This place is so much fun! I love a diner and when it's 50's themed there is nothing better! First impression is always important. This place is clean! The booths are super comfortable and match the aesthetic perfectly! They have juke boxes on the table (just for show), but you still can make requests through main machine. The walls have time period movie posters and other fun decor. I loved the timeline along the border and I was amazed at some of the facts! The staff was super attentive and made sure we always had what we needed. The food was delicious diner food! I ordered the BBQ bacon cheeseburger with fries, my dad got the Ortega burger and fries, my mom got the pastrami and fries, and my son got the Dino nuggets and fries. We ended the meal with a couple of shakes. Everybody was thoroughly impressed with the amount of food we got! The food and shakes were very tasty! We will definitely be back again! This diner was conveniently located right around the corner from our campground, which made it an easy choice for us. The waitstaff checked in on us promptly and repeatedly without being overbearing. I ordered the barbecue sampler platter, and it was delicious. My 6-year-old ordered a cheeseburger and a Roy Rogers to drink. Surprisingly, he ate the entire thing, which is rare for him! There was plenty of street parking out front, I even managed to park our truck and toy hauler without any issues. The inside was tastefully decorated and had a nice, welcoming atmosphere. And if you are in the area, south of Pismo Beach, this would be a fun place for a group to come and drink their alcohol and snack, 4-star. Two old rail cars from the pre-1960s. One a dining car and the other was a lounge car/bar. Bathrooms are outside. Location is right off the beach and I think it is off Hwy One on Railroad Ave. Open 8am - 8pm every day. Parking along the street...easy. Menu: Great breakfasts with that California/Mexican touch offering Machacha, tri-tips with eggs, Huevos Rancheros, Chorizo and Eggs and breakfast burritos. $16 - 22. And regular American style egg dishes, including omelets and scrambles. Lunch & dinner is burgers, salads, sandwiches, BBQ, and wings and the Greek influence (owner must be a Greek) of spanikopita, moussaka, lamb and shrimp dishes (up to $30). I should have known I was in trouble when the meal arrived on an old train car, because this dinner was a full-blown derailment. I ordered the beef ribs with mashed potatoes and gravy, chili, and bread. The ribs had less flavor than the menu and were mostly fat and gristle. I spent more time excavating edible meat than actually eating it. The mashed potatoes were so chunky they could have qualified as landscaping material, and the gravy had the consistency of train-car axle grease. As for the chili, I'm about 99% sure it was straight out of a can of Dennison's. If you're going to serve canned chili, at least don't make it obvious. By the end of the meal, I felt like I'd paid for a first-class ticket and ended up riding in the baggage car. Save yourself the fare and steer clear of this train wreck. In response to Mario. Just came here 7/23/26. My family of 10 went around 10:30AM. They all ordered breakfast, but I saw "big Greek menu" I gave that a try. Ordered the lamb gyro and man it didn't disappoint. I'm from NorCal where we're flooded with Nick the Greek, but this place outshined them. The pita had a light crisp and soft, lamb was not dry and the tzaki sauce was nice and chunky not watered down. I've driven past this establishment a few times and made it a point to return, so I did. Arriving at noon on a Saturday was dicey but to my surprise it wasn't busy...yet, being seated was a snap and coffee was soon at my table along with two different menus one for food and the other for drinks. Once more I find myself at the coast and a desire of seafood came over me much like a wave on a sandy beach, with my bifocal sunglasses on (sigh) I navigated the menu and settled in on a crab melt with a side of fries and a cup of clam chowder. The first wave of food came in the form of the ever popular cup of chowder and I must say they didn't scrimp on the clams, with a few oyster crackers sprinkled on top I soon began my journey through the sea to the island of Yum. The voyage with filled with beautiful scenery as I was finishing my creamy cup-o-chowder the server delivered the crab melt that I was anticipating while enjoying every spoonful of chowder, with a side of ranch dressing and a squirt of ketchup I paddled through a few French fries before tackling the melt and as a lover of garlic the first bite was as if I found a treasure of flavor. The food was awful. I sent the chicken strips back because my daughter said the chicken tasted funny and it looked WEIRD. I had a Ceasar salad that was soggy with dressing ~like they have a huge pre-maid bin of it and don't care if people have soggy lettuce. Shrimp had too much breading and were small in size. Almost bay shrimp