Still the only coffee shop in town. It's right in the center of things and they're serving locally roasted coffee. They always have a small pastry selection and I've seen pizza slices. They have multiple seating areas including one room facing the river. The reason for 3 * is the service. I've yet to feel really welcomed here. Yet to have the person at the register say hello. I try not to ask questions anymore because it seems to be a bother. My visits have felt like I'm on a conveyer belt. Even during busy times, I think there's always time to say hi to the people who are keeping you in a job. This business is a great part of Winthrop yet I remain bummed by feeling zero customer appreciation at the cash register. read more

Cute little bakery in the heart of downtown Winthrop. We stopped her for breakfast and there were so many options it was hard to decide. I went for the handmade bagel and cream cheese and was not disappointed. Asiago with the Rosemary Cran cream cheese was amazing. I would never of thought to put them together but it worked. My husband had the quiche and loved but it was a little small for him so he went back for the cinnamon pull apart and man, it hit the spot. Friendly staff and the made great recommendations for us. They even had gluten and dairy free options which I'll be sure to try next time. I want to eat here day of our trip. read more

Came in July 3 at 1:30 pm. Short line, but lots of chit chatting going on, so the line moves slow. When I got to the counter, the staff member was friendly. I ordered an iced green tea for a hot day. There were 3 staff behind the counter. The girl at the register, friendly but oblivious, started with the next customer. No other staff working on my order, but the male employee behind the counter is drinking and shoving a cookie in his mouth. I decide to move myself in front of the "receiving area" after about 10 minutes when the original staff girl asks if she can help me? "Yes, with the green tea I ordered (random gestures)". Then they decide to start my tea. Annoying, considering they weren't busy at the time. Tea was only okay. Maybe because I was hot and annoyed. Counter girl was nice but staff lacked motivation toward the end of their day. Think I'll try the other coffee place in town next time. read more

Came here for a quick lunch. The sandwiches are pre-made but fresh and good- the lettuce was even still crispy and I'm very picky about that. Coffee is good. We had a quick breakfast our last morning staying in Winthrop. Great ambiance (which you can expect pretty much everywhere in Winthrop) and terrific food. I had a Ginger spice chai latte. Typically, I find chai to be made too sweet, so I ask for half the amount of chai mix with the rest as steamed milk. The drink they made me was perfect with a wonderful ginger spicy kick to it. I paired it with a slice of pumpkin sweet bread, which was perfect -- not too sweet. My husband had a regular latte and berry scone and said it was excellent. read more

The best selection of coffee and pastries in Winthrop, however do not expect great or even good customer service. The barista, I think named Laurie, was extremely rude to both customers and other staff. She completely ignored customers asking about their order, and told the other barista she was frustrated and confused by her actions, in front of at least 10 customers. Good coffee, but the poor service is enough to make me go elsewhere. read more

I didn't have any coffee here, so I can't rate the beverages but overall unimpressed and felt like yelp failed me a little on this one. I think potentially the reason this place is so busy and has so many reviews is because it's pretty much the only thing opened early in winthrop - so if you're trying to hit the road early or have breakfast, this is pretty much your only options. That was exactly what I was trying to do as we were trying to hit the road early to get home from labor day. As I get up the case, I notice that the pastry selection is a little slim. The cinnamon rolls look good though. Then I get a little closer and see a sign for breakfast sandwiches and think oh good I'll get that instead. I get up to the counter and notice that the hot case that probably holds the sandwiches are empty so I ask the girl what's left or how long they take to make and she annoyingly sighs and shakes her head that they don't have any left as if I should've known this as she removes the large sign sitting on top of the pasty case advertising the sandwiches and also adds that they aren't making anymore. Sorry, but I think it's a little silly that the place hasn't even been opened for an hour and they're out of breakfast sandwiches on a holiday weekend? Whatever though, their loss of business. I opted for a cinnamon roll to go. I wasn't given a plastic fork and all that was available at the condiment/coffee counter was metal soooo guess I was gonna eat this thing with my hands in the car. The icing was good but that was about it. The roll itself was undercooked once you got towards the bottom. I like cookies slightly undercooked but I'm not one for under cooked bread dough. Maybe it was an off day, or maybe coming from seattle where bakeries and coffee shops are rampant makes my standards too high.. but really don't understand the stellar reviews on this one. read more

The coffee (Lariat) and tea here are not bad. (Personally I like Blue Star better.) The baked goods, although have good flavor combinations, always seem to be on the tough or heavy side. For example, I don't want to fear my fork will break cutting through the cinnamon roll. The cookies are good though. The place can get busy (almost no competition), but the service is prompt and moves people along. And usually you can find a place to sit. The room in the back is also a nice place to hang out. Although the wifi works fine, there are many signs asking people to not use it heavily. (Why is the entire Methow Valley's internet still this slow?) The decor is gift shop like, with lots of wood, old skis and skates, etc hanging on the walls. Quite pleasant. read more

The new digs are filthy (using a Seattle term for wow, y'all rock!), and wonderful. What a pleasant and enjoyable rendition! Lots of spaces to chill for a bit while you enjoy your espresso and pastries. Jerry Merz's metal wheat shafts are a perfect complement to the decor (hint: go to Twisp Works to see his studio). I come here every time we're in Winthrop (which is at least once a month, and for several days at a time). My raspberry muffin this morning was moist, cooked perfectly, and I even got seeds in my teeth :-) Winthrop is coming up nicely now, with the Rocking Horse addition, and that of East 20 Pizza. read more

We got the carrot cake and an iced latte, which were good, but the older barista lady has a bad attitude. When I saw her making the latte, I wanted to make sure she wasn't making me an iced coffee because she was pouring the coffee from a pitcher instead of making the shots fresh and chilling them. I will not be going here again. The sandwich I had was day old. The lettuce was wilted and the bread roll was rock hard. I asked for it to be heated in the microwave (after I removed the wilted lettuce) and my request was met with rolled eyes. When I asked to have it cut in half I received a similar response. As I ate the tasteless sandwich I looked at all the items in the pastry case and I believe nothing is baked fresh daily. They even have a "day old" shelf where you can by old pizza and other food items, which tells me they are not committed to freshness. This is a great pastry and coffee spot. They have decorated with a cowboy theme, and I thought it was really nicely done. There's always a risk in theme decorating that you take it too far, but the RHB is great. Also, the coffee was surprisingly tasty! It's from Lariat Coffee, which is local to the area. I normally buy Starbucks beans and grind them at home, but I bought a pound of Lariat while in Winthrop, and look forward to enjoying it later. The service was efficient and really cheerful, too. I just stopped in for a quick coffee and baked good before setting off for a mid-morning XC ski, but I wished that I had the time to stay and relax, read a book, or play a game with friends. It has a great vibe. As for said baked good, I chose a banana chocolate chip muffin that did NOT disappoint. Great flavor, plenty of chocolate but not too much, delicious crunch topping, and perfect moist crumb texture. Two coffee roasts were available - french and dark - so if you like dark coffee, you'll be pleased! Only downside?
