Jim and his team did a great job creating our desert backyard. We wanted a path for our dogs to enjoy the yard without having to walk on the larger rocks. Jim designed a very attractive and practical path. He also made some excellent suggestions about small boulders, the trees and plants, and lighting. They did a beautiful job using pavers to make a place for the bbq, an area for the exercise equipment and a place for the trash/recycles to be easily taken to the street. Don & Jim did an amazing job! Our neighbor recommended Rolling Rock because they did such a good job with her landscape. They expanded the pavers on our driveway, updated our backyard with travertine, added a putting green & built a gas fire pit. They also solved some of our drainage issues. Absolutely perfect from start to finish. The installatation, of a fairly large project, went flawlessly during the scorching summer heat. Karen's absolutely essential and out-of-box (but not killer expensive) design ideas can make a huge difference. I have posted before and after pictures under Robert S. The yard actually looks better now (picture was taken before I figured out how to stop rabbits from eating the ground cover..."first world problems") because Rolling Rock came in with some additional and replacement plants and additional decorative rocks (they have this great source so you can avoid generic boulders and gravel). Jim is a star with a heart of gold and is right in there with the guys. Once it gets going, it is like a choreographed dance. Like any small company excellent in their area, they get very busy and can't please all the people all the time...but t they try!!! Once they are working with you, you are part of their family. They come right out if there are any issues and have more than stood by their warranties (without us having to ask for them to stand by their warranty...they just do it). Don and Rolling Rock Landscape do an amazing job on landscape design, installation, and cleanup! Over the years, they have created several backyards for me in various houses, including our latest backyard a few weeks ago. They also have redone a builder-installed front yard that was severely lacking, making our house look completely different (and so much better)! Don was very responsive and professional, seeking information about what we wanted and giving great suggestions/input to design the backyard of our dreams. Our new home has a huge but oddly shaped backyard and Don and his crew were able to create a backyard that makes sense and looks great. We LOVE our backyard, and that is all thanks to Jim and Don (owners) and Karen (designer). Karen provided great help during initial consultation and design. Her experience and advice were extremely helpful in getting us through the design stage. There's always a little give and take between concept/design and the reality of getting everything in the ground and looking beautiful in the end. Without question, this is where Jim and Don and the crew absolutely shined! No detail was too small. Every bit of our input and feedback was honored. The dedication to a quality finished product was extremely high. The old saying goes, "quality, service, price: pick any two." With Rolling Rock, we got all three. We pushed the guys into a bit of new territory, including their first experience with building an outdoor shower that included hot and cold plumbing. That included putting up with a fair amount of my opinions and input, as well as a specific shower fixture that I had ordered, not to mention my indecision on how to light the shower area. They put up with all of it, handled every detail with grace and good humor, and produced a terrific final product. How much did we enjoy these guys? The day after they were no longer on site, I texted Jim that I missed saying good morning to them. True story. They are great guys with a very capable, hardworking and respectful crew. We have worked with two other hardscape/landscape companies in the past (at our previous home, over the years). In both cases, we had good experiences but not great ones. Importantly, those other companies were done and then disappeared. By contrast, we love that Rolling Rock schedules a 30-day follow-up visit to go over any issues that emerge - and to deal with any dead plantings, etc. We are impressed by and grateful for that kind of proactive follow-up and willingness to stand by the work. There were no budget issues or surprises on Rolling Rock's part. Truth be told, Jim and Don were very gracious about doing little extra things with extra materials, and/or taking the initiative to get an extra this or an that at no cost, because they knew the yard needed it to make the job complete. We are very cost-conscious. Not only was Rolling Rock the best bid we got, but it was also the best experience (as mentioned above). Best of all, we got a really terrific outcome for us to enjoy for years to come. Ours was a new construction situation, and we have worked with at least six different contractors in the past few months regarding the completion of our house. Rolling Rock Landscape came my way by reference of Thunderbird Pools & Spas who were installing my in ground pool (see also my review on Thunderbird). We met with Representative Karen a couple weeks after the pool process was underway. Karen has an amazing depth of plant knowledge, especially for the Phoenix valley climate. Her recommendations of not only what we might want to consider but the why we should consider such-and-such was a truly easy and fun experience, especially for my wife. She has what was essentially a library of choices on her iPad so while she may have had an idea we could also pick-and-choose from a variety of options. Once the pool was complete Karen immediately scheduled a team that included owner James Perlow and four of the friendliest guys you would ever want to meet in Roman, Jeremy, Ceasar and Eric. These guys worked their tails off for 2-days building and putting the finishing touches on our dream backyard. I got to know them a little bit too, which for me is all part of the experience. Nice guys and I wish them the best. It's important to mention that once Jim appeared on the scene you knew who was in charge. It was great to be able to speak with the owner who is a real hands-on guy from toting