I'm a longtime car aficionado. I've worked on cars since I was 10 and have done everything from transmissions to engine overhauls and everything in between. I've also been around every kind of automotive repair place imaginable. The extent to which some will rip you off is unimaginable. However surprisingly, I cannot say enough good (great) about Ronin Autowerks in Fullerton. I took my Mini Cooper there for the first time based on recommendations from other Mini owners on an on-line Mini forum. It needed a major repair. The dealer had quoted me into the $2000's and I was ready for more. Matt (and Josh) immediately identified the problem, fixed the car in the time they said, and came back with a final price that was UNDER (yes, I said "under") the original quote! They even told me not to do a service on a part that they found was actually in good shape. The dealer would have had me fix that and much more! In the end, Ronin saved me $1200 (maybe more) over the dealer! Seriously, when you find a reputable mechanic, use them. These guys are top-notch. They are that rarest asset of: an honest mechanic. After all the horrendous experiences I've had at the hands of auto repair places, I'm still elated at finding this place. The staff is great. Matt at Ronin has been taking care of my 330i giving it all the attention it needs. He is really knowledgeable about bmws and is always willing to accommodate your schedule, he'll even wait till you get off work! And while you are there, you should check out his m6 or go to the skatepark next door! Just a quick list of work he has done, level2 service, changed the coil, changed all 4 brakes, replaced the radiator, countless oil changes, etc. I think this would have cost a ton of money at the BMW st-ealership. So this is my 2nd visit to Ronin to bring in my Mini Cooper S. The service I received leads me to write this review, because it's well deserved. Matt, the owner, gives the most upfront, friendly, and honest service. He is upfront because he gets straight to the point and explains everything completely. What you get quoted on is what you get. I saved a couple hundred dollars for bushings, tires, and an alighnment, versus what I was quoted from competitors. I am absolute that what I get quoted on elsewhere is not the final price. Plus, the quality of his craftsmanship is expertise. He is very efficient and also works around your time. He will go above and beyond to make sure you are getting the most savings. I was frustrated with Long Beach BMW giving me the runaround on my 2011 328i that I had purchased from them last November. So many codes popping up and not a single straightforward answer. Well let's start from the first time coming here with my M5. First I asked for my rod bearing to be replaced with the Vano line, as most shops will replace at the same time. Their mechanic forgot to install it once I asked for my old parts. They did say if the vano line goes bad within the warranty period they would do the repair at no charge only for parts. Second, I brought my car for an engine light, which they stated was catalytic converter was bad. $6000+to repair. I also told them that the idle would fluctuate, the lady at the counter stated that the problem was a broken wire in the battery location. And that this would cure the problem. Didn't cure the problem, and they charged $300 to resplice a new wire which would take them 5 minutes to perform. But they did add more diff fluid to the diff, as they said but I could not confirm if they really did as they have lied before. I would not recommend this shop. read more

Matt and his crew's reputation is very well deserved. Their shop resembles a small OEM factory floor, with vintage cars in various stages of restoration. I had my girlfriend's 1976 2002 expertly rebuilt there about a year ago - and from that experience came back for routine maintenance on my 2000 M Coupe. With Nick's expressive help, they got an immediate handle on what the car really needed. They also detected a few troublesome leaks and recommended prudent fixes. I was perpetually updated with convenient texts and phone calls. Enrique their technician worked extra on a Saturday to deliver the car that morning. I previously found "the wandering samurai who has no master" by searching the internet and checking with other BMW enthusiasts. From what I can see, there really is nothing these guys don't know, whether its an early stock 1970's model or today's modified beast. I was in a pinch, having had previous work done at a mechanic out of the area, and apparently the rattling noise I heard from inside the vehicle was the suspension block losing it's bolts, tying it into the frame (I hadn't reviewed that place yet, but I think I should simply be honest after this most recent situation). This particular situation could have caused severe damage to the frame, if not hurt myself or someone else very seriously due to the negligence. I called two other places, one had a tech that was out for the day, and the other (I drove there before I called) didn't even get up out of his seat to see what I was talking about, appeared disinterested, almost as if the car wasn't there (will leave first impression review there as well). I drove to Ronin and described the clanking noise and how it has gradually become louder and louder and they took my car right in, and advised me of what was happening about 20 minutes later. He advised that I could pay them to bolt it back down or talk yo whomever perfomed the most recent work (I advised I had an air suspension put on recently, same wheel) .. so he bolted it down and had me out of there, all in about an hour. In addition he gave me a quote for a coolant leak, which was much better than the other two quotes I received as the process wasn't as invasive and would take about 10, 12 hours instead of 2, 3 days. Overall I felt comfortable with the response and action today in light of what I experienced at one shop where repairs were done and another that I showed up at who didn't seem interested in looking at the vehicle ... read more

