It was my time coming to Root Down after hearing a ton about it, and it did not disappoint. I brought my parents here since I know they love fresh vegetarian food. Although you can get meat dishes like steak, lamb and short rib, I really think the veggie dishes shine the most. I loved everything I tried, but my favorites were the sweet potato gnocchi and the carrot Thai soup! I'd recommend making reservations pretty far in advance as this place is popular. Came here on a chill Sunday evening and got a little spot on the patio all to myself. They had a 3-course dinner option for $45, but I decided to try a roasted baby beet salad and small plate (Colombian arepas) instead. I also had the Sherpa chai, iced with almond milk. The menu said it would be super spicy, but it was actually pretty mild tasting and not too sweet. The salad and arepas were amazing. The combination of all the different flavors in the salad with the goat cheese, candied pistachios, sunflower seed pesto and arugula was incredible. The arepas were a warm mountain of gooey cheese, corn arepas, guacamole and sauce. I also had plantains added to mine. Service was great- I didn't have to wait for a seat and they even had heaters and cute lights out on the patio. read more

I thought this place was something special. Now I'm perplexed and taking this experience as a lesson in reviews don't mean a thing. Servers need some more training on how to speak to guests, referring to guests as "friends" every two seconds won't cut the lacking in experience, they need to learn how to operate the heating lamps and they need to have a basic understanding of what a whiskey sour is. Our review Made our reservation same day online, parking was a bit of an issue but handled, immediately greeted and seated. Seating 1 of 2 We decided on sitting outdoors since they mentioned they have heaters, the heaters were so hot, we were burning up/suffocating and it kept turning our cold table water warm. We asked the server if those heating lamps had different levels she said yes, she went from medium to high back to medium and walked away never leaving it on low. Drinks We asked for a whiskey sour, when asked what type of whiskey we said Johnny Walker (they didn't have it), after listening to the list of available whiskeys I realized they had none of the major brands so we asked for her recommendation on anything that's like a whiskey sour and she brought us some banana smelling smoothie tasting whiskey mixed with egg whites drink (for a grown man), he sipped and stopped. Appetizer Our appetizer came, arepas, it was the single and only thing that we truly enjoyed. We love arepas and this was a very different twist on it and we throughly enjoyed. Entrees We ordered the Rockfish Tom Kha and the Bison NY Strip. I couldn't eat the fish as I was burning up from the heat lamps so as soon as the entrees were placed on the table I asked for the check. He ate the bison and ham only off the plate avoided the charred popcorn and fried sunchokes and but enjoyed the meats. Seating 2 of 2 We specifically sat outdoors thinking you could smoke. We took 1-2 hits of our vape and held the smoke inside and the server rushed over stating "SIR, DON'T DO THAT HERE" like it was her personal patio. Finale notes On our way out, I assume the manager was thanking us for coming so I asked him how long our server had been working there, he said about a year, I was giving my two cents on how to better the dining experience from our personal experience pov, anything and everything I said was spoken over and was immediately on the defense, in addition to, never and NOT the servers fault. Excellent food, friendly & professional service, in a beautiful restaurant converted from what appears to have previously been an auto repair garage. We were drawn to this place for the vegetarian & pescatarian options as well as the meat options, since we are omnivores but need some balance for our taste buds & bodies. Yummy cocktails. We had a melon cocktail that tasted lightly of cantaloupe, and a Moscow mule made with gin. We shared two appetizers - the corn cakes, and the shrimp & avocado tacos. Both were delicious. For the entree, We had the Harissa tofu with roasted cauliflower bowl, which was well-prepared, slightly spicy. The tofu was fried and spiced and a bit salty but it balanced well with the rest of the ingredients. We were full but just had to order dessert so we got the raspberry custard, which was a pleasant surprise, comprised of mini brownies, beet soufflé type base, honey gels, raspberries, And earl grey flavored cream. Recently came for a birthday celebration and the only