When I first heard of the Bar I thought it was called the Rocket Grill. Thanks to my quick Yelp search I got the correct name for the bar. I came on a Thursday and must say, it is your typical local bar and grill. 2 pool tables, plenty of tv's, bartenders are really friendly, GREAT selection of food, and a small dance floor. I'm not sure if karaoke is every Thursday night, but it was happening that day. Many of the singers are very good. I am a fan of this place for several reasons, which I will list below. 1. it's very random, as you don't expect to find a bar like this in "old town" 2. it's very random, as the people inside the bar come in every shade, every stereotype, every shape and every size. to quote another reviewer who put it best, " Aging women with impossibly large hairdos, pre-pubescent clothing (both in style and sizing) and a crotch-radar on their buttocks. Black goths (as in, African Americans who happen to follow the gothic/metal lifestyle). Guys with Nascar hats. Old guys cruising for tender young female flesh." And it doesn't end there, it has something for everyone. 3. I myself, get up on stage everytime I go, and usually sing Journey, but somehow managed to sing twice in one night and sang BSB 'I want it that way', the crowd was pump and singing along. -You see what make the experience truly enjoyable is not only the people the crowd reaction to the song you choose.. 4. The food is good and cheap. 5. Sometimes, the waitresses get overwhelmed by the crowd, and it becomes increasingly hard to get a beer, but they do come and my buzz has never went away.. Giving it 3 stars-- for what it is! Yes, it's a dirty shit karaoke dive bar. Yes, I like to drink at a shit dive bar once in a blue moon. No pretentiousness, cheap drinks, and pretty friendly folks. Only been a few times, never have problems striking up conversations, and hearing the hoooorrrrrrrid singing makes it fun. Maybe once or twice a year. I've never found it to be a whole lot of fun. I would call this place a "dive" but it doesn't rank with all the great dive bars out there. Plus, it doesn't have enough class to be a dive bar--I guess I would call it--I don't know--a "nothing" bar. It was better off with its old country-western theme. I have been here too many times. And although once is enough, I've probably been here 100 times. The cops sit across the street waiting for the next fight to break out- which is actually kind of nice because I've been in several, and a lot of times they just break it up. I used to love coming here to see the "cast"- all of the regulars we had names for. I used to order double rum 'n cokes exclusively. I still come here on the way back from a National's game for a night cap and watch TV highlights while someone shreds Journey or Alanis Morissette. Had lunch at Rock It once- literally found plastic wrap in my salad on my first bite (lucky!). I think I got a hamburger instead and of course they charged me for the salad. Obviously I won't give them a second chance. To the staff that work there- I love you and miss you all. Some of the nicest people you will ever meet, considering the crowd this place draws. Pretty good for a dive bar, or for karaoke. The food, on the other hand, is not so great. My latest visit was for happy hour on a Tuesday. We got there around 6:30 and the place was pretty empty. Tuesdays are half price burgers so I ordered the Mushroom Swiss burger. The (medium) burger was cooked properly and was juicy, but without a whole lot of flavor. The fries were overcooked and dry. The portion sizes were large and at half price I can't really complain about not getting my money's worth, but the overall taste wasn't particularly good. Service was decent. There was only 1 waitress covering the whole floor and that definitely could have been an issue on a busier day, but there were few enough people when we were there that putting in our orders wasn't too difficult. Also, she remembered 6 different sandwich orders without having to write anything down. I think Happy Hour is from 4-7 (not sure about the 4, but it definitely ends at 7). On top of that, they have half off sandwiches on Mondays, half off burgers on Tuesdays, and $.50 wings on Thursdays. As mentioned before, the food isn't great, but if you need a delivery mechanism for your alcohol then it is serviceable. I haven't gone to Rock It for karaoke in almost 2 years, but they have it starting at 9:30. Another Old Town dive. The food is pretty bad, but it is better lit and definitely feels safer and more comfortable than O'Shaugnessy's across the street. The beer and cocktails are cheap and utterly uninspired, but decent. It also has a huge bar, so you can almost always find a seat no matter how crowded it is. The big draw here is the kareoke...seriously, for whateve reason, I've heard some of the most talented kareoke singers ever here. read more

