Came here for the first time on a weekday during lunch and I was afraid it was going to be a long line/wait, but it wasn't. You can order on the kiosk/ipad or at the front. I got The Marina (without the skin) and waited about 5 minutes! It was quick! There's a table to grab extra sauces and a cup of water. The chicken was really good with the sauce that they gave. The other sauces I grabbed was good as well for some flavor. The rice was very plain. The soup was delicious. There are some tables and chairs inside, but there's also some outside near the fountain. Street parking, maybe be difficult to find. I would come here again! read more

1000/10, yummy Hainan chicken! My bf and I ordered the original and wow, just wow. Heaven sent! Check out the numerous to go orders already ready to be picked up early in the morning! The place is squeaky clean and since it was still super early, we had the place to ourselves. One con about this place is the restroom. The front desk security wasn't friendly and had to ensure we were customers in the building. I even asked if they needed to see proof of purchase. Other than that, so good, so delicious! I placed my order thru Doordash and i'm not sure if this is a piece of hair or whatever it is.. but it was on my chicken and i immediately lost my appetite! 2 bite in & ai threw everything away.. Rice was NOT fragrant nor warm too.. how upsetting read more

Is it the best Hainanese chicken and rice I've ever had? No. Does it make you feel warm and happy inside after being hangry and especially after a night of drinking? Yes definitely!! Ordered The Original as a takeout order requested all thighs with extra skin, extra cilantro, extra cucumber, along with their habanero sauce and ginger scallion sauce. The works. Didn't even need the extra sauce. The KMG sauce it comes with is tasty enough on its own. The Habanero sauce had a nice kick. Love that it comes with a side of broth. Aside from being pricy, I could only finish half and saved the rest for the next day's lunch. Good thing I requested an extra side of broth hehe love me some soup. Needless to say, I got my money's worth. :-) read more

I needed a quick lunch on my way to the airport and this place was super close by and came recommended by a coworker! The place itself is small but easy to find and there's minimal seating inside but also plenty of space in the plaza. I was able to quickly order at the counter and get my food in about 10 minutes so I appreciated the promptness!! I ordered the original chicken and rice and even though it was so simple, DANG this was so good!! The chicken was cooked perfectly moist and the sauce was so delicious (not that spicy so don't be afraid to lay it on there!!). Overall, great food and great portions, definitely check it out!! read more

zooweemama! So happy to try this limited item. The khao soi wasn't traditional in the sense it was more of a sauce than a curry or soup. It was super delish and came with so much chicken. The chicken was fork tender, thank goodness because I ate this outside the shop surrounded by people. this is the type of meal I want to just get so messy with, but instead ate politely and pulled the meat off with a fork. As a cilantro lover the dish was severely lacking enough cilantro. read more

Heard some great reviews for this place so we stopped it to get lunch to go on the way to the airport. We ordered and received our food in 10 minutes which was awesome. Definitely more of a to go because it is small! I got the classic chicken and rice and this was some of the best plain chicken I've ever had. The sauces the give you are great and the broth is just amazing. I put some in the bowl but drank the rest because it was that good. For such a simple combo this is delicious. Servings are also definitely generous. Don't be afraid of the sauce and pour it all on there!! 10/10 read more

As good as I remember it to be pre-COVID. Really simple, quality, good food. A bowl of rice with lean chicken atop it and kickass sauce. Moderately priced at about $20 including tax, tip. A lot of food for one meal so I had a little leftover for breakfast the next day. read more

