Driving back to Portland from the coast and found this BBQ goldmine on Yelp! As first timers we had our eyes way bigger than our appetite, but man did this place not disappoint. Even though we navigated and could smell the delicious BBQ, the location throws you off, makes you think you arrived at a church. The sweet Smokey smell helped us power through the fear of bursting into flames and we walked in! The inside immediately lets you know you followed your nose to the right spot! I am pleasantly surprised with this place. I didn't have high expectations but was gladly proven wrong. Pretty much everything we ordered today was phenomenal. My husband ordered the pulled pork with beans and corn; all of which was fantastic. My daughter got chicken strips and fries: the chicken was good, the fries were just okay. I got the Boss Combo with brisket and hot links and tater salad and slaw; the hot links were my favorite, with just a little kick, the brisket was nice and moist, the tater salad was again just okay (needed salt) but the coleslaw was amazing. Great brisket is hard to find outside of Texas- this succeeds though! Rating: A- Baked Beans side- Thick and hearty. Rich, slightly sweet flavor with hints of smokiness. Generous morsels of meat throughout. Rating: A- Tater Salad- Creamy with properly sized chunks of potato. Well seasoned with flavor so reminiscent of deviled eggs. Black olives were an nice addition. I've had west coast style in the past, but ribs and brisket... no way a place could compare to Rudy's BBQ in Texas ( that won Food Network best of the best). Well, I was overjoyed to find that Roger That is on par with great bbq. Their brisket is smoked to perfection and the ribs fall off the bone as it should. Really really really good BBQ. Especially for Oregon, which is never synonymous with BBQ. The outside of the place is easy to drive by, it needs signage and is in fact occupying what looks like an old community center...please do not let that change your mind. Your taste buds will thank you for walking through the door. Inside it very clean, and welcoming. Order at the counter and find a place at one of the large community style picnic tables. I ordered a two meat combo, chose the pork and brisket and they were both incredible. The pork is wonderfully smokey allthough it doesn't overwhelm. It's about as close to North Carolina pork as I've had outside the state. I wish there was a vinegar sauce to go with the pork but that isn't always a popular flavor outside of that state. The brisket is damn near perfection. Just the right amount of fat cap and the bark is unbelievably delicious. The brisket is thick sliced and melts in your mouth. I had the kicked up corn and bbq beans as sides and they were both full of flavor. The corn finishes off with a bit of spice heat and the beans were nice a sweet with some good chunks of meat mixed in. I also got two wimpy burgers, they were actually really good for $1.50 a piece. My only food complaint was the fried pickles, the batter was a bit to thick/tough for my liking. If this place was across the river downtown they would have a line out the door. Meat heaven. Ignore the poor reviews, this place has the best bbq you will find in a several-state radius. I highly recommend ordering the grill master (easily enough for 4 people) as it is a great "sampling" (used loosely as it is an entire rack of ribs, pulled pork, red hots(spicy!), and a generous portion of brisket. It also comes with 3 sides. My son recently experienced this for the first time and said this is easily the best bbq he has ever had. The macaroni tasted like spicy velveeta with pasta - I would try a different side. It's hard to find real BBQ in the NW. Many people make decent attempts. You can definitely find places that serve good BBQ and walk away with a full tummy. The best I've had is in the South. However, I have found a NW gem that is definitely the exception. Roger That was an adventure my son and I went on to find something special to eat. He has gluten and dairy allergies so it's tough to find true good food that has something for him. We went on our adventure and almost drove past. Roger That is in an Old Grange Hall. We walked up and knew it was good...we could smell it. It's a small dining area with a few televisions showing college football (when we went). Get there before they run out! Their open hours are correct but if too many people are in a BBQ mood, they will run out of food. When we went the pork was gone. But I had brisket and my son had a half rack of ribs. They give you plastic utensils...and that's all you need! It was so tender it fell off the bone. My husband and I absolutely love this place. Every time we eat here the food never disappoints, the only thing that disappoints is the fact that sometimes they are sold out of certain foods but that's to be expected. On the flip side to that there are so many other great options to choose from. The brisket is juicy, tender, and has an amazing smoke ring. The spicy Mac and cheese is probably some of the best Mac and cheese with a kick. My son loves the Krinkle fries and burger and he's super picky. The chicken is so tender and moist it's a must try. The staff is always friendly and the establishment is always clean! They do not have standard hours like other businesses but it is worth the trip out there when they are open. I have tried every BBQ place around salem and nothing compares to Rodger that BBQ. My husband said "I haven't had any BBQ this good since I was back in Texas!" I usually do not write bad reviews if it is not that bad, but this visit at Roger That was by far the worst food we had on our trips. My colleague and I ordered a chicken sandwich that took about 40-45 minutes to wait. The food was cold to the table as if it came straight from the fridge. The chicken was undercooked, and fat dripped from the onions - but at least the onions were warm. After calling the friendly lady and complaining that the food was cold and very greasy, she apologized several times and took it back to the kitchen. After another 10-15 minutes, in the meantime, my colleague finished (left) his cold meal because he did not want to complain. The sandwich came back. Hot!! Probably from the microwave because the plate was boiling hot too. I got the feeling (taste) that the chicken was prepared in the same pan as fish was prepared before because the chicken tasted very fishy. We paid, left the rest of the food on the plate, and left the premises. Disappointed, we promised on our way out that we would never come back to this place again. Later that evening, I spent most of the time in the bathroom with a very stomach. Amazing BBQ place tucked away in West Salem. I ordered the big combo deal and it came with a massive amount of meat. The staff are incredibly kind people... I dropped the whole meal in the parking lot while trying to balance the boxes to open my car door, and when I came back in with my boxes of destroyed food, they didn't blink an eye. No fuss, no charge, and they replaced my whole order. I was totally mind blown. And that was before I'd even tasted the food!! Talk about mind blowing! Mushy. Everything is wet-smoked way too long and the result is mushy meat. The ribs are like bones with pulled pork wrapped around them -- no 'tooth' at all. They have plastic cutlery and that's all you need to slice thru the rack of ribs. The brisket is also overcooked, which is a pity because it has a lovely smoke ring and the flavor is good. You literally cannot pick up a (generous) slice of brisket without having it fall apart. The hot links are an exception to the 'mushy' problem -- they are also overcooked but the result is a dense, tough sausage. The sides aren't much to brag on. The fries appear to be out of a bag, the Cole slaw is (wait for it...) mushy, even the beans have been all mushed up into a paste. A single BBQ sauce is on the table: heavy on vinegar and otherwise unremarkable. So why 3-stars if I don't like the food? If i could talk them into pulling the meat out of the smoker a couple hours earlier I think the place would be great. They're cooking the meat this way 'cause it's what they want, and you may like it. I prefer my meat with more substance than oatmeal. read more

Tried this place for the 1st time. They sold out of ribs so I had to get the Brisket plate. It was $16 for only 3 slices. The meat had a good looking bark, smoke ring, tenderness, and the meat was moist without any of the greasyness. Despite the appearance, the Brisket was just OK. The meat didn't seem to have any flavor. I had to use quite a bit of BBQ sauce to make it better. The Hot Link also wasn't that great. It did have a kick though. All in all, the food wasn't really memorable or anything special. I will still go back to try the ribs even though I prefer Spare Ribs over Baby Backs and give the Brisket another shot. Love seeing the big grills and smokers in the back as you -drive in, and the aroma when you hit the door.
