We were in the area and decided to give it a go for lunch. Rooster Cafe is a great little unassuming place that serves up some great food and good vibes. It's one of the places the locals know. The drill is you order at the counter, they give you a number on a stick, and they bring the food to your table when your food is ready. It works. Breakfast is served all day, but I chose the tuna sandwich served with fries. The sandwich was very good. I wanted something light, and it did the trick. The fries were OK, but that's true of a lot of places. No alcohol is served if that matters to you. Pro tip: There are lots of other places for day drinking in Costa Mesa. If you're looking for a good local place, I mean a real neighborhood place with honest good food and great service, you need to come here. Places like this deserve our support. It's not just the food, it's the people who work here. Honest, kind human beings... doesn't seem like too much to ask but rare these days. I'm talking about Dallas who takes care of front of the house, and Sacramento who commands back of the house. I stopped by to kill time because they're located behind the tire place where I was going to get a new tire. Knew nothing about this place. Since I only had 50 mins to kill and not hungry, just wanted a coffee and something tiny. There's nothing on the menu that's small. Dallas understood what I needed and put in an order for 1 pancake. Most places wouldn't bother to accommodate outside of what's offered. Then I noticed they have a special of chorizo tacos with fixings that sounds great but I was not hungry enough or have the time. If you have a dairy allergy or you're lactose intolerant, this isn't the place for you. Most of the food items have dairy in it, they even put dairy in their eggs for some reason. When I asked for my eggs without butter, they sort of scoffed at me like I was crazy to not want extra cholesterol in my eggs. Overall this place isn't bad, but it also isn't special. They have a disgusting amount of cooked potatoes sitting above the flat top just waiting to be reheated for customers. While I'm sure this is commonplace in the food industry, it's pretty off-putting when you have an open kitchen and all of the customers can see it. This was one of the more unfortunately bad breakfast places we went to. The customer service was poor and the food was mid. There weren't many tables inside and we found ourselves eating in the cold because of the size of the interior of the restaurant. This has a more dive type feel (which is what we would prefer), but there were too many other negatives to the place to have us ever return. read more

What a hip, hopping little breakfast/lunch joint this is, next to the Tangier Barbershop and the Tin Lizzie Saloon, and across the street from the Anti-Mall. I came into the cafe late morning on a Friday (before a visit to OCMA), and I was lucky to have found a table...don't people have to work anymore? (Jk) The bald counter guy is VERY fit/fine/hot (whatever the right word is; i'm old enough to be his mother), but he was of little help choosing what to get. However, what we did settle on (the breakfast tacos, with home-fries on the side) was really quite good and home-made tasting, if spicy af. There is designated street parking, but the spots fill up quickly. I found a place at the end of the cul-de-sac, and my friend parked on the (quiet) traffic circle. Hubby managed to finish half. I ordered the waffle with bananas and strawberries and a side of hashbrowns. Both were tasty and filling. The cafe seats 25 inside: 3 seats at counter, 3 four tops, 5 two tops. Drinks are self serve except for coffee. Unpretentious home cooking at great prices especially for the OC. So we ordered around brunch prime time and the wait time was supposedly 45 minutes. So bf and I killed some time to go across the street to the LAB and CAMP to find some coffee! Also checked out a few stores and thought our order should be ready by now, so we headed back. The food was pretty delicious though I have to admit. A lot of people seem to order the huevos rancheros, so I was curious to try. The egg, tortilla, avocado, and especially the cheese were all really nice. My bf ordered a breakfast burrito and he said it was pretty standard so I assumed it was good too? Came here on a Sunday for brunch around noon. It was busy but good flow of customers leaving and dining in so there was always an open table. You order at the cashier and then sit down. My husband got their breakfast burrito and enjoyed it. It was smaller than we thought but still filling and delicious. I got the chicken Parmesan sandwich with fries and it was SO SO GOOD. We waited probably 20-25 mins total for my dish to come out. My husband's burrito came out probably 15 mins after we ordered and mine took some time (I think they forgot honestly) but the employees were kind and would check on it for us. Even thought there was a delay, the sandwich was amazing and worth waiting. Pricing for the sandwich was pretty fair given the quality and quantity. The burrito was good but we felt it was overpriced since it was small compared to other restaurants who charge the same. My friend and I were stopping at America's tires and happened to see people eating and decided to check it out.
