I just went yesterday and had the chicken sandwich and it was a party in my mouth for sure! I haven't been here in a while since the pandemic and there have been such a high turnover of restaurants at the food hall, so I was relieved to see that Roots was still there. I also had a side of fries. Nothing beats this fried chicken sandwich from the massive fried chicken that sticks out beyond the sandwich to the juiciness of it throughout every single bite. The fries are a bit underwhelming. I went during lunch so they were somewhat busy, but after I ordered I just walked around and by the time I came back, my order was completed. It seems a bit pricy for one sandwich, but compared to the rest of the food at the food hall it's definitely a steal and it's worth it for the party that happens in your mouth. I would eat that sandwich anyday! read more

I have to admit I'm a chicken finger snob and these are among the BEST of the best! The breading is oh so perfect and flavorful - not too crunchy, not too soft. It stays on the chicken well. The chicken itself is moist and cooked to order. Their ranch dressing and honey mustard dressing were both fantastic (let's face it, those dressings are not created equal and can be blah depending on the vendor used). UPDATE - I later found out these two dressings are house made. No wonder they are so delicious! The french fries were legit too - can't complain about anything! Legacy Hall was packed on a Saturday night, but we ordered at 8pm with a very small line and hot food was ready within 10 minutes. We drove from McKinney to try this place and WILL be back. Super affordable as well. Highly recommend!! read more

Chef Tiffany Derry, your food tastes just as amazing as it looked on Top Chef! I met Chef Derry on my first visit and she was so cool and kind; she even took a picture with me-- I still shriek with excitement when I think of it! Ok, so I'm a fan of hers, obvi, but I'm also a serious foodie, so I had to check this place out (two times, just to be certain). My dining experience both times was fantastic! Today I ordered the Spicy Bird with fries. The chicken was massive and so full of flavor, I couldn't put it down! This was, hands down, the best chicken sandwich (in taste and presentation) that I have ever had. The fries were a good accompaniment, but the sandwich was the star. I highly recommend trying the Spicy Bird when you visit, and you MUST visit! read more

First things first - the food was decent (we finished everything!) but we had a negative experience due to the cashier. Atmosphere and service is also important , not just the meal. My wife ordered food and waited a while and saw people who ordered after her get their meals. Thinking, she had missed her name being called and seeing a tray waiting, all she asked was "is that my tray." The cashier rolled her eyes and just walked away without saying anything. Just because you are having a bad rush/day does not mean you can be rude to people. If you're at Legacy, we recommend Buttercup Chicken Tenders, or the 2 Taco places, or the Asian cuisine before Roots. read more

Chicken fried in duck fat. Say no more. I have now tried the barnyard salad, the wings, fries and chicken sandwich. All meals have been proper and on point with flavor. I would say that I enjoyed the salad and the chicken sandwich the most. The salad has some really good elements all mixed together. The chicken sandwich stands out and the toppings really give it a diversified crunch. I have had all of the meals through delivery and I have not received any soggy chicken. Well worth the try and worth the coins. Oh the dipping sauces are on point as well. I have tried them all. I only took a pic of the chicken. Listen----I'm from New Orleans and I'm used to eating very well on a regular basis. My grandmother was a French trained chef so I'm used to seriously good food. Making simple food and elevating it is an art and it's been mastered here. The duck fat wings here are so damn good that I don't want regular wings anymore. My partner is already making jokes about me demanding this restaurant when I get pregnant Do yourself a favor and get some of this!!!!!! read more

Situated on a busy court, I specifically selected this place because it is black owned. While standing in line viewing the menu, someone walked past me with this amazing looking sandwich that was piled high, straight out of a Dagwood comic. That is exactly what I end up ordering, along with a side kale salad. The chicken was tasty and I got a generous portion. I wish the sweet potato bun was warm\toasted. Overall it was OK. For me, the star was the kale salad. Fresh and flavorful with a slight crunch. Prices add up. My chicken sandwich did not come with fries or any other side dish. The sandwich was close to $10 solo. I would return and just get a big bowl of kale salad. read more

