Worse chicken place I've been to, took a while to get food and they gave my food to someone else. Had to tell the guy he gave my food to someone else, he took the food from the wrong person after she touched it. He was confused and didn't know how to fix it, me and the other person told him several times to add more chicken pieces to the one she touched and give me the food he was going to give to the wrong person. He and his counterpart didn't understand what to do. I get home and these chicken wings were so damn small. I swear they were like baby wings. I am impressed. I went to Roots for the first time and I have to say...this menu is simple, yet elegant. I've never had a chicken sandwich this good in my life. The chicken is crispy, perfectly seasoned, and the spicy version has the right amount of kick. The duck fat fries are awesome. A light crisp that isn't greasy, and doesn't need a drop of ketchup. Surprisingly, the house made sauces are... amazing. You can taste the dill in the ranch dressing, the hot sauce is near perfect, and the honey mustard is life changing (and I despise mustard). But the most impressive item on the menu...the banana pudding. I am still trying to understand how they made it so perfectly, but it's the best banana item I've ever had. I want to give it five stars for the chicken sandwich alone. However, the other dishes brought down the rating, and here is why. The i got the original sandwich, and it came with a dark meat fried patty, which I liked a lot. The kale and the crisp veggies just all went so well together with the sandwich that I have really no complaints about the sandwich itself. I'd like the buns to have been toasted though... they were kind of just taken out if a bag cold. In terms of the wings, they were quite plain. It did not have much seasoning or flavors added to it. I paid extra for the spicy dipping sauce which tasted quite plain as well. The fries were a bit cold and have been sitting under the heat lamp for a while when i got them. Can you say YUMMMMM!! This place has been one of our favorite spots during the Covid-19 experience. The customer service is amazing. Everyone is super nice and friendly. Everything was very fresh and made to order. The portion size is not humongous, but very generous!! We got the chicken sandwich and the duck fat fries! Sooooooo good! But the star is the banana pudding! It's perfect. Just the right amount of banana and super addicting! We also had the catfish sandwich (it is there for limited time but definitely should be on the menu) with the homemade tartar sauce. Soo soo good!! Total was $14.57 Sandwich- pretty good, fried chicken breast comes on a sweet potato bun with kale, pickles, tomatoes, red onion and herb mayo. I enjoyed it but not a sandwich I would necessarily crave and come back for again. Fries - FYI duck fat fries taste no different than any any other fries. I was so excited to try this place yesterday. My homegirl invited me along for the ride so we knew we would give this place a try. Once we arrived there were quite a few people standing around waiting but nothing unusual for a late Sunday afternoon. We placed our order and the customer service was great. Anywho, we finally get our order after I was asked my name at least 3 times. (They call orders by name). My order comes up, and it was missing a banana pudding and I kindly reminded them of that....cause you know I'm starving now. Well after they went through their receipts they figured out they didn't add it to the order. All they could offer me was an "I'm sorry!" Oooook. After I looked puzzled a staff member asked if I wanted to buy one, at that point I said don't worry about it. Then I had to remind them about the kool-aid which they gladly handed over a cup of that. On to the food. The chicken wings were fried beautifully and had great color and nice crispy skin. However it lacked flavor and that was disappointing. The duck fat fries were piping hot and had decent flavor. Pretty salty but not overly salty. Here's the best parts of our meal...the kool-aid my partner in crime could not stop saying how good it was. I was kind of jealous I didn't order a cup but there was no way I was getting in line again. The big bird sandwich was everything I wanted and more. It was full of flavor that made me happy with every bite. It was very very good! Now for the banana pudding, she took one bite and said oh no you've got to have some so she went back to order it. Turns out she explained what happened earlier and they gave us a banana pudding at no charge. That sat well with me because before that I was disappointed with how the mix up was handled. Im a little torn on a rating for this experience. This was our first time to this shop in Legacy Food Hall. Overall the food was good; not great. My wife had the chicken fingers and said they were hot and well cooked but a little bland. I had the spicy bird. Note....I love spicy food. Generally find it not spicy enough. The Spicy bird was SPICY! I did enjoy it though. The odd part to the experience is that we ordered two meals and they put both on a single tray....that also doubles as your plate. This food hall in Plano is incredibly busy and the high prices are just a reality (at least for now). Because of that, it comes down to the quality of the food at these stalls and Roots serves decent food--not the best but not among Legacy's lackluster options either. Roots seems to specialize in fried chicken wings as I see countless people throughout the hall carrying trays and trays of chicken wings. I wanted something that would feel more like a complete lunch so I opted for the spicy fried chicken with a side order of fries. The spicy fried chicken sandwich looked pretty decent. In terms of taste, it was kind of a mixed bag. The sandwich was garnished with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and a mildly spicy jack cheese. All were fine though I would have preferred more lettuce to offset the other ingredients in the sandwich. The bun was decent. While maybe a tad dry, it held up well compared to a lot of the cheap grocery store big brand-esque hamburger buns you will get elsewhere. In terms of the fried chicken, there were some high points. It was crunchy. And the flavor was okay. There was a fair amount of juiciness too. The problem was that they used dark thigh meat. I enjoy dark meat (especially if I am enjoying fried chicken on the bone as a perfectly fried chicken leg always seems like the right way to go). For a sandwich though, I think it hardly works. There is just not enough meat. This makes the