Ordered to-go last week and was super bummed out. The fried rice was okay but could have been more flavorful. The chicken dumplings had zero flavor and were missing at least two of the ingredients listed on the menu. This is my favorite thai in Seattle, hands down. But I think my trick with thai food is I always make friends with the owners ASAP, then start asking for recommendations (seriously you idiots, they know their food better than YOU do). This is how this place won my heart. Their Kee Mao is wonderful, the yellow and green curries were awesome, the fresh rolls are FRESH. They made one non menu item for me once called Ohmo Chicken in bananna leaves with coconut milk.. PHENOMENAL!! Honestly I dont think Ive had 'mediocre' item off this menu ever. Rom Mai Tai is now my favorite Thai place in Capitol Hill. I'm a big fan of their roasted duck noodle soup and all of their appetizers. Their curry is tasty as well, and my girlfriend loves their Tom Ka Gai. Yesterday, I tried their special of the day: Supreme Hor Mok - a red curry/coconut milk dish with coconut meat and seafood served in a small coconut. Wow. That was awesome. I was a little bit dismayed that we were given an amount of brown rice that seemed disporportionate to the dish, but perhaps it was portion controlled. Although there was enough curry for leftovers, there wasn't enough rice for leftovers. No biggie, as it was enough for the meal itself and I was full with the amount they gave. If anything, the brown rice tasted great with the curries. Either way, I hope to see this on special again next time I'm here because I loved it. The prices are fair and the service is great. We ordered takeaway, and the food was delicious. The Tom Yum Goong was very spicy (just how I like it), and had lots of mushrooms inside. Our Pad See Iew was also made just right--perfect amount of noodle to chicken. The Mr said that the staff there was extra friendly and got loads of Thank You's as he left the door--that always helps! One thing to note if you're expecting delivery, is that there are minimum order purchases for areas outside of the actual hill. Hence, why we ended up picking up our food. read more

Made a stop by this newly re-modeled Thai restaurant on the northern end of Capitol Hill. Out of everything--the setting, the food, the service, etc. I'd have to say the most memorable thing here was the service. From the host who greeted us, to our server, and to other staff, we were welcomed well by the entire staff....maybe a little too much. Some of the staff were noticeably lingering in the background ready to pounce on empty water glasses, and empty plates. As far as the food, for an appetizer we had an order of satay fresh rolls. *Heart* Oh Rom Mai....how I love you so. How lucky I am to live one block away to the best Thai restaurant on the face of the planet. There is not much I can count on in this world, but I know for sure the minute I walk into Rom Mai, I will feel like a welcomed guest in someones home. This feeling is pretty intense, and if you are the type of person who likes to just be left alone, then go right on ahead to Siam across the street where the waitress will not ask how your day went and might even forget to refill your water. Alas this friendliness can be a double edged sword. For about six months after I broke up with my ex, they would continuously ask about him..."how is he doing??" Uggg how am I supposed to know?. But this is just a reflection of how much they care, so I forgive them. How could I not appreciate my special VIP status when they made me a special Thai desert for my birthday that they have to plan three days in advance to make?!?!? We went here on a whim Christmas day. After all the hubbub with the family, we wanted to go for a walk and noticed that it was open. We ordered spring rolls and the orange chicken to share, and Thai Iced Tea and Thai Iced Coffee for ourselves. The spring rolls were crisp, perfectly hot and savory. The orange chicken was glazed, unbreaded, tender and on a bed of crunchy rice noodles. It was a great texture combination. The broccoli was steamed and crisp. read more

I'm a pretty big Thai food fan. This place is on the way from my work back home, so sometimes I stop by to pick up takeout dinner. It's not my favorite Thai place, but it definitely does the job when I'm craving. They use delicious, meaty chunks of chicken in their chicken pad Thai, unlike some other places. Unfortunately, the dish veers toward bland unless you get a star or two (of spice) above what you might order somewhere else. The main letdown of Rom Mai is there crab delight. The weird, kitschy, Americanized Thai dish can be so satisfying, but theirs often feels like a fried sack of cream cheese and herbs, with hardly any crab/imitation crab meat to be seen. My main issue is that this place is more expensive, but not as tasty, as many of the other Thai places in the area. Unless it's the only convenient/open place, I'll probably opt for somewhere else. read more

