Food was mediocre, not a lot to choose from, very expensive for what it was. Noisy, open seating. You order and pay at the counter and they bring your food and then you take your dishes and trash to the stations. Some local foods and wines to purchase and some very pricey crafts. Typical Leesburg/DC yuppie vibe. I will say everything was clean. But we won't be back. There's other places with better menus.

It's more like 3 1/2 stars. We've driven by this place many times when heading up north. However, we never stopped in because it wasn't time for a meal. Finally, we were heading into MD and decided to stop in on a Saturday around 3:30 p.m. --- not lunch nor dinner but...lunner. I read that the place gets really busy at dinner time so we timed it to avoid any crowds. Once here, you go to the counter to place your order. Before ordering, we grabbed a 24 oz. bottle of Kutztown root beer to share. I ordered the Roots 657 cheeseburger which consists of: (quoted from their website) "Two hand pressed Roseda beef patties with Cheddar cheese, fried egg, and bacon on a toasted potato bun garnished with LTOP - lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. Each patty weighs a quarter pound before cooking." I asked for for no onions. For my side, I chose French fries. My husband had what was a "special" Corned beef brisket sandwich on marble rye that came with a small side of marinated slaw. We also ordered a side of creamy slaw and we shared all the sides. After ordering, choose a place to sit and when your order is ready, they call your name and bring the food to you. As for the food --- My cheeseburger was huge and the potato bun wasn't strong enough to keep it all together. I ended up using a knife and fork to eat it. The ingredients were good and would have worked well together if it didn't fall apart. As I ate it, I was reminded of our experience years back when we ate at Melt Gourmet Burger---same problem, the burger fell apart and I had to use a knife and fork. My husband's sandwich held up a lot better than mine did. He pronounced it as "okay". Of the two slaws, his favorite was the marinated slaw. I preferred the creamy slaw as the marinated one was too onion forward for me. The Kutztown root beer was just fine, nothing really special. The whole meal cost $42.01---so not a cheap meal at all. The bathrooms were very clean, which we both appreciated. I browsed in their attached store, and yes, things are pricy. For example, a bag of lavender popcorn caught my eye and I was tempted---that is until I saw the price $6.69! Yikes! I did buy a couple of postcards that were unique and cost $1.50 each before tax. The place has a rustic feel to it. For those who like to dine outdoors, they do have a good sized area. Overall, decent ambiance. I must point out that if you are on Route 15 and heading north, it is relatively easy to get in and out of the place. Going south, we wouldn't even try to enter given the constant flow of traffic with not too many breaks in it. We would consider eating here again if the opportunity presents itself.

Loved this place!! Great chicken, BBQ & burgers . Brisket baked beans, corn pudding & Mac and cheese are extra yummy. I ordered the double smoked meat sandwich -- the BBQ sauce was spicy & sweet and just delightful; and the jalapeño cheddar bun was ‍ Will go here again and again. Plenty of local food & crafts in the market; even though it was busy, we found seats for a group. There's a good amount of outdoor seating when it's warmer out. Highly recommend for great quality, taste and overall atmosphere.

The food here is AMAZING! My friend and I were looking for a lunch spot near Lucketts and stumbled across Roots 657. As soon as you walk in you can smell the delicious BBQ cooking in the kitchen. They have a diverse menu with plenty of offerings for everyone. The food was completely homemade and I loved the jalapeño bun with my pulled pork. It wasn't too spicy at all. I also really loved the country store adjacent to the restaurant. The restaurant offered both indoor and outdoor seating and had plenty of parking available. I will definitely be back soon!

Today, visited roots and it has been several months. The food was fresh, although little pricey looks like the prices have gone up you be paying $20-$25 for a male. But organically great.!!!

