for both lunch and dinner on the same day it was THAT good! Perfect place to go before & after visiting Hearst Castle, especially if you want to sit outside given COVID spiking again. We sat in the flowering garden for lunch. I had the falafel bowl - perfectly crisp outside with herby moist inside accompanied by the BEST muhumarra and quinoa tabbouleh. My husband enjoyed his hefty chicken club too. For dinner, we sat in the covered patio, bit closer to other tables than the garden but good air flow. I had the Roghan Josh -north indian lamb curry that came with yogurt, cilantro-mint chutney and a delicious pineapple chutney in little cups. They were accommodating to sub a vegetable for the rice. My husband had the southern spiced chicken with jambalaya risotto, tiger prawns & asparagus. Everything beautifully plated & delicious & came quickly after ordering. Only wished we had room for their popular carrot cake that sounded intriguing with crystallized ginger, coconut, pineapple and cream cheese frosting. Service was great. I discovered this restaurant through the White Water Cambria Hotel recommendation and so glad O ordered not once but twice in a row for dinner. The Thai Green Curry was sooooo delicious! We also ordered the beef skewers, the garlic bread was BOMB and the salmon entree was so good too. Great portion sizes! The gal on the phone was so sweet and the delivery girl was quick, safe and friendly as well. Disappointed, but they try hard. The crispy egg rolls were very crispy, but they were bland and had a taste like the oil wasn't fresh. However the kimchi served with them was excellent. My partner had the salmon bisque, and that was delicious with big chunks of salmon. For entrees, I had the Ahi special. The fish was beautifully seared and very rare, but sadly it was doused in sauce. It sat on a nice pile of black rice and some veggies. How much better this dish would have been if the sauce had been lightly drizzled on the rice, and then the freshly seared ahi placed on top. My partner had the butternut squash enchiladas. The squash was mashed squash, I thought it would be nice chunks of squash mixed with the peppers, etc. The flavor was good, but def. could use improving. The prices are high for the quality in my opinion. However, the service is excellent and the outdoor space is very pretty. read more

Hidden gem up the coast that we will certainly return to over and over again. On our drive from Big Sur, we wanted to stop and support a local farm to table restaurant and lucked out with Robin's. Our server (Kyle) was knowledgeable about the menu and his wine knowledge was a kin to that of an early career sommelier. I had great expectations after reading the reviews for this restaurant especially since some of the high marks were given by good friends. Unfortunately I felt a bit let down. First, the good stuff. Both ambiance and service were excellent. The place is in an old historic house. We were seated in a cozy little alcove. Every staff member we came in contact with was very personable. And the menu looked fantastic. I love food of different ethnic groups, especially those with robust flavors such as Indian, Mediterranean, and South-East Asian cuisines. And this is where I was so disappointed. All the flavors were off. There was no balance of salt, sweet, and acid mostly because there was no salt, sweetness, or acid present. To start we had the Vietnamese spring rolls and the meze plate. The former had a nice wrapper but the filling just did not taste good. The dipping sauce described as "plum-ginger" was composed of some chopped herbs and veggies in a translucent, slimy liquid. The accompanying kimchi was composed of carrots and cucumbers, looked dingy, and lacked any trace of acid or spice. The meze consisted of tzatziki, carrot miso hummus, and baba ganoush. The first lacked salt and acid. Instead I tasted cumin in it. The hummus was more like a carrot puree. Hummus comes from the Arabic for garbanzo beans. I don't believe there were any in it. The baba ganoush was watery and flavorless. For my main I ordered the Korean short ribs. The meat itself was of good quality and nicely cooked. But again the flavor profile was off. No salt, not the usual sweetness of kalbi. I find the concept of the cuisine great. But it is just badly executed. If it weren't for the great service, this would be a 1.5 stars. read more

