I LOVE the furniture in here! A little pricey, but it's great quality (the wood is actual wood instead of that cheap stuff) and most of the furniture is made in the USA!! The first time I came I was a little upset at the customer service as the lady that greeted me wasn't really listening to what needs I had. But when I came in the second time I was helped by a lady named Lizzie and she was awesome. She even followed up with me after I had purchased my parsons table. Never had better customer service in a furniture store. R&B was patient with our multiple trips to work out the furniture we wanted, and they didn't even flinch when I did a whirlwind session of dumping dozens of fabric samples on one particular chair. The stores are a pleasure to shop in, and the DC store is particularly nice. It's also never difficult to find a sales associate to help you. Something you can't say at a lot of other furniture stores that sell at R&B's price point. Not everything we got from R&B was a slam dunk, but you can't fault the company for that. From shopping, to ordering, to changing our order, and delivery, Room and Board is great. read more

I can't say how good the quality of the furniture is over time, but from just their appearance having walked around the 4 level store, they have some very impressive and modern pieces. I think they are much better than most other furniture stores, such as Pottery Barn, West Elm, or Design Within Reach. I also like that you can make custom furniture. Despite the long wait, this place lives up to the hype. Just the space itself is impressive. Loft atmosphere with industrial windows, 15ft ceilings (I'm guessing), exposed ductwork, and one hell of a rooftop deck that gloriously showcases their outdoor collection. If available for private rentals, seriously consider this place: prime location, expansive views, and plenty of seating :) Oh yeah, and I like the furniture too. Everything you see online, but you can test it out. Our salesperson was extremely helpful as we navigated 4 floors to find the perfect couch. Also picked out a bedroom set. On Sat they had cheese/crackers/fruit/drinks set up and gave away reusable bags which were actually fashionable (dark grey with subtle design). Some ppl will criticize for the pricing, but I praise the company's use of locally grown woods (maple, walnut, cherry from Vermont and Virginia). Solid wood construction built in the USA will last longer than Chinese veneer plastered over MDF coated with poisonous paints. These are probably the same ppl who use plastic shopping bags instead of reusable ones. Let's all roll our eyes at them. And for the record, I have a Room & Board sleeper sofa that is 10+yrs and still going strong. read more

Room & Board has convinced me to never buy furniture anywhere else. There are three stories worth of showrooms (there's supposed to be a fourth, I think, but there were renovations). I actually got a ton of ideas just from walking around. Prices are pretty steep, but the furniture is beautiful, classy, and well-made. Staff there is friendly and helpful, but not obnoxious or pushy. I told one woman the style of couch and color I was looking for and showed her a picture of the paint job in the living room, and she gave me a suggestion for a fabric I wouldn't have really looked twice at, but now I'm in love with it. She gave me a few swatches of other fabrics too and sent me home so that I could check them all out against the paint. The delivery service was great, too. They gave me a window of 10:30 - 12:30, and arrived promptly at 10:30 to set everything up. It's white glove service so they'll put things right where you want them. The furniture was all in perfect condition. (The white-glove delivery costs 89 bucks, but it's so worth it). I decided after taking a look that I wanted to exchange the coffee table I ordered for a larger size. I called R&B about it, and the exchange process was super easy -- they don't charge you another delivery fee. You just set up an appointment window for them to pick up the item you don't want, and they'll drop off your new item. In short, buying from Room & Board was a really fun experience. I will absolutely purchase furniture there in the future. read more

I've purchased over $10,000 worth of furniture from Room and Board in Washington DC, because I love the style and quality. The in store customer service is second to none, but if you ever need to make a service call more than once for the same problem...don't. I've had to make a service call for the same button that popped off twice and I was rudely told by Angeleek in the DC service center that there's nothing they can do. I asked her if this means that I have to used a buttonless couch, she said "yup". If that is their meaning of high level service, that's unfortunate. I will never buy another thing from that store again. You would think that they would be more accommodating since they actually take "six months" to make the requested piece of furniture. Save your money and shop at places that actually have a real warranty on their product. read more