Food is good but expensive. $14.95 for the pulled pork sandwich, which is about the same price as all the other sandwiches. Oh, I think the brisket sandwich was $18. The sides were fine... Fries were fries. Coleslaw was OK. They were out of the Russian imperial Stout draft. Would've been nice to have them put a sign up saying something to that effect. They had a nice outdoor patio dining area, but for whatever reason the door was locked so once you went outside you could not come back in to get more barbecue sauce, etc. unless somebody got up to open the door for you! I will say the pulled pork was very good. The bun was a jalapeño and cheddar bun, and it was excellent! BF had the smoked turkey sandwich, and it was just an average turkey sandwich. Just for context on the price point... A pulled pork sandwich with one side at Monk's BBQ is $11.95.

We came to Roots after visiting the charming antique shop Lucketts (highlyyy recommend) down the road after being told it was a must stop by a local! And she was definitely right! What's fun is that Roots is a kitchen/ food store as well as restaurant. It feels very pioneer-ish, and almost farmy and the perfect place to take your family to eat. They had what I'd call a refreshing menu- soups, salads, sandwiches and a few other things. Light items. My cobb salad was just fantastic, and surprisingly so big I couldn't finish it. The fried chicken it came with was cooked just perfectly to be with a salad, and overall I was so impressed. A few fun drink and food items were also bought in the visit (oops). They had a pretty good selection of wine and a few other alcohols, as well as things like handmade pasta, pancake mixes, popcorn kernels, and so many more. Roots is easy to miss when driving past but keep an eye out for the big red barn- and don't think twice!

Honestly it's a 3.5 review. I waited a while to write this review. Foods good. Definitely a 4. Good variety. Relatively fast service. But the kicker is it's a tourist trap. Store goods way to expensive. Food 10 to 15 more than worth. Obviously many don't care because they have crowds. Also, portions good size but would benefit from a single burger on menu. All doubles. Likely not coming back.

YUM is the first word that comes to mind with Roots. They have the convenience of a broad selection of grab and go local items and the comfort of a full service restaurant with ample seating indoors and out. They always have a rotation of specials and I adore anything they offer smoked. The half smoked chicken brings me back to the renaissance festivals with less grease, more flavor and the benefits of delicious sides. The Cole slaw was a hit, the ribs were fought over, and the chili (while soupier than usual) was well seasoned and hit the spot. A perfect place to pop in after a long day of antiquing. In addition to the amazing meal, the folks behind the counter couldn't be more helpful. This is a usual spot on our rotation when in town.

After we went antiquing we decided to stop here for a quick bite. We loved the food! I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich, I have to admit I was unimpressed at first. After biting into the sandwich, the turkey was the most juiciest turkey I've ever had. The corn pudding was to die for. My husband got the burger and fries and it was admittedly very good. The atmosphere was very nice too, felt like we were inside a timber barn. We'll be coming back if we're in the area again. read more

The best bean burger I've ever had! Definitely homemade with roasted veggies piled on top. The burger came with hand cut fries... delicious! My husband had the brisket sandwich with mac and cheese. He loved it! It's hard to find something that we both like on a menu but this place has it (meat and veggie)! He also ordered the Crab and Corn soup which was really good, but after we realized it was over 90 degrees outside it was hard to eat too much of the soup! We'd definitely order it again on a cooler day! :) read more

I've driven by this place countless times without realizing what was inside. We finally stopped here yesterday to pick-up dinner and discovered a small market and a counter service restraunt with wine and beer options. My wife and I got the brisket, corn pudding and vinegar coleslaw. Everything was really good, though the brisket was a bit drier than I prefer. I'll definitely stop here again to further explore the menu and beer options. read more

What a great place to stop for lunch!!! I had a smoked turkey sandwich with corn pudding. This place is 2 hours away from my house, but I would still consider a trip out here for lunch. They also have an excelent local brew selection. I can't wait to find an excuse to come here again. read more

The service was very good and they are friendly. Pricing is very fair for the portions. The burgers have potential, unfortunately the cook uses way too much salt. Imagine putting a salt lick on a bun. Probably will not go back. read more