Very disappointed with this location. I came in on a Friday afternoon for lunch, with many employees not being in office I figured it'd be quick. Service was definitely fast, waited only about 5 mins for my food. With that said, it's no wonder why I left not too satisfied with my meal ... both my broth and main course (The Original) were lukewarm, borderline cold. Portion of the rice and chicken was fine, I wish there was a bit more of the veggies. Ginger sauce is always 10/10, "spicy" hot sauce definitely had a kick to it! Habanero I believe it was, yummy but definitely spicy. Their fountain sodas are good, I got the Cola and liked the flavor (Sonoma branded or some sort). I opted to sit outside as it was a beautiful sunny day in SF, lots of outdoor seating. Inside there's not too much offered, but a few stools around the windows facing out. Have been getting Rooster for YEARS both from this and another location in SF. Yesterday I ordered the riceless (what I always order) and the vegetables were raw and stone cold. Literally cold enough ti have just come out of the fridge...did they forget to cook or heat my food? In the past they have at least been warm and steamed. I reported this to doordash but they did not issue a refund. For a $26 meal I got $5 back and tossed it - a $21 loss. Today I thought I would try again. To my surprise, the riceless is again lukewarm chicken thighs on a bed of raw cold vegetables - no longer warm, cooked vegetables. Add on the refrigerated sauces and you basically have a cold meal- yuk. I tried calling to inquire / confirm why they are no longer cooking the vegetables and it rang and rang... 3 calls, no answer until I got a fast busy signal and had to call again, so I again only got a $5 credit for a completely inedible meal at a dangerous temp for chicken. I actually did try to eat it, but the meat was mostly skin, tendons and cartilage so it went in the garbage. Food quality has gone WAY down, and prices, WAY up. This is my last meal here. read more

I love Rooster & Rice. I remember when they started out in the Marina and eventually opened this location YEARS ago, like 2017?? So they've been around for quite sometime and everytime I come here their meals are consistent. But today, I just had to write a review because my mini original plate was PACKIN with flavor. I don't even put hella hot sauce on my food like that but their pineapple habanero sauce was so flavorful as well I had a party in my mouth. read more

I loved The Original! I've always loved Khao Mun Gai, but Rooster and Rice's dish was spot on! Chicken was poached to perfection and the rice and soup were so tasty and light. Loved the chicken sauce. Attended during the day when Kevin Kreider from Bling Empire visited to promoted his new drink, Sans, which I liked as well. A sparkling water with ginseng. A bit of fizz taste and not sweet. Even with the scheduled visit, Rooster and Rice seemed to handled their orders well with two kiosks to order from or the counter. read more

I've walked by Rooster and Rice all over the bay and finally had a chance to try it out! My parents make the best Hainan chicken so I do have high standards... I got the original with soup and mmmm... it is delicious. I do wish they had the usual ginger and green onion sauce but the sweet sauce they have is a nice pairing. The food tastes so nutritious, fresh and healthy! It pales in comparison to my parents' food but good enough. read more

Great fan of this fresh outtake on chicken & rice. This might sound repetitive, but "fresh" is a great word to use to describe this food. All the sauces, broths and even the chicken were "clean" and "fresh". I highly recommend to anyone looking for something new or someone looking for a fresher take on lunch or dinner. read more

Surprised to find such an authentic and delicious Khao Man Gai/Hainan chicken rice place in this part of town! It's got everything from that sweet sour sauce and the broth nailed down. Would have liked the rice to be a bit oilier and the breast to be a bit less dry, but it's tasty and reasonably priced. read more

My order was filled to the brim with generous portions of chicken, and I had enough leftovers to eat for lunch the next day. The white meat is so fresh and juicy. The brown rice was on the drier side (how I like it) with great texture. The cucumbers quite thick. The only complaint about the dipping sauce was how small the portion was. The sauce and chicken broth were very flavorful. This is a solid choice for any type of meal. I definitely plan to come back sometime in the future. read more

I try to do self pickup online order and the system pool me to the main roosters and rice website. I got first confirmation but they don't show the location that I have to go to pickup. I am not sure about 2 location in downtown. I went to the right location at first place and the staff can't find my order then I go to another location in downtown and wait 15 min . Again staff can't find my order. Finally I got second massage after 30 min that I send order and just show I went to wrong location Thanks for staff get me refund and solve problem. Otherwise they can't make my order cause it's so long line. I will never order pick up from them again. read more

TBH, not as good as I've had before, especially compared to the R&R in the Marina but I try to get some khao man gai from R&R when I'm in the Bay. I am from the LA area and everyone raves about Savoy but I feel R&R's chicken, rice, and sauce are all so much better. The chicken was a bit drier this time though so that was disheartening. The rice itself was a hefty portion and it being brown rice allows you to feel a bit better. The sauce is the standout player. The ginger, soy, vinegar-y sauce makes the whole dish. It is key and you only need a bit on each piece of chicken and a bit drizzled over the rice and you are golden. I still feel this place is better than Savoy and although the chicken was drier than usual, still a solid choice for a meal. Life Hack: if you are looking to share with someone, order extra rice and extra chicken. You get about the same portion and you pay a less than what you would if you ordered two orders. You don't get the sauce or the soup but that can be shared! read more

