The selection is not great, the people are extremely rude, and the sizing is a bit strange. They don't seem to have any desire to sell things to you, it's all up to the customer to tell them "take that one out, show it to me". This is a terrible attitude for a store on a block full of desi clothing stores, as the customer can simply go to a different one,and should! Even worse, if they take out one thing, they insist that you buy the first thing you see, and are extremely hesitant and rude about taking out more. Roopam Sarees doesn't value its customers! Go to saree palace instead, where the prices might be a little more expensive, but the quality of both the salespeople and the clothes is much, much better! read more

I have been here many times and in the beginning the staff wasn't as nice as it has become over time. Maybe they just recognize me as a more frequent customer, whatever it is, they are very nice and helpful now. You do have to keep pushing them to show you items and they and they are super picky about you trying on clothes "be careful, don't rip the pajama...let me zip you up" type of comments are frequent upon every trial. That being said, they are reasonably priced and work with you to you leave happy. I have found many outfits here and it is still one of my go-to places for Indian clothes in the bay area. read more

I've dealt with Roopam as a wholesale purchaser. While they have a high minimum, once I hit it I get a good deal from them. Roopam specializes in cheaper sarees. I've been to the other shops in the area as well as to Chicago. If you're looking for every day sarees, it's a good place. I buy for the belly dance trade, so cheap, supple and plain is what I seek. As for service, when I'm dealing with someone born and raised in a foreign country I expect the service to be different. Possibly the complainers have failed to bargain. Bargaining is traditional in India and likely the vendor looses respect for the client when he fails to do so. In any event, if I get the product I want for the price I need, I ignore the fine points. read more

