A steak place that doesn't know how to cook steak ... And get orders correct. With a party of 13, we decided to reserve the private room in the back. At first everything was running smoothly until the food came out. Most everyone got the steaks or some special. Here were the first problems: - Not everyone got steak knives after asking 3 times. - 2 ribeye steaks were overcooked (asked for medium rare and got well done). - 1 fillet steak was still alive when asked for well done. - All plates were made out of metal so it burnt your hand when touching (made an infant cry instantly). - Brussel sprouts were cooked whole, too big to take one bite and was incredibly greasy. - Someone got the wrong salad. - Someone got the wrong vegetables. So that's where the downfall began. I usually don't enjoy complaining but when a restaurant is advertised as being high-end, I expect more, and there was more ... just more issues. We asked for a refry on these steaks. It took them so long that everyone else finished eating already. When they came out, we got more problems: - 1 ribeye didn't have a bone for some reason (but everyone did). - 1 "fillet" steak was actually a ribeye cut covered in sauce to hide it. Here comes the unprofessionalism from the staff. When asked about the ribeye bone, she just said that "they" removed it for you. I'm asking, "Why?" An $85 ribeye should always have the bone. I never asked to take it off. The ignorance continues with the "fillet." I know what a fillet looks like and when asked about the cut, the waitress had the audacity to say, "They flattened the fillet for you..." I'm asking, "Why?" We all knew what a fillet looks like compared to a ribeye. It wasn't a fillet. What professionally trained chef would ever flatten a fillet? How ignorant do you have to be to even say this? The ridiculousness continued with the floor manager coming in, apologizing, gave our first round of drinks for free, 1 steak for free and gave us a business card to contact the general manager. Wait. What? It's a Saturday night, during MLB spring training and the GM isn't around? And you want us to contact them? You want us to do your work for you, to contact the GM? In the end, I'm only frustrated because the steak was $85 and it felt like I could have cooked this better at home. The steak looked like you bought it at Trader Joe's. This whole experience, was not the waitress' fault. She was dealt with a difficult situation because of the back-of-house, the designer of the restaurant and everything else around her. Who is expediting the food? Who is in charge on a Saturday night? Who is the chef? Does this person know the basics of cooking and plating? Who here cares about their food? Who designed the metal plates to be burning hot to guest? I think I found a new nominee for Kitchen Nightmares. If you want to try this place, get the steak well-done if you want medium-rare. The self-appointed king of speakeasies is back at it for another one. I stopped by Rokerij for some drinks on a Tuesday evening. It's located inside Richards, a Southwestern Mexican restaurant. Parking is valet only (they have a large lot, so it's a money-making scheme. I'm never a fan of this). I parked on a residential side street a few minutes away by foot. Ambiance (3.5/5): My love of speakeasies runs deep. I've also read a lot about the history of speakeasies. A true speakeasy won't have any signage showing you where it is. It should be hidden, making getting there a bit of an adventure. Rokerij isn't quite that. There's signage outside in the parking lot. And also signage on the patio pointing you in the right direction. With that being said, it's still a bit of an adventure to find your way there. I'll give you a partial hint: look for a staircase. Once I got there, I was impressed with the intimate environment. There are some seats at the bar and some comfortable sofas. Despite it being a Tuesday, it was almost full. The vibes are great. Service (2/5): This was the biggest pain point. Our waitress started off well, bringing us water and checking in with us with regularity about halfway through our time there. However, she ended up leaving her shift without informing us. When a waitress has an open table and she's done with the shift, the norm is for her to stop by and inform us. You're either transferred to another waiter or you close out. When we were ready to leave, we ended up trying unsuccessfully for way too long to get another waiter or the bartender's attention. No luck for quite a while. I should have just walked up to the bar. Some definite chinks in the armor here. Food (4.5/5): The food served here is the same as Richardson's. And the food at Richardson's is fantastic. It's a bit expensive. And some dishes have generous portion sizes while others are quite small, but overall, the food is quite good. After 9 p.m., they offer discounts on select appetizers and drinks. I ended up getting the bacon-wrapped scallops app. The scallops were perfectly pan-seared, wrapped in some delicious bacon, and in a delectable Southwestern sauce. The only problem? Super small portion size (two scallops on the smaller side). Drinks (3/5): When it comes to speakeasies, I'm looking for creative cocktails that use interesting blends of flavors and ingredients. Not standard cocktails you'll find at most bars. Their cocktail menu is tequila-forward which is fantastic. The problem? A lot of usual suspects like margaritas, palomas, and tequila old fashioneds. While I love the reverse happy hour, the drinks weren't quite there. With a more sophisticated/creative cocktail menu, and better service, Rokerij could be a top-notch spot. read more