I drove 45 mins from home to look at the Mayer and Linger sectionals to see in person and to look at the fabrics. However, only one sales associate was friendly enough to answer some questions. I wish I was able to find her again to get help with ordering. Other sales associates that were not helping customers and were free to assist could care less. The products are lovely and there is a wide range to choose rom when furnishing your home but it's the customer service that stands out and is head and shoulders above the rest. Greeted as you entered and directed to where you'll find what you are looking for is you need it. EVERYONE has an IPad, knows what is where is the store, and can check easily to see what is in stock. Delivery folks call ahead, are courteous and knowledgeable as well. The design service is provided at no-charge to customers. We've returned. And t he one time there was a problem (fraying rug soon after purchase) they responded immediately with concern, assurance and ready with an exchange. They are worth the premium. read more

I have been very satisfied with my experience at Room & Board, but there are some minor things I would like to note. The shopping experience itself is very pleasurable. Their sales associates are patient and they don't work on commission. They allow you to spend as much time in the store as you need. Also, some of their associates have educational background in interior design, which is so helpful. The physical space is large, airy and has an outdoor rooftop that shows great views of the Logan/U St area. R&B does custom furniture, sofas and chairs specifically, so you can pick from array of fabrics that are all available in the store. They have very large samples allowing you to go from level to level draping fabrics over various pieces to see how they would look. They also give you free smaller swatches to take home. I purchased a sofa after about 3-4 hours of browsing (and I spent many hours online before that). I'm not a fabric expert, but their fabrics do seem to be high quality. Their furniture and accessories definitely trend to mid-century modern, meaning tailored, clean lines, and simple textured fabrics, but with organic touches like teak and other natural woods. I opted for R&B's "white glove" delivery service, which is reasonably priced (the same price as IKEA). My sofa came exactly as I had ordered it, although it felt a bit more firm than in the store. Perhaps the cushions will soften over time. It looks great, though. Very Don Draper. I was hoping for a better selection of R&B's small sofas on the floor. In DC we don't have much space and it would be nice to see these smaller pieces. Also, it would be nice if some of the associates knew more information about where the furniture was sourced from and how it is constructed. Second, their prices are a bit high. I can excuse the items they source from Herman Miller, such as the office chairs, Eames and Noguchi lines, etc. Those are expensive no matter where you go. Their sofas are generally affordable, but I was surprised to see some of their other pieces seemed overpriced. Much of their office furniture and shelving is quite expensive, and If you are sourcing accessories like rugs, lighting, and pillows, perhaps consider looking elsewhere for less expensive pieces. And these pieces are not particularly inspired, even if they are well-made. Finally, also with respect to money, it would be great if R&B offered financing. I was a bit discouraged by that. But hey, if you can't afford it, don't buy it. read more

What a gorgeous store! Not to mention the quality of the furniture and the staff is very helpful. I recently bought bedroom furniture at the store and had the most amazing experience....no pressure, no hassles! Ezra was my design associate and with his help I was out the door after 1 hour of looking around and ordering my pieces. I added pieces to my order a week later. Piece of cake! I called the DC number, gave the design associate my order number, and once again I was done in less than 10 minutes. They had my credit card info on hand and sent me an email with my updated receipt within 5 minutes of hanging up. I would HIGHLY recommend buying furniture here. Stay away from Bo Concept! I had an awful experience there three years ago and I would never go back - due to service and quite frankly the quality is lesser than R&B. Now let's see how the delivery goes! read more

The order process 8 weeks ago went smooth but after that it's been a long waiting process to schedule delivery. Items that we were told were in stock are still waiting to be made by the manufacturer 8 weeks after our initial order. We are basically told now that we will not get the items until almost 4 months after our initial order at the earliest. The sales associate knew we were pressed and bought based on original delivery promises. When asking for clarification we are getting the run around with no explanation as to how items are in stock one moment and then on back order. I cannot recommend room and board. read more