Rock It is truly the Cheers of the downtrodden and the karaoke lovers. I do have to say, and I am not ashamed, that I was a regular here for many years, living the life and knowing everyone's name. Like so many others who have review Rock It, I love it yet completely hate it at the same time. Oh my gosh. I have friends who won't go anywhere but Rock It. I enjoy Tuesday nights at Rock It, not for any specials, just when some co workers and I go after work. On these nights, you can sing if you want to (which I normally do not, but I have rapped out the Fresh Prince of Bel Air in the not so distant past). It is also not difficult to get a table or service, and the mocking of people comes easy with all the tragic karaoke singers (my rendition of Fresh Prince being one of those). Also, oddly enough, there never particularly seems to be a line for the ladies room. Ladies, this is GREAT! Because you know when you've got to go, a line will just not do. Why do I hate it? Why wouldn't I? On weekends it gets so crowded you can barely move, or get a drink unless you have bartender connections (I somewhat do...bonus!). The obnoxious drunk skanky chicks are abundant, and so are the pervy awkward guys. Perfect matches are made nightly. It is incredibly smoky all the time, and dear God, how many nights a week can you really listen to people butcher classic songs? I never understand why I wait to get in the nights there is a line. But I do. I guess people like karaoke because they feel more comfortable with themselves... I would imagine the thought that you aren't the most foolish drunk in the room is comforting. Oh Rock It! This is one of my go-to places in Old Town and not to mention it's location is great. If you're a liquor fan I suggest ordering a Vodka & Red Bull here. They only pour half the can into the glass, unlike other bars, so you use one can per two drinks + it saves money. Karaoke is priceless and Rock It provides a great place for people watching. You will find customers wearing everything from suits to sweatpants to cowboy hats. We normally visit on Thursday's and try to get there by 830 p.m. to grab a seat; weekends I'd suggest 8 p.m. or earlier since they host bday parties and it really fills up fast! Last, but definitely not least, ask for Linda as your server! You will not be disappointed! She is so attentive and has memorized our drinks. read more

Only came to play pool and ended up singing karaoke which was so sad because the song I picked was way faster than I expected, I made such a fool of myself but had a blast! I don't think the kitchen was open at the time so I didn't get anything to eat. Service was good, I'm not a big drinker so when I got a rum pineapple with their rail rum, I had to return it because I couldn't drink it, and although I saw the bar tender roll her eyes when my server got to her I dudnt care. I know how frustrating it is when a customer returns a drink of good, I'm a server and I sometimes get in trouble for that. Definitely a cool hangout place! read more

How I heard of this place: We decided to spend the day in Alexandria, looking for a great brunch spot and we found one! Type of cuisine: "Daily food specials, great burgers and steaks, MD style crabcakes, steamed clams, hand cut fries and crunchy hand breaded onion rings." They run the with everything from soups and chili to salads (Asian Chicken, Cajun Shrimp, Blackened Salmon and Grilled Chicken Caesar, Chef, Garden, Tortilla Salad with Grilled Chicken or Spicy Ground Beef), from seafood appetizers, to deep-fried everything (Mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, fried pickles, wings and buffalo tenders), from flat-bread pizzas to potato skins, from quesadillas and crabcakes to spinach & artichoke dip, from South of the Border fajitas, tacos, burritos and chimichangas to Orange-Glazed Salmon, Rib-Eye Steak, Fried Oysters and Jerk Chicken. Not to mention their Burgers and Sandwiches, Chocolate Cake, Fruit Pie and Reese's Peanut Butter Pie, their menu also includes Daily Specials such as Nightly Karaoke (from 9:30 - 1:30), Happy Hour (from 3:00 - 7:00), Monday 1/2 priced sandwiches, Tuesday 1/2 priced burgers, Thursday 50-cent wings (minimum of 10) and weekend brunch (from 11:00 - 3:00). Ambiance: Walking by Rock It, my husband was excited by the sign. It took me a minute, having only seen the 1970s decor - or lack of - through the windows facing King Street. Being at the far end, away from the water, I was skeptical. Walking through the wooden door, with two, rectangular wooden cutouts, I was hesitant. Seeing the bland foyer with cream-colored walls, painted over and over again, like Tammy Faye LaValley Bakker Messner's make-up made me cringe. I was still iffy when Chris had made it all the way inside, and I was still lingering in the foyer doorway, wondering about the three bright-colored Smart Art posters of their specials in no particular order of relevance or organized layout, next to a framed piece of 1980s style artwork boasting a dozen full martini glasses (complete with olives) gradually getting smaller through the piece. This set over a brown wood laminate table holding stacks of local newspapers. I followed the rust-red tiled floor to the first room of booths against the windows and mismatched chairs by light wooden laminate tables, the smells of a pool hall lingering in the air. One pillar and a small