I haven't had their food. But, what I'd like to address is the LUNACY of offering delivery, but ONLY FOR THOSE WITHIN 500 FT!!!!!!! I only live 1.7 miles from this restaurant (just the other side of S.U.). I called to place an order for delivery and the hostess on the phone appeared concerned after I gave her my address. She had to put me on hold and check, and then double-check. Then, she gets back to me to say that because I live SO FAR AWAY, there's a $35 minimum order. I usually spend $25-28 on thai, but $35 worth of food is more than I need. Dang! I grew up here and I'm still waiting for Seattle to offer big city delivery options. read more

I was so impressed by Rom Mai! I think this is my new go to Thai restaurant. Why? Because it has all the aspects that I look for, which is actually quite a challenging find for a Thai restaurant. Unlike some delicious Thai restaurants the atmosphere is clean, quiet, and intimate. The food was well seasoned and perfectly cooked and prepared. The service is fabulous. Serving sizes are generous with great prices. We ordered a red curry, pad see ewe and fresh rolls. The red curry could have had a little more veggies, but the flavor was great. The other two dishes were remarkable, and not too greasy. We had enough for left overs and for the first time ever the Thai leftovers were still good the next day. More fresh perhaps?? I had high hopes for this newly remodeled restaurant...but I have to agree with previous reviews that this place is a "meh". I had take-outs here the other night. We ordered the standards such as chicken pad thai, beef phad-see-eew (not sure on the spelling here), panang curry, and tom yum shrimp. All the dishes except for the tom yum soup were mediocre for Thai food. The panang curry was especially bland. The worst part was the tiny portions. I'm used to getting Thai take-outs where they fill up the box and you end up with left-overs because you're too stuffed to eat any more. The food here is totally fine but absolutely nothing special. The rice has been overcooked both times I've eaten here, and the meats are really stringy and kind of tough. On the other hand, the staff really is great. They're very friendly and funny and extremely attentive to your needs. My friend and I were craving Thai food so we came here since it's her favorite place in Cap Hill and I don't see why. The prices are a bit high and rice is extra. I guess this wouldn't bother me so much if more rice was served with the order, but it seemed so pitiful to serve a small soup bowl amount of rice in a medium rice container. My curry wasn't even that hot temperature wise and the beef was too chewy for my liking. Ro Mai Thai would have gotten 3 stars except for the fact that my friend and I were seated under the vent which was blowing cold air down on us. We asked our waitress if we could move to another table since we were cold and there were a number of empty tables and instead of a "sure no problem" she said that the whole restaurant was cold. But, umm, no other tables had air blowing directly onto us. We got placed at the table close to the bathroom and I wanted to say no because of its location, but the look on our server's face made me not want to say anything. Stellar Thai experience! This is the Thai place that we would make an excuse to drive to Seattle (from Portland) to eat at. After living in downtown Seattle for a couple years, this became our favorite restaurant in the city with it's great food, staff and reasonable prices. I found this place somewhat underwhelming. I have heard great reviews from friends about Rom Mai Thai so I decided to give it a shot. Their lunch menu has some pretty good deals and got the meal with soup, won tons, garlic chicken, tofu pad Thai, and rice. The meal did fill me up but I feel that I've had better. The hot and sour soup was a little too sour at first but then I think my taste buds got accustomed to the "sourness". The won ton was kind of flavorless but that was saved by the sweet chili dipping sauce. As for the garlic chicken and pad thai, they were both pretty decent and I really liked that the dishes were both very spicey. I'll most likely check it out again when I'm in the area. read more

Absolute best Thai food on the Hill. Come to think of it, the best I've had in Seattle. If you've ever been disappointed by bland, lackluster Thai joints dishing out peanut-butter flecked, ketchup-ed pad thai, Rom Mai Thai will stun you. The pad kee mao is the knockout dish. It's so good, I can't keep myself from ordering it every time. The fat, tender, perfectly chewy noodles sop up just enough of the flavor-packed sauce. The seasonal pumpkin curry is also phenomenal, with fat, perfectly cooked chunks of fresh pumpkin and a curry so tasty, you'll lap it up straight out of the bowl. And Rom Mai also manages to elevate humble fried rice into something else entirely. And the service. You've never had a waiter -- or two or three or six -- attend to you that's as friendly, guaranteed. The entire staff greets you when you walk in, and half of them quickly usher you to a table. And equally warm are the goodbyes once you're headed out the door. It's almost a twinge too much after your water glass has been splashed off ten or more times throughout the meal, but they're so gosh-darn cute about it it's hard to complain. Last word of advice: Be sure to ask for the special condiment tray, filled with a fantastically fiery array of spices. The popular Asian-restaurant star system is generally whack, so take the heat level into your own hands. My personal favorite is the fish sauce spiked with minced Thai chiles (the saltiness is fantastic spooned over everything, but it'll burn your mouth off -- ask for a few less stars to compensate). read more

