    Bacon & Blue Burger

So, Romans is a nice homegrown spot in Downtown Asheville. I decided to order the blue cheese bacon burger and it did not disappoint! The service was nice and chill...definitely a hippy vibe. I ordered a side of fruit to take home with me and a coke. I would give Romans another try for sure.

On-line ordering was easy. The sandwiches are made with high quality ingredients but are on the pricier side given the portion size, which isn't huge. The side salads that come with the sandwiches were quite small in portion. The pasta salad was vinegar based tasting and was just ok. The potato was quite good. The fruit salad was fresh and included clementine, pineapple, and strawberry. The chicken salad is served hot and was the best of the three we ordered - Italian, chicken salad, and turkey cranberry pesto.

Had an impossible burger from here today and it was a total delight. Got it to go and the whole order was packed with care. The burger was hot and delicious and well seasoned. Highly recommend. The bun was not whole wheat but was fluffy. Great stuff on it too- the whole PLOT felt quality. Added cheddar and yum. The side of fruit was fresh and good but tiny. Like really tiny. Like two strawberries and two orange slices tiny.

1/29/2020- Wow small Little place with a big punch very nice menu. I got a bacon Swiss cheeseburger. The burgers shoes sorry I ate too fast came with a nice cold sore no vinegar that I can taste they don't have french fries no fryer the burger came with a pickle. Nicest thing is the packaging it's not Styrofoam or plastic it's cardboard , nice touch There's about 7-8 tables and it was busy.

The overall experience was just meh, but the BBQ burger was spot on. I don't even have a picture because we ate it so fast. The Italian was made Panini style and because the bread was thin and there was tomato and dressing it causes the meat to leave the bread when you bite. The pasta salad was okay, but bland. Now, I don't use cream in my white chicken chili and I'm not sure what other people do, but I didn't enjoy it at this place because of the amount of cream. The bottled soda was delish.

Oh how I love Roman's, but hate the the prices. I ordered a large salad this week, the key word is large! For the large salad and a drink it cost me a cool $24, which seems insane even for Asheville. The worst part is that my salad was shoved and stuffed into a half size to go box pictured here. If you are going to charge $20 bucks for a large salad it should come in a regular size "large" go box like all normal restaurants have.

Excellent Veggie burger that stands out from other veggie burgers. This one is clearly homemade with actual black beans and lentils. The burger is also loaded with red onions, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and a special sauce. Fantastic sandwich even though it was on the pricey side. The potato and pasta salads were also very refreshing and fresh. I also recommend the chicken salad sandwich which includes sundried tomatoes that add a beautiful flavor to the sandwich.

Chicken Salad was an amazing choice - one of the best I have ever had.

I stopped in my first day and got the LT sandwich, which was amazing, but I ended up spending almost as much time looking around the store as I did eating. They have everything from local mustards and honey to tinned fish, seasonings, and a whole section from a local creamery with ice cream, yogurt, smoothies, etc. Everything seems thoughtfully picked out and locally sourced when possible, without having the ridiculous prices you sometimes expect from a place like this. The staff was also amazing--genuinely friendly, helpful, and happy to talk about the food and everything they carry. I liked the place enough that, despite having an entire city of restaurants I'd never tried before, I came back the very next day. This time I got the grinder, which ended up being my favorite, along with the roast beef, which was also delicious. Between the sandwiches, the people, and the frankly ridiculous amount of good shit packed into the store, everything about this place was great. There are plenty of places I didn't get a chance to try while I was in Asheville, but I have absolutely no regrets using two lunches on this one. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town. Sadly, they weren't busy at all, but we really liked the "funky" vibe and the large covered outdoor seating area they offered. We ordered drinks and food at the bar and then grabbed a high top outside. Since I like cucumber water, I ordered the Coolcumber - a golden ale brewed with cucumber, juniper, & basil. It was delicious and refreshing. For dinner, we ordered the Kale Caesar Salad and Mortadella Pizza (formerly the Bologna Pizza...or vice versa). Both the salad and pizza were generously portioned and perfect for two of us to share. Let's start with the salad. O.M.G. It is one of the best kale salads -- if not THE best kale salad -- I've ever had. They took care to massage the leaves with the dressing to make them very tender, then it was topped with a mound of shredded Parmesan cheese. So incredibly tasty. If you've ever turned your nose up at kale, this will change your mind. Next up was the Mortadella/Bologna pizza. It was wood-fired to char the crust and then covered in sauce, mozzarella, mortadella, stracciatella, and pistachio pesto. Having recently been to Italy, these were all ingredients I was still craving. It was delicious. The food was crave-worthy. The drink menu is extensive. The staff was all really friendly and welcoming. And the atmosphere was awesomely funky. I'd definitely return.

The nachos were SO good! They were loaded, full of flavor, and honestly one of my favorite parts of the meal. We also got the BBQ spread so we could try a little bit of everything. The brisket, smoked wings, and pulled pork were all delicious. The meat was definitely the highlight! The collards were probably the best I've ever had at a restaurant. I could've easily eaten a whole bowl of them and been perfectly happy! The baked beans had a pretty strong beer flavor, so those weren't really my thing. The potato salad could've used a little more seasoning too, but overall, there was plenty of food and everything had that comforting, casual down-home feel.