I really like this store. I love the location and I was surprised by it because I didn't expect to see all of the furniture on 4 floors. It's located in a great spot, so it's great as a showroom. Parking will be a hassle. Just know that. It's near U street (Shutter Island) so get ready for an experience with that. The upper deck is a real treat. I've only been there once, so I am not sure if there are events, but it just seems made for it. This is a more upscale store, but there are a few pieces that are well worth the price. Emphasis on few. I absolutely loved the floor mirrors and hope to purchase one from them. The staff so far was friendly. Eager to help and make a sale if they can. But friendly nonetheless. They didn't apply too much pressure. I was told that some of the items (like tables, etc.) takes between 6 - 8 weeks for delivery. Doesn't sound too far fetched from other stores like Ashley furniture. I am curious on how that works out. So far I've read one bad review about the furniture arriving faulty and experiencing a delay. That also sounds like a common problem. read more

I went in with the intention of ordering a couch which was going to be $4k+ and left in disgust. They wrote me off and were miserable. This place should go out of business because of its staff. R&B is a great and refreshing addition to DC's often stale, traditional furniture store model. Contempo and modern collections liven things up. While Georgetown has its share of stylish storefronts, only R&B gives you the full experience with a multi level showroom. You can try out most of the catalog! It started with me ordering a bed frame online. I knew it was what I wanted (I'm rather partial to anything steel, because it will last). It ended with me swooning. Their delivery staff carried the heavy frame up to my second-floor condo, put it together, and then asked me about my mattress. "I'm glad you asked!" It's a Sleep Number, so we had to maneuver the pump, tubes, and wires in (on the plus side, the mattress is only 30 pounds for a King, so they did have the benefit of that!). NO PROBLEM, for them, they worked with me to get all that in place, and then place the platform and then mattress on the frame. Above and beyond, for sure. I'm awaiting a custom couch for my new home, and I expect it to be just as awesome. Will update if otherwise! read more

Furniture quality is great but does not provide a premium service. The associates delivering the furniture items were excellent. They gave a call prior delivery, arrived on time, made precautions during a rainy day, and was very efficient. However, I believe we were made to expect Room and Board invested more their delivery than others. At the store, I was corrected by the store associates that it wasn't just delivery.. it was "white glove service". When we chose a delivery date, we were told we would be contacted to discuss times and room placement. We were just emailed a set time instead. The internet videos showed that you should expect a room and board truck and associates in room and board polos. Our delivery had a enterprise rental truck. Our delivery associates was excellent but all other components was subpar for the premium appearance compared to other stores. read more

I love the furniture here. The style of the furniture is quite timeless and they have something for everyone. The leather here is top notch. There are so many different types of leather to choose from depending on your level of effort to care for the furniture. We are building a new house and will be furnishing a large portion of the house with room and board furniture. I also really like the selection of outdoor furniture. Some time ago, I bought two armchairs from Room & Board here in DC. Unfortunately, when they arrived, a tiny plastic piece was missing from the bottom of the leg of one of the chairs, with the result that a protruding nail scratched my wooden floor. I won't bore you with the details, but what started out as apparently a small problem turned into one that was very expensive to fix. They sent out some floor specialists they work with, who ultimately determined that the whole floor in that room had to be refinished. And if that weren't expensive enough, to refinish the whole floor required hiring piano movers to move a grand piano out of the room and then back in again. I'm pretty sure that the total cost to Room & Board must have exceeded the purchase price of the chairs - certainly it would have eaten up any profit they made. But from the very start, they were extremely cooperative and helpful, and never gave me any problems at all about their paying for what needed to be done to fix the problem. i am updating my review, since I did end up buying from Room and Board. I ordered a dresser, a table and a bedside table. I ended up exchanging the dresser for a different size, and I have to say R&B after sales service was exceptional. The exchange process and the followups to make sure everything was taken care of could not have been better. So I am upgrading my rating. The furniture I ordered is beautiful and well made, and given my crappy experience with the "designer" at the dc store, i chose to order online, so that I won't have to deal with anyone at the store. So my take - check out the goods at the store, and they have some really great products - but don't bother dealing with the store if you end up with horrible service like I did. The online ordering and subsequent after sales service were exceptional. read more