After watching Chef Tiffany on Tournament of Champions, Beat Bobby Flay, and Bobby Flay's Triple Threat, I was so excited to try her chicken shack. I was not disappointed. My son who hardly eats lunch at 3 strips and fries. My daughter ate 2 strips and she is very picky. As I walked around Legacy Hall trying to find somewhere to sit I was stopped by people asking where this sandwich came from and I heard the comments from people I passed as they gawked at my sandwich. It was the visual equivalent of hearing someone else's sizzling fajitas come out of the kitchen and regretting your foolish decision to order a quesadilla. We really enjoy coming to Legacy Hall even though many of our favorite spots have moved on to other locations, but thankfully Roots Chicken Shak is still here. We tried Roots during the soft opening of Legacy Hall because we are fans of Chef Tiffany Derry after her season of Top Chef. We loved the Duck Fat Fries and the Chicken Wings, but this weekend was the first time I tried the chicken sandwich. First off, customer service is top-notch. The guy at the register was super friendly and very helpful and helped me decide between the Big Bird and the Spicy Bird--I wasn't sure about the kimchi mayo, but he assured me it was the right choice. He advised it would be about 5-6 minutes so we took a step back and watched the kitchen staff. Watching the staff work is awesome; they are all very particular and precise and make sure each item they are making is prepared perfectly. Every sandwich they made was assembled with care, precision, and attention to detail. And they are so detail oriented--they use a blowtorch to melt the cheese onto the fried chicken filet and there is such artistry and skill with how they use the blowtorch. We strolled around to find a seat, saw everyone's sandwich envy as we walked around, and found a spot upstairs. This sandwich was excellent. The kale holds its texture so well despite the melted cheese & kimchi mayo surrounding it and the chicken is perfectly crispy, flavorful, and juicy, and the bun is just the right amount of soft without ending up being soggy. After I finished eating I had to come back and talk to the staff to tell them how amazing that sandwich was. The sandwich as well as the fries, the fried chicken, the wings--everything we have tried here--have been excellent. Whenever we come back to Legacy Hall it will be a hard decision to not just default to coming back to Roots Chicken Shak. read more

Gave Roots another shot because I forgot to get the sandwich the last time I reviewed them. Ordered both of the Original and Spicy Bird sandwiches... CAN YOU SAY AMAZING?!!! The sandwiches are the stars of Roots. That's all I'm ordering every time I go! The flavors and seasonings that I was looking for in the tenders were in these sandwiches!!! OH and suggestion, definitely make Spicy Tenders because that seasoning on that Spicy sandwich...DELISH!!! WELL DONE! The temperature of your food is satisfying. Knowing how fresh your meal is add a bonus to your meal. I will say I wasn't too much a fan of the fries, just nothing special. They chicken was good but don't expect it to have some southern/Cajun taste. read more

I don't know if I received a bad batch but it was flavor less and dry. I ordered the duck fat wing combo and was disappointed. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time because of the reviews. The wings were fried hard with little to no meat because the wings were tiny and the taste of day old grease were overpowering. I let my husband try it and he was not a fan either. The staff were friendly though. I could have had a better lunch at Popeyes for cheaper lol! read more

This place was outstanding. Has a ton of different food options around. Pretty much like a huge food court. Very great atmosphere around. The food is very good. Only thing I'll say is it's pretty slow, although this whole court area was very busy. They told me it'd be a 6 minute wait, but turned into a 20 minute wait, but worth it. Very good! read more

If you value a flavorful sandwich over a tidy one, this spot is for you! Packed with flavor, crunch, fresh greens, tomato, red onion, pickles, and a super soft sweet potato bun, this sandwich leaked all the way down my forearm and left my tray soaked. The spicy chicken sandwich also brought some good heat with its hatch green chilis, pepper jack cheese, and kimchi mayo! I enjoyed the flavor of the sandwich but worried over how much of what was traveling down my wrist and arm might be grease. It wasn't the best setting to cope with such a messy experience (restrooms/sinks were far from available seating making clean-up more challenging as flimsy napkins didn't cut it). With so many options in one building, I'd opt for something different next time. Good food but I'd prefer to avoid an uncomfortable amount of messiness in a such a social setting (unless the whole group is getting messy). read more

I visited here this past Saturday and I must say they did not disappoint! After hearing my boss talk it up so much I had to give it try. The owner was right behind the counter taking orders with the kindest eyes(couldn't see her full face because of the mask but I could tell she was smiling ), warmest greeting, and best customer service. The food was delicious! I got the chicken wings and fries with the sweet tea. To start... The sweet tea... Nothing less than AMAZING! You can see the container it comes out of full of tea, sliced lemons, and mint leaves. The mint gave it a very good flavor without being too overpowering. I would go back for the sweet tea alone. The kool-aid was good too though. The fries were probably the best fries I've ever had. They had just the right amount of salt and I think it was crushed peppercorn. I may be wrong on the peppercorn but whatever it was, it was good! Now, the Chicken Fried in Duck! The chicken wings were cooked to perfection with the right amount of seasoning in every crevice. They came fresh out the grease so they were fresh and hot. What I loved about them was that I could taste all the seasoning but it didn't taste salty. My only warning is that all of their food appears to be made FRESH and straight out the grease so the food is pipping hot and takes a little while to cool. I am not even done eating and i just gotta tell y'all bout this place. #1 T.K gets 10 stars from me.. we ordered the wing basket which consisted of 12 wings. We thought they were perfect but when we sat down she came to our table and said that she had cooked another order for us because she was unhappy with the way they looked. I mean they were perfect in my eyes...lol. meat falling off the bone. But then she brought out the other order in which they were fried to the heavens above. Perfectly golden brown and seasoned to perrrrrfection. AND who doesn't like chicken fried in DUCK FAT!? Fries were amazing. Came with 3 sauces which were yummy. Sweet tea was perfect! Dallas keeps it coming with the new, hip-to-do food courts that aren't just gimmicky. Each stall having it's own vibe and flavor, pun intended. The ancient Chinese were the first to pioneer the duck fat game, and its safe to say Roots has perfected it with their chicken. Totally worth the hype, and to be honest, no sides needed. It's that bomb! The world needs more things fried in duck fat. That's one thing we can all agree on. read more