We went here again with another couple and I have to say they consistently impress. We sat downstairs and recognized our waitress as she has been there 6 or 7 years now and is always on point. We had the stroganoff with filet and it was great! It has a spicy Wende but not overwhelmingly so. Great meal. To start we got the appetizer of Mexican sausage which was fabulous. I had a black manhattan which was one of the best I have had as well. I just love it when things are consistently great and the Rokerij just nails every time. Well done! read more

We keep coming back because every time they out do our previous experience! I made a Valentines Day reservation in advance (in December for Feb 14th) and they reseved a cute corner booth with flowers and pillows, so sweet. We had the horchata martini, chile relleno (cheese, asada, and duck) with sides of corn, broccolini, acorn squash, and gcp (green chile potatoes) and loved everything! The Rokerij nails New Mexico flavors, and those flour tortillas were the perfect soft base....absolutely fantastic. In the cellar-level ambiance, (with valet parking only, FYI), Trey (bartender) and Pablo (busboy) were pure entertainment. The brunch enchiladas were delicious, though the shrimp was more "salad shrimp" than "star shrimp." Overall, delicious...just maybe rethink that shrimp choice! read more

Definitely time for an updated review!! We wanted to celebrate my sister's birthday, and of course her request was to go to Rokerij. We decided to do a Saturday lunch, which is when they serve brunch. They had both breakfast and lunch type menu items available. There were five of us and everyone enjoyed their food immensely. Three of us had the skewers which are comprised of chicken, sausage, beef and shrimp. There are two skewers and each is loaded with one each of these items. It is served with Some of the best beans I have ever had and rice and multiple dipping sauces. If you have not had the opportunity to experience, Rory and their sauces, you are definitely missing out. My sister had the bacon wrapped shrimp and my daughter's friend had steak. Everything was cooked to perfection and as requested. It is always very dark in here so be sure to bring your phone if you need to see the menu a little better with a flashlight. Your eyes adjust to the darkness overtime, but it's a little startling at first. You will also be shocked when you walk back outside into the Phoenix sunshine, lol Parking can be really tight here and they do not do valet during lunch. Total for us was $135 before tip. read more

The atmosphere and overall vibe at Rokerij are great, but the service and allergy awareness were disappointing. I have a dairy allergy, and before ordering I specifically told my server multiple times that I needed my meal to be completely dairy-free. I chose the skewers because they seemed like one of the safer options. When the food arrived, I noticed what looked like cheese or a dairy-based topping and asked again to confirm that it was dairy-free. I was assured that it was. After taking my first bite, the server came back about 10 seconds later explaining that the dish actually contained butter after talking to the chef. At that point, I had to stop eating, spit out the piece of meat I had, and wait for a replacement meal to be prepared. They brought it back out so fast. As I went to eat my second bite I saw a loose piece of meat off the screwed. And it was the piece I had originally spit out cause of the butter. DISGUSTING. No wonder it came out so fast. They just replaced the bottom half and left the meat. If a restaurant has to take breakfast a meal it needs to be completely remade. Not just replace. Food allergies are not something that should be taken lightly. Thankfully, my dairy allergy isn't life-threatening, but enough that I would have issues for serval days, but for someone with a severe allergy, this kind of mistake could have much more serious consequences. While the staff was apologetic, the situation ruined my evening and left me concerned about the restaurant's allergy protocols. I really wanted to love this place because the ambiance is fantastic, but I hope they take allergy communication more seriously moving forward. read more