We've gone here twice for lunch. Once when it first opened and once recently. It is impressive to see how much they have grown. The building itself is very well built and decorated nicely. They have different food, drinks, gifts, etc. that you can buy on the left and the restaurant to the right. It's great to look at everything to pass the time while you wait for your food. I got the grilled ham and cheese sandwich with tomato soup. It's the perfect comfort food. The sandwich was really good. The bread it is on is delicious. The bread can either make or break a sandwich and this definitely makes it. The tomato soup was a little too creamy (creamier than the first time) but still good. We also got a gluten free/vegan brownie, which was pretty good. This is definitely pricier than a normal soup and sandwich but not awful. Great place to stop in at. The staff is always very friendly and helpful too. read more

This is one of the best places to get a sandwich. I wish I lived a bit closer to this place. Everything is fresh and I'm convinced everything is homemade. I had their brisket sandwich and it's the best I've had, better than brisket at bbq restaurants. The bark on the brisket was amazing and full of flavor. The portions are huge with lots of burnt ends in my sandwich. Can't wait to go back! read more

Roots is definitely as good as the reviews say. I had been wanting to try it and finally did. I got the cheeseburger and it was perfect. Two fresh thin patties cooked perfectly. The bun was toasted and buttered! The hand cut fries were great as well. My husband had the brisket sandwich which was al so great. The meat was smoked, not cooked in an oven with liquid smoke like so many places around here do. The market inside had some local wines and coffee. It's very low key, order at the counter and they bring it to you. The service was great as well. read more

Holy Crap! How do they justify these prices!?!?! Sure the food is good, but it's no better than food I've had driving south down 95 at a roadside joint where I spend $20 and feed my whole family. This just goes to show that "celebrity" chefs taking root (pun intended) in this area think that their name justifies a market premium. As-good food can be had for lesser prices not too far away. If you're starving and this is the closest place to you, sure, stop by, but be prepared to pay for it. read more

Everyone really liked their food from the brisket to turkey to roots burger. However, the check out was very slow and a bit chaotic. Also, you have to bus your own tables and if you sit outside, it can be tricky. You need a free hand to open the door and the plates they serve on are nice but fairly heavy. There should be an automatic door opener and/or an outdoor busing station if you're expected to clean your own table. read more

No special coffee. Even though this is a cafe with pictures of cappuccinos... Food was good but pricey. I would get to go to take to a picnic, brewery, or winery. Don't go out of your way. read more

We had the special ribs, very good with tender meat. The BLT sandwich was excellent with the thick slices of bacon, and crunchy sourdough bread. The Maryland crab and corn soup was too salty to our taste, and was pricey @ $7/cup. Will be back to try the burgers and other items. read more

6/17/18 Update - Went there around 6pm Sun to give them another shot. They had sold out of everything I wanted to order. No brisket, no turkey, no pulled pork. The green haired server was clearly annoyed as she had to tell everyone that stepped up to order that they were sold out of everything everyone wanted. She gave me my ice cream immediately and I had to hold it while it melted as I waited for my food to be cooked. I really enjoyed the French fries. The Latte was good. The $15 burger however not so much. I wanted the burger for the pickles but there were no pickles and no sauces on the burger. There was less than a teaspoon of shredded lettuce and HALF a strip of bacon that they charge $2 for. Please dont insult my intelligence by serving a $15 burger of this quality. After passing this restaurant many times, we finally stopped in early last year. We are now regulars to this cafeteria style restaurant. Half the restaurant is a shop of local goods (clothes, honey, cards, paintings, beer, and wine). Absolutely excellent BBQ brisket and pork! The grilled cheese with ham is hefty and cooked perfectly. The food was quite good. Brisket sandwich was tasty and my wife's smoked turkey sandwich was moist. Side salads were in plastic containers and we had to pick through the lettuce for icky pieces. Also there was a hair in the brisket. Flies were a bit of a bother as well. read more

Good f-ing food. A bit on the expensive side but I guess you pay for quality ingredients that have an origin that isn't a factory downtown. Limited menu but the choices should suit most. Ordered the ribs because the lady at the counter said they were outstanding. They were absolutely the worst I ever had. They were so fatty and salty that I had to throw them away. I ordered an extra side of macaroni and cheese and it was almost $9. Maybe it was a one time thing but it was a really bad first impression. read more

