I've been three times since Root and Bone opened. The first time, shortly after opening my wife and I had a great experience. Unfortunately the last two time we've had a not so great experience. The renovations were thought through to a certain extent. The noise factor makes it quite hard to carry on a simple conversation; for there's nothing in the open room to absorb sound. The tables are situated too close to each other, making it hard to get in and out without bumping into the table next to you. And servers bringing food to a table without any hair restraints is totally unacceptable, quite disgusting to say the least. Food was mediocre - NC trout was a small filet skin side up, with a few veggies. Shrimp & Grits quite basic and the Iceberg Wedge still had the core attached to it. We started with Grandma Daisy's Angel Biscuits, which were absolutely delicious. Who needs butter when you have chicken jus in which to dip that biscuit. Great way to start. My husband and I love fried chicken, and Root and Bone ranks at the top for the crunchy, but not heavy coating, and the moist chicken inside. Frying chicken takes time, but it is worth the wait. Too often, when you go to a restaurant you have chicken that was cooked earlier and kept warm. Not at Root and Bone, they cook it to perfection while you wait. As soon as I saw "stone-ground Edisto Island grits" on the menu. I had to have them. First, they are excellent grits, but add a topping of melted pimento cheese, and you are in for a glorious treat. These grits might just make a non-grit lover change their minds. However, you will have to come to Root and Bone to find them. Root and Bone is a little pricey, but is worth it. The chefs have created a great menu with well-prepared and tasty food. The setting tells you that this place is special. The staff let's you know that you are appreciated. Whether you are looking for a place to celebrate a special event or just enjoy a lazy Saturday lunch, Root and Bone is waiting for you. We are already planning our next visit. read more

My wife and I had our first dinner at R&B tonight, and it was fabulous! The beet tartare was really tasty, as was the Southern caprese with peaches and pimento cheese. I had the trout, and wife had the meatloaf; trout was served with carrots and crab risotto, meatloaf with asparagus and mashed potatoes. Both dishes were excellent. Topped this off with a shared banana pudding creme brulee (YUM!), and took home a fabulous celvet chocolate chip cookee. J. Miller (manager) went out of his way to make us feel welcome, and even scheduled our next reservation for us. Our waiter, Justin L., was not intrusive but there when he needed to be, answering all our menu questions patienly! Highly recommend the house Gin and Tonic; unique twist on a classic. The good news is, the food is great! Corn souffle was outstanding, as were both of our dinners, the trout and the spare rib "meatloaf." The bad news is the service was very spotty. Perhaps some traffic mgmt would help. Our server was waiting 4 tables inside, and 2 outside, including one that had 8 diners! It took forever to get our cocktails, and we ran out of water, and were never offered refills. Every other table the server had left a bottle of water except for ours. We ordered dessert, the cake that was the special, and it took at least 20-25 minutes before we got it. The server apologized explaining that the lady doing the plating was backed up. my friend and I had dinner at Root and Bone. She had the burger which was cooked to her liking, it was a nice size burger and it came with homemade chips. it was very good. I had the 1/2 fried chicken and coleslaw. the chicken was lightly breaded and the meat was moist and tender. the coleslaw was creamy and had grapes and pecans on top. This is some of the best food that we have had for quite some time. Jessica was our server. She answered all our question about the menu, she was friendly and a joy to have as our server. She checked on us frequently about food or anything else we needed. great service! ambiance: The restraurant has a bright interior with lots of window. Great concept but I think they are still getting their act together. Their music had the bass way too loud and the thump, thump, thump of the bass was like sitting next to a giant sub woofer. The Caprice salad was excellent but the meatloaf was like a pulled chuck roast shaped into a loaf and then topped with a ketchup/salsa. The accompanying mashed potatoes were bland, not creamy or even vaguely resembling fresh whipped. The banana creme brulee fir desert could have been fabulous, but they topped it with mini vanilla wafers (really? Couldn't they come up with a piece of pastry?) The bananas could have been warm and it would have added so much to the dish. The actual creme brulee tasted as if it sat in the frig too long. Drinks were great and service was outstanding. The menu is creative and the food quality and service are on par with our experiences in larger urban areas known for outstanding restaurants. I'm going to level with you, my people. I didn't realize the conscience-shocking cost of a whole fried chicken and 3 sides, until I picked up my order on the way out of town after packing up my mom's place for the last time. I almost broke down crying all over again when I signed the tab. As I headed South with my dear friend's voice on speaker, I broke off a little piece while it was still hot to see what all the fuss is about. Long story short, 2 hours later I was ruggedly resisting coughing up almost 1/2 a carcass of possibly the best fried chicken I have ever tasted. I could not stop eating this stuff until I literally felt sick. If they made communion wafers out of this chicken skin, churches would be packed and this nation would experience a revival. I don't know how they rendered so perfectly and evenly without drying the inside, but even the parts that were accidentally touched by a sacrilegious lemon slice were -- I am willing to admit - brightened in a way I may duplicate in the privacy of my own home from now on. In the further interest of honesty, I'll say the sides were mid. Whipped potatoes very good but not as great as my Yankee sister-in-law's. Mac & Cheese honestly quite weak. Asparagus with something I couldn't ID except maybe as a peanut romesco? Was quite inventive and nice but $11, yikes. Anyway, I would drive from E TN or Old Fort on icy I40 sandwiched between an oil tanker and an RV for that chicken. They could sell out a master class and teach my generation of Southerners how to make it without raw spots, burns, or a Bojangles receipt. Worst service! Our waiter took at least 10 minutes to come to our table, and acted like we were a total bother to him! Took 40 minutes just to get a salad, then I had to remind him.... AFTER 40 minutes that I had ordered a tea!! And after an hour we had to ask about our food!!!! This was our first visit. We have heard mixed reviews from friends who had eaten at R&B. My biggest disappointment was the level of noise in the bar area...the stone floor & walls did nothing to soften the sounds coming from the cramp table setting. The appetizers were creative and tasty...especially the beet tartare. Unfortunately, the short rib meatloaf and r&b ribs were very dry and lacked true flavor (the sauce was the only thing we tasted). Service was ok, but was disappointed that our waiter forgot to place an order of a couple of sides, and didn't clear the table of dishes when everyone was finished. Maybe it was an off night. We had hopes this would be better than it was. First let me say the service was good and the decor is cute. The dining area is very small and LOUD. The space between the tables is very tight, the chairs are HARD wood and very uncomfortable. There were 4 of us, we all tried something different, and we all found our food very bland and odd. Also there was not much food on the plate to warrant the high pricing for example we ordered the angel biscuits for $8 ... they literally give you just 2 small biscuits! I took my family here and was talking the host. It was my wife and I's 10th anniversary. She gave us the option to sit near the chefs and watch them cook or outside. The host was pointing where we would sit at. As my wife was discussing where to sit. A lady came up and looked my family and I up and down and told the host she had more people coming. When their party was served food already. The lady got the manager told him something and he said there is no seating and there is a 20-30 minute wait. We were just told there was seating from the hostess. After this interaction, the hostess was reluctant on getting my name and phone number to let us know when the table will be ready. I left my phone number with the hostess. We waited outside discussing what happened. This left wife and I very uncomfortable and unwelcomed. We ended up leaving. Not letting them know. To see if they would call. There was no call. In our hearts we know we were discriminated against. It is hard for me to write that. Being people of color we know, because we have been through it. I truly hope this was not the case. I hope the owner reads this to retrain their staff and to handle entitlement from other customers to belittle another customer and. This could have been handled very differently and with professionalism. I can't say anything about their food but their first impression has left a bad taste. read more