wall with a hollow window hole look out from this indoor patio space onto the adjacent blue carpeted dining area. Hanging inside the windows are four stockings in red and white, steering your eyes into the Christmas light-ed bar, where a sole, female bartender meandered back and forth, serving three, elderly, male patrons. At least six flat-screen televisions allowed for sporting views throughout the establishment. Half-walls separated the bar from the restaurant floor, and the dining area from the two pool tables at the far back of the hall. Immediately inside and to the right, three vertical, lengthwise guitar paintings hung over the stage where one can only imagine the karaoke sounds that stir each evening. What I ordered: My husband was tempted by the lunch menu, but soon returned to the egg dishes he was craving before we left home this morning. Being a cold (45-degree) day, he wanted a bowl of Clam Chowder to start and was only slightly disappointed when the daily soup special did not include it. Instead, having been intrigued by Gary's Homemade Chili ($3.50 Cup / $7 Crock), a mostly beef with red kidney bean chili, topped with shredded cheddar cheese, and served alongside tortilla chips, we went for a small cup to share before our meals arrived. For breakfast, I selected the Rock It Scramble ($8): two eggs scrambled with bacon, onions, mushrooms and shredded cheddar, served with homefries and toast (rye). My husband took my recommendation and went with the S.O.C. ($8): a maple sausauge, onion and cheddar cheese omelette served with homefries and wheat toast, accompanied by two small packets of grape jelly. His usual: a side of bacon ($2.50), a cup of coffee ($2.08) and a glass of orange juice ($2.08) for Chris and we were all set for a big meal with which to start our day. What I loved: I loved that the first thing I noticed on the brunch menu, under Super Combos was Asghar's Big Breakfast Combo. Asghar. Awesome! My favorite part of the meal was, in fact, the small portion of chili we enjoyed on a whim. The bacon, while cheap, was crisped to perfection, full of salty, greasy goodness. Okay, I finally made it in here. I'm embarrassed to announce that this bar/grill is barely three blocks from my house. I have tons of friends who go here almost every weekend, but I've always been a little hesitant to check it out. You know how you usually don't visit the tourist attractions in your home town? The karaoke was definitely great. There was quite a variety in terms of genre of songs and talent of singers. Despite the fact that I didn't actually sign up to sing, I would've felt confident enough to make it onstage. The DJ also broke the monotony of singing every once in a while with a set of dance music, which shook things up a bit. There was a decent sized dance floor where you could shake it. Also, while there definitely were a few skeezy guys who hovered on the edge of the dance floor, thankfully they mostly just stood there staring! It's always much more pleasant when they follow the rule: look, but don't touch. Now, to the downsides. I don't know if I have ever been in such a smokey bar. It really stands out now that DC has thankfully gone smoke free. Also, the drinks are somewhat expensive for such a dive. For such a busy place, you'd think they could drop the prices a bit. Ok, so admittedly, Rock It ranges from three stars on weekdays to about two or one stars on weekends... But that's pretty normal for any bar, as far as I'm concerned. The reason I like Rock It on quiet nights such as Mondays and Tuesdays as opposed to super busy Fridays and Saturdays is simply that I like singing Karaoke. A lot. I don't even have to be drunk to do it. Seriously. The third thing I do when I go to Rock It, after showing ID and ordering that first drink, is sign up for a song. So I like coming here on a quiet Monday night, and signing up for song after song. I've never had anything to eat here, it doesn't seem like the kind of place that would have anything good, food-wise. But I will say that the bartenders are friendly and have, in more than one occasion, treated me to a complimentary shot or two. On busier nights, the karaoke songs double as dance music and people often take to the small dance floor... Everyone has fun, singers, dancers, and drinkers alike. So come here any night of the week, preferably with a good group of friends and be prepared to either have the best or the worst time of your life. I've been here before, but have been coming more frequently since I moved to the Alexandria area a couple months ago. It's close to my new place and I've had nothing but good experiences here. I've been to every event/special night during the week and for karaoke on the weekends. Patty melt is heavenly. The fries are delicious as well as the wings. I've usually had Jennifer (love that Boston accent) and Reina as bartenders, and they still recognize us even though we come only a couple times a month. Both are awesome and any issues we have with drinks or food, they try to correct as quickly and best as possible. On the weekends servers vary, but they're still sweet as pie. It's not a fancy shmancy bar, though not a dive bar, but it's still a great place with great staff and everyone should visit when they're in old town. read more