Overconfident, Overbooked and Entitled Waitress tracked us down in the parking lot demanding more of a tip-"huh" ???? Dear Rokerij Team, I am writing this review to share my concerns regarding a recent dining experience I had at your basement restaurant on April 5, 2025. Having enjoyed many meals at Rokerij in the past, I was very much looking forward to another pleasant evening; however, this visit left me feeling disappointed. While the ambiance and food were up to my expectations, the level of service I encountered did not align with the high standards I have come to associate with your establishment. To begin, despite having made dinner reservations over a month in advance, we arrived 10 minutes before our reservation time only to find that our table had been given away. "No apology" "No regrets" I immediately received the Spanish Inquisition statements and questions, treated like I was lying all together about making the reservation. "Horrible start"-why didn't I just run for the hills? We were informed that we could wait in the downstairs bar for our reserved table to become available. In hindsight, we should have opted to find another restaurant, as the waiting area and the experience there were regrettable. The waitress we encountered was unprofessional, exhibiting a passive aggressive sarcastic attitude and making us feel as though we were inconveniencing her. Additionally, when it came to service during our meal, it was overall quite lacking. The food arrived incomplete, and we had to repeatedly ask for items that were supposed to be included with our orders. After finishing my meal, I intended to leave a tip that I felt accurately reflected the service I received. To my dismay, the waitress approached me outside while I was waiting in the parking lot for valet service and demanded a larger tip. I found this approach to be both inappropriate and unsettling; tipping should be a voluntary reflection of the service provided, and feeling pressured to increase the amount detracted from my overall experience. I believe in the importance of constructive feedback, as it can help uphold the quality and reputation that Rokerij is known for. It would be unfortunate for such service issues to overshadow the otherwise delightful dining experience that your restaurant is capable of delivering. I sincerely hope to see improvements on my next visit-if there is one. Judging by the past few experiences, I am confident that "the beatings will continue until the morale improves." read more

I visited this restaurant for my brothers birthday and we were a party of 8 people. It was not very busy inside when we went so it was very quiet. We all ordered cocktails and the drinks and food were very good. However, as the evening got later our server stopped visiting our table. The food runners were the ones to drop the food and nobody came to check on us after we got our food. We had to flag people down if we needed anything and we never saw our server. We saw her standing around the restaurant but she did not come help us or ask us how things were. Unfortunately this led to not the greatest experience at Rokerij. read more

This is definitely a hidden gem in Phoenix: New Mexican cuisine in an underground speakeasy. It's dimly lit and has an intimate atmosphere, with a bar area and tables with fireplaces. It's so cozy you can spend hours here. Service is friendly and knowledgeable. The menu has good variety, even offering seafood. I really enjoyed the chile relleno. It's also a special place to me: my girlfriend and I came here on our 2nd date and spent the whole evening here. We plan on coming back for each anniversary from now on. read more

Came here for a meeting and our first time. Where it fell flat for us are a few things to consider: - Food was greasy. Bland and oversalted at the same time which is crazy to say but if you gather the different components of a dish. For example, I ordered the rokerij steak with no bacon. There is a sauce drenched on top of the steak and crab which was salty but the steak was bland and had no flavor. The steak was overcooked for my liking (I prefer medium rare for filet mignon or ny strip). - price is pretty pricey for a quality like this. The nicer cuts of steak were about $70 each. - ambiance feels dark and we were seated in a private room but everytime a server comes they would forget to close the door. Making it very hard to hear the other person. - A pro is that the cocktails were decent. Another is they do provide complimentary valet which takes out the stress of finding a parking in their small lot. Would I return? No probably not. Phoenix is a growing city with tons of food potentials and options that would easily be a better bang for your buck. read more

I came here for the first time with friends a few months ago and have been dying to come back. Well I finally got to:) I love eating downstairs, very ambient with the low lit loungey vibes. I love the unique menu items and rotating specials. The first time I was here I had the schnitzel and it was so good, the second time I had a duck pasta and it was also exceptional. Our server was super knowledgeable and attentive. I can't wait to bring more friends here and try new menu items. My only complaint would be they do not split checks so keep that in mind. I've worked in several restaurants, I know it can be a little annoying at times but overall only adds a few mins max, would definitely improve the customer experience if they started doing that. read more

