I love Rooster & Rice. I've tried a lot of chicken and rice spots over the years including Chicken Meets Rice in San Jose, Gai Chicken and Rice in San Francisco, and even the famous Nong's Khao Man Gai in Portland which I honestly think is overrated. In my opinion, Rooster & Rice does it better, especially when it comes to the flavor of the rice, the broth, and the sauces. This location is the smallest one I've been to with only a few tables, so it definitely feels more like a takeout spot than a dine in place. That said, the service was great. The lady working there was super nice and even gave me some complimentary hot sauce to try. Their habanero hot sauce is seriously fire. I'm also a big fan of their Thai sriracha. I actually buy it from Asian grocery stores and use it with pho or fried chicken all the time. I just wish I lived closer to one, but I'll definitely be back whenever I'm in the area. read more

I placed a DoorDash order for pickup and it went smoothly, got everything we ordered, and requests were accurate as well. The food is solid and consistent with other locations I've tried! There are limited tables inside since it's a very small shop, so if you have 3+ people, you likely have to go elsewhere if tables are full. Small feedback would be specifying modifications on the DoorDash order form. It wasn't clear what each dish included, and I wasn't sure if marking jasmine rice meant replacing the broth rice. I took a gamble when ordering and got what I wanted, but it could've gone terribly wrong had I interpreted jasmine rice as broth rice and changed the sauce to ginger scallion! This location of Rooster & Rice is located in Santa Rita Square. Plenty of shared parking here in this big parking lot. They have kind of weird hours - closed for two days and they are closed early. I ordered their The Original Delivery, which comes with chicken with skin, jasmine rice, ginger scallion sauce, and a broth. The chicken was pretty dry, even with the ginger scallion sauce - the sauce had weird lingering taste to it that did not taste like the typical ones at other restaurants. The rice and broth were alright - not the best, but not the worst either. I remember having them at Westfield Valley Fair and they were a lot better than this location. There are other restaurants that have a similar dish to this that I had that is of better quality and quantity at the a similar price point. Excellent lunch spot in Pleasanton that focuses on their namesake -- chicken. Specifically poached Thai-style chicken and flavored rice. In addition to their tender chicken over rice, they have a tofu option and a riceless option as well, but highly recommend their original chicken over rice with sliced crisp cucumber and a soy sauce-based dipping sauce. Also highly recommend adding in their soft egg option as well as their ginger green onion sauce on the side and crispy chicken skin to mix in with the rice. Service was also friendly and efficient. Nothing beats something as clean and simple as chicken and rice, and this place does exactly that. No frills, no crazy sauces, nothing extra, just chicken and rice. They offer a few different sauces, a sweet soy sauce mix and a ginger scallion sauce. I got the sweet soy sauce but wish I got the ginger scallion instead, however, the soy sauce was still vey good. The chicken pieces were extremely hearty and it comes with a lot of rice. It comes with the broth that they cooked the chicken in on the side and it does have a very clean tasting flavor, imagine salt, and chicken essence, and that's it. You pick your version of how you want your chicken and rice and what kind of chicken meat (breast or thigh), and you also get a small cup of soup with your order. I ordered "The Original," which is chicken breast, mixed vegetables, and rice. All orders are placed in to-go containers. The indoor dining area is relatively small. The food portions don't justify the cost of how much we paid. We can see the cooks steaming more chicken and cutting it, and it's evident that they slice each breast and thigh in half. The chicken is thin and unflavored. They provide a soy dipping sauce they expect you to dunk your chicken in. Each bite was beyond salty because of the soy sauce. The chicken wasn't good by itself. The vegetables weren't seasoned either, and they were too hard. It would have been more edible if they had steamed the vegetables longer to provide a softer texture to match the chicken and rice. The soup was good and likely made from the chicken juices during the steaming process. Maybe the trick is to dump the chicken in the soup to get the chicken flavor. Who knows, we weren't given instructions to do that so I can only assume that not how most people would eat this meals. Honestly, I could make the same food at home at 1/4 of the price, and it would only take me 10 min, about the same length of time it took for us to get our order. It comes with breast and thigh with skin, cucumber slices and jasmine white rice. The food was disappointingly lukewarm in temperature. The chicken and rice was almost on the cold side. The house sauce was good and spicy. I asked for extra house sauce and habanero sauce. The sauces used to be complimentary but now they charge 2 for $1.95. Entrees also comes with a delicious chicken soup. I asked the cashier to make the soup extra hot. He was baffled... Service: 2/10 The cashier that took my order was clueless about everything. I asked if I could get my soup extra hot. His answer was, "ahhhhh, I don't know." And I asked for extra house sauce and habanero sauce and he was just as confused and non-committal with his replies. Ambiance: 8/10 Snug, simple, no frills. Overall: I was disappointed with the food served lukewarm/cool. And the extra charges for extra house sauce and hot sauce was an unpleasant surprise. This is my go-to for quicker, relatively healthy hainan chicken. As per different review of mine, I appreciate the simple and straightforward process for this hainan place. It focuses on only 3 real options to go for (traditional: which has breast and thigh, skin on, jasmine rice; marina: which is white meat only; veggie: ...) I ordered three traditionals for me and others. For me, the food and sauces don't disappoint, blending in with rice that's cooked perfectly, and served fast. All the chicken was de-boned with no shards/fragments and the chicken was still warm/hot, skin on (though you can choose to not have that, and to only get dark or white meat). It comes with cucumber, and blends together nicely with the sauces: ginger scallion or the peanut soy sauce. This location doesn't have a huge amount of seating, but I got my order to-go anyway. One gripe is you do only get one sauce to choose from, and it's an up charge for extra. That feels a bit nickel-and-dimey to me, but then again, maybe someone ruined it for us by asking for extra sauce all the time. It does gets a bit pricy for what you'd expect with hainan, but that seems to be the way things are going these days. Still a nice spot that I like to hit up for that hainan fix! read more

For some reasons, I couldn't find this store on their website so if you don't want to call , Yelp and Doordash are your only option . Quite a small shop but good for takeout orders. I love hainan chicken so I tried the #1 which sit the original (breast/thigh chicken with skin and jasmine rice/cucumbers). My favorite part is the rice because it's flavored (probably cooked in chicken broth) and also the sauce (gingery, soy sauce). I think pouring the sauce onto the bowl and mixing everything together gave it a lot of flavor. The chicken itself is standard; not super flavorful, decently cooked, thigh pieces were obviously much more juicy than the breast. Wife out the original with brown rice and extra veggies and an egg. I got their Thai special with extra chicken thighs and an egg. Consistent with what it remembered the chicken was soft and good. Rice was nice and fragrant. The egg was perfect. Here's my only disappointment; I think this might be the only place that charges for ginger sauce. I got two and it cost $3 something. The ginger sauce itself was ok. Little favor. But mixed with the soy sauce and chilli, it's much better. I don't know what it's missing but the ginger is missing something.