wheel barrels to running the Bobcat to answering all my questions. It's obvious why Thunderbird gives Rolling Rock Landscape the nod as a recommended partner with this great team of doers. So bummed about this company! I was looking forward to working with them, but they never followed through. Had Karen come out and take a look at everything. She said shed get back to me within a week. That never happened. Two weeks later I called her she said it would be another week. One week after that I called her and she couldn't even remember who I was. Never got even one call or email back after all of that!! Clearly she never wanted my business and instead of just telling me, strung me along. I feel that I had some different ideas that she didn't want to work with because it wasn't in her comfort zone so that was that. Not dependable at all!! Up until a few weeks ago I'd been using Rolling Rock since 10/2013. We started with general landscape maintenance once a month with the intention of moving to twice a month once Summer came. Even though we were scheduled for monthly service they would never show up. 30 days would come and go, then 40 days, then 45 days.. and nobody would show up, no phone call, no reason. I routinely had to text Don the owner to find out when he planned on having his guys show up. When the guys did actually show up the guy with the lawn mower would constantly run over my sprinkler heads and destroy them. I didn't mind at first, it happens.. I'd just go around replacing them. But after the 4th time and twice on the same sprinkler? It was an obvious disregard for my property and how fast they could get the job done kind of mentality. The guys with the blowers would blow my welcome mat in to the bushes along with my shoes and not replace them. I'd find my shoes under the bushes and my welcome mat rolled up like a burrito. I text Don over the Summer and told him I thought I had an irrigation issue and that my bushes out front were dying.. He text me back saying he'd have his guys install new drip heads - they never did. I personally went around to all of my plants and installed the new drippers myself. I text Don on July 1st and asked him to personally come out to my property so I could address all of these issues with him in person. I also had some ideas for upgrading my landscaping. Don text me back and said he would send out his foreman to meet with me. So Wyatt his foreman shows up late to my property and I stand out front with him and start explaining to Wyatt the areas the team isn't working on like my sage bushes out front. I then start discussing what I want done to the property for the upgrade. Wyatt, with clipboard and pen in hand takes no notes. After 20 mins of talking to him and telling him how I want to design the front I say to him "Are you gonna remember all that? You're not taking any notes" and he says "I'll write it all up later" - We get to the backyard and I start explaining what I want done in the back. After 15 more minutes and no notes being taken by Wyatt, he finally sits down and writes some things on a sheet of paper - two to three sentences and then pitches me a verbal quote off the cuff of $3,000 to $5,000 (A 67% difference in price from the base). I said OK, can you email me a quote with the details of the work I want done and he says sure no problem. Weeks pass.. no quote from Wyatt, no phone call, no email from him. So I email Don on 7/21 and say look.. Your guy came here, took barely any notes, pitched me a verbal quote off the cuff and left promising me he'd email me a quote for the work I wanted done. Don ignores my email entirely.. Come 8/14 Don sends me an email telling me Rolling Rock is getting out of the yard maintenance business and focusing on design and installation (Despite the fact that I still have no quote from Wyatt or response from Don on the design and install I wanted back in July) - in his email he then proceeds to introduce me to EVO Landscapes and says they'll be taking over maintenance of my property. Here we are and it's 9/9 - No response still from Don, nobody from EVO Landscape has showed up and my yard looks like crap. I'm now stuck shopping around for a competent landscaper to take over the complete redesign and maintenance of my property. I would not under any circumstance recommend Rolling Rock Landscape to anyone looking for reliable service. And to Don if you're reading this: I gave you and your guys the benefit of the doubt and you left me completely hanging. So this review won't be removed or changed. You had every chance to email, call, or text me but you chose not to. read more

I have used this company previously and they did a good job. The guys were on time and they were good workers. I was pleased. I called them to do work at my new house. Had an appointment for the designer to come out next Monday. Unfortunately I received a call today saying "we are too busy to take on any new clients". If I still want them, I can call them back in March to schedule something. Really? I think that is ridiculous. We already had an appointment scheduled but they knew I had a small budget. Maybe why? Rolling Rock Landscape just did a beautiful BBQ area for us. We had been wanting to get rid of the grass in our backyard and put in a BBQ for some time, but I had a hard time finding a reliable landscape company that was licensed, bonded and insured. Finally, I came across Rolling Rock Landscape and gave them a call. Karen came out, looked at our space, and gave us her design ideas. She then emailed us a detailed proposal listing all of the estimated costs. We got a few other bids and then decided to go with Rolling Rock. That turned out to be a great decision! There are three primary reasons that I'm recommending Rolling Rock: First and foremost is the "wow factor" that all of our neighbors are continuously complimenting us on. Second was the time they spent iterating over the design of the project with me and my wife; attention to detail was awesome, culminating in a CAD diagram that made it very easy to visualize the outcome. My wife and I hired Jim and Rolling Rock Landscape off a recommendation from a neighbor. Jim took his time to listen to our goals for our front and back yard, understood our budget, created a number of designs, and helped problem-solve some key issues.
