My family was up early; wanted to head out of South Padre before the traffic. I started looking on Yelp for breakfast spots around Harlingen. The usual national chains showed up; noticed Rooster's and hit the directions button. My kid is named Rooster! Rooster is literally tattooed on my neck! Didn't exactly point that out to the staff but we did tell them we had a Rooster dining at the table. Drinks and food ordered. Nice staff and homey interior. In the men's bathroom, the small window was wide open to provide air. I'm being generous with the star rating because my Biscuits and Gravy wasn't that good. Super tough biscuits that didn't even get absorb the cream gravy. Hash browns were too crispy; one of my over easy eggs was well done while the other was fine. I think I should have stuck closer to border food as my GF's Barbacoa plate was better fare. Pancakes from mom's plate were nice and Rooster's Chicken and Waffles stole the show in presentation and flavor. Ok, so maybe it was an off biscuit day. Try it before you go to Dennys! read more

I've eaten here a few times. The lunch is good, but breakfast, needs work. Staff is nice, although it does appear like a new group. It's inconsistent and for the prices I probably won't return. Sorry to give a bad review, but there are better mom and pop places around here read more

Nice clean place. No sound dampening so when it gets crowded it's loud. I had Sarah's special with grits and bacon . The bacon was just crumbs. The grits were tasteless and watery. The pancake were good the eggs were under and over cooked. How is that possible? The coffee was weak but okay. They don't serve butter but margarine. Husband had a cowboy omelet with beans and Hashbrowns and toast. They forgot the toast. No we asked the brought it. He said the refried beans were okay. Not a fan. Went about 2pm after lunch rush. Have heard people talk about their breakfast so we wanted to try. It is a cafe with cafe atmosphere, which is OK. Ordered Shrimp tacos, $16.99 and a chicken taco salad, $8.99. Food was bland and not worth the price. Could have gone to Stephanos for better tasting food for the same or lower $. This family owned restaurant is very unique. It is located between Harlingen & La Feria in South Texas on Business 83. I have been going there for a while & they do not disappoint. Their home cooking is fantastic. This is a local homey flavor cafe with traditional country cooking. They have two sizes of flour tortillas...trust me, the small can be enough for most people. They serve Mexican & American country breakfasts all day. You'll find the migas plate, chorizo & egg, spam & egg, bacon, beans, weenie, papas (potato) & eggs.....pick your filler. I've had all of these but every now & then, I get a craving for something that can be eaten as an appetizer, a meal, or for breakfast....the southern fried bacon! Highly recommended if you love bacon! It is served with white gravy - - DELICIOUS! If you want lunch or dinner, they have the traditional Mexican plates along with the favorite chicken fried steak, and the popular pork chops. Although the plates are traditional Mexican, everything is made to order. The chops are thick. You get two of them. The "hen" portion is only one - either grilled or fried. They come smothered in brown gravy with onions.....Each plate comes with sides and bread. The Friday feature is shrimp or fish plate. You can also do a combo of both. They are battered in corn meal - but I opt to have them battered in flour & deep fried...sometimes grilled - either way - great taste.... The weekends are always packed. Lots of families enjoy their barbacoa and menudo. They have a combo that is very popular. The menudo is clean & the barbacoa is meaty. The tortillas - flour & corn are homemade. The chips and salsa are fantastic - just enough touch of garlic. It is not spicy, although they do have spicy sauces. They serve iced tea - sweet and unsweet, sodas, including some Mexican sodas. Juice and milk are also available. This is not fast food. It will take time to prepare freshness. I highly recommend anything on the menu. The service was nice. The ladies were willing to accommodate my quirky friend's request. The food was okay, but I must explain that we were on a restricted diet so could only eat particular foods. My concern was the mashed beans they were a bit blah, no seasoning. We ordered tostadas as well and the beans were to watered down so our tostadas was watered down as well. I love fried pickles these were okay.... That's the negative everything else was great!!! We couldn't eat meat so we had onion rings! Yum! My favorite were the mushrooms! I'm sure if we go back when we can eat meat it will be a better experience. The ambiance was typical Texas-Mex no biggie. Nothing to make you go, "Wow!" It's a cute family diner/restaurant and I'm willing to try it again when I can. read more

my wife and i were so impressed with this little diamond - in - the - rough. When i first tasted the home made salsa, i knew this cafe would be exceptional. I wasn't wrong! I ordered the grilled fish and my wife ordered the fajita tacos. The fajitas were very tender and seasoned perfectly. The service was great, and the fish was terrific. There was at least 8 very tasty pieces of fish with tartar sauce, salad, rice and fries. I honestly couldn't finish it all. i've recommended it to family as well as many friends! I have been going to Roosters since they opened and I highly recommend stopping by for some good home#cooked, southern food. A coffee and taco in the morning to start the day, chicken fried steak for lunch/ dinner is pure deliciousness!! I do not recommend Rooster's Country Café. Found several egg shells in my egg and it was just disregarded by two of the waiters. Their breakfast had no flavor. I've given this place several chances. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more