3.8 stars is a very accurate Yelp rating. I fell down a Reddit rabbit hole and discovered that Phoenicians love, love, love this place. Wanting to experience something different than what I can get in LA, I booked a dinner resy. First of all, the dining area is dark as hell and deprived of any type of personality. It gives Viking vibes. The restaurant doesn't have a ton going for it ambiance wise. For food, we started with the New Mexican sausages ($19). They grill Schreiner's pork sausages and served them on top of roasted sweet onions and pinto beans. On top of flour tortillas. This combination of sausage, beans, and tortilla was interesting (?) though quite bland. I ordered the pasta Heidi ($31) which, as I could decipher, is a regional creation. It's green chili linguine with grilled chicken with chipotle cream sauce. Despite having so many flavors - green chili + chipotle - the dish fell a little short for me. Sure, it was creamy, but not much else. While I'm glad I got a chance to sample New Mexican cuisine, the food and dining experience was very okay. If I ever find myself back in the Phoenix area, I'd like to check out another Richardson establishment. read more

We were visiting from out of town, and someone recommended this place. Service was good, and the restaurant was cute! I highly recommend the New Mexico enchiladas with both red and green chile sauce. If you can handle spicy, the red chile sauce was amazing. A friend ordered a carbonara dish with shrimp, and it was fantastic. Update: They took down my Google Review. Tonight was a catastrophic failure of this business as a whole. I used to love this place. I've always bragged it up as the "go to" place for steak, but that ends today. This place has gone so far downhill, that we may have discovered the lost city of Atlantis. At least that would explain why the meat looks and tastes like something you'd find at the bottom of the ocean floor. We had a large party (12) in the private room. This room has the acoustics of a YMCA pool house. If you have more than 2 conversations going at one time, your ears will be ringing at the end of the night. We had 12 people and 3-4 conversations, I might be legally deaf now. The wait staff was atrocious and undersized for the size of the party. It seemed like 15-20 minute intervals between visits. In fact, the best example was my meal. It was inedible (we'll get to that), but the wait staff did not return after the delivery of the meal until all meals were fully consumed. I was not able to even lodge a complaint, as there was no one to lodge it to. By the time the wait staff returned (30 minutes?), we were all ready to leave. I went home hungry and thirsty. I couldn't even wash down the taste due to the lack of refill service. I ordered the peppered steak, which was described to be a 'filet'. I requested medium. What I received was neither peppered nor filet nor medium. More than 50% of the cut of beef was tendon, so I would argue I was served well-done tendon. The other 50% looked like it had been microwaved or broiled (with no sign of searing). The small amount of meat I was able to attempt to consume was chewy and tough. I would guess low-grade tenderloin at best. The baked potato was also inedible. I was not able to break through the hard cheese to get to the potato, as I did not invite Chuck Norris to dinner. I requested the steak be removed from the bill, but I didn't pay (thank god) so I'm not really sure if it was. I was courteous and didn't make a big deal out of it at the time, because I'd much rather leave a public review for others to read so they can avoid being served microwaved tendon. I will not be dining here ever again. Please follow in Durant's foot steps and sell the business to someone who knows what they are doing. Only then will I return. read more

