We got a full rack of ribs which came in two pieces: one moist and meaty (4 stars), the other over-cooked, dried out and hard (2 stars). Outdoor picnic area makes this place a keeper for locals. I've had BBQ from all over Oregon and let me tell you, this place is a gem! Most of the locals knows of this place already, but if you are visiting from out of town, or just passing through, you are doing yourself a great service by stopping in... Not only is the menu diverse and the quality top notch, but the service and ownership is genuine - family owned and operated. I am always greeted with a smile and conversation, despite how busy they are or how long the line goes out the door... Speaking of "lines", this place is NOT open during regular business hours (or whatever that means to you). The place is open from Thursday through Sunday (noon to whenever they "run out of food"). I suggest arriving as close to noon as possible to beat the line... I've been to Roger's probably 50 times. I can testify to the quality and tender/ juiciness of the pork ribs, baked beans, Wimpy cheeseburgers (which are 2 for 3 dollars btw - excellent bang for your buck!), spicy mac and cheese, and fresh crispy coleslaw. All of these are top notch and the portion size is more than generous!.. What stands out to me, however, is the consistent high-quality customer service and their appreciation they have for your business. Somehow the owner (Roger) and several of the employees know me by name, despite them seeing me no more than 1 or 2 times a month. I appreciate their appreciation for business... Roger takes the time to ask you how you are doing, how you liked the food the last time you came in, and shares any menu ideas or new concoctions him and his team are brewing behind the counter. For example, I asked him if he had any special plans for Thanksgiving last November, and Roger passionately shared that he was taking pre-orders for turkey and stuffing, also shared with me some menu ideas he had about possibly doing a roast!.. It is unique interactions like these, combined with the consistent high quality menu, that make Roger that BBQ my favorite restaurant. Thu & Fri they open at 4, Sat & Sun they open at noon... they close when the food is gone... so depending the on supply and demand of the day, you might get there only to have disappointed tastebuds. Service: Stellar! Staff is friendly, outgoing and VERY informed about their product. The Sides: Great selection! Deep fried pickles: Oh ma Lawd!!! Delish! The perfect combination of tart, fried and the new best friend for your ranch dipping sauce! Coleslaw: Pretty standard although they do add bits of pineapple (would love to see more!) which gives it a new fresh twist. Tater salad: Again pretty standard with a twist of olives which is good but not really fitting (in this gal's opinion) for a bbq place. Fries: Yummy, salty crinkley fries... Kicked-up Corn: Think Creamed Corn with an attitude! Flavorful with a touch of spicy... Yum!! The Meats: Ribs were sold out so we did the brisket/chicken combo. Brisket: Tender, a little on the dry side but not too bad. Flavor was a little disappointing but not horrible all (think upscale pot roast). I was hoping for more smoke flavor. Chicken: Darn near cooked to perfection! Tender & Juicy with the right amount of smoke and flavor. So all in all a great little place and in my top 10 of bbq favorites. This was the second time in a row I got home with my take out order to find no bar b a sauce include with the bris and chicken meat. I noticed a sign that mentioned charging extra for "extra" sauce but nothing about not including any sauce unless you ask! The brisket and the chicken breast did not have the good flavors that we had come to except from Roger That, I thought they were very bland. Not sure if it's the wood used or the procedure?! So my husband told me about this place a few months ago. It wasn't until a week or two ago I tried this place. I think I found my new taco joint! Nothing is better than bbq and tacos! My husband got a sandwich and they don't skimp on the meat that's inside this thing! Plus is came with a side as well. I got the brisket tacos and you get 3 tacos topped with onions, cilantro and their taco sauce. I've never had brisket tacos but tn's my new go to! They are only open a few days a week and I hear they sell out quick and often have a line out the door! When we went on Saturday around 1:00pm, it wasn't crazy busy but their were some packed tables! The worst BBQ I've had outside of hotel catering. Pulled pork was served in a bath of grease. "Spicy Mac" was macaroni pasta mixed with nacho cheese (you know from the pump?). For the price and high reviews I was expecting something special but instead we got poor service (staff member complained about us sitting on the lawn because it was "too far of a walk") and pretty crappy food. This is the tenth and last midvalley BBQ I have tried. I went over on a Sunday, about half an hour after they opened. Tried to phone ahead but the phone just rang and rang. Was third in line, good separation, outside, not all patrons masked. Prices have gone up, understandable, boss combo is now $21. Rib portion was very generous, seemed larger than a half rack. Two thick slices of brisket. Meat prep was totally competent but no better than my other suppliers. Sides came in standard 3/4 cup (I measured) styrofoam cups. Slaw almost inedible, beans out of a can, augmented with meat scraps, same as everywhere. The other patrons were obviously locals that knew the menu intimately. I overheard them ordering very elaborate arrays of dishes. For them, this place rates more stars. The receptionist seemed to take an instant dislike to me. I waited 25 minutes for my order and did not enjoy the experience. It's much easier for me to go to Cindy Lou's or even Double JJ's in Millersburg, deal with pleasant proprietors, and get my order in five minutes. read more

Much better than that other BBQ restaurant downtown. This was worth the drive from the other side of the river, through that lovely West Salem rush hour traffic, and that's saying something. My ribs were perfectly cooked--very tender with perfect pink ring. I wish they'd been a tad more flavorful. The sauce at the table helped. My wife's chopped chicken sandwich was excellent--the onion ring was a nice texture contrast. The kids shared a children's chicken strip meal, which was very generously sized. From what I saw, the menu didn't mention alcoholic beverages. It wasn't until I was ordering that I saw a large ice bucket with beer and cider. It was inconvenient having to dig through the ice to see the selection with a long line behind me. Perhaps a small sign near the register with a list? And yes, as others have noted, the line was long and slow, even at 4:30 on a Friday. I waited about 15 minutes to place my order. On the other hand, our food arrived quite promptly, in spite of the crowd. I was happy to see that most of the menu was still available when I was there. The dining room was typical BBQ picnic table style setup with western-ish decor and TVs. The lighting was pretty dim. I had a hard time seeing my food, and my vision isn't that bad. read more

Easy ordering, you can see the guys in the kitchen working away . I was pretty hungry and ordered their "Boss" plate with chicken and brisket..WOW huge thick slices of brisket..large chicken breast..great sides. Just way to much left with half in a box ( consumed later). Daughter ordered the brisket tacs..very large tacos..lots of filling/meat, and fries..which consisted of basically a serving tray sized serving! The brisket was good, chicken also..the sides delicious. Atmophere excellent for a BBQ joint. Sunday my husband and I went to Roger That BBQ. They have a nice dog-friendly patio area where you can eat. But we got our pork and brisket to go. We drove 5 more minutes to Cubanismo Winery and ate our BBQ there along with a glass of wine (also dog-friendly with a beautiful view.) After having been here a number of times over the past year (we live within walking distance) I've come to the conclusion that while the food is mostly good, the only spectacular items on the menu are the brisket and the BBQ beans. The macaroni and cheese is literally disgusting. Imagine someone dumped the liquid cheese (it's not real cheese) from 7 Eleven all over the pasta, that's what this is. I'm not kidding when I say that Kraft macaroni and cheese is better than this garbage. The fries are a complete joke as they are just frozen store bought fries. I understand that this place isn't known for the sides, but you would think they would at least attempt to put some effort into making everything taste good. The brisket is of course amazing, the BBQ beans are amazing, and the wings are amazing as well. So after a year of eating here consistently I've come to the conclusion that it's just "okay". If the sides were better (which would make for a better overall meal) then I would be willing to give it 5 stars. read more
