I tried the pepper blossom cocktail and I was pleasantly surprised it had the perfect amount of kick to it but not overpowering. We shared multiple dishes and each dish left us anxious for the next. The bloody mimosas were good and you can definitely get your buzz in with this drink. All the dishes were great and the service was great as well. We tried the banana foster dessert dish and it was pretty strong in chocolate flavor. I wouldn't recommend, but I can see why some people would love this dish. I tried the lamb sliders at the airport location and man...this dish was GOOD. The curry aioli pairing with the burger was excellent and the filling material for the meat was moist and cooked perfect. Excellent selection of vegetarian options and the presentation is beautiful too. We came here on our last stop before leaving Denver. It was a Monday night and our waiter, Bill was so friendly and helpful. He never rushed us and gave us excellent service. He allowed us to taste some wines to figure out what we wanted to drink. He also didn't give us recommendations but when we did choose an item off the menu he would describe it and made us feel great about what we had chosen. The evening was beautiful so they had the windows open allowing a nice breeze in. The place was busy but we were able to still have an intimate date night and engage with people around us as we wanted. We started with the Carrott & Thai Red Curry soup. It was delicious. It had small chunks of the apple chutney in it and the flavors were so perfectly balanced. We then had the Cheese and Honeycomb. This was like a cheese plate and it was a good size. The crackers were made of flax seed and quinoa. They were very filling so I tried not to eat too much of them but they paired so well with the blue cheese, cocoa walnuts and honeycomb. They flavor combination was savory and sweet. We then moved onto the Diver Scallops which were three small scallops served with a plantain, brussel sprout and butternut squash hash. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the flavor combinations went so well together. We loved this dish too and were sort of full but we were so impressed we went back for more. We did the Veggie Burgers which came with two small burgers and sweet potato fries. This one was tasty but wasn't as flavorful as some of the other items we had this night. We finished with the Root Down Chai which was delicious and easily the best Chai tea I've had. We also tried the Pumpkin Pie Bread Pudding and the Chocolate Bombe. The Bombe was very rich and had a heavy orange flavor. The Bread Pudding was amazing and very hard to resist. It came with a dollop of brown butter ice cream and all of it was melt in your mouth delicious. An excellent date night spot with amazing flavors. You can get both vegan or meat dishes which makes everybody happy. The drink and dessert selections are amazing too. I'm glad we ended our trip here because it was a great finale! read more

Root down is always a favorite! The Edible Beats team does a killer job no matter which location you happen to be at. Root Down's décor is funky, retro and the food is healthy yet tasty and clearly very pretty to look at. I always have a tendency to go a little beet crazy here! I love this place! From the wonderful waitstaff to the gorgeous food to the breezy outdoor eating space, this literally where I want to spend every summer weeknight. The space is quirky and imaginative while still feeling elegant and comfortable. And as strange as this may sound, I love their toilets! The toilet-sink combo that allows you to save water by using hand wash water to fill the tank is amazing and really shows that Root Down cares about the environment and is conscious of water conservation. Now that I'm done fan-girling over the toilets (ahem), I can say that the service and food here are incredible. Our waiter was very knowledgable about the the menu, personable, and willing to answer our many questions about the area as well. Despite the fact that the place was packed, service was quick and efficient and our table never felt neglected. Armed with a glass of Rose to sip on, I ordered the Carrot and Thai Red Curry and Roasted Baby Beet salad. I absolute loved the freshness of the curry, which was served at the perfect temperature to make it enjoyable even on a warm day. The apple chutney at the bottom was a nice little surprise and went great with the velvety texture of the soup. I enjoyed the beet salad as well, but have to admit I was a little jealous of one of my dining companions' order of the Spring Pea and Carrot salad. Stopped here for dinner last weekend on our way out of town and so glad we did! Love the vibe, very retro. It was definitely packed but we got seated right away. We ordered drinks, I had a coconut lime something drink that was way too good and my boyfriend had a Pinot Noir. I got veggie burger sliders which were SO good and the perfect amount of food after giving one to my boyfriend. He got a fish dish which was also really good. We couldn't help ourselves and got a banana creme brûlée dessert that was seriously unreal. The staff was amazing, they even shut the patio garage door for us when they could tell I was a little chilly. I would totally come back here next time we're in town. I haven't been to RootDown in a while since my office moved from being 3 doors down to 3 miles away, but my boyfriend and I went there for brunch last weekend before the Broncos game - holy crap, I forgot how delicious it was. I had the eggs benedict which were fantastic, and the boykid had the feta cheese sandwich which was INCREDIBLE. Seriously, it was one of the most delicious things I have ever put in my mouth. One bite made me weak in the knees and the world stopped spinning. It was like falling in love, it was that good. The service was decent, the drinks were great (I don't even like bloody mary's and almost downed my boyfriend's it was so good) and the bartender was fabulous - we ended up seeing him out in the Highlands later that night and he made a point to come say hi and see how the game was. I love this place, and going back just reminded me how much I missed it and needed to go back more often. read more

