We've loved Ron's Roost for many years and recently my husband and I found ourselves looking for a "homecooked" takeout option to send to friends who's home had flooded. With short notice we weren't able to make a homecooked meal for them ourselves, so we sent Ron's, fried chicken, mash potatoes, green beans and rolls, via DoorDash! It took no time to order on-line and had it sent right to our friends front door. Our friends & their kids raved about it so much that we ordered it for ourselves the next night. I hadn't had their fried chicken or hot slaw for quite some time. I had forgotten how delicious they both are. I'll definitely order again. I would like the mashed potatoes to be real. They definitely tasted like instant. But everything else was so good I'll let it slide. read more

I don't typically venture on the west side of town, but my husband wanted to check out a camera shop and a brewery. So, we decided to get something for lunch since the camera shop was unexpectedly closed. And it seemed a bit early for a beer, being 11am and all, regardless of being on a rainy Saturday. My husband mentioned this place as having good fried chicken. I have my favorite place on the east side of town, so I am always up for trying another local place to compare it to. When we got the menus, I noticed it said "20 minutes to prepare chicken". So we decided to get chicken to go for when we were at the brewery and for dinner later today. For lunch we got their Sauerkraut and met. This was FANTASTIC and incredibly tasty. The sauerkraut was warm and complimented the mett and mashed potatoes with melted butter. The mett had a crispy skin and juicy on the inside. The mashed potatoes were silky smooth and tasty and OH MY the butter................. I almost forgot the applesauce. DEFINITELY homemade in house. Chunky and not sugary tasting. It came with a little thimble size cup of cinnamon sugar, in case you wanted to add some. My husband and I couldn't eat this fast enough. I will DEFINITELY keep this place in mind when I am on the west side of town, as rare as that is. read more

It's editable. I'm sure I'll regret coming here without tums. Quality was okay. Came for the buffet, which had trouble being stocked on a consistent basis. All the fried food seemed to have a bad after taste, perhaps of old oil. The saving grace, and the reason for the two stars it received: the waitress was great, and the creme pies are homemade. Literally the WORST service I've ever had. My friend and I waited 20 minutes for someone to notice us. Thank God for Shannon. The only waitress there who seems to actually care about her customers. Upon inquiring about their mashed potatoes I was adsvised they were instant. Really? I'm paying restaurant prices for generic instant potatoes cause you couldn't hire some guy to peel a few spuds? No, thank you! Got the German sampler platter. Their highly lauded hot bacon slaw. Not a fan. A warm vinegar/sugar based dressing over huge fronds of cabbage that were difficult to land in one's mouth with a few from the bag bacon crumbles on top. Thus far two dishes discussed, two major components from a bag (potatoes and bacon.) The sauerbratten was served on boxed noodles, (third boxed item.) It consisted of three half dollar sized pieces of meat nicely soft when consumed with a brown gravy from the box, (#4.) O.K., a bit sweet for my taste and not postcard worthy. The german cabbage was actually quite good. The wekk (smoked sausage) was good, but that's more the butcher's doing than theirs. The potato pancake was a perfect triangular affair that screamed "frozen." That's #5 pre-fab. I inquired if the iced tea were brewed or from the fountain, and apparently boiling water is too much trouble so no homemade tea. Diet Coke please. One of the apple fritters was on the sampler as well. It was fine. Dough with a hint of apple rolled into a hushpuppy sized ball and deep fried. If you get this plate eat this first as if you wait 5 minutes as did I, the tastiness diminishes by 50%. The wife had been here once before without me and talked up the chicken livers, so we got some as an appetizer. Not a huge fan of deep-frying them so the big crunch and over-cooked nature of the beast was unwelcome to my palate. While plentiful, dropping one on the serving dish likely would have resulted in the tinkle of glass as the dish shattered. The prime rib the wife had was ok but not good enough to cause the legendary "cleaning of plate" that only takes place on rare occasssion, indeed at least half of it went home in the take away box. So, in summary if you want a good homestyle meal, the featured german food isn't necessarily where it is to be found, indeed you could do just as well with a grocery cart and a trip to your local mega-mart, and then just add water!!! My mom loves fried chicken & grew up in White Oak. So for her birthday lunch, she chose Ron's Roost. It wasn't too crowded for lunch on Labor Day, so we were seated right away. Immediately upon opening my menu I became skeptical. In my opinion, menus are sticky for only two reasons: #1 - the restaurant is so popular & busy, the hostess doesn't have time to wipe them down before handing out to the next customer (good sign) or # 2 - the hostess is too lazy to wipe the menu down & there are years of stickiness & dirt caked on the menu (bad sign). Based on the small number of people, I guessed # 2 - and I'm pretty sure I was correct. When the rolls arrived at our table, I was hopeful. This seemed "down home" to me, so surely the rolls were made in house. Well the rolls were warm (from sitting under a heating lamp or something), but tasted like they were purchased at Krogers the day before. My mom loved her fried chicken, green beans, & mashed potatoes. The rest of us could have gone without. The portions are huge, perhaps to make up for the poor quality in my opinion. My fried chicken sandwich was twice the size of the bun, greasy, and not very flavorful. The mashed potatoes tasted as if they were made from a mix or instant. I would have much preferred the KFC two minutes from my parent's house than this forty minute drive to bland, crappy food. read more

Arrived at the Roost at 8:45 on a Wednesday night, both the storefront sign and the internet state the restaurant is open until 9:30. I was told that since they did not have any active tables they were closed. Strongly suggest you correct your posted hours to state that you close when you are slow, not the posted hours of operation. read more

Visiting from out of town and stumbled on Ron's Roost while we were looking for someplace else and decided to check it out. We were glad we did. The menu said they were famous for their fried chicken and that's what three of us chose. It was delicious and servings were very generous. The fourth person in our group had sauerkraut & metts and said it was delicious as well. Our waitress, Barbie, was very friendly and attentive. It seemed to me at the same time they renovated the restaurant they cut WAY BACK on quality. I've been here a few times and have never had a bad meal. I took my family here when they were in town as well and they all loved what they got as well! Its a rarity these days that you encounter a restaurant like this, which specializes in fried chicken, but they definitely know their stuff! I have had a few issues with my food taking far longer to come out than it really should have, based on presentation/how complex the meal is and that's my reason for a 4 star review instead of 5. Usually I have ended up there on buffet nights though, so that usually solves all issues with waiting on stuff. Their food is really reasonably priced, and their wait staff is delightful and friendly. There are tons of tv's everywhere, so if you want to be able to watch a game, this is kind of like a fancier sports restaurant. I don't know that I'd go on a fri/sat night, simply because of the size of the crowds there and how insanely loud it can get, but that's just my personal preference. Sometimes they have music there, which is a nice idea but in execution the space is too small to have a band w an amp, the tvs and all the folks in the restaurant. Their patio is a nice option when the weather is nice and it is covered in cooler weather, so its a nice way to skirt some of the noise issues. read more

I went to Ron's Roost a couple of weeks ago with a friend of mine. It was a busy Friday night, probably due to the chicken and fish buffet. Going in, since there were so many people waiting, it took a while to be seated, and then it took another while for the waitress to put our order in. But once we got our order in, the service was relatively quick. I ordered one of the fish entrees with salad and baked potato. Everything tasted really good. I will definitely come back. read more