REALLY enjoy this place. I think it's a great addition to Leesburg. Not a huge selection of food and some of the prices are a bit high, but all in all we've had great experiences every time we've been in. Good sandwiches and soups, mac and cheese, and BBQ. Always friendly service, and I enjoy browsing the shopping area while we wait for our food. A great stop before/after a winery or some shopping at Lucketts! read more

This is a brand new establishment and they are getting the issues worked out. The food is very good, bacon cheeseburger is $12.99. The items for sale aren't bad, lots of different foods and artisans items for sale, they will over time get more local products and fill up a lot of open space. The croissant was very fresh and good. I wish they had fresh jams and jellies to serve with the breakfast bread. I will revisit again and see how things are going. This place has so much potential and I am excited to see it grow. read more

Visited easily on a Saturday morning so it was not too busy yet but I can surely see why it is usually a very busy place. Ordered the pulled pork sandwich with a side of macaroni and cheese. Even when you add barbeque sauce to the sandwhich the great flavors on the meat and slaw still shine through as you are eating. They serve a sauce which is a mixture of vinegar and tomato based that is sure to please any true barbeque lover. I am from North Carolina and have lived in Texas but have never had a sauce that unique. Their house made tomato based sauce is also amazing if you are not an avid barbeque fan. read more

So nice to have a restaurant close to home finally! The space is very nice, and they have some unique items for purchase. The menu, though limited, offers sandwiches, burgers, salads, soups, and a number of tasty sides. Everything we have tried has been good. My favorites are the ham grilled cheese and the onion soup. The iced tea is very good too, just know that the sweet tea is very sweet...I usually get the unsweetened then just add a dash of the sweetened tea. On my last visit, I noticed they are now doing specials each nite of the week..fried chicken, pot pie... glad to see them adding some more options. read more

In my opinion, the best burgers in Leesburg. My personal favorite is the smoked turkey sandwich. The fries and Mac n cheese are amazing as well. The market has plenty of local coffee, beer, and wine. If you're lucky enough you'll visit when they're selling their smoked turkey pot pie read more

I ate here with my family and a friend, and we all loved it! It's so nice inside. The one side has things for sale from local people (woodworkers, pottery, etc) as well as candy and things like that. The other side is the restaurant. The food was so good, and the portions were very generous. They accidentally mixed up our order, but we had barely even pointed it out to them before the manager came over and apologized, reimbursed us for the extra items, and gave us some extra food for free. Phenomenal customer service! And all the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We ended up with the brisket sandwich, onion soup, tomato soup, salad, chicken fingers, fries, Mac & cheese, grilled ham & cheese and corn pudding. It was all VERY good with the exception of the Mac & cheese which just needed some salt. This is a great place, and I look forward to coming back! read more

The food was perfect. The meat was amazing. The vegetables were m. I have nothing funny to say about this... except the Cracker Barrel wishes they were roots 657. It's like Cracker Barrel with quality and better check outs, friendly staff, and a better store. There is literally nothing to say to take anything away from this place, it's like 2002 Angelina Jolie or 1996 Jennifer Anniston. No flaws to speak of... read more

I think it's a great place for studying, reading, or working - comfortable seating, great light, and a menu of beverages and snacks. They clearly have a mission, which I don't know much about, and the the things they sell weren't for me (crosses and Bibles and other Christian themed items), but the cafe was very comfortable.

The cortado I got was okay. It's not something I'd drive to Leesburg for. My friend said the matcha latte is good. The breakfast other people were having looked great. Parking wasn't easy. I had to get past all the new apartment buildings and park at Market Station and walked a block. The bouquet of flowers here look very unique.

In the past, seating was spread throughout the connected house on the property, which made the experience feel relaxed and welcoming. Now, most of those rooms seem to be used for gift‑shop retail space instead. While the shop is lovely, I can't help but feel that expanding indoor dining again would serve customers and the business far better than the retail rooms. People who buy high‑quality, fairly pricey food want a comfortable place to sit and enjoy it. I truly love this place and hope they consider bringing back more indoor seating. It's a gem in Leesburg, and with a few adjustments, it could be even better.