Came for the vegan options- came back the next day for the amazing service and tasty food! The hostess remembered us from the night before and was so kind and welcoming each time. The vegan items are clearly marked on the menu and DO NOT disappoint :) We shared the Mexican chili, strawberry balsamic salad and cauliflower curry entrée. The flavors were out of this world. At first I thought there wouldn't be enough food but we barely finished all three plates and even had a to-go box of the cauliflower. The dessert menu was so enticing we decided to come back in the next night just for dessert. It was excellent. I was here at the end of November and felt incredibly safe dining in at Robin's. They followed all the covid precautions and then some. Before you go into the restaurant you bring up the menu on your phone via QR code so it's all contactless. In terms of seating, Robin's has a really lovely outdoor patio that is partially covered and has heat lamps. It felt really cozy yet spaced out. As for food, we ordered the crab cakes, fried rice and duck, and I would order all of them again! The ingredients all tasted really fresh, and the service was also fantastic! Our waiter was very attentive and gave us all great recommendations. Specifically, the duck was my favorite dish we had and was juicy, full of flavor and perfectly cooked. Delightful little Garden restaurant setting. We chose an amazing little quaint table on the patio with Italian music and Spanish guitar just loud enough to have conversation. Beautifully chosen pieces along with a beautiful blooming tree and all sorts of perennials and annuals blooming fresh orchids and wonderful organic food. A delightful server named Audrey took care of us she was bubbly and cheerful very attentive and had knowledge of all the dishes we asked her of. Coming from the restaurant business having owned and worked in many restaurants I realize how Irreplaceable such a server can be. It is not my first time here but my first time in years and it seems to have maintained the consistency and quality that all successful restaurants have. We opted for the short rib tacos which came out with obviously handmade tortillas . We had the choice of a garden salad or french fries and chose the garden salad and the house dressing . Short rib tacos were tender and they came in a set of two animal both stuffed and good size. We also had the pesto Pasta which also had pine nuts it was cooked slightly al dente they added a touch of cream for us and it was very good although I would choose something else next time. We had an affogato for dessert which is espresso with a small scoop of ice cream in it and it was quite decadent and Light . This is wonderful place to take your mom for Mother's Day or simply just because you want to spend the day in the garden without the work! read more

We had a bad experience in this place. Culinary it is a disgrace. Mushroom soup tasted like some one made a decent soup, and then diluted it with water to double the quantity. Other dishes were on the same quality level as the soup. Not keen on eating at tourist traps at all. read more

Great salmon bisque and the salad was absolutely delicious (so pretty didn't want to eat it). The ambiance was probably the best part, sitting in the outdoor patio surrounded by plants and flowers in English garden style. We came here for our 15 year anniversary. We arrived at 5PM on a Wednesday and were seated immediately. Very cozy and romantic right by the fireplace. The staff was very warm and attentive. Made our anniversary extra special. And the food! So delicious! We had truffle fries, short ribs and veggie lasagne. Ribs were so tender and fell off the bone. Too frou frou for its own good. Ambiance was very nice. But for $36 I expect my food to be cooked. I got salmon that was not only raw in the middle but cold. I get the pan fried thing but this was raw and cold. Yuck. Even the waitress turned her nose when I sent it back to be cooked. It came with a few slivers and I mean 2 or 3 slivers of squash that was the veggie and some black rice. When they took the salmon back I did not get a nice piece but the same one (I had cut it so I knew it was the same) and they did not put more squash back on plate. My husband had the same thing. It was cooked. And tasted ok. We also got a salad. $100 for a salad and two salmon dinners. Not worth it. If you want fresh fish we had amazing fresh fish in Morro Bay and you get a view of the bay. Robin, I've always loved you. I'm always singing your praises to everybody who visits Cambria. I even drag my wife to dinner here even though she can't stand you. But.... I think I'm done eating here. I think it's off my rotation. My wife said "I only go for you". Too many issues with the food year after year and the service is always bad. We started off with the "meze plate" which is quinoa taboulleh, preserved lemon hummus, tzatziki, feta, olives, and whole wheat chips for $9. It sounds great on paper but the flavors just weren't there. For the amount of chips we got on the plate you think they would provide more stuff.... such tiny portions. The tzatiki was the best thing on the plate. The hummus was pretty bland, I didn't taste any lemon. the taboulleh was completely flavorless. Olives with a tiny sprinkle of feta was tasty. My entree was pretty good, it was the "spicy tofu peanut panang" which was dry fried atsu-age tofu, yellow curry, basil, toasted peanuts, rice, and a pickled cucumber salad. For $17 bucks it was a pretty small portion considering it's tofu. The dish tasted great, full of flavor but ZERO spiciness. Where the eff is the "spicy"? Nice peanut and coconut flavors in the curry. The cucumber salad was very tasty and refreshing but it was such a tiny amount. I ordered a side of their house made kimchi which I never got. I brought up to the waitress and she just blew it off like nothing happened, could care less. My wife's entree was pathetic. She has the Risotto special which sounded excellent on the menu. It was supposed to be cheesy. It tasted like grits. Mushy flavorless watery grits. I personally would of send this $15 abomination back but she didn't. We had a coupon for a free dessert so we ordered the vanilla custard bread pudding. Worst bread pudding I've ever had. It was microwaved but not long enough so it had warm and cold spots all over it. The consistency was like jello and was completely flavorless. I'm sorry Robin's. You used to be great, I always eat here when visiting Cambria but you bring too many disappointments. My wife's meal on our 2009 visit had a rock in it and nobody cared. Year before that my steak was so chewy it was inedible... nobody cared.... I think back and there's been a lot of mistakes made with the food. Sad!! The final nail in the coffin is my stomach is KILLING ME! read more

