Covid Precautions: Super safe! I was just here yesterday (November 7, 2020) and Ron had the huge bay windows open for air circulation, wore a mask the whole time, and was the only stylist working in the entire studio space. I can definitely say that this is as safe as a salon gets in these times. Service Review: I have been coming to Ron for about 2 years now and can unequivocally say that he is the best hairstylist I have ever had. He frames hairstyles in a way that has movement, body, and takes into account a persons features (ie: face shape and jawline) He has done both short and medium length styles for me and both have gotten me more compliments than any other ones I have ever had. I have very fine hair, so I needed someone that knew how to treat my hair properly. I've never found anyone in the that could style AND color my baby-fine-hair the way I like. Sure, I would fine a good stylist but NEVER a colorist. I found Ron through Yelp, using 'fine hair' as a search, under Beauty & Spas. It took me a while to filter through all the hits but when I came across Ron's reviews, I knew I had a winner. His website made it easy to make an appointment. I just clicked a few buttons, found a time and scheduled my appointment. I received a confirmation email and even received my receipt for services via email, so easy! Ron's studio is located right next to the San Francisco Center so it was easy to find him and parking was very convenient. I can be a little ditzy sometimes, so when I found the building it took me a second to figure out that I needed to use the keypad in order to get buzzed in. Don't expect him to answer, just pull the door open when you hear the buzzer. Once inside the building, I headed straight back to the elevator and up to the 5th floor. The studio is quaint, very chic, clean and has a nice view of the area. Ron is SUPER friendly, easy to talk to, attentive, listened to what I wanted and gave me sound suggestions for my cut/color. I can't remember the technique he used to color my hair, but I LOVE IT! I've had horrible experiences getting my hair colored. Most of the time, I lose chunks of hair and my scalp usually feels like it's on fire. =( I was nervous about the color treatment but as Ron started to apply the color and use plastic wrap to cover it, I felt at ease, like..."huh, this is new, maybe I won't lose my hair." and I didn't. It was great! I love my cut and the low-lights that Ron put in. My hair feels better and looks great! I don't get my hair professionally cut/colored...anything, but as long as Ron is in the SF Bay Area, I will always go to him! I sought out Ron because I was looking for a stylist who could help me find a hair style that works for me. I've never been super aware of what hair styles look best for me, and have had a feeling that my previous hair cutters didn't know either. It's all true. Thank goodness for Yelp! I wanted to add to the raves for this studio. Ron is an artist. He made my straight, super fine hair look gorgeous. He knows how to do layers very well so they give my hair movement and body. Best of all, he really listened to what I wanted and gave it to me with his own flair. He is also a total sweetheart, and very welcoming and chatty. I'm the type of person who usually hunts around for a deal. But I got tired of subpar haircuts, and decided it was worth an investment. I wanted someone who could look at my hair and face shape, and give recommendations as well as factor in my preferences. He was worth every penny! I think it's the best cut I've ever had, it looks like something off a cover shoot. And he showed me some great styling techniques. I've been hesistant to cut it since my last hair disaster (see other yelp review). One day a client of mine took out her hair tie and let down her hair and immediately fell in love with her layers. She referred me to the master and now I'm hooked. Made an appt. and was greeted by Ron himself. I didn't have to wait long, maybe 10 minutes until it was my turn on the chair. I've searched for two years looking for a hair stylist in San Francisco. A haircut from Ron Pernell is slice of heaven where you are treated like a star at each visit. I was traveling to New York for haircuts which became a bit inconvenient until an Editor friend recommended Ron. This review is SO LONG overdue. Ron has been doing my hair for 25 years. I can't believe I'm that old! He's been doing cut, color, blow outs, make up, styling, anything and everything. I've gone from a short bob with bangs to very long wavy hair to my thighs. He is fun and funny and gregarious with an amazing sense of style and incredible aesthetic. He travels the world and is a stylist for top fashion models and shows but he's incredibly down to earth and grounded and brings an integrity to his work that is unprecedented. Ummmmm...I don't think it is possible to express how much I love the way Paul styles and colors my hair. He is a master!!! I have actually been going to Paul for a few years now, and just can not imagine going anywhere else. Everytime I leave I notice people staring at my hair on the street and get tons of compliments from all of my friends. I am a brunette, long, long