size. Also ordered clam chowder in bread bowl. Bowl was smaller than a typical bread bowl. They also butter the top. The clam chowder was average at best. The buttered top was tasty but caused indigestion for the next few hours. $40 for the above, 2 waters and a cup of soup. Finally visited the Rock & Roll Diner to satisfy my curiosity after living 25 years in the area. Fun ambiance. Wide array of menu choices...a bit all over the place (American, Mexican, Mediterranean...). Attentive service. Food is meh, but only tried their clam chowder and chicken enchiladas. Was honestly expecting the chowder to be better, given it was locally awarded in '24. I think they also serve beer, etc? Go and experience it at least once. I would probably stick to the standard diner fare next time, unless there are multiple positive reviews of something else. Edit: I went to their website and read the history page. There's a reason why the menu is a bit worldly. Past patrons continually to requested the owners Greek dishes. I guess I need to go back and try that side of the menu. The Zorba's Feast for 2 caught my eye, and the Happy Hour deals look enticing. Stay tuned. read more

First time coming here after driving past it for the past 16 years. It is a cute and fun little place with a lot of history behind those two real train cars. There are American bbq options, American classic, Mexican, and Greek food options (I'm told the owner is Greek). We both had burgers and the meat was flavored just right with the char and spices. I asked for the onions to be grilled and they did them perfectly on my burger. The waitress was personable (I didn't get her name) and we enjoyed the camaraderie we established with her. Ambiance/scenery: where it's located is cool. The theme is a bit dated but is alright to look at if you have add/adhd or kids that you dont want on the phone. However, Service / Servers could be A LOT better. My baby doesn't run around and isn't an ipad kid, she loves to draw and make noise, that's what 2yo do. So when my child accidentally knocked over the "kids water cup" that the server gave us, dont get angry and pissy about WATER being spilled. And stop shooting looks at us. She's still a baby. After the server rather quickly and demandingly took our orders we eventually got our food. I got a 1/2rack of BBQ Pork Ribs, salad, and French fries. My salad must have been under the heat lamp for a while because the salad was warm. Like hot warm, not "left out" warm either and on top of that i got my salad WITH my ribs? I took a few bites and just set it aside because i had ribs, which LOOKED juicy but ended up being dry but smothered in sauce to hide the dry. The french fries i got were also just cold warm. Not even warm warm like the salad. For my kid I got the "Kids Chicken Dinosaur Strips" which ended up just being chicken strips. Misleading Menu name. The Rock and Roll Diner is my first diner in over a year. Moving to California has put a squash on the diner scene. There are some, but no state will ever be as good as New Jersey. Anyway, I was excited to find a small diner up the Central Coast. Little did I know what I found. Outside, a large sign said: voted the best restaurant on the Central Coast. Neat! Rock and Roll Diner Atmosphere: If you are looking for the most authentic diner in California, it might be the Rock and Roll Diner. It's located in a vast train car on the side of the road. You won't find a more authentic diner than that. The inside has plenty of memorabilia with not an inch of wall uncovered. There are probably 20-30 booths in total and plenty of seating. I could see it getting crowded on weekends for breakfast and lunch. Rock and Roll Diner Food: The Rock and Roll Diner menu has everything you expect and wants in a diner. I stopped around lunchtime and was in the mood for pancakes. The Rock and Roll Diner lunch and dinner menu also has several options, and it was hard to stick to breakfast. That's what I came in for. Some of the Rock and Roll Diner menu items that stuck out to me were: Biscuits n' Gravy Combo: Two buttermilk biscuits topped with our homemade country sausage gravy, two eggs any style, and two bacon strips Seafood Omelet: Bay shrimp, krab, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, & jack cheese topped with fresh avocado Old West Cinnamon Rolls I decided on the large stack of pancakes plus an old West cinnamon roll (with frosting). I always think pancakes are risky because they will either be amazing or thin and gross. And in the 400 US diners I've been to, I've had many variations of both. These pancakes were good. They were not the biggest pancakes I've had, but they were enough to be filling. The cinnamon roll was super tasty and dense. It was more of a loaf than a roll, but otherwise good. I'm a huge fan of the cinnamon roll so if you stop by you have to get one, with the frosting! Service: My food was ready quickly, and the hostess was friendly. Honestly, what more do you need in a diner? Cost: $$$ My pancakes and cinnamon rolls were $19, which was more expensive than I anticipated, but the food was good, and I have no complaints. Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back to the Rock and Roll Diner? Yes, I enjoyed the food and the vibes, and it's a short stop away from Pismo Beach. In all, I am a big fan, and I hope to get back again soon, I just wish it wasn't so expensive.  The Rock and Roll lunch and dinner menu looks just as good so I would love to get back during that time. read more