So sad they forgot the banana pudding in my pick-up order (didn't realize I got home and I LOVE banana pudding), but the chicken sandwiches are pretty good! This was my first time to Legacy Hall for a meeting . I was drawn to so many places . I was overwhelmed . Lol ! And on top of that , there are more floors ! Genius idea ! So , I settled on Roots ! I saw that it was owned by a top chef competitor, so I had to try . Plus , you had me at duck fat . Lol ! Duck AND Chicken? I can work with this ! So , the line was not long , but I waited for a little bit , but it was no big deal . I ordered the strips . You can watch your food being set up like an assembly line ...okay a small one . Lol . The chicken sandwich are amazing I couldn't even eat the whole thing!! The honey mustard and ranch sauce are must to order with your chicken. Omg that banana pudding is heaven!! Its definitely made from scratch and love!!! I never leave review but they deserved an awesome review. Customer service was excellent! I had an issue with my sandwich the food prepare guy took it trashed it and made a fresh one!! He gave no attitude all smiles and apologized several times!! Ordered 12 and then an extra 6 wings to go. Three sauces were included and then got several extra on the side. As always, this place is a gem and the star of Legacy West. The chicken is incredible, they are always consistent with their preparation and they are super friendly and even if there is a wait or they box it up but forget to call it out, they are apologetic and the service minded interaction is great. I have never had anything but exceptional food every time I have visited over many years of both visiting in person and ordering for delivery. It's a true gem offering something more unique and flavorful than most places with their duck fat wings. This is a must try. Thank you for the incredible food. read more

Duck. Fat. Fried. Chicken. Wings! They're crispy, juicy, hot and they give you A LOT of them! Located on the first floor of Legacy Hall, Roots is always busy, a line of at least two or three. You'll either see the wings being placed on a tray, the Big Bird or the Spicy Bird. All of these delectable choices come with a huge pile of duck fat fries. How good does that sound?!?! Now I'm a sauce girl, so when I tried the wings, I dipped them in the Sweet & Spicy BBQ AND the Honey Mustard. Both really good. Let's just say the bone was clean as a whistle. A side note, if you didn't know, this awesome establishment is run by Tiffany Derry, Top Chef alum. Love that show! When we were there, to our surprise, she came out from the kitchen and spoke with me and my friends. Smile a mile wide and she was so sweet, even had a little chit chat with us. Really made our day, so down to Earth and you can tell she stands behind the delicious food that she serves. Trust me when I say it was delicious! read more

Their spicy chicken sandwich is the king of all spicy chicken sandwiches - perfect crunch with all the right juicy pickled fixins. I've come back to Legacy Hall exclusively for that sandwich. Yum!! I finally got to try Roots Chicken Shack. I ordered the wings with fries and hubby got a spicy chicken sandwich. I also ordered their sweet tea. I have to say, this was some of the best tea I've had in quite some time. It was delicious - I'll probably also get tea from here whenever I'm at Legacy Hall. When I asked for my lime - she literally walked back with it IN THE PALM OF HER HAND!!! Three different times she removed food or drinks from our table without asking if we were done with them. She was never apologetic or kind when she made a mistake and really seemed very unaware of the "service" job altogether. My friend and I are overly nice to service people. I still tipped her very well! But the lunch was a disaster from start to finish and NOT the first time experience or birthday lunch I hoped to provide for her. We started with the goat cheese appetizer- it was good as always tho a tad too much garlic. My friend got the chicken melt after asking our server several menu questions and not getting clear answers. And I went with the turkey chili but it was too spicy for me so I took it home. The server asked if I'd like some additional chips to take home with it and never brought them. We have long loved Whiskey Cake and this wasn't a good look at all to have my friend as a returning customer. The server who brought out our appetizers was very lovely- and when she stirred the goat cheese for us and got oil everywhere, including on me, she apologized profusely. Mistakes happen- and her response to it was professional and kind. And THAT is the star I'm giving. She gets the star. The rest would be a very sad zero.