There is nothing more comforting that a simple meal of chicken and rice. From the perfectly poached chicken to the fragrant jasmine rice cooked in chicken fat, I can't think of a more perfect meal. Actually scratch that -- add a side of fried chicken skins and you've got a perfect meal. The menu is pared down (only four menu items), affordable and everything they serve is guaranteed to be absolutely delicious. I dare you to find a better value in San Francisco. read more

I would like to preface this by saying that my coworkers really like Rooster and Rice, but unfortunately I do not. The concept here is poached chicken with a dipping sauce served on a bed of rice and chicken broth. My fundamental problem with this meal is that the rice was the most flavorful part of the dish! The poached chicken must have been poached in water as it was flavorless, which the ginger scallion mixture could not adequately lift in taste unlike your traditional Chinese chicken served in this manner. The cucumber were also just simply cut peeled and nothing more, contributing to this lackluster note. read more

I work in the area and love Thai chicken rice, so really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, the food is extremely inconsistent and oftentimes dissapointing. I've gotten chicken scraps (4-5 pieces total of leftover cuts), cold soup, gummy rice (inedible), large leftover bones, and wrong sauces. The saving grace here is their (homemade?) habenero spicy sauce, which really packs a punch. read more

The food is good, but there are a couple of things that really annoy me about this business. 1. The tipping options on the ordering kiosk don't give "No Tip" as an option. You have to know your go to "Other", then enter 0. If you press Continue from the main tip screen without choosing an option, expecting that means you chose not to tip, a default tip amount is applied. Totally shady! 2. Portions are very inconsistent. I like The Riceless. But sometimes the plate is 2/3 vegetable, while other times more than 1/2 chicken. 3. Small gripe. Their website is often not working right. By that I mean that menu offerings available on the kiosk in store, like what type of chicken (breast or thigh), aren't available on the website. I still eat here, but these things bug me every time I do. read more

Its fine. I've been here many times over the last couple of years and If you are really craving some Hainanese chicken and rice / Khao man gai, then this hits the spot. Caveats: - its pricey as all heck. - there are two locations, this one is better. They actually sell fried chicken skin here. - You'll want to pay the extra $$ for the egg, but I honestly don't think it makes the taste any better. Just extra protein. Sauce is good though chicken is moist. And the napkins are of nice quality. haha. read more

I am sooooooo tilt by this location. I ordered DoorDash for 3 original rice and 2 chicken porridge because we have 5 PEOPLE THAT NEED TO EAT LUNCH!!!! They run out the chicken porridge ( it is total understandable) but they changed my two porridge orders to freaking Mango pudding without calling, texting or anything!!!!!! Can you imaging you and your friends are starving and only three of them got food and 2 of them (include me because I ordered it) have to eat pudding and fake smile and telling them "oh it is totally fine I'm not hungry at all" I have never been this mad for a year!!! I don't understand why there was a line for this place. I mean it's poached chicken and rice. I'm also not a chicken off the bone guy, so I wasn't super thrilled to see how sparse the menu was. Literally four menu items and a few sides. I came here with a group, so I couldn't bail once I saw the menu. I ended up getting the Tofu option which was ok. Organic tofu, brown rice and seasonal veggies. The seasonal veggies was broccoli, are you serious? I did get an egg on top, which sort of saved the meal, but not enough for me to come back. For our weekly office lunch, I decided to get part one from Rooster & Rice. Our delivery order arrived on Friday, June 8th around 12:15pm via Caviar. I got The Original: Breast and thigh with skin, poached organic Mary's chicken over fragrant jasmine chicken rice, garnished with cucumber and cilantro, Served with a fresh chili, ginger, garlic, soybean sauce, and a side of chicken broth ($11.95). One of my favorite preparations of chicken is the Chinese style poached chicken, so I was excited to try this. The chicken was tender and moist. The sauce super flavorful. The rice also had a nice savory note as I believe it was cooked in chicken stock. The soup was clean and refreshing. I've had this dish at a popular spot in Portland, so I was missing the chilis they gave us with that meal. Added a nice spice which I wish I had. Great spot for Thai style chicken and rice. (Though a lot of people in my office thought this was too real. But they only really eat American Asian food.) I do adore a good khao man gai. read more