One of the better Indian clothing stores that I've encountered, but only due to one thing - TIMING. For the best service possible, show up when the store opens (or at least within the first hour). The minute more and more customers wander in, the service begins to hit rock bottom pretty fast. Attention is no longer focused, time is no longer put into the customer, and all eyes are glazed over with $$$. The pricing here is very reasonable compared to other stores nearby and also in the South Bay. Selection may be a tad slimmer, but if you're reasonable, then the store has plenty to offer - both women's and men's wear. Alterations are hellish pretty much everywhere you go, and Roopam is no exception. These guys took their pretty time in ordering and tailoring things that we ordered with plenty of delay - definitely NOT an ideal circumstance when it comes to wedding wear. The owner did agree to drop a delayed outfit off to my parents' place in Fremont one evening after the store closing, but that did no good when my parents had to schlep back to Berkeley to return the outfit for tailoring since it was so ill-fitting. This place is the "BOMB"!!! Very friendly service and they're not at all offended if you try to bargain a little. A very nice selection of sarees to fit any budget. We were three (3) guys buying women's sarees for a red dress benefit and they were so welcoming and friendly and very helpful! I've purchased a saree from them a few years back and they weren't at all rude that men were buying women's sarees. This is definitely not my first choice for where to shop for Indian outfits. I went to them when shopping for my wedding since I needed several different outfits and jewelry to go along with them. Personally I didn't like their selection of clothes but the jewelry was alright. I ended up buying most of my outfits from elsewhere, at cheaper prices. Their customer service really needs work. There are 2 younger ladies there that stare and chat in the back ground. I'm not entirely sure if they're innocently talking or mocking. It was awkward. Parking is also another issue with this place. I went to Roopam Sarees to browse for clothes for my wedding. You know, shopping. Shopping to me means: I'm looking for something, and I'm going to go to several stores and check out styles until I am happy with the purchase I am making. I may buy it that day, and I may buy it another day after shopping around. (Someone please let me know if they disagree!) Today I went to Roopam Sarees and asked if I could look at Bridal Lenghas. The guys studies me while chewing his paan, not saying a word. I looked at him with a raised eyebrow: "Um...can I take a look please?" He said, "I'm busy right now. Can you come back next week?" Okay, so I had driven an hour to Berkeley to look at lenghas. I said, "I've driven a long way to come here, can I please take a look?" The guys said, "No, no, come back next week. You aren't going to buy anything today anyway, are you?" I said, "No, I just started looking today so I'd like to see what my options are...." And he said "No, I'm too busy." So I told him "Okay....well, then I'm not going to come back here if you aren't going to show me anything." And he said, "Okay." Oh my gosh! I was in shock! No matter how good someone's inventory is, the least they could do is have some courtesy or good customer service. I walked into this store today with my family and had a horrible experience. No one greeted us. I gave a smile to the lady working there but she just stared at me with a dirty look. We looked at the sarees and waited a long time for someone to help us out but no one did. My niece finally asked the lady working there if she could try any in her size but she said no and told us to try again another time. If you want great customer service go to Sari Palace. I wish I could give this shop NO stars! They are a bunch of money hungry thieves! People like them make society the way it is. They own practically the entire street however they act like they don't. They mislead people by giving them the "nice honest" approach. Claiming that they give the best prices and discounts than anyone else on the block. ( they purposely raise prices in the smaller shops so their shop looks like it has the best price when in reality they are all over priced. The first day I go they are completely nice friendly people whom you just want to hug ! They supposedly gave me a 65$ discount on a shirt and skirt that costed 265$ so I "luckily" got it for 200. Feeling like I was pressured to buy it by the owner who was constantly saying buy it buy it. I bought it and went next door. They sold a mor detailed work saree skirt and top for 200 we managed to bargain for 160. I felt that I had been cheated from the first shop. I paid more than I should have. However that's not what angered me. I came back the next day to try to exchange it for something like my sisters, the sonic the hedgehog wanna be of a little boy had a sassy attitude saying " we have been in the business for 15 years our policy is no return or exchange". If that may be OKAY I DONT CARE. BUT WHY THE BAD ATTITUDE AND SASSY LOOKS? Smart talking and all. Sure u been here for 15 years but with this type of bad customer service we will see where they will be in the next 5 years. Horrible service. The first time I went there I tried on a sari & after going to three more I returned back to purchase the one i really like at this place. However, i saw three more to compare & another lady was there & told me I was not allowed to try on 3 more saris. She looked at me like I was asking for a free dress. She even insisted I could try it on over my clothing, like really lady?! The sari was $280 and she treated me like I was filthy. Then offered if I could try it on over my shoulder only b/c they are expensive and not worth trying on unless I guarantee to purchase it. I walked into this place interested in purchasing multiple items for an upcoming wedding. I was serviced by a few ladies. I was ready to purchase an expensive item and took it to the register. I was met by the owner's son who I did not interact with until it was time to pay. For no apparent reason, he gave me attitude. I asked him what prompted his behavior and he gave no reason. I decided to cancel my transaction due to his pompous, arrogant, and very disrespectful behavior. I highly recommend reading all of the reviews on yelp describing the terrible customer service repeatedly shown to clients on a routine basis. This is certainly not a one time circumstance, but happens on an ongoing basis for years. They are nice to you in the beginning and quickly show their true colors in the end. Don't bother. I was very clear that I had a max budget of $150, and the first dress she brought out was $849. I have a large chest, so the woman helping me was