reason this is a four is because of price. I get its farm to table but woof!! Ordered the sticky ribs that were on special and they were cooked to perfection with tons of sauce (my preference). Didn't love the curry sauce that came with the sweet potatoes but I think that's a me thing and not a them thing. Service was speedy and friendly. The beet salad was so amazing. I would recommend to anyone who comes in even if you are not a salad enjoyer. Every flavor and bite was super delicious. The arepas were a little sad They smelled good when first brought to the table but after I started eating I felt confused about them. They weren't bad but just not arepas. I think maybe too many flavors going on or too Americanized. It tasted more like a casserole. Again not entirely bad but not good. The whole time I was eating the salad I just kept saying how good it was. I did not have much to say when eating the arepas. The neighborhood and restaurant inside were very nice. We sat at the high top tables. It was comfortable and the bar stools were not too high compared to the table. I hate when high top tables are like that. Staff was perfect too. In town visiting with friends and we came here for bunch. What a cool vibe this place has! Nice outdoor patio, cool interior, and interesting menu. I enjoyed my Straw-Basil Field drink while others delighted in some tasty bloody marys. We started with an on-special cornbread with a sugar-crusted top. The whipped butter that came with it was delicious. I enjoyed my mushroom & herb omelet -- a surprising bright green pocket of herby, cheesy goodness and some of the best hash browns I've ever had. I swear, I don't know how they cook them (twice air fried? I have no idea!) but I would love every potato I eat for the rest of my life to be that exact texture. WOW. So what I'm saying is... DON'T SLEEP ON THE POTATOES. My partner ordered the zucchini bread french toast, which he enjoyed, but as I recall it wasn't evident it was zucchini bread. Still tasty, though! Sunday brunch was fabulous here! Very friendly staff, clean restaraunt, fun decor and art throughout the building. Fried chicken and biscuit was cooked to perfection, the biscuit was moist, and the collard greens with red Chile sauce tied it all together nicely. My dining companion had the breakfast burrito which he enjoyed, smothered in green chili sauce. For dessert we shared the carrot cake French toast which was divine. Yum!! Started an awesome date night at Root Down before heading over to the DCPA. Started out with drinks and was really impressed, my drink was the Beet Down! Really refreshing and unique to have a drink with a prominent beet flavor! We started our meal with the lamb sliders which were sooo good! Make sure to dip them in the harissa aioli so will not be disappointed! The sweet potato fries on the side were also cooked perfectly. The Diver scallops and the arepa were next and both were wonderful. While the scallops are small each bite is loaded with flavor! I especially loved the fried plantain hidden below the mixed greens and black beans. The Arepa was fried perfectly nice and churchy on the out side with a cheesy center! This is a cute place in the Lohi area with an eclectic menu. The drinks were good, but not great - I got a cranberry martini which was a little odd for the springtime. I loved the carrot ginger soup - this was my favorite item I had. The rest of the food was okay (I ordered the gnocchi). Service was good, but nothing super memorable. Fantastic dinner! Reservations were easy to make via OpenTable, though you should try to book in advance if you want to eat during prime dining hours. For COVID measures, we had our temperatures taken upon arrival and tables were nicely spaced apart. Food-wise, everything was delicious and so beautifully presented. I shared and tried a few dishes: - Beet & Goat Cheese salad - refreshing and tasty starter. I was pleasantly surprised to see different sort of beets (golden and red) in the dish, and enjoyed the mixture. - Colombian Arepas - delicious cheesy corn cakes drizzled with aioli and tomatoes. This was probably my favorite dish of the meal and great for sharing! - Colorado Lamb Burger - nice juicy burger with a side of crispy sweet potato fries. So good. Food is more like 3.5, but we had good service. Our friends were waving non stop about their meal at Root Down Denver airport so we decided to get brunch during our Denver weekend trip. We were told the wait was gonna be 90 minutes for a table of 4. We decided that our game plan was to put our names down and get a "snack" somewhere else. Well, they text us our table were ready 35 