Been coming here ever since I picked up my X5. Got turned off by the dealer when I went in for an oil change and they tried to charge another customer and I a fee to reset the service oil light. No tricks like that here, very honest and open to answering questions that you might have about your vehicle. The mechanics show you what they are replacing and why/how it may have failed. The shop is very clean and tidy which to me is a great sign of being organized. read more

I cannot vouch for the quality of their service. I called to schedule an appointment to have my car looked at on Friday last week. I gave a good deal of information to the person who answered the phone, and let them know that I'd be bringing the car in at 9AM on Friday. That morning I drive up to Fullerton, which is 1/2 an hour out of my way, to drop the car off. I get into the parking lot only to find out that they are closed for the day because they are having their lot repaved. Information I am sure they were aware of when I called. I received no phone call letting me know this was the case, and i wasted over 2 hours of my time having to find another place to take me car to. I don't give negative reviews on this site very often and this shop seems to have other good reviews provided you can actually get them to look at your vehicle. They lost a long term customer by not making a phone call. read more

Matt at Ronin is the best. I don't entrust my car with too many mechanics and shops. Matt has solid BMW and car expertise as well as a friendly and honest nature. The guy is awesome. He uses original BMW equipment and fluids or sometimes better stuff (Elf oil). He's a perfectionist who will get the job done right. Gotta love it... Matt's done everything from a routine oil change on my 330ci to moonroof shade fixes. Each time, he does a great job and charges a fair amount. I don't know about you, but I really value someone who's skilled and trustworthy. If you do too, Matt and Josh are for you. Update: June, 2014 My car isn't driven a lot, but I do take it to Ronin whenever it needs anything. They are working on belts/tensioners right now, along with fixing a sticky door lock actuator. This is a pesky problem that plagues a lot of the older 3 series, apparently. Kim is now there to help make things run smoothly. They're a good team of honest, hardworking and really skilled pros. I'm getting my car back today or tomorrow, and I bet it will be great. Certainly not cheap, but definitely fair and good prices for BMW maintenance and repair. I am a fan. read more

I just passed 50,000 miles on my 328i a few weeks ago and reached the end of my BMW maintenance plan. I had previously taken my car to be serviced at Crevier BMW, where the service was great, but I needed a person that I could trust after my warranty ran out. I've been on e46 fanatics and a variety of other message boards and only have read great things, I'm so happy to have met Matt and his team. I like the no nonsense approach and the fact that Matt talks to you like a real person and gets to know your car and what your needs really are. I used to have a Z4 that made a creaking noise whenever I drove over a speed bump or something similar. Brought it here to check and was quoted for new struts and something else. So, I brought it in to fix. After the job is done, I received a bill for twice the cost I was quoted. I was like, what's going on? After talking to the owner, he said it's totally obvious the quote was for a single front wheel not both. I asked how is a non-car repair person supposed to know how to itemize the cost for a repair he quoted? Insult to injury, the noise is still there after the repair. And, he said, he had to swap out more parts to cure the problem which would cost close to $2k. Needless to say I never came back. And, I took my car to Solely Bimmer. Guess what? They solved the creaking noise for free. All that needed to be done was to re-torque a front stress bar. Solely Bimmer took the time to diagnosis the problem and not just throw parts at it like Ronin does. Anyways, this was quite a few years but was reminded of it when I just received an email from Ronin to go like them on facebook. edit after ronin's reply: Ronin seem to imply that I never expressed my concern to them after my car was not repaired to satisfaction. That certainly wasn't the case. Right after my car was repaired, I complained about the billing and asked to show me whether the noise issue is fixed. Not only was the noise issue not fixed or addressed after my complaint but the owner pushed the front wheel from side to side and warned me of a different issue that it was too loose and needed to repair this.. The owner guy then added more things to the "need to fix" list after the fact that he just finished repairing my car. So, not only was my complaint not addressed, the warranty not honored, he only offered throw more parts at the noise that Solely Bimmer not only fixed for free but also told me my wheels were not loose at all. read more

