When you have food allergies, you learn what cuisines most easily accommodate your needs. After suffering with migraines for most of my life, I learned wheat and dairy were triggers and I cut them out of my diet. This was no small thing for a boy raised on burritos and quesadillas. As tasty as they are, I feel so much better without them and, like a bad ex-girlfriend, my life goes to hell if I let them back in. My one solace in this tectonic shift of my Mexican food diet was tacos. Corn tortillas, hold the cheese and I'm safe. Except for when white people decide to get fancy and make corn tortillas with added wheat flour. How weird is this? So weird that on Rocket Taco's already overwrote menu board, they had to add hand written paper signs that read "contains gluten" over all the entries for tacos. Then the lady behind the counter can tell you that regular corn tortillas are available but explains that they're store-bought in a way that made me feel like I was slumming it and putting them out. She even went on to explain that their in-house corn tortillas are only 1/3 wheat flour as if that would make a difference. Do you also offer "just a little cheese" to vegans? Look, it's hard enough to eat out when you have food allergies and I'm hugely appreciative of restaurants that are willing to make accommodations but this was the first time I've been made to feel like I was asking for something weird from someone who literally just offered that accommodation. As for the actual tacos I received, they had two tacos worth of meat split between my three store-bought corn tortillas. If there wasn't so little meat, I'd be more inclined to complain about only one tortilla per cantina-style taco but this is white people's Mexican-style food. The flavor of the carnitas was decent but the texture was wet, shredded pork instead of the crispy heaven you traditionally expect. The 1/4 cup of ranchero beans was not enough to make this a satisfying lunch, let alone feel like $9 worth of food. My wife was similarly disappointed with her "deluxe" tacos. In fact, so unscratched was our taco itch, we ended up hitting Patron in Ken's Corner for dinner since they make great carnitas and keep their corn and flour in separate tortillas. read more

A great new Taco spot on Whidbey! The converted space is charming and intimate and the Tacos are outstanding! You can definitely tell that each taco is hand crafted and made with care inside delicious hand-made tortillas. The beans have an interesting flavor profile that doesn't quite hit my tastebuds in the right way - the only reason this isn't a 5-Star rating. Give the carnitas or chorizo & potato deluxe tacos a shot - they're my favorite. Edit: went back again recently for the carnitas quesadillas, which were amazing, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the bean recipe changed. I am rarely on the south end of the island, and was pleasantly surprised to see this little joint. Any time I try a new taco place I always get the carnitas to judge the quality. I got three deluxe and was very pleased. The carnitas were crispy and flavorful. The pickled onion had an odd flowery flavor that was slightly off-putting but didn't ruin the taco. The tortillas were good and larger than a normal street taco, and the filling was generous, making the $12 price totally worth it. They also use compost-friendly to-go containers that are specially made to keep your tacos standing up. Loved it. I didn't eat the beans last night, but they made killer huevos rancheros this morning. I am looking forward to coming back and trying the griddled cod tacos. While I was waiting, the gal up front took an amazing looking taco salad to a table. I'm going to have a tough choice in my future. Is it authentic Mexican? No. But it's damned good. read more

Um.... definitely just ok. I freaken love me a taco but this place just didn't do it for us. First off they are drastically over priced for tacos. The meat is super bland and super greasy. My husbands drink had ants in it when ordered and they gave him a new one but the whole rest of the meal we were paranoid we'd be eating ants. I feel like for that alone they should have discounted us or something but they didn't seem to care much. We came here on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy but the service was good. You order first and then seat yourself. There is a nice back patio with a big grass area where you can play ping pong or other games. There were 4 of us and we ordered the deluxe tacos which are all 3 for $12. We tried the Carnitas, Griddled Fish and The Sweet Potato. All were delicious. Being a vegetarian, I loved the sweet potato and black been with guacamole. We also tried the Key Lime Pie and Mexican Chocolate desserts. Or favorite was the Mexican Chocolate. We then headed out to the back and played some games. My wife and I drove down from Oak Harbor to Freeland to try this place based on reviews and recommendations, sorry to say we were both a bit disappointed. I had the deluxe chorizo and potato, she had the deluxe grilled cod. The tortillas were good, the service, atmosphere and tacos overall were fine. What really bugged me was that for four dollars for a little street taco, I couldn't even mix and match in order to try different tacos on the menu. I left feeling like I spent too much for what we got. Next time, I'll stay in Oak Harbor , go to Mi Taco, and get better tacos for a better price ( and be able to pick three kinds of tacos if I feel like it). read more