TIME: TUESDAY @11:30am SEATING: there's some communal seating indoors and some tables outdoors. I'm so glad I planned for an early lunch (they open at 11am) because by the time it was noon, a line was formed. I came at 11:30am and there was no line! Since it was my first time, I thought I go for: THE ORIGINAL - $11.95 Breast and Thigh with skin, jasmine white rice. Poached, organic chicken over fragrant chicken rice, garnished with cucumber and cilantro. Served with a fresh chili, ginger, garlic and soybean sauce and a side of chicken broth. They also have slices you can add: - Thai Sriracha - sweet and mild. Goes so well with the chicken and rice! - Habanero - didn't try it but I'm sure it's very spicy. The chicken was tender and I loved the thigh (dark meat). I love my food rich so I enjoyed all the skin that came with it! The chicken rice was soft and everything I want in white rice--and there was a good amount of it! As for the soybean sauce it comes with, although I don't like ginger, it's not terribly gingery. There's some peanuts in em! This sauce is good if you want your food saltier, but I prefer the Thai Sriracha! If you don't stuff yourself, you can turn this into 2 small meals--which is actually the portion we should be eating, hehe. For the quality and amount you get in San Francisco, the price really isn't bad. This place keeps it simple with simple food that tastes pretty darn good! Simplicity is key at Rooster & Rice. The incredibly minimal menu specializes in Khao Mun Gai, poached chicken on top of jasmine rice. At first glance, that might not sound all that sexy, but trust me, it's sexy! A line out the door on a Tuesday afternoon took around 10 minutes to get up to the front. The tiny space was packed with locals mostly ordering take out, but with lots of options to dine outdoors why take it back to the office? The Original - Poached, organic chicken over fragrant chicken rice, garnished with cucumber and cilantro. Served with a fresh chili, ginger, garlic and soybean sauce and a side of chicken broth. I amped the flavors up to 11 by dousing the chicken in habanero sauce. Score! Again, poached chicken isn't necessarily the girl next door, if you will. However, each ingredient is prepared carefully and executed well. For $11.95 I really can't complain about the portion size for the price. But I'll admit I could've used an XL portion! It does get a little crazy inside, especially when folks don't listen for their numbers to be called, then it backs up the operation. For those looking for something extra, order a freshly cracked coconut for your pleasure! Rooster & Rice hits the nail on the head for a reliable, affordable and relatively healthy lunch. read more

I came here for the first time 2 weeks ago and I've been craving it ever since, so I got R&R again for lunch today. I'm on a low carb diet but I ate the entire bowl of rice because it's just too good! Rooster & Rice is a super simple, warm meal that makes you feel at home. Plus you feel good about yourself afterwards because poached chicken and rice are healthy! They have the most flavorful rice I've ever had and the ginger soy sauce is AMAZING. I usually get a variation of The Original with skinless dark thigh meat. The little cup of chicken broth is a nice touch too. Lines get long around lunchtime so come a little earlier/later. It's also slightly more expensive than it should be, but it's worth to me. read more

Very solid place for Hainan chicken and rice. Came in during lunch and got the Original with an added egg for an extra $2. It did add a nice twist to the meal but is not worth the up-charge. The food came out fairly fast, there were tables present, and it was super nice outside which is rare for SF lately. The rice was cooked perfectly, chicken was delicious, and broth was nice and warm. Ask for some of that spicy sauce to kick up your meal. Knocking off a star because of the price. Sure SF food is expensive in general, but this is just chicken and rice. It should not ending up costing ~$15. read more

Rooster & Rice is so simple but flavorful at the same time. Khao Mun Gai is a fave Thai dish of mine so after trying Chick'N Rice in the East Bay I knew I needed to try this SF staple. This location is great too because it's a a newly updated plaza with a fountain and plenty of seating for your meal. The location itself is quite small so come early to avoid the rush or you'll be part of the large mass waiting for their order to be called. For ~14 w/tax you can get yourself a whole breast and thigh, seasoned jasmine rice, cup of chicken broth, and their delicious chili, ginger, garlic and soybean sauce. The chicken is moist and the sauce was killer. You can definitely see all the ingredients they use in the sauce and it adds so much flavor to the chicken. What I liked about R&R compared to C&R is that the rice is flavored a little more. While C&R's rice tasted more like it was cooked in the chicken broth/fat, R&R tasted more garlicky - at least for me. I thought the meal was delicious and it was enough for two meals for me, however I think that the price is on the steep side for what it is. read more