I booked a large table for what turned out to be a surprisingly busy night and when we got there, they didn't have our reservation. So, I ask, why bother? It's too bad this place can't find someone else to do the karaoke because the ass clown of a Karaoke Jockey killed our night and made me never want to go back to Rock It Grill for as long as I live. Apparently, he needs to sing his songs throughout the night--pushing people who have been waiting hours to sing off the list. When I asked him why my name hadn't been called up when I knew I should be next, he said I should have thought twice when my friend pulled me onstage. Apparently, if your friend pulls you onstage to sing, he boots you off the list. But, if you're a friend of his, you can sing as much as you want! Hey, play Enter Sandman one more time! Also, the bar is HUGE. So, you're singing in front of 200 people, if you ever get the chance to sing, that is. I think the KJ hates his life and is one of those people who use what ever little power they have in the world to make other people miserable. He said to my sister, "do you think this is easy? The thing you have to realize before going inside is that this is a DIVE BAR, Old Town or not. You can't expect much in the way of food or service or upkeep. It is a dive bar thru and thru. I've never tried the food there, so I can't comment on that. The night's I've been here have always been packed and crowded. But I manage to still have a fun time (again, prepare yourself for a crowded bar before you walk in). I usually get a table and the waitresses seem to be ok with getting drinks and checking if you need more. Not the fastest ever, but they try with a bar full of crazy drunks. I did stand at the bar one night and it was quite clear the bartenders made sure the people they knew (friends and/or regulars) were getting served first. I stood there, with a $20 in my hand, silently begging for the bar tender to make her way down to me (I was on a terrible date and knew the only way to rectify the night was with booze. LOTS of booze). She seemed almost annoyed to have to make a drink for someone she didn't know. Oh well. Karaoke is a big thing here. You either love it and rock out with all the other terrible singers or you loath everyone who does it. I personally love watching people get up and try. Yes, there are terrible singers, but there are regulars who know the words, sing well, and usually have some dance moves to accompany their song. And just to add something totally random, every time I use the ladies room here, I always end up talking to other girls and it's always nice. Someone is frustrated about an unresponsive boyfriend or a bad date or frizzy hair, and everyone in there tends to listen and offer advice/opinions. Yes, totally strange and weird to say about a dive bar, but it's the truth! People have mentioned all the cops that are practically foaming at the mouth to pounce on people who leave Rock It. I've never had an issue. I've walked out plenty (and by plenty, I mean almost every single time) completely drunk and wasted and have never once been stopped by a cop. Look, it's a dive bar that is usually packed on the weekends and is big on Karaoke. Know that going in. If you choose to ignore those facts, you'll probably end up having a crappy time. read more

Note: This review is from last November. The quintessential dive bar. Reminds me of the karaoke bar back home. You always have the regulars singing their usual repertoire of songs. A few pool tables in back. And of course bar food! If you're eager to get up on stage, come early and come prepared. When we got there there was a big group celebrating someone's birthday and it seemed like they had already been there for a while. We were there for a couple of hours and none of our names were called to go up and sing. Of course, the regulars still got their chance. It seemed like if the DJ didn't know you, or if you didn't put your name in early enough you could be waiting all night to sing your song. Overall a great local bar close to our house! We have been here a few times for dinner since moving to the area and have never had a bad experience. Nothing fancy (it's a bar....not supposed to be fancy) with plenty of seating. Our servers have always been great and very attentive! My husband LOVES coming here for wing night on Thursdays. $.50 wings with the purchase of a beverage. Sandwiches/burgers are good too! If you are into people watching, Rock It Grill is perfect for you. Karaoke is prime people watching. We got there at about 8:00 on a Saturday night, and we were a little afraid because no one was in there. However, the place filled up quickly. Most of the tables were reserved, so if you want a good view of karaoke, you may want to call and make a reservation ahead of time. The food was typical bar food. There was a lot of fried food on the menu. Our table ordered nachos and friend pickles. The food was nothing fancy, but it was good with a cold drink. read more