Cute little taco place in Freeland. Chicken tacos were really good. My husband and I both felt like the steak tacos are better than the chicken tacos. Refried beans were really good! Their guacamole is delicious! Hot sauces are well balanced and tasty. The Chorizo Black Bean soup we had today was amazing. Definitely will go back and explore the menu. We went there by reading positive reviews , we drove all the way from Oak Harbor. My child had the tortilla soup and it's bloody awful. Almost drinking like chilli seasoned tomato sauce and not flavorful at all. If chefs got professional sprit to serve food, he/she should check before serving food to customers. I was also expected this place would be great as there's another branch in Seattle. It's not good at all also. You can only dine outside so food goes cold quickly and it effects on food quality. The horchata is a MUST HAVE. I would take the ferry over to Whidbey island just for the horchata, and the tacos! Before I go on too long about the horchata the tacos are nothing short of PURE perfection! They're balanced, tender, flavorful, and downright addictive. On my first visit I would totally give a 5. A few subsequent visits and I would average to 4.5. The carnitas tacos were amazing the first time but the next time they were a little dry (3/5). It could be time of day or when it was made or how busy it was?! First visit was when they opened so A-game all the way. The other visits were Saturdays at peak and it was still great with friendly service but not a 5 start experience especially after dragging my mom here and bragging about how amazing this place is. The parking really sucks so keep that in mind when you go. I will go back but there are so many great places in the area and it's important to explore. read more

My husband and I have been wanting to try out this place. We finally did and it was "ok" I had the chicken tacos and it was bland. My husband had the carnitas and that was much better than the chicken. We also had chips and pico which was yummy. Unfortunately the young man in the back cooking had the worst attitude ever! He kept snapping at the waitresses who were just making sure it was the correct order (it was pretty busy) and the ladies were doing great getting the food to the tables. But my husband and I couldn't believe the attitude from this guy.... That made it a bit uncomfortable. This is a good place to come once in a while. read more

I am in town for a few days from Chicago...where we have A LOT of delicious food. Tacos also happen to be my most favorite thing to eat, and I'm definitely a taco snob. That said, I got the "deluxe" chicken tacos with whatever magic toppings and sauces were on there. I honestly don't remember because I snarfed down that deliciousness so quickly. I've eaten a lot of tacos, and these were easily among my top favorites. The beans that came with them were disappointing...they had some kind of bay leaf or herby flavor which didn't sit well with my tastebuds, personally. However, after sitting next to a couple who were having foodgasms over their shared chocolate mousse dessert, I decided to go back up and get the key lime pie in a jar...and I devoured that bad boy, too. Key lime pie is also in my top 5 favorite desserts, and this wasn't quite as tart as I prefer, but still super delicious. The place was super busy over the holiday weekend, and the set up is a little inconvenient because the register is right inside the door which creates a bottleneck. Everyone seemed to be patient and excited for delicious food, though, and didn't seem to mind. (Maybe I'm just used to impatient and rushed Chicagoans.) I was also happy to see a diverse clientele here - the first time I'd noticed that so far on the island - which I think speaks to the appeal of the place. The one improvement that would make this place extra top notch is if you could order individual tacos instead of 3 of the same. Since they don't, I guess I'll have to go back for a different kind before I leave...but wait...maybe that's what they were going for? Well done, Rocket Taco. read more