hair, and straight as you can get. Paul always adds the best layers, my side swept bangs are sexy as hell, and the color... well it's amazing. All I can say is that I LOVE Ron and what he does with hair. He's fantastic to talk to and he always knows the right thing to do. I have straight, wash-and-go flat hair and for some reason over the years everyone who has touched my hair thinks it doesn't require skill because it's just "straight". I am fortunate enough to have very thick. healthy, full, long and wavy hair. I never need more than a trim to keep it healthy and clean it up. More often than not, I find myself struggling with stylists who don't listen to what I am asking for and salivate over having a full head of hair that they can chop to bits, highlight and dye. One day a few weeks ago I had a "hair breakdown," realizing that the stuff on top of my head was much closer to the straw that horses eat than the silk shown in shampoo commercials. I made a decision that I would pay whatever price was asked if only a hair whisperer could make me feel pretty again. After searching through the salons Yelpers love, I called Ron Pernell. He gave me an appointment after work the very next day after I explained how much I needed his help! To my surprise, it was Ron himself doing my hair after I buzzed up to the cute and relaxing little space. He listened and understood as I explained all my hair desires. I could tell from when he first touched my hair he knew what he was doing. However, the way that it dried that appointment it didn't look beautiful like I was hoping. I thought maybe I had been duped into giving up more length without getting a better style. I was disappointed and Yelpers, as embarassing as it is to admit, I did not leave any tip. I thought, a $95 haircut should make me feel great! After a week or two as my hair has adjusted to the new shape it now looks perfect! It is so much healthier looking and feeling and it will grow out beautifully. I am not proud that I doubted Ron, he really knows hair, even my sad kind! I know have a style I don't spend any time on, that looks like I did, just like I've always wanted :). Go to Ron (even on short notice)! I've been coming here to see Enrique Gilardo every 3 months since July 2010. Enrique has MAJOR talent in the haircutting department. I've referred many friends to see him. He calls me his walking billboard:) His cuts grow out very nicely, so you will not likely need to visit every month for a trim. In-betwen bang trims are complimentary, but I do recommend tipping him as deserved:) Quick note: Enrique moved to LA, but will be taking appointments here every third week of the month. Phew!!! Today I had a wonderful experience at Ron Pernell Hair Studio! I have very fine ash/dishwater blond hair that can look great but can also look like a colossal train wreck when my roots grow in. Ron is a perfect blend of artist and doctor. He listened to my hair history, asked questions, and felt my hair to prescribe the best solution for me. I was so happy that he understood what I was looking for in the way of color. He actually educated me about my hair and translated my ramblings into what I've wanted for so long. Previous colorists wanted to make my hair yellowish or strawberry blond and that just doesn't look right with my complexion. He achieved exactly what I wanted but even better. B e t t e r! Ron suggested layering highlights and lowlights to blend my roots-- and he was *so* on the money. I was a bit hesitant to do highlights because of a previous (and expensive) round of highlights that literally turned my hair to goo, (in Chicago approx.1998) and I've been too afraid to try highlights since. I turned to single process on my roots to lighten but ultimately my hair started looking non-dimensional and drab. Once the color was finished and he started blow drying, I watched carefully to see if any hairs were breaking or flying away. None. He must have read my mind because he then showed me the brush he was using and said, "See? No hairs" I literally squealed with joy! My hair looks full, happy and healthy- like it "should" look. And he achieved the dimensional light ash blond color I've been longing for. I have super straight baby-fine hair that is really difficult to cut and style properly. I have lived all over the world and Ron is one of the best hairdressers I have used. Not only is he great with color and cut, he is extremely friendly and charming and he just makes each visit a delight. I have been going to Ron for more than a year and "found" him when a former colleague showed up at work with an incredible hair cut. I watched her for several weeks to see if she could manage it as well herself and when she did I got Ron's information. I have never been disappointed. My daughter and my ex-admin are also going to him in San Francisco and my son is going to him in Los Angeles where he works at a studio every other week for a few days. Based on the positive reviews, I was excited that Ron was able to fit me in due to a last-minute cancellation. Ron did an amazing job! My very thick, wavy/curly hair that always threatens to frizz came out looking beautiful and has personality again.
