I really like Ron's Roost. Service is friendly and goes the extra step. They have a ton of food options and good food too.

We ordered carry out, as some other times. The food has not been good and this Saturday evening, August 4 was TERRIBLE. Ordered MEAT Loaf. Asked my son , before eating it and he said it had no flavor, tasted like bread and NO ground beef and he is older. I tasted mine and agreed. It looked like ALL bread or stuffing and NO ground beef. The baked potato was very dry and could not eat it. The Hot Slaw was tasteless. My husband ordered the Metts and Sauer Kraut. Said it was not too bad, but the mashed potatoes are the powdered ones, with no milk or butter. In addition, the green beans are canned ones with nothing added. Long time west sider who has visited Ron's Roost many times in the past. On this particular occasion, we ordered an 18 piece chicken meal for carry out. Upon receiving the meal, it was super hot, so we thought it was fresh out of the fryer. After the short commute home, we opened the food and started digging in. Almost immediately, everyone was giving the same feedback that the chicken was very dry and seemed like it had been sitting out for a while. I'm not sure if they gave us a bad batch or if they took some from the buffet line, but the quality that I expect from Ron's Roost wasn't there. It was quite a disappointing meal. read more

Been going here for years but what gives with the change in quality of meals and sides. Ok, we always start with the hot slaw, only today's was watery and lacked that great hot/sour tang. Bacon was sparsely applied on all 4 of the servings at the table. The coleslaw diner also reported mediocre slaw at best ( better at frisches). Ok, I ordered the supposedly award-winning sauerbraten and potato pancakes. Now as a German, I know my sauerbraten. Only this was strange textured meat in an even stranger sauce. The waiter asked what was wrong to which I told them I didn't like the food. They mentioned, oh, we get that about once a week- people just not liking it. My husband paid the bill and was asked how everything was. He was honest about my dislike. The employee argued with him stating that it wasn't possible " cause everyone likes their sauerbraten." Funny, but I didn't and there wasn't an offer to remake it, or bring me plain noodles or a different side .......only the offer of a box for my meal minus the two (2) bites I took of the entree. Been going here for over 20 years. Great food especially if you love German food. Chicken is amazing. Customer service is hit or miss though. Servers and front reservations tend to be rude and unhappy but the food is worth it. read more

My experience was horrible because I violently threw up the second I got home. I was not sick before I went there, but within minutes of finishing & paying for the meal, I became tremendously ill. I barely made it home before vomiting with great gusto. Felt great before dinner, was hungry for a nice chicken dinner, ate the Roasted Chicken dinner with Stuffing and Wild Rice with gravy. This is a case of spoiled food... After purging my system from the spoiled food, I once again feel good, which tells me it was the dinner that did me in. Called the manager, who said she was sorry, and would remove the items that I ordered from their service line for the rest of the night; which was the responsible thing to do. However, when she offered me a gift card!, of all things! I declined, as I will never go back again. read more

i have only attempted to eat here once.. my family stopped in one night and we were seated, got some drinks and bread, and were browsing the menu. all of a sudden our waitress told us that they wanted to leave and were closing for the night. it was eight o'clock!!! the sign said there hours were open until 10. i will never go here again after the awful experience we had there. they even made us pay for our drinks. ridiculous read more

I really like Ron's Roost if I'm in the mood for chicken. My husband and I have been here a few times since moving to the west side of the city. The fried chicken is nice and flavorful without being dry. The first time I had the buffet and while good, I prefer to order off the menu. A favorite is the wing night on Wednesdays. We often order some take out for a quick yummy dinner. This place is known for being a west side staple and while I enjoy that aspect there are other places around with similar menu selections. read more

This is definitely an absolute no frills kind of place... I was suprised at how crowded it was on a Wednesday night...so people must really love it... Unfortunately I wasn't all that impressed. The rolls came out and were clearly from a bag of some sort (definitely not made in house) with a small container of pre-packaged butter. When I asked the waitress whether she would recommend the baked or mashed potatoes with the chicken, she told me that the mashed potatoes were instant. I have such a hard time with the fact that a place that sells so much chicken and potatoes would serve instant mashed potatoes..... I went with the baked potato. The chicken was fine....it comes on a plate barely big enough for the chicken/potatoes with absolutely no attempt to make the plate look pretty....The baked potato came with the prepackaged butter and sour cream. I gave it three stars, because as far as fried chicken goes, it wasn't bad.... They just have a lot of things that could be improved. read more