So Jamie W. and I went for a getaway this past 4th of July weekend to ...(drum roll please) ...Cambria. Pretty exotic, huh? Well, he had never been to Hearst Castle before, and my one memory of this town was that it seemed quaint enough to explore for a couple of days. I may have overshot that one, but we did listen to the Holy Gospel of Yelp and dined at what Yelpers have deemed the best in town...Robin's. It was his birthday, so a splurge seemed appropriate. The first thing that strikes you about Robin's is the bucolic curb appeal, which looks like an adobe-style cottage (see my photos). Actually, much of the town looks like a Sunset Magazine spread, and it is pretty inviting to random tourists like ourselves. Inside is a tiny bakery space and then you turn the left to see the hostess, who was dressed in some Minnie Pearl-meets-Mama Cass dress that would have looked appropriate on the Brady Bunch Variety Hour. It turns out her outfit matches the homespun decor - rustic furniture, floral prints on the walls, sunflowers in vases. There's a large covered patio where most of the dining area seemed to be. Jamie and I were relegated near the kitchen door where the waitstaff zoomed in and out. Considering the Petticoat Junction ambiance, the robust menu turned out to be a bit of a surprise - Asian fusion with some classic American bistro. We first went for a couple of safe bets for appetizers - the $12 Crab Cakes and the $10 Heirloom Tomato and Goat Cheese Salad (see my photos). Both were winners - the former came with a caper-chive remoulade, radicchio (which they call "trevisio") and mixed greens doused with a sherry vinaigrette; the latter was four good-sized slices, very flavorful, with arugula, frisee, red onions and pistachio nuts drizzled with golden balsamic vinaigrette. The entrees were very solid though not quite exceptional. Jamie had the $14 Robin's Chow, which was wok-flashed pasta mixed with vegetables, chicken pieces and a whole lot of soy and ginger (see my photo). It was tasty enough though the balance of flavors seemed slightly off to me. I went for the $25 Kobe Flank Steak (see my photo). I think they were experimenting with a variation of what's on the online menu because mine came with green beans (which were done to a nice snap-crunch) instead of asparagus and scalloped potatoes instead of the wasabi mashed potatoes. It's probably my predilection, but I was reminded how much I didn't like the cheesy consistency of scalloped potatoes when I tasted them. It brought back haunted memories of the super-gooey Betty Crocker kind my mom used to make as a rice substitute. The horror. The steak itself was good though a tad overwhelmed by the Korean teriyaki sauce if you ask me. The Kobe stands alone, don't y'know? We decided we should share a dessert and went for the $8 Tiramisu (see my photo). It was surprisingly light and pretty good, especially with the mound of chocolate shavings on top, but not a great one. The ladyfingers were barely there, and it made me wonder if they were serving us a Weight Watchers portion. What the hey? Regarding the service, our waitress was very nice and prompt, just a tad too new to speak to the menu with any fluency. I say if you want to splurge in Cambria, come here. It ain't bad, and they definitely deserve an A for effort. FOOD - 4 stars...a surprising foray into Asian fusion, not always successful but the attempts are worth trying in this hamlet of a town AMBIANCE - 4 stars...and that's Uncle Joe and he's movin' kinda slow at the junction...Petticoat Junction SERVICE - 4 stars...friendly waitress...oh yeah, she wasn't wearing the Minnie Pearl dress TOTAL - 4 stars...fine dining in Cambria ...who da thunk it? read more