Apparently it's popular, so you either need to go early or luck out. The cream puffs and cookies are great, but I finally got a kouign amann. It's a lovely pastry. The sugar/thin layer of caramel on the top is substantial without being too thick. Just enough to hold and break apart. The laminated dough is nice as well. Not overly buttery, but still light and fluffy.

To drink, my husband ordered a Kirin Light beer while I ordered a glass of plum wine. Some Japanese places fill the glass too high, but here, the portion size was reasonable. I ordered "the poke bowl". I chose salmon for my fish. This bowl consists of "Sushi-grade fish topped with vegetables, mixed with poke sauce over a choice of mixed greens or rice". I chose the rice. Before coming here, I looked up "poke sauce." I found a website called "pokebowlny.com." This is the description they gave: "traditional poke sauce blends soy sauce, sesame oil, and often rice vinegar, along with aromatics like garlic and ginger. This classic combination makes the fish taste fresher, the vegetables more vibrant, and the rice more flavorful." The vegetables in the bowl were kernel corn, seaweed salad, and cucumbers. I really enjoyed having this meal! All the flavors worked well together. I look forward to having it again. Along with the poke bowl, a bowl of miso soup is included. That, too, was quite good, and it came to the table quite warm. My husband ordered "Tuna Don," which consists of "fresh tuna sashimi over rice & vegetables. His entrée came with both miso soup and a small side salad. The bowl had a big slice of radish, some seaweed salad, and the usual shredded daikon. The wasabi was really spicy - he could feel it in his nose and sinus cavity - it'll take your head off. The generous portion of tuna was large with thicker slices than he'd ever seen before.

There are not a lot of choices for resturants in the Lucketts/Lovettsville area unless you drive 30 minutes into the town of Leesburg or go to Frederick, Maryland. I have eaten at this resturant 3 times. The first time was when it was newly open and the third time was today. First time, the staff was friendly, our order arrived correctly, and the food was good. The second time I took my family and none of the orders were delivered to our table correctly. They forgot side items or gave us the wrong ones. Also, the quality of the food was not the same as the first time. A couple of us had upset stomachs after eating. We decided not eat at this resturant again until 3 or 4 months later, May 23. Tonight, it was just my husband and I. They forgot a side item again. The waitress brought it out after I mentioned it. I was amazed at the portion size. The side bowl of cole slaw was not even halfway filled. My husband went up to the counter to ask if this was the portion size for a side we are paying $4.00, two bites and that is being generous. The order taker said yes because of the quality of the ingredients that they use. My husband asked for the manager. The manager was nice and said he had a new person and he messed up the order. He gave my husband another portion of cole slaw and reimbursed us for the $4.00. On top of that, my husband said his brisket on his sandwich was very dry. My hamburger and side of mac and cheese was ok, not exceptional. I understand paying a higher price for quality food if it's worth it. The brisket sandwich is $13.95 and does not come with any side items. You can pay an additional $4.00 if you want a side. My Roots hamburger was also $13.95 with no side. This pricing is beyond ridiculous, especially for the portion sizes. Eventhough the manager was nice and made good on our complaint, we will not eat here again. We'd rather drive a little further to get the service, more menu selections, better quality food, and prices to match the value of the portions and food. read more

My 8 year old daughter and I came into this barbecue establishment today to order dinner for our family. I stood behind another customer while waiting to order. My daughter had to use the restroom and I stepped out of line to take her to the restroom. The older guy at the counter refused to let her use the restroom before we placed our order and paid. I asked again to use the restroom because it was an emergency. Again, he said we would have to pay first! I was disgusted because my husband has patronized this business on several occasions. I walked out of his business IMMEDIATELY because I am not sure how someone can deny routine customers and a CHILD the use of a restroom. My husband has spent hundreds of dollars at this establishment. It was my first time there and NEITHER one of us will be returning. We are both successful black business owners and will NOT be patronizing this establishment again! I saw a previous review where this man did this to another young child as well. Sir, you may want to reconsider how you treat your customers. I wasn't just some "average Joe Blow"! Your cooking maybe ok...but I have enough sense to take my business elsewhere.