WOW!!! I needed my brakes done on my car sooooOOo bad, and I found Matt's shop here on YELP! They did not disappoint! They were able to get my car in, brakes done, and a few other miscellaneous problems done that same day. The best service I have ever encountered from and auto shop. How often is it that an auto repair facility gets unanimous five star ratings from all reviewers? I would guess not often. I first took my Mini Cooper here a year ago for an "Inspection 2", aka major service in BMW/Mini parlance. Not only was the work done first class with all OEM parts, but the price of the service was incredibly reasonable compared to dealer rates...or even other BMW specialists. I just brought the car this week for rear brakes, and same deal. Both times, the staff were incredibly courteous and honest and even offered to drive me to and from the train station. And I have peace of mind knowing that this shop has built a solid reputation that's reflected not only here on Yelp, but also on numerous BMW and Mini web forums. Ronin is the first car shop that I have ever given my loyalty. Not only do they have great prices on your typical oil changes and Inspection I/II, but they are also quick and effective in diagnosing other issues. I am not a "car person" and my description of the symptoms probably does not help much (or at all). So, I'm even more appreciative that they can figure out the root causes and complete the repairs same-day. They are always honest about what needs to be fixed now and what can wait to be fixed later. I opened an account for yelp JUST to review these dudes. They're amazing. They know their stuff! They make it look easy lol. They aren't your typical repair place. No bells and whistles in the office means they take their business seriously. They do cars, not coffee. I've taken my car there for everything from oil changes all the way to pumps, clutches, and power steering pumps. The results are what keep me coming back. I give them some crazy problems with my car and they take care of it precisely and efficiently. I now refuse to take my BMW anywhere else. Oh, and like everyone else says, Matt is cool. read more

I have a 2014 MINI Countryman. I tried to get a estimate from another local shop and the owner totally blew me off and told me come back in a week, he was too busy. I messaged Ronin Autowerks and got a reply the next day from Randy. I took my car in for a timing chain tensioner/guides as preventative maintenance. I talked to Randy and he explained my year doesn't have the same problems as the older MINI's and I dont need it replaced.I still got a oil change since I was there, but who does that? A honest shop that has earned my business, that's who. I will need work in the future and this will be my go to shop. Its rare to find a honest shop that doesn't try to upsell and GIVES recommendations on needed repairs. I don't usually sign up for this type of sights to review anything. But after getting my car checked by Josh and seeing how knowledgeable and sincere he was, I had to sign up and give them a review. I paid a visit to Ronin Autowerks to get my pre-owned ///M3 that had 45k miles a full car inspection that I recently purchase 2 weeks ago. I was relieved and elated that my car checked out good and according to Josh he couldn't recommend anything at the moment for any maintenance requirements that needed urgent attention. In all honesty, I did this full car inspection to give me a peace of mind. I bought this ///M3 at a local Carmax store and I wanted to double check if Carmax did their 125 pt. inspection as advertised. I wanted to find out sooner than later if there were any issues so I can take it back and have Carmax fix anything that needed urgent attention. Carmax gives you a 30 day warranty on parts and labor. I am very meticulous when it comes to my cars. Josh even contacted a local "stealership" to get a vehicle maintenance history and pointed out to me what was done by the previous owner. That was awesome for him doing that. I believe he went beyond my expectations. He also took the time to explain to me about certain error codes that came up during the check and assured me that it was either an old error code that was stored in the system that has already been taken care of. From my personal observation, they are upfront and honest. Eventhough, I didn't get to meet Matt Rose-the owner, eventually, it will happen sooner or later. They will have a loyal customer in me. I will be bringing in my other BMW for maintenance pretty soon and will continue to bring my cars for any related maintenance work here. Althought, they are little further away than my current BMW independent shop here in Brea I will be going there for all my service from now on. I found Ronin previously while doing a "Google" search and reading reviews on Yelp, so I decided to give them a try. I am glad I did. Initially, I had taken my 328i into another shop across town. The other guy couldn't figure it out. He thought I needed a new ECU, but he said he wasn't qualified to install / program one. I took the car into Ronin for a second opinion. These guys solved the problem in about 5 minutes. Turns out, there was nothing wrong with my ECU; my battery was just installed incorrectly (my bad). I am so sad. I wanted to love this place but I think we had a bad experience. We inherited a 1987 BMW and took it here for a safety check and to address a few concerns. We said we were not in a hurry. Long story short... we got an oil change and it took 3 weeks. They never addressed our original concerns. I think they confused our car with another. They called us at one point to give us an update... but they had the wrong vehicle. It was a waste of our time and money. We really wanted to make sure it was safe for our 16 year old daughters first car and now need to find another shop to inspect it before we let her drive it. I have a newer BMW as well, and will most likely find another mechanic to handle both. read more

Had an overheating problem on my BMW 335i (2011) called this morning and they did the complete work in a day. I have no idea what the dealer would charge but this repair was reasonable for the time it would have taken. Staff was very helpful, receptionist even knew her stuff. I would recommend them to anyone. Note you can tell that they have good business as all the cars they are working on are also European or older classics. read more

I called Ronin to schedule a last minute PPI inspection on a 135i that my wife was looking to buy. I talked to Matt who spent over 10 minutes on the phone with me walking me through the process and explaining what the inspecrion entailed. Even though he was not available to perform the PPI on the day we needed to get it done he still took his time to give me the best possible advice on this particular car.