While looking for a Thai place that delivers in Capitol Hill, we stumbled upon Rom Mai. Both the woman who took my order and the man who delivered the food were very friendly. It took about 45 minutes for the food to get here, which was annoying because we were hungry, but that was the amount of time they told us, so at least they're accurate! The food was awesome. We started with tofu fresh rolls, which I loved - after previously thinking I didn't like any such thing. For the actual entree, we had pad thai with tofu, which came in a pretty large serving (I have leftovers for tomorrow!) and was delicous (and I'd asked for mine to have no spiciness, and it wasn't spicy at all, so I was a very happy girl), and I had a side of rice as well. Most of their food came in little boxes that I think are environmentally friendly (or at least labelled as such) and the rice came in an adorable little takeout box. Our total came to about $25, which kind of surprised me at first, but I guess for an appetizer, an entree, and a side of rice, it's not that expensive. I will definitely hit up Rom Mai again, and I may even go so far as to stop being lazy and actually go to their restaurant next time! read more

Yumm, if you want a great Thai dinner, this is the place to go. The service was super quick and nice, the portions were generous, and the ambiance was nice. We switched it up and tried two new dishes that we normally don't order at Thai restaurants. We tried this delicious coconut milk soup with chicken and chilis (and other things I can't remember right now...), and a super tasty dish of noodles (might have been Mee Ga Noodle?). Thai food for dummies came to mind when I thought of this place. I live around the area... Came here in my younger days and thought the world of this place. That was before my taste buds evolved and I realized how truly shitty this Rom Mai Thai was. I came here a few days ago and ordered traditional Pad Thai and Beef Noodle Soup. The Pad Thai was SUPER dry and bland. It was like "clumps" of broken up noodles, not even a whole lime could fix. Ever tasted Pad Thai from a fast food place called "Thai Go?"... yeah it tasted like that at night... when the restaurant was getting ready to close. Not edible. The Beef Noodle Soup which I distinctly remember being flavorful and comforting was so Salty it took about 5 glasses of water to relieve my tongue. The waitstaff was super friendly and awesome, except the girl at the cashier counter. She must have been having a bad day or something, she wasn't friendly at all. For the average person I suppose this average restaurant will do. But if you want to enjoy your food, I wouldn't recommend coming to this place. You're better off buying packaged Thai food from QFC. read more

Had a rather disappointing experience on my first visit to Rom Mai Thai today. But rather than starting off with the negative, let's start with the positive! The restaurant is very clean and located in a great neighborhood. Upon walking into Rom Mai Thai you see colorful decor with high windows. The place is air conditioned and pretty authentic. The food is ok and portions are very generous also. I had enough left over after lunch for a snack later. Calling in is pretty convenient and the ticket times are fast also. Now, let me start by saying that there are many ways to deal with a miscommunication. Insulting your customer by undermining their intelligence with a condescending attitude is one way you shouldn't go about doing business. Thinking that you could get extra prawns in the pad thai, (as the menu says) I asked if I could go with that option. When I asked, the waitress started talking very slowly and gave me a face that basically said, "Are you dumb? Let me explain what the menu actually says." Apparently its Chicken OR beef OR prawns. In other words you choose one type of meat only. Hey she could have simply told me that without the attitude. Pretty disappointing and I will not be returning to Rom Mai Thai. read more

I don't eat at Rom Mai Thai much. It's not that the place isn't good; it's just that I tend to prefer Siam on Broadway, right across the street. Seattle has an embarrassment of top-notch Thai restaurants. What would be a five-star place in most other cities is considered average here. The food is typical, for Seattle, which is to say quite good: curries are rich and pungent, larb explodes in your mouth with flavors of lime and chilis and fish sauce, and the fresh rolls are pleasantly crisp. Prices are typical too, with entrees hovering around eight or nine dollars, with prices a touch higher for seafood. The decor is pleasant and brighter than most other Thai places in the neighborhood, with green and gold prominent. Service is both quick and friendly. In any other city, Rom Mai Thai might be a standout. In Seattle, it's representative of an excellent "average" place. read more