We've bought a couple couches from Room and Board, both of the sofa with chaise type. One's fine, but the other - a Harding - developed a very deep divot in the long chaise cushion. Per instruction, we fluffed and prodded and fluffed some more! But the divot stubbornly remained. We called the store and asked for it to be replaced, and, appropriately, they did. We picked it up from the store and took it home and put it to use, but the divot appeared again! To the point where a person sitting on the chaise cushion is sunk a good four or five inches below the surface of the adjoining cushion. Which basically renders the couch dysfunctional. So we went back to the store and, figuring we were faced with a defective design, asked for a full couch replacement. They said, no, they can't do that, but to try a cushion made of synthetic instead of natural down. We respond, well, fine, what choice do we have? That's when the real problems start. It took weeks for the cushion to be ready in the first place, and when it was we asked when we could pick it up at the store. Room and Board said they couldn't deliver to the store, and that we'd have to schedule time to wait at home for their people to deliver it. Which was impossible - because of their infrequent delivery windows and our frequent travel and work. We said, well, you delivered to the store before. They said that was a "one time accommodation." An "accommodation." Lucky us. For their defective product. We're still stuck with a defective couch. read more

American-made, sustainably sourced, solid wood furniture. Not just that - it's beautiful. The store is laid out really nicely, and the way the stuff is floor modeled gives great food for thought. I've thought more than once, "Yeah, if I could afford it I'd just get that whole living room." But of course I can't afford it, because not even a pillow will get you out for less than $100, while a dining room table could run you from about $1,500-$3,000 (with another $350-$500 per chair). So why still 5 stars? The customer service is beyond fantastic, the furniture is worth breaking the bank for if you can, and looking is free - I've gotten a lot of home decor inspiration just from wandering around the store. read more

Being accustomed to the Room & Board in San Francisco and their five star customer service, friendliness and well stocked sales floors- 14th St falls way short on all accounts. At any given visit you'll find four floors with a total of 3-4 customers store wide. Employees always gather around computers and/or sit at desk. If you want help you'll have to approach them and then is when you realize you've stepped into urban high end furniture store snobbery- 14th St style. Looking for picture frames and you'll be told that they're displayed all over the store with no specific location- a four floor search for picture frames = exhausting. Highly likely, at least from my experience, that whatever you choose is not in stock and will have to be ordered. This location could certainly do for some happiness, some good customer service training and some will to offer something on the shelf I could purchase and walk out with. On the other hand, omitting these faults, the quality at Room and Board is top notch and will last- consider it an investment. Never any mark-downs and never, that I recall, a "Sale". It's regular full price. read more

My wife and I purchased a few picture frames from here. Our first experience was fine. They didn't have enough in stock so they had to ship the rest to them - no problem. One of the frames they shipped was slightly broken. So she took it into the store hoping to exchange it for an identical item. Instead of exchanging it, the person working there (David) says, "oh you can't even see that from the front." After an unnecessary argument, he agreed to exchange the replacement glass. But he refused to do it himself - telling her she had to replace it. So she did... and then his fingerprints were on the glass, she asked to clean it and he handed her some Windex standing there while she had to do it. That's the customer service I expect at Walmart. read more

