jose is amazing! I've brought my older car here a few times. The first time i brought estimates from another mechanic for all the work this other mechanic said needed to be done. Jose had a look at it and went through all of the issues and told me most of them were either perfectly fine, or I could get at least another year or so of use out of them, he told me the other guys were just trying to rip me off. He also saved me over $1,000 on a coolant holder the other company said I needed to replace, and he noticed a loose screw, put a new screw and rubber washer on for free. I never knew this place existed and was up the street from me until my neighbor recommended him after calling Jose (the owner) "the car whisperer". This mechanic actually gets to the root cause of the problem as best as possible and was recently able to get two spark plugs out that were stuck in the engine by letting it sit overnight in solution. Other mechanics would have probably just taken the top part of the engine apart and sent it out but he was able to do it with a little bit of patience. INCOMPETENT!! If there was a zero star I would have used it! I took my vehicle to Rod's auto for basic oil change and to fix the automatic door lock. I was told the lock could not be fixed and I would have to push the lock down manually. I actually believed them. For this repair alone they charged me $ 90.00. A few weeks later, I had yet another problem with the same vehicle. My friend who is a former mechanic told me they simply need to tighten the relay.... a simple fix that should not cost more than $20-$35 to fix. I had someone drop the vehicle off and, when i went to pick it up I got a bill for $209.90. I was told they had to put a brand new starter and "Since the person dropping off the car did NOT tell them that he had to fix the relay problem he went ahead and changed the starter" I HAD NO IDEA, THAT THE CUSTOMER WAS RESPONSIBLE TO DO THE DIAGNOSTICS TO FIND THE EXACT PROBLEMS!. I thought these people were the expert mechanics!!!!! Not to mention the starter they replaced was less than 1 years old I asked for them to return the old starter to me and, I was told they tossed it out! HUMMMM Three weeks later the relay problem reared it's ugly head again. Of course when we called Rod's they asked us to bring the car back to which I WOULD NOT. I went to another mechanic, low and behold, they issue with the relay was NEVER fixed. The other mechanic fixed the relay and, it only cost me @ 30.00. Not to mention, they were able to fix the automatic lock properly for only $ 25.00. This is the same lock Rod's told me could not be fixed. INCOMPETENT!!!! this is the best adjective I can find to describe this auto repair shop. read more

Long story short...honest, reasonably priced, pretty quick The long story.... 2 months ago I got my oil changed at a place in the valley. They told me my front brakes were almost worn down and that I needed new brakes and rotors which I think they told me would have been around $300, which I couldn't pay at that time. Fast forward 2 months to today (a Sunday) when I dropped my car off at Rods with Jose. I told them that the brakes have been screeching (which they have been for months) and that I thought it was from the front. A couple of hours later Jose called to say that the front brakes still have at least 6 months of use left and that the rear need to be replaced. He told me both rotors are good too. I figured while the car was there I might as well get a tire rotation too. The screeching sound is gone from the brakes, so it looks like he's right about the back ones and the guy in the valley is a typical mechanic crook. The total for the rear brakes and tire rotation was $170 after tax. Definitely returning if I ever need any repairs on my car again. read more

I was skeptical due to the appearance of the shop but my experience was pretty much as good as it gets when you need something repaired. From the second we spoke I felt like my car was in good hands and I loved how down to earth the staff is, especially being in West Hollywood. I had a massive electrical problem that, if taken to the dealership, would have been thousands of dollars. I was amazed that Rods was able to figure out everything that needed to be sorted out and then get everything ship/shape for a fraction of the cost. This place is legit! First of all let me start that I never rate a place 5 stars. I went to start my car to find out that my starter went out. What a perfect day to start my Monday morning before going to work! I found Rods Auto Repair based on the ratings and was very skeptical that this place was a scam because let's face it, it's LA and everyone out here is usually trying to take advantage of someone. I called and told him the issue I was having with the car, he tells me to put the key in and play with the starter and boom my car starts. So I bring my car in and yes this place is very small and has no parking because of the location. Everyone says the looks of this place makes you question the business but let me tell you something this place has one of the best customer services I have ever experienced. I had no time to wait so I left my Honda there. Within 2 hours I received a call telling me my car was all set! The only problem is I work crazy hours and couldn't arrive until 8 pm! I tell him my situation and Jose tells me "no problem" and that he'll do a couple of errands and return around that time. Jose went out of his way to fix my car without an appointment, fixed my car in a speedy time, he meets me after the business is closed and all for a little over $200!!!! Are you freaking kidding me?! You have just earned a customer FOR LIFE. THANK YOU JOSE! My One Tip: Mondays and Tuesdays from 9-10 AM are the only days that are a pain because of street cleaning. One of my first experiences with him was with my old car, I had taken it to another mechanic 3x in a row for a problem that they were just raping my wallet for and not fixing the problem. When I pulled into the lot, Jose told me I had a tail light out, so I said we should fix that too. Rods Auto Repair is my go-to shop. Jose is absolutely amazing at what he does and he is a genuinely great guy. I have an VW '06 Jetta that had a few problems. When I took it to the Volkswagon dealer they quoted me at over $4500 because I needed to replace the transmission and they said there was a problem with the engine but that they did not know what the problem was. In in order to flush it, it would be about 500 bucks... etc. etc, the dollar signs kept going up. They also said the car would only run a few more days if I was lucky and of course needed it fixed right away. First off I am a woman dealing with a car problem and second off I am a student and living off my own salary. Nearly $5000 was not an option. I figured the car was better dead than alive and started to look at other used cars and trade-in options. In one last attempt to fix the car up so that I could run it for a few weeks longer... I did some research and found Rod's. I spoke to Jose on the phone who said bring it in and he'd take a look and thank goodness he did. I ended up only having to replace my wires and fix a filter in the engine. He saved me THOUSANDS of dollars, was extremely easy to work with and I am so grateful for his expertise and generosity.