Chicken and rice is one of my favorite comfort food dishes! While Rooster and Rice doesn't quite measure up to my favorite spot, Nong's Khao Mun Gai in Portland, they're still pretty good and one of the best quick and satisfying lunches you can get in the area. For around $12, a meal here isn't cheap, but on par with downtown prices. There are only 4 items on the menu, which basically break down to the following: 1) The Original = Chicken + white rice 2) The Marina = Chicken + brown rice 3) The Salad = Chicken + salad 4) The Vegetarian = Tofu + veggies + brown rice The Original, or khao mun gai (the Thai version of Hainanese chicken rice), comes with poached chicken, jasmine rice cooked in chicken broth, sliced cucumbers, a cup of chicken broth, and a delicious sauce made with chili, ginger, garlic, and soybeans. They should really bottle this up and sell it in the shop! Sometimes the chicken isn't very moist, but when you pour the sauce on it, all is forgiven. A line often snakes out the door during peak lunch hours, but at off hours the wait is short! read more

I can't believe I've been here so many times and haven't written a review yet! This is one of my go-to lunch places because it's so delicious and healthy. It's just chicken and rice (+ a few cucumbers and cilantro), but they somehow make it taste amazing. I usually get The Original, but the options only get healthier from there, with The Paleo being the healthiest. The rice is unbelievable, and I have no idea how they season it so well but it's probably my favorite part of the meal. The chicken always tastes fresh and tender, and the broth that the meal comes with is the perfect addition (especially on a cold day or if you're sick). Definitely add their habanero sauce if you're a fan of spicy food! That and the ginger soy sauce it comes with go really well together. There's always a line at lunch, so come before 12 or after 1 if you don't want to wait very long. My coworkers and I decided to try out Rooster & Rice because we've heard that it compares to Nong's Khao Man Gai in Portland. After having Nong's, I guess my expectations were a little high because Rooster & Rice's chicken and rice was just okaaayy. I ordered the Paleo with all dark meat. The paleo comes with seasonal veggies instead of rice, and mine came with broccoli. I was glad to see they had sriracha and habanero sauce to fill up in the restaurant. Though I ordered dark meat, some of my chicken pieces were dry. However I did like the sauce, and I wished that I had added an egg after I saw my coworkers poached egg in her order! The sauce was really flavorful and had a small kick. I think the soup was chicken broth and it was pretty good. It was a good lunch and i'd give it 3.5 stars, but at the end of the day, you're paying upwards of $12 to eat chicken and rice... Not worth it in my opinion since there are better things you can get for $12, but I would go again since it's rather healthy or if my coworkers wanted to go! read more

I recently visited San Francisco for work and one day I found myself hungry with nowhere in particular to eat for lunch. A group of work buddies and I decided to explore the neighborhood around the office and we eventually found ourselves at Rice & Rooster. It was the twelve o'clock lunch rush so the place was extremely busy and there was a really long line. The way it works - You wait in line to place your order, place your order and pay at the register. From there you wait for your meal to be called out and then enjoy! For the size of the place and the huge amount of people visiting for lunch, it was pretty cramped. Thank goodness I didn't have to wait to long. My group and I were in and out in of there in roughly twenty minutes or so. We then meandered back to the office to eat, it was way to busy to sit down and enjoy it in house. When it comes to the food, I ordered The Vegetarian and I added egg to it. The seasonal veggies were broccoli and cucumber, which was excellent. I only wish there was more of it! The tofu was soft and the rice was pretty basic. I wasn't a huge fan of the broth, as there wasn't a lot of flavor. The fresh herbs were a great touch and the hot sauce was a fantastic pack of heat. I'm so glad I added the egg! It gave it a wonderful consistency and just the richness I was looking for in such a healthy meal. A friend had, a week prior, stumbled upon an ad informing us that a Netflix reality show celebrity was promoting their new canned beverage at this Rooster & Rice location the following Thursday. Expecting adventure, I gleefully stepped out of work and arrived at this Rooster & Rice with said friend. The meet-n-greet itself was novel and fun and silly. I had a ball of a time. The promoted drink, which I believe they now sell, was decent (tip: do not drink on an empty stomach). The actual Rooster & Rice food, mandatory to order, was dry and unflavorful. The store manager was manning the door and was confusingly condescending. I would've taken it personally but it actually seemed quite indiscriminate (props to him) -- he was unnecessarily curt and patronizing to both the customers in line (the line was the same whether people were there for the event or not, confusingly) and poor food delivery people who wanted to ask where to pick up orders. Okay price for hainan chicken, but everything was pretty spot on in terms of quality and quantity. I got the original which came with chicken, rice, and a bowl of soup. The chicken was juicy and tender, and went well with the soy sauce they provided. It in itself didn't taste like anything, but that's where the sauce comes into play I guess. The chicken broth really hit the spot and completed the meal - it was hot, rich, and flavorful. read more