convinced I couldn't wear a normal sari/blouse so she brought me only awful, matronly dresses. I was very clear that I did not like the style, and she only brought me more of the same. If you are clueless about Indian fashion (as I am), do yourself a favor and go down the street to Sari Palace. The staff is very very rude and the clothes are below average quality and style. My fiancee tried on 1 outfit which was too small (and the sales lady tried to convince us it was perfect, typical Indian sales tactic). He was going to try on another size and the owner stopped us and said we couldn't try anymore outfits without placing an order. We said we'll leave then and he was like please go. How rude! How can you place an order after trying on 1 outfit and why would I when spoken to with such attitude? I love Roopam. The service we received as bridesmaids from Nitin was excellent! I'm not Indian, and this was my first time wearing a saree. This store has a wide selection to choose from, and it can be overwhelming for newbies like me, but Nitin was so helpful on every visit. He helped us make sure the sarees we bought fit, and his staff made sure to alter our outfits on the spot so that we didn't have to make multiple trips to the store just for alterations. I have never written a bad review about any store. But this place is soo BAD that I thought I should spare people the agony of dealing with these guys. The sales man/owner is EXTREMELY rude. I read all the reviews in yelp and went to Roopam Sarees expecting bad customer service/exagerated prices. Initially I was impressed and thought to myself, these guys are good and behaving well. I spent 15 minutes looking for a saree and the owner started to become very impatient. He said that I am wasting his time and need to take decision fast. I took a sari and the price tag was $540 and he said he will give it for $200. I swipe my card and the receipt comes as $220. I asked him why the difference and the owner becomes very angry. He says he cannont waste his time and started to attend to other customers leaving me at the counter. Meantime I look the sari in daylight and the color is totally different. I did not wanted to buy the sari but since I swiped my credit card and I thought I had no choice but to buy the saree. I could have called the credit card company from the store itself and walked out with out merchandise. My bad! In normal day light the sari looked totally different and CHEAP. It was my sis in law's wedding and I ended up buying another sari from Sari palace. What a waste of $220 !! word of caution: 1: check the color of merchanise in day light 2: Should know what you want, otherwise they will push you into buying something else. 3: EXTREMELY RUDE, PUSHY, ARROGANT owner. 4: check out SARI PALACE before you go to roopam sarees. The customer service at this store is horrendous! I should have listened to some of the reviews here on Yelp. I created an account just to share my experience here. We walked in looking for bridal outfits, no one greeted us. We got weird stares. It was awkward. The store was empty. The owner of the store seemed like he did not want to bring out the outfits. He brought out only two of them acting like we were going to choose from the two poorly crafted cheap outfits. You would think that they would bring out everything they had for someone looking for and seriously considering bridal outfits. Be prepared to be judged as soon as you walk into this store. They automatically assume you are not serious buyers and refuse to serve you. Not a good business model. You should show your customers why you are the best at what you sell and showcase your outfits. If you want to be lazy and not show customers your outfits, then you should close your store and stay home. The owner is just as clueless as the mannequins in this store. I asked about different types of materials, its quality and shine and he got visibly annoyed. I asked to use the restroom and he said they did not have restrooms, in a rude manner. I guess if you are spending hours at this store picking an outfit and need to go to the restroom, you are out of luck. Roopam can keep their restrooms. I went there looking for handloom silk sarees. They had a very limited selection - most of their stuff had lots of gaudy sequins on it. The salesman pulled out a few brocaded "banarasi" silk sarees. The quality of the fabric wasn't very good - it was the low priced, shiny kind - not smooth and flowing. Then I looked at the pallu, and was utterly dismayed to find, that the thing had been _stitched_ together, much like a curtain, with a separate fabric border! Aside from being inauthentic, it was not even aesthetically pleasing, tailored rather shoddily and in fact downright ugly. For those who're new to Indian sarees - traditional weaves are one continuous six (or nine) yard fabric, typically with intricate designs on the differently coloured "pallu" end piece. It takes a lot of skill for an artisan to dye the threads, arrange the zari embroidery and weave the design in, but the result is incomparably more graceful than something stitched together like this. The service was rather inattentive, especially given that there were fewer customers than salespeople (who seemed more interested in gossiping amongst themselves). Eventually, I asked to see the saree and pallu colours together in the mirror. As I was doing this, the salesman rather rudely told me, to not spoil the creases on the saree (which I was _not_, and in any event - he could have shown them himself, if he was so concerned, and more attentive) At that point, I thanked them and walked out. So not worth driving all the way to Berkeley for this. read more

On 8/18/12,we went shopping at Roopam Sarees in Berkerly. Would not recommend it anyone with kids.My 5yr old daughter had to use the Restroom. We asked for the RR and then went back to find out that there was no Toilet paper. Asked Store Management for a roll of Toilet paper and also explained that my daughter had to go. The man at the register told me that they do not use toilet paper because it gets stuck! He went on to say that we should go across the street to a restaurant. I looked at him and said "don't you use toilet paper" and went to another store to use the restroom. The restroom does not have a hand sink either- and they handle your Sarees. read more

I came here recently and the lady at the counter completely ignored me. She was putting some bangles together and didn't even look up. So finally I said hello and asked to look at some bangles. She continued to ignore me and I asked again. Her response was I'M BUSY. I asked if there was someone else that could help me and she said WE ARE ALL BUSY and shook her head. I'M THE ONLY CUSTOMER IN THE STORE!!!! At this point, it was obvious she didn't want to help me intentionally.