Beautiful pieces that appear to be well constructed, but sometimes when you get them home there are problems. A lamp I bought stopped working after a week or two, and it was a monumental hassle to get it exchanged. (It would have been easier and cheaper to just take it to a local lamp store and pay for a repair). A dining table arrived with the stain looking like it had been applied by a three-year-old. They were gracious about changing it out. Three years later, though, that same table has a few faint white rings where someone put very hot mugs down on a placemat. Their solution is not to use fine sandpaper and rewax it (which is on their website) or to try the hairdryer trick from the internet, but to have the entire table professionally refinished. This won't keep me from buying things there again; I like the stuff that much. But this furniture is not trouble-free. Maybe our mothers were right to keep plastic covers on everything and tell us over and over to be more careful! read more

We were assisted by 4 different salespeople who were extremely friendly and beyond helpful. Although it means we have to wait a couple of months for the furniture to arrive, we very much appreciated that every detail of both pieces was customizable. This allowed us to purchase pieces that fit, both in terms of size and style, the combined living/dining space of our condo. read more

I feel if you are going to spend $10k+ on furniture you should be happy with your experience. The furniture here is beautifully made and elegant. My first experience three years ago buying a condo full of furniture was amazing. When I bought a new house and wanted to supplement with new pieces I felt the level of customer service went down compared to my prior experience. Delivery estimates were way off and unlike my first experience there wasn't any transparency in the process and the timelines provided were misleading. If you don't have any time constraints and if you like the furniture, I would work with a sales associate in person to make the experience better. I was planning to furnish two additional rooms with their furniture, but will pass now because of my experience. read more

When we moved from a small condo into a house, I bought a lot of furniture from Room & Board: a sectional, ottoman, rug, two beds, two nightstands, two lamps, a chair... I love it all. The quality is great, all of it has held up great (2+ years now) the customer service (in store and delivery) were great. They seem to be trending more and more contemporary/modern and phasing out some of their more classic (but still streamlined) lines, like Riley, which is too bad -- for me, since I like the latter. But I love R&B and would recommend it to anyone. read more

Great layout, definitely a huge store for the city address. This place sticks to a particular style so it's a love-it or hate-it situation. While I appreciate the wood craftsmanship it's a little too retro-modern for my taste, but I came in for sheets, rugs, accessories, etc. They have awesome sheepskin rugs, unfortunately the 3rd party brand actually sells & ships to USA for less (via their website) than the Room & Board in-store prices. No reason to buy from this store therefore unless it's an item they make in-house. read more

Failed to meet the agreed delivery date despite two months of lead time, then failed to meet the rescheduled delivery date, then failed to meet the one after that, with no explanation given. Finally cancelled the order after the third delay, still have no idea what happened to the couch. read more

Amazing experience. First of all the store is so beautiful I wanted to buy everything. The quality is exceptional, and all the employees are very knowledgeable. But I came with a mission- for a new bed. Found the Marlow, and had it custom made in a fabric I wanted. It's definitely my biggest splurge item to date, but it makes our room and it's so nice to know we'll have this piece for decades. Makes our room look like it's out of a design magazine or pinterest. The customer service though was on a different level. If you need to call Room and Board the first point of contact is an actual person, delivery is a breeze and they set it up for you and make sure there are not issues. The only danger is I may be addicted, I now think I need a new dresser... read more

One of my favorite furniture places to just go and see floor by floor everything room set-up they have. You get to really experience the furniture. The atmosphere is so open and cozy, it's really a great spot. They usually have great events here as well, and accompanied by a rooftop terrace, you really just zone out here. Would love more sales and although the pieces are reasonably priced for the quality, they may not always be budget friendly. read more

I really like this store so your mileage may vary. Have been a customer of R&B for the past 10 years; however this is the first time I stepped into the store. We are moving into a larger house and needed a ton of stuff. After selecting online, we went into store. We had scheduled an appointment with Kathy L, who was extremely helpful in guiding us. I am so glad we went as we ended up making a # of changes based on actually seeing/feeling the furniture. We love the contemporary look, and R&B in our opinion is one the best stores in that space.