I'll give it two stars for the karaoke and decent atmosphere. Didn't get off to a good start. For the first time since I turned 21 three and a half years ago, the bouncer asked for a second ID because my driver's license said I was 6'2" even though I'm clearly taller. Not my fault the DMV didn't update my info when I got my last license. Believe me, this is the last place I would try to sneak into with a fake. Then, the waitress got like an attitude that we were a large group and ordering a lot of drinks. People in my group felt like we were inconveniencing her by ordering drinks. I'll give her some credit though for apologizing after I confronted her about her attitude. A little frustrating when I always tip 20%. This place is not that great. The food is just plan bar food along with the drinks. The happy hour prices are the only thing this place has going for it. I did hear a podcast on Thursday night about a girl getting kicked out of here and for no reason except for an argument with a friend a few months ago. The video this girl had was shocking and I won't ever be coming back to this place. My opinion is you can find nicer staff and better food on King street, no need to come to this place. read more

I went here last night. It was a great time, but there are things I didn't like. First off, the karaoke DJ was quite annoying. He sang songs throughout the night, even though he is on payroll and has not been buying drinks all night and waiting for hours to sing. Also, I jumped up on stage to give my shy friend encouragement and he made me leave. C'mon, seriously? Also, the song selection was not great. I had to sing obscure old songs. I chose good song, but I don't know what the heck I'm going to sing next time. I've already run out of good songs. Also, I checked my credit card statement this morning and there's an extra charge. Apparently, they charge you money to establish a tab. No one informed me of this. When I called, they assured me that it will be re-credited to my account. *rolls eyes* Overall, I had a really great time last night. The karaoke DJ has to go! We have been to the Rock It Grill a couple of times. This last time was the first time we ordered food. I would say that this place has a nice "divey" aspect to it. There are two pool tables in the back area next to the jukebox. Fun time for drinking. Do not go for the food. We ordered the crab dip and it was absolutely disgusting. We then ordered an order of the fried food plate and that did not help either. Seems like the food is prepackaged and nothing special at all. First off, the commercials for this place are amazing, and in our household we have known and sung the Rock It Grill song for a while now even though we hadn't been before. Finally, we were waiting for a slow friend to arrive at King Street before going to an event and decided to pop in the Rock It Grill while waiting for her to check it out! We were pleased with what we saw. It was pretty empty on a Friday around 6:30, but I managed to snag a beer for $2! Great price for this expensive area. It was a good beer too, I think it was called the "Rock It Ale" actually. Solid choice. Second impression I had was that this is a place that attracts low-key locals who are keep going back for years. I spoke with a friendly guy watching basketball at the bar who attested to that - he had been going for years and years, and still goes there regularly even though he had moved out of the area. Just seems like a nice place. I would of course love to go back for Karaoke, and would like to try the food. Based on their great commercial, the food looked pretty tasty, and watching the terrible singers featured in the karaoke commercial, think I would fit in pretty well there! OH! I have never had a bad time here. No matter how busy it is we always seem to find the last open table. The waitresses are fun and the karaoke mixed in with dance music always has the crowd on the dance floor by the end of the night. I have only sampled the food from other people's orders, I haven't ever ordered anything. The fries are really good though and everything else looks good. Standard bar food. read more

Very entertaining and interesting crowd. It was very non-DC and made for great people watching. The place seemed to be filled with a lot of regulars. We actually had to wait in line for a while because the place was above capacity (1 in, 1 out). Normally, I wouldn't wait, but we made the trip especially for the karaoke. It turned out to be worth it. As far as karaoke goes, there were plenty of good/ decent singers. The karaoke guy was on top of his game. It took a little longer to get through the singers because after so many singers, they take breaks for dancing. The bar area was pretty crowded, but that's typical of any crowded bar. 2 pool tables. Got some pool time in, but there were people challenging for the table. Bathrooms were pretty clean. And yes, there was some serious second hand smoke lingering by the end of the night. I couldn't remember the last time I smelled that much like smoke from a night out. All in all, a good night out. read more
