Had breakfast at this place yesterday morning . I've got to say the experience of eating inside a train was a pretty cool. Other than that it was horrible. I found 3 hairs. Hash browns and the French toast were flavorless. And I am not to sure if this man in the picture is the owner or just a regular employee, but man he just makes you feel so uncomfortable walking back and forth throughout the whole time we were there. Lots of locals having lunch in the off season is a good sign... Traditional American diner fare, a large Mexican menu and even larger Greek menu. Truly something for everyone. I was seated quickly and served cheerfully and attentively, so I'm not sure what others experienced I had a pulled pork sandwich with fries and iced tea. I drove past them a few days before and saw they had quinoa tacos for a special and recently stopped eating meat again so that was perfect! This is the quaint little railroad car that sits on the side of Hwy. 1 in Oceano and you can't help but want to eat here. It is decorated as a 50's diner and all the memorabilia with business cards stapled to the walls and ceiling. Ok now that I have been here so many times when we visit the area and it isn't my choice to come here I will write my review since I can do it with a full spectrum of meals. On my first visit it was breakfast and it was ok, really how hard is it to mess up breakfast except for the fact that their country potatoes are small cubed potatoes that are just deep fried potatoes, ah no. So the second time I ordered the regular hash browns and that was much better so the breakfast is mediocre to say the least. On my third trip it was a lunch trip and I ordered a patty melt and it was so greasy it was almost inedible but flavorful because of that fact. Fries were ok. Hubby said his burger was very good and it looked very tasty. Our forth trip was dinner (we were with folks who prefer this spot) I ordered the falafel since they have a full greek menu since the owners are greek and are proud of their greek food so I thought I'd give it a whirl. Not so good. Hard and tasteless. Actually they were burnt. Ok so this is the last trip and we went with my folks since our go to Mexican food place was closed and we were in a hurry to get back on the road. So I ordered the bowl of clam chowder, hubby got the seafood sampler, dad got the ruben sandwich and mom the chicken fajita salad. My chowder was good, hubby said it was the best he's tasted, I wasn't that impressed but the crackers were stale, hubby's fish and clam strips on his platter were almost burnt, and dad's sandwich was like my patty melt from before, greasy. Mom's salad was huge and she said it was really good. So it's a mixed bag of tricks here. Some good, some not so good. The fact that you're dining in a locomotive pretty cool if you ask me. Not only that but the inside is like you've stepped back in time, to a nostalgic diner set back in the 50's. If that doesn't catch your attention, how about their "Big Greek Menu." Not only do they have fresh Greek favorites, diner food, AND bbq! Talk about an all around selection for anyone's needs. From fresh vegetarian plates to the meat lovers choice. I personally ordered the falafel with a side Greek salad. The salad dressing was outstanding, you can tell lots of love and preparation goes into making all of their delicious dishes. After my decently sized salad came my falafel, wrapped to perfection, topped with fresh cucumber, tomatoes, and the mouth watering tzatziki sauce. Alongside my falafel came perfectly seasoned fries which were also dipped in the tzatziki sauce (highly recommend). Lastly, shared a nice slice of baklava, with a scoop creamy ice cream sprinkled with cinnamon. I can't emphasize enough how fresh all the food was, from the salad to the dessert. I was oddly optimistic about going to the Rock and Roll Diner this morning. I'd seen it years ago, and each time I am near it, I yearn to explore its domain. So I talked my honey into trying it out. Sadly, this rock and roll diner, a pair of former train cars, has derailed and has fallen into hard times. Walking in, I was charmed by the black and white checkered tile floor, and the red and white booth seating. Our wait person came down the aisle, a podcast in Spanish still blasting from her pocket, as she seated us and handed us a pair of menus. It took quite a while to get a mug of hot water for tea, but I was unabashed. Still hopeful, I ordered a french toast meal. There wa a cute mini juke box perched on the table. But competing for attention were seven other table tents. Hmm. Not a lot of ambience there. I could have sent my eggs back; they were supposed to me medium, but they were runny and cold. The trick here, was that the plates the food was served on were not preheated. They were stone cold, matching the dead food served up thereon. Other than being way underdone, the eggs were okay. The bacon and sausage met my standards, but the rest of the plate was so cold by the time I got to it, that I couldn't choke it down. I got a to-go box for the french toast. The slabs of french toast were hard to enjoy, but I hoped that heating them up would make them more edible. The dollop of butter (?) that came with them was enough for maybe one piece of toast, but I know I can be unreasonable in my expectations. I thought about using the juke box in an effort to salvage the morning's ambience. But it was barely audible and I was afraid it wouldn't ever go up in volume. My spouse suggested that the wait staff had not been trained in the subtle art of serving customers. Perhaps they did not understand about hot plates and courtesy. I tend to think it's because the staff didn't really care if we had a good time or not. It was if they were already accepting defeat. It was sad, really. It could have been so much more. This could have just been an off-morning. But I suspect their habits have fallen by the wayside. read more