I don't know why this yelp review thinks we are from Canada. We've never lived in Canada and are not from there..... very weird. The first time we had dinner at Root and Bone, the fried chicken was good as were the sides and banana creme brulee. The second time we went, we brought another couple with us. There were several things that made the return visit not a good experience. #1 the server spent half of our drink/dinner time talking about her personal life, all the places she has lived, her philosophy of life, etc. She wouldn't stop talking about herself. Our friends were extremely annoyed as it kept us from our own personal conversation. #2 the meal. My meat loaf was dry and tasteless as was the shrimp and grits our friend ordered. #3 I was looking forward to the gooey chocolate dessert, which wasn't the least bit gooey. It was dried out and hard. I had to push really hard on the spoon to get it out of its little pan. Maybe it was overcooked or left over from the day before. I wanted to send it back but didn't want to have that conversation with our server because that would give her another reason to spend all her time talking at us. read more

ive got mixed feelings about this place. the ambience was kinda strange lighting was set at full bright so not very relaxing or soothing for a meal out at a nice restaurant. the server had a beard dont know his name but he was a little curt in his demeanor. towards us. at first i thought he was going to be really nice but not so much when he actually started serving us. i disagree with the chicken that some have said was not so good. ours was delicious probably best ive ever had actually. the corn souflee with sour cream on top was superb loved it. i was disappointed in the iron skillet seared trout and roisotto and the carrots. absolutely NO FLAVOR WHATSOEVER TO THE ENTIRE MEAL. my friend had ordered th fried chicken and it was so much better. wished id ordered that. the salad servings were HUGE we could have EASILY SPLIT ONE. server failed to mention that. and i feel he should have. i had pellegrino sparkling water and it came in huge bottle yet.the top was missing no way one person could drink all of it. he had to get a cork screw to top the lid so i could take it home. tacky . i will go back for the fired chicken and corn souflee but nothing else. read more

Four of us went to Root and Bone on Thursday evening, 8/15/24. Right when we walked in we loved it. The atmosphere is very quaint and cozy. They have a nice bar area too. The staff was friendly and we were seated right away. Our waiter knew the menu well and offered several suggestions. We ordered a bottle of wine and the deviled eggs and biscuits for an appetizer. They were very good. For the entree, two of us ordered the ribeye, one the meatloaf and one the brick chicken. The meals were plated very well which lets us know that the chef does not just cook the food, he/she is also an artist. However, upon eating our food, all of the meals were so salty that some of us couldn't finish them. There had to have been a mistake somewhere along the process but all of the meals were this way.