Sadly this place was not very good. First off, on the menu they mention they encourage everyone to order their own entree as there is a split plate charge of $10. With that, we decided to order 2 entrees. Thing is the food was not great that we should have just ordered one entree and then paid the $10. The New Mexico Enchiladas was dry and salty. The green chili that came on top of the enchiladas were so dried up already when it arrived at the table. The plate was so hot that it dried up all the food. The rice was extra dry. The rice and beans were salty. Carne Adovada was no surprise and was the same taste, dry and salty. The Raul's Famous Onion Rings were good especially with the options of sauces the onion rings come with. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The place was very dark and since I didn't like my food i didn't finish it, but didn't want to waste so decided to package it to go. We went to Rokerij as a party if 6 last night and were personally let down. We have been to Rokerij several times before but it had been a while. The biggest issue was service but there were a few other things that didn't work well for us along the way. Our dinner server was unpleasant and almost robotic. The appetizers and drinks were delicious as they always have been (steak tartar, seasonal roasted garlic plate, and bacon wrapped shrimp). For dinner, each couple ordered a similar combo of one carne adovada and an enchilada plate with christmas sauce. Again, we have been there before and know spiciness varies and the server always warns. Our food arrived promptly and was warm. The green sauce on the enchiladas was so spicy that two of us could not eat it at all. The server did not ask to help in any way with this. That was fine. We didn't want to make an issue. The man who cleaned the table for us was amazing and offered to box everything to go. The first real issue was when our checks came. We asked to split the check by couples and we would each take an appetizer. She refused to do this saying she could split it evenly three ways. We asked again and still she refused. This had never been an issue before. Still we didn't want to make an issue so we just split the check evenly. We asked for bags for our take out food that never came. After dinner, we went downstairs to have some drinks. At this time it was almost 10pm. The bar was pretty full but there was one booth in the corner that could accommodate our party. We were told that the would not sit us there unless we were having dinner down there. A bit later we watched them sit a couple in the same booth. Also, there was a very pungent and foul smell of sewage in there. It was pretty unappetizing. If you want amazing prickly pear margaritas and yummy appetizers before heading somewhere else for dinner, this might be your spot. Ok I have been to the Rokerji one time in the past but I never had a chance to do a review. I met up with a friend for dinner and a catch uo session and it was a great experience. Before my friend arrived I ordered the salmon bites and a ginger beer and the Salmon bites were delicious and it was a nice surprise to have capers on top when my friend arrived the server was prompt and took our orders. My friend order a ribeye and salad and I ordered the gumbo pasta. The portions were amazing and the pasta was divine. OMG I ate that pasta for 3 days after and it was delicious. My only thing was I think we were near or next to a backroom and it started to smell stinky at one point during the night but only for awhile. When you spend $150 for 2, you would expect to have a phenomenal dining experience. Rokerij overcooked and over salted their food. That is my biggest regret - I wish we just spent $10 extra dollars to share a mediocre dish vs ordering 2 dishes. I ordered the New Mexican Surf and Turf and my husband had the Carne Adovada. The shrimp were too salty and lost their flavor with the bacon wrapped around them. The steak had some pieces cooked medium rare (how I ordered) and others that were closer to medium/medium well. The enchiladas were sad looking and also very salty. The meat my husband ordered was dry and over salted. The rice and beans were awful - he said Filiberto's has better... The one silver lining is the onion rings - I did enjoy them. The drinks were okay. I liked the CBD 75 a lot. The smoked peach margarita was good too. My husband did not like his mule though. The restaurant is dark inside and we were sat at a very small table for our party size. It felt very crammed. The service was okay, but nothing to write home about. Also 2 people noticed that there was vomit in the men's bathroom. Safe to say I will never return here and would not recommend anyone dine here. Came here with my husband for happy hour before we went to Richardson's for dinner. What an atmosphere! It is so, SO dark with a unique ambiance-- it is truly a dim basement bar. We sat right near the fireplace which was so lovely and intimate. I ordered their mezcal grapefruit cocktail and he had a classic old fashioned. I'm not sure why I expected the cocktails here to be mediocre but I was blown away; mine was incredibly good, smooth and felt upscale. Sipping these next to the fire was so enjoyable. We weren't planning to order food but decided to get onion rings from the happy hour menu. My goodness, were they delicious! I understand why they are famous. The rings themselves were huge with juicy onions inside them and a nicely textured crisp exterior. They were accompanied by four sauces, arranged next to each other on the platter. They were each individually SO good and as we continued to dip, the sauces blended together to make a single sauce. It was awesome and such a good idea to have them on the same plate so the taste transforms the more you eat them. We had good, attentive service as well. Both bartenders were kind, helpful and pleasant. I was shocked I didn't know about Rokerij and all of the concepts near each other. I would absolutely go back to Rokerij probably again during happy hour which was already pricy but so worth it. read more