My man flew me to Oceano for a camping adventure at the airport. There's a campground near the beach, where planes were parked. We walked less than a block away to this super cool 50's train/diner. We were pleasantly surprised at how good our meal was! We shared a Greek Appetizer - warm pita bread with two different dips, hummus and tzatziki sauce. They were both a little bland, but it was tasty nonetheless. I think I was starving at this point. My dish came with the Greek Salad. The veggies were surprisingly fresh at 4 or 5 pm, like it was just picked from the farm. I'm always wary about restaurants with extensive menus. I was relieved they didn't over do it with the dressing! The Gyro Pita was pretty good. However, the lamb was kinda rubbery. It was tasty since it was marinated with good stuff, but the meat wasn't fresh or tender. The veggies inside the Gyro was at least. On the other hand, the Greek Burger was outstanding! Now there's the juicy meat! I enjoyed the burger much more than the gyro. Service was quick and friendly, maybe because we were there at an odd time. Do NOT stop here to try to use the restroom & avoid the yelling waitress! We had been on a roadtrip along Hwy 1 and desperately needed to use the restroom on Saturday May 17 at about 3:30pm. We had stopped at multiple places that either didn't have a restroom at all available or was denied because you needed to purchase something. We frankly didn't want to spend $ to use the restroom. We saw a diner coming up with barely anything past it, so this was our final attempt before perhaps having to loop back around to find another place. Mind you, it's a Saturday and there is no parking and the streets are packed. I've spent about 20 min parking in different areas trying to find anywhere to let me use a restroom. We see the diner and we stop there. Only me and my mom went up to the area where it says wait to be seated and we waited for someone to come by. A man came by and we asked if we could simply use the restroom, we were desperate. I told him I would buy a soda if needed, he said it was fine I didn't need to and directed us to the restroom. We use the restroom and begin walking out of the front and down the ramp. All of a sudden I hear a women with a European accent YELLING at us!! She is screaming over and over "CAN I HELP YOU??!" Until we turn around. I tell her no we are fine, because we were already far past the door continuing to walk down the ramp. She continues screaming, but I honestly couldn't understand her bc of her accent so I said "huh??" And she just kept screaming unintelligible things until we got in the car and shut the doors. Clearly there was a lack of communication between the workers. It was truly the most bizarre thing I've experienced in a while. We were already finished up there, and clearly if you yell at me I will not be giving your business any money at all. I was ready to say some things to this rude woman, but my mom convinced me there's no point. I believe this woman is in the wrong line of work and I feel bad for anyone who has had to encounter her. It's a shame bc that first man was very nice and understanding. IMO, any worker who screams at a customer should be fired. If I did that at my job, wheweee! I would be fired on the spot! read more

We had been to the Rock & Roll Diner in the past. It is very unique and a fun place to check out since it's very different. It's inside an Amtrak train car. Fun to see but really difficult to have conversation with others if the place is full. My husband ordered cheese enchiladas and instead of the rice and beans, he had them top it with mashed potatoes. He said the cheese enchiladas weren't very good. He figured the enchlada sauce was a canned topping but he did eat them. I ordered the 3 sample BBQ plate. We smelled the BBQ as we walked in and it smelled so good. However, there wasn't much on the plate. Actually, there was NO meat at all on the rib bones -- none. It was smathered (not a word, I know) in BBQ sauce so you could lick the bone I guess. The 1/4 chicken (or chicken leg & thigh) was the smallest chicken piece I'd ever seen. The leg was tiny and the thigh part almost non-existent. The tri-tip was thin but good. The chili beans served with it was no different than a can of chili you might open at home. The mashed potatoes are real but no flavor. It was almost as if they were watered down. Service was good and servers were friendly. read more