Heard a lot about Root Down so went in with very high expectations. It generally did not disappoint with some of the more unusual taste combinations I've seen. Usually menu descriptions make my mouth water but in many cases I had more of a "huh? - I wonder what that is going to taste like" reaction. I trusted it was going to be good but "Organic Carrot with Red Thai Curry soup with Gala apple-pear chutney & cilantro"? I mean come on. It was delicious by the way. Our group had a mix of the small plates with soups and salads (roasted beet and an asparagus) were fantastic. None of the small plates really blew me away but our resident vegetarian loved everything she had (veggie sliders, carrot gnocchi, sweet potato samosa). The only disappointing thing was one of the dessert items - the Nutella Crepe just didn't cut it. Our service was exceptional! Our waiter was attentive, responsive, and provided great information about the menu. This is a great place to take a foodie to try things they've probably never tried before. read more

I was extremely impressed with my entire experience at Root Down. This was one of the few times out at a restaurant where I was pleased as punch the whole time. The ambiance is stellar, simply a beautiful eclectic place tucked away in the Highlands. The service was perfect; everyone was extremely attentive without being pushy or hovering. Then there was the food. We literally enjoyed everything we ordered that night, even the garnishes were savored. Plus, an extra appetizer that had been made on accident so they decided to surprise us with adding it to our order for free. I've read a few of the previous reviews that bashed the service but let me assure you (and I am a huge service snob), the service has always been impeccable when I have gone. We prefer to eat in the bar area, the dining room / area is a little close quarters for my taste. Great ambiance in the bar for a late night dinner. The food is excellent - you will not be disappointed. Don't forget dessert...I'm a big fan of the bread pudding. The cocktails are a little sweet and it truly depends on who's making them on whether you get your $$ worth but you should at least try one since they are so unique. Holy hell, how did I forget to yelp this place? We went on the raw food night (first Tuesday of the month) and it was fan-freaking-tastic. My husband had a fish dish that was delicious but I opted for the raw, vegan, gluten free four course meal and now I'm hooked. The service was OUTSTANDING and the food was incredible. And as an added bonus- the drinks were equally awesome. We shared a couple of them and damnit - I can only remember el presidente and el yum. The restaurant was packed and the ambiance was nice. Nice low lighting and decor. We did have a slightly cramped table against the wall near the kitchen but not too bad. We will be back for raw food night again - and this time with the kids since I noticed a few families and kids menu while we were there. I hope it's just a yummy. read more

The drinks on the other hand were strong and good which is why I'm giving a three star. Plus the service was great. The waiter was very patient and attentive when we told them it was our first time. On to the food...(Note: Maybe I'm just not a fan of tapas). I didn't really enjoy the Asian pear salad with pomegranate. The dressing was meh and I just didn't like the texture the pomegranates gave (I usually like pomegranates though). The stuffed peppers was also so so. The best par of the meal was probably the lamb sliders and the sweet potato fries. The fries were perfectly crispy and had two different dipping sauces which were curry and cucumber. We love Root Down. We can't wait to go back and already have reservations (which you really need way ahead of time in order to dine in the restaurant part). We love that vegan items are all marked, and that when your dish is delivered it is described. And that the staff never seem imposed or that you, the customer, is in the way. I've ready a lot of the reviews and I definitely get the welcome part. They need to refine their customer service at the entrance. But we have always been welcomed nicely and once seated, whether at the bar or the dining room, the experience gets amazing. We highly recommend sitting at the bar one night for dinner with Kenny the bartender. he rocks. You feel right at home. And he'll make yuo an awesome drinkk. he even makes me a mocktail as I don't drink. The food and the flavors and the textures are all amazing. And remember, I am only talking about the vegan options. I just moved to the neighborhood, and have heard (and read) good things about this place, so I had to go with a girl friend. I got a chuckle out of the "reverse osmosis" drinking water, which is basically a fancy term for "filtered water" but my friend swore it was smoother and clearer tasting than any other filtered water she'd ever had. We sat out on the nice patio facing the street, but it was a bit windy, and the heater lamp post top rattled around precariously close up over my head. Nonetheless, we stayed and risked our heads for the sunny deck. I got the salmon, which took quite a while to come out. I think it was because it was Sunday before Memorial Day, and everyone was getting the $52.80 meal, which seemed to be coming out very fast. Since I ordered off the regular menu, I assume that's why I got delayed. But they were very nice when I asked about the wait, and served me a salmon-gazpacho type of appetizer with chips, as well as fresh bread with some butter that tasted curiously like cheesecake. I cleaned my plate when the entrees came, and it was tasty. I could have eaten more, though. The salmon was nice and moist, and the pickled beets were yummy. My vegan friend is interested in coming back for the raw food menu on Tuesdays. That being said, we had a nice dinner on the patio, and paid about $22 each - no alcohol is why, probably. I have had drinks prepared for me at Root Down that my taste buds beckon for... They are a little on the pricey side that is why I suggested brunch. But I am sure dinner is well worth the price. I'm just to cheap to try it. They have raw food nights and are located in a reclaimed garage. Soooo Eco friendly. They source locally grown veggies and are the uber cool kids table in Denver. They do get a little packed and the patio is the fans favorite. So make reservations ahead of time. Linger is owned by the same great chef and open for dinners. Whenever I have out of town guests, I immediately think to bring them to Root Down. It's just a cool vibe, trendy setting, and a great view of Denver from the East patio. It's too bad that it isn't a secret, though. I struggle to find a reservation most nights and/or weekends, and a drop-in is a big gamble. Brunch is AWESOME but you must, must, must have a reservation. The menu has some really unique offerings, and it seems to change seasonally. Some items are a little overpriced for my taste, but maybe you can find a nice guy to treat you to dinner sometime, eh? If you have the opportunity, sit on the East-facing patio when the weather permits. The servers are all very knowledgeable and well trained. I believe they have some tasty proprietary cocktails, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. The wine menu is pretty great, too. read more