The sign on the door clearly states this establishments' hours, closing at 10 on a Saturday night. Got there at 9 and we see folks inside eating, but the doors are locked. After calling and inquiring about it, we were told there was a "grease spill" in the kitchen. The lady on the phone was rude and had no sense of customer service. Very disappointed when, after reading other reviews, I discovered others had similar experiences. I just don't appreciate being lied to. Won't even try to visit in the future. read more

Ron's Roost is a Cincinnati west side staple. I have been coming here since the 1990's and I have not had a bad meal here. The menu features German style cuisine in a casual dining atmosphere that has a sports bar alter ego complete with a lot of pub grub options. It is not upscale or trendy. The best word that I can find to describe it is comfortable. Personally I am a big fan of the fried chicken which is the Specialty of the House. It is always plump, tender and juicy and the pieces are nice and big. The crust has an amazing texture and is always perfectly seasoned. You do not have to worry about breaking the bank at Ron's Roost and it is indeed a classic neighborhood dive if I ever saw one. Before I wrap this review up I noticed that Ron's Roost has been reviewed a few times here on Yelp.com and I just wanted to point out something. Under the title Ron's Roost is described as with the word Soul Food and Steakhouse. I would to make it absolutely clear that it is neither. As I said earlier in this review most of the items that are on this menu are indeed German. read more

Fried chicken is excellent, meatloaf is excellent, slaw is excellent, service is excellent. Everything was excellent until we bit into those mashed potatoes - ewe, INSTANT?!! Really? Big disappointment from a home town restaurant like Ron's Roost! Even Golden Corral has home made mashed potatoes. Why would you take such an excellent thing and kill it with something like instant mashed potatoes? read more

Fried chicken livers awesome. Ordered without gravy otherwise comes drowned in brown gravy that takes all the crunch away. Great dipped in their hot wing sauce. Disappointed mashed potatoes are chemical box tasting. Service excellent. Friendly. read more

We went there last night for dinner. It was jammed packed. Naturally my first thought is "Man they MUST be good for this kind of wait". We wait our 20 mins and I am fine with that. We sit and I see a huge banner they have been open for 55 years. GREAT... they must REALLY be awesome. We order and the waitress was very sweet. Rolls come and they are pretty good. My hubby orders baked cod, mashed potatoes, and green beans. I order snitzel (sorry can't spell worth a darn), potato cake, green beans. Food comes. I can tell instantly it is mostly prefab. Totally totally disappointed. Canned green beans with no flavor and with a puddle of juice from the can. Mashed potatoes and gravy- both prefab. Potato cake.... was a hash brown. What a waste. The cod was meh. The snitzel was actually pretty good. So the meat earns one of the stars and the waitress earns another. There was also supposed to be live music to start at 8. They were still warming up at 8:50 when we left. Never shall I return, not even if my meal was free. read more

We had been wanting to try this restaurant for awhile as it is always packed on the weekends, we thought it would be a nice place. I wish we had went somewhere else. When we walked in there was one party waiting ahead of us, they said it would be a 15 minute wait. Then multiple parties came in and as time passed we noticed people who arrived after us being seated. We went to the hostess, who unapologetically found us a table. This table had half eaten celery, bits of chicken etc on the floor next to it, which was never cleaned up while we were there. The server hardly checked on us and didn't offer any refills. We received our appetizer with no plates and since she hadn't come back, we ate them on our napkins. She also took my fork and didn't return so I had to share my boyfriends fork. The food was mediocre at best. The salad looked like they dumped bagged Kroger salad in a bowl, the chicken tenders on the appetizer platter were bland and the mashed potatoes I could have gotten from the KFC drive thru. The only thing I did like was the fried chicken. Very disappointing. read more