minutes later! We started out with a cashew dip with chips and blood orange mimosas. Those were some BEST mimosas I ever had! Our friends had mentioned the cocktails were delicious at the airport location as well. For our entree I got the Huevos Rancheros which comes with pork belly, roasted chili, cotija cheese, tortilla chips and mole hollandaise. It came with some mixed greens and potatoes. I can definitely use more of the pork belly and less of the mole hollandaise though! Hubby got the breakfast burrito and the size was a bit small too! It has chorizo, eggs, cheese, avocado, mole and pico de gallo. Overall we had a nice meal, just that the protein portion of the meal needs to balance out better. Everything was a little outside the box with a unique twist. We decided to order a few of the small plates and try a bit of everything. The Colombia Arepas and the Red Rice Risotto were the group favorites. All the flavors of these dishes worked together so well. Their cocktails were also so unique! Our server was also a gem! Very cool open kitchen concept so we peeped our food as it was coming out. Ambiance is cool and the food is good. Great place for people with allergies. Service was slow. However, paying $30 for a bowl (I got the fried tofu) is insane. It is very overpriced. My friend ordered $35 scallops that came with three scallops. I 100% appreciate businesses who give their servers benefits, pto, etc. but it seems weird as a patron that I'm getting charged another 4% to foot that for the restaurant. The prices are high enough you'd think that would cover it. If it doesn't, bake it into the food price. Just my opinion! We have eaten here 3 times, twice for in restaurant meals and once for takeout. The entire menu is available for takeout orders. Service is excellent and quick, which is great if you are departing Denver International Airport and don't have a lot of time. Very friendly and helpful staff. Don't be turned off by wait lines. They will seat you quickly. We have eaten the Korean spicy duck wings and the beef burger with bacon and a side order of fries. Both are great! They have a good selection of craft beer on tap. Root down is a Denver staple. And a date night staple for us! We've been here many times, but I've somehow not reviewed until now! It's always a joy to dine at Root Down; I love their focus on local ingredients, and their memorable flavors. There's something for everyone! We started with some cocktails. My husband got the spicy froloma- according to him, the perfect amount of spice and the aperol float was a nice touch! I got the season Mule! It was cherry and bourbon. Yum! Not too gingery! Loved it. We split the arepas and the gnocchi to start. The gnocchi was Smokey and flavorful, and the arepas were savory, cheesy, and balanced. And that sauce! Perfection. We split the short rib for our main, and it was perfectly cooked with an Asian-style sauce. It was amazing. We split a Don Draper cocktail with that and for dessert. We were contemplating ordering food dessert too, but we were too stuffed! They all sounded amazing though. To top it all off, the vibe here is awesome. We saw the reviews and had to try this place. The baby beat salad was probably the best salad I've ever had. I had the Pesto Gnocchi and my kids go the Colorado Lamb Burger Sliders. The sliders were great and the gnocchi was good. Our server was awesome as well. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and since we are from Texas my daughter asked for sweet tea which he made from scratch and it came out great. We also tried a banana pudding pie that was delicious. Just a note, we went to eat an early dinner before the baseball game and the restaurant was not busy at all but the parking was difficult to find. Great vibe at the corner of a nondescript street corner off the Highway. A bit of a surprise. Thought the restaurant will be in a different neighborhood. Inside is eclectic. Noise level surprisingly low. Quite spacious and there appears to be a private dinning room. We sat at the bar and chatted with the bar tender who is from Philly and lived in Rome. Wow. Great conversation. Thought there would be more draft beer choices but tonight there were only 4. Wine menu isn't a bible. But would benefit from more diversity. The food: we started with the beets salad, sweet potato fries and the risotto. The salad and risotto had interesting flavors. Some of the best I have had in a while. The fries though were a bit disappointing. My friend had the tofu for entree and I tried the steak. Both were alright but not spectacular. That's a bit disappointing. The tofu was fried too hard.