Oh Root Down.. You have my heart. The first time I went to Root Down I was absolutely blown away. I walk into this hip restaurant after getting valet parking to see the GREATEST atmosphere in a restaurant I have ever seen. I kid you not people. Everyone there is upbeat, happy, enjoying their day; workers and customers. Then we get to the food.. What's it called when you combine a little piece of heaven and little piece of world peace? Oh! Absolutely any dish at Root Down! I started with their kale salad, which gave me a whole new respect for salad. The perfect amount of dressing, and crunch in every bite. I absolutely craved this salad and I think I ate it in two bites. SO GOOD! Then there is their Carrot Curry Soup. I know what you're thinking.... what is carrot and curry doing in a soup? Here's the answer... pretty much becoming the most incredible taste you will ever experience. This dish is so incredible, I could talk about it for days. The initial flavor, then the experience of multitudes of different flavors you taste as you consume this gift from the food gods.. I may have to say this is probably the greatest soup I have ever tasted. They have many many choices of dishes, and it's a smaller plate option, so ordering multiple of certain dishes is always an option for larger parties. You definitely are going to want to share these plates as they fill you up a lot faster than they look. They have some of the greatest meatballs I've ever had, along with amazing Devils on Horseback. Just, if you get the chance... order one of everything. Just do it. Everything on the menu is made in house and can be made gluten free, and can be vegetarian if not (i think) vegan. My company took the new analysts to Root Down to celebrate the start of working life (and paying bills and taxes and all that fun fun stuff). It definitely was a cute little place and is exactly how I love my restaurants to be like - not too quiet, perfect for small groups. We had the sweet potato fries which were so divine (and I don't even like sweet potatoes). This dish is similar to eating a superfood in a not-so-healthy version. I think I was pretty much full after having the sweet potato fries. We also had the bacon wrapped starter with gouda cheese. It was good but I definitely preferred the sweet potato fries. Moving on to entrees, the 56hour short rib was highly recommended by the waiter so I went for it. Well, if short ribs were cooked for 56 hours, I would expect a whole lot out of it and this did not disappoint. It was so soft, the meat came off easily, and it melted right in your mouth. The brussel sprout salad was so so so so so good. It was light and fresh and so delicious. The servings were huge and I am sure you can share it with another friend. How can dinner be complete without dessert? We had the vegan chocolate cake, creme brulee, bread pudding, sorbet, flourless chocolate cake, and tea ice cream. Such a spread, I know, and i enjoyed every little bit of it. The flourless chocolate cake was out of this world - I never knew cake could be flourless (fine, I knew, but I never realized it could be that good). The sorbet tasted a little weird with a strange aftertaste. Some people liked it, but it wasn't for me. Bread pudding was warm and fluffy, perfect for a cold Denver winter. My brother and his girlfriend suggested that we make a reservation for Easter brunch. We made our reservation about a month in advance and got a 2pm spot, one of their last available for the day. I'd really like to give this place 4 3/4 stars. I'll give it 5, because the quality of the food almost made us forget the one thing that we thought they could improve upon. - The food was exceptional! My parents are both super good cooks and neither of them rave about food often at all. My mom couldn't stop praising the food. (She was also happy to not have had to cook an Easter meal too.) She and I had the Tacos del Dia (Tacos of the Day), my brother had a burrito. His girlfriend ordered the Root Down house specialty, and I believe my dad had some sort of egg dish. We also ordered a pastry tray and split two desserts. Most tasty meal I've had eating out in a good few months! - Ambiance - When we arrived, the place was packed. My parents are getting older and prefer quiet restaurants, so I wasn't sure what they would think at first. We all liked the hip, artsy vibe and I don't believe any of us had trouble hearing each other once seated. Perfect! - Service - Our waiter was very thoughtful and attentive throughout our meal. (He was obviously working hard and had a full house when we arrived. He'd probably had a full house since his shift began.) However, on packed holidays, the kitchen might need to be managed a bit differently than it was on Easter day. Even though we saw our waiter checking back repeatedly, our food wasn't ready for a full 45 minutes after we ordered it. I understand that staffing might be a challenge on a holiday.