I have been thinking about picking a favorite Thai place for the four years I've been in Seattle and tonight I have chosen. And I swear it's not because I just stuffed myself full of mango sticky rice, though that sure helped. The spring rolls are amazing. Not dripping in oil but crisp, light and flavorful. My favorite is Tom Kah Gai. It's everything soup should be and more. Everything I've had here has been good... and it's just up the street, so my visits are not infrequent. Here's the thing, though. The staff is suffocatingly nice. I think it's sincere and it's mostly appreciated, but by the fourth time being asked how my food is I get a little irritated. The first time I've ever eaten here was about 3 years ago. My girlfriend and I had our first dinner date here and we were impressed then, always wanting to come back on a special night. To our surprise, after the place has been renovated, we found that a lot has changed after last night (10-05-09). Their servings have skimped--all over. We ordered springs rolls for appetizer, two of them to be exact, and what did we get? We got one spring roll cut in half and voila. Their oyster beef, which took them 20 extra minutes after our main dishes arrived, did not taste even mediocre. I did manage to eat everything though, I mean, I was hungry, and yes, the serving size were minimal. I'm a little guy with a medium appetite, and if you're a big guy with a big appetite, do not go here. The best thing I could say about this restaurant is that their service is very friendly, watching your every move, watching your glass--our water was never empty. The servers were top grade. My wife and I ate here last week, hmmmm, something isn't right. Service was off, food portions were ultra small from previous visits, poorly prepared. Garlic chicken way too tough to chew, Ugg. What went wrong? I have been a devoted Rom Mai Thai patron for the four years I've lived on Capitol Hill. Tonight I placed an order for pick up, which I called back to cancel about 30 seconds later. Their response was "oh no, you can't, we already made it. If you cancel, we lose money." I explained that that was why I called within 30 seconds of ordering. Then, he told me never to call again!!! In my world, the customer is always right, especially if they've spent hundred, possibly thousands of dollars at your restaurant. Ok I have been coming to this place for years and I have never been dissatisfied. All of these new imports to The Hill talk about oh so and so prevents this from being 4 star. You are a plague and we all hate you. The food here is and has always been awesome. The orange chicken is an amazing take on traditional orange chicken. I don't get what the fuss is all about. Yeah, the place was pleasant enough, and service was excellent, but the food was nothing to write home about. Fresh rolls - Awesome that they offer a small portion for $2.95 and a large for $4.95. At other places, I rarely end up ordering these because I end up paying $7 for more than I need. But on the downside, there were barely any shrimp pieces in there, just mostly noodle. Seafood salad - My dining companion ordered this one... it's not something I'd usually get. Seafood wasn't bad, and the dressing was a nice combination of flavors (like mint, lime, etc.). But when I pay $11 for a salad, I'd like to see something nicer than iceberg lettuce. Maybe this is the norm for Thai salads? I wouldn't know. Pad thai - Really unimpressive. We were trying to decide between tofu and chicken, and the waitress said she could put both in. Well, she ended up giving us chicken and prawns and charging $2 extra for the prawns. Thanks, I guess. Noodles were too saucy and ketchupy. Two stars should have a little spice, but these noodles tasted like zero stars. Maybe other dishes are better, and if I lived nearby, I'd give it a second shot, but that's not the case. So, Rom Mai Thai has this special. I can't remember what it's called but it's basically all of the foods you could ever want to eat (peppers, eggs, coconut, prawns) and they bring it to you INSIDE OF A COCONUT! They will even deliver this miracle of food science to your door, which is especially welcome on a rainy weeknight when you've had it up to wherever with cooking and grocery stores and leaving the house. You can just sit around watching episodes of whatever weird show you're secretly addicted to on Netflix and in around 45 minutes - there it is. Coconut magic. We've ordered the green beans (great), red curry (pretty good), and a few other dishes from here over the years. Since I discovered the coconut, I order it every time since I'm terrified they'll take it off the menu and replace it with some new, lesser "special" thing. Get some rice, dump it in the coconut, eat it all even though it's almost too much food for one person. If you go into the restaurant, you will be happy because everyone who works here is totally sweet and their fish are named after Spongebob characters and they will talk to you about whatever's on your mind. If you get delivery, the food will arrive hot and you can wear a creepy pair of sweats if that's what you're into. I still love Jamjuree the most of all our Thai spots on the hill, but RMT is a close second. Seriously, order the coconut. read more