The stroller was locked at the time, and if I had not stepped in quickly to stop him and unlock it, it could have been damaged. Later, because the restaurant was extremely loud and our baby started crying, we wanted to get a toy from the stroller to comfort our child. At first, the same host refused and again physically blocked my wife. Only after we repeatedly asked were we finally allowed to retrieve the toy from our own stroller. After we sat down and were preparing to order, our baby was still crying because the noise level inside the restaurant was extremely high. A female server, who I believe was named Katie, made us feel extremely uncomfortable, unwelcome, and singled out. She first appeared to whisper with the host while looking at us, which made us feel judged and disrespected. Then, in front of us, she told my wife to take our crying baby outside. I questioned why we were being targeted when the restaurant itself was already very loud, with many guests speaking loudly around us. She claimed this was the restaurant's "policy," but when I asked to see the policy, she could not provide it. What made the situation even worse was the attitude. Instead of showing basic empathy or professionalism toward a family with a baby, some staff members were dismissive, arrogant, and treated us in a way that made us feel discriminated against, humiliated, and unwelcome as a family with a baby. I have never experienced this kind of service at a restaurant before, especially not at a restaurant with Michelin-level pricing and expectations. To be fair, the Asian server who later took our order was polite and professional. However, by that point, the overall experience had already been ruined. The food itself was only average in my opinion and did not feel worth the nearly $200 we spent for two people. It definitely did not meet the standard I would expect from a Michelin-recognized restaurant. I will not return, and I would strongly caution families with babies or young children to think twice before dining here. I believe now they own more than 6 different dumpling places around the bay including Dumpling Story and Dumpling Hour. My partner and I loved this location when it first opened. But now it seemed to have gone down in quality. Expect a wait if you want to come here, but the line does move fast. We ordered the pan fried pork bao, pork and chives dumplings, pigs ears appetizer, and the hot and sour soup. The pork and chives dumpling was our favorite, the skin had a good chew and the flavorful filling to skin ratio was great. However the rest of the order was disappointing. The pan fried pork bao was not very hot, and the fried skin was not crispy and a bit doughy. Kind of like it's been sitting out awhile and there weren't much juice inside. The pigs ear dish doesn't taste properly cooked, it has a bit more funk than I liked, plus it was cut really sloppily. Overall was not a bad experience, but for the price and the waiting you could really get better dumplings at one of their other locations. You'll find better restaurant ambiance than this one which is usually super busy and majority outside seating.

The restaurant filled up quickly, but despite how busy it got, the service was still great. Our group of five shared a mimosa pitcher, which was perfect for the table. I ordered the Two Eggs Any Style with Hickory Smoked Beef Bacon and added a waffle on the side. Unfortunately, the waffle never came out, but honestly, it wasn't a big deal since everything else was great. Overall, we had a really good experience and would definitely come back!

The gentleman employee was especially attentive to assisting the disabled member of our group, even helping her stand and get around. Even if the restaurant is full, if you're getting drinks only you can usually find a spot quickly. I did go once for food, although I don't remember what I had, but the Irish coffee is unforgettable. The vibes inside feel historic and cozy, a great spot worth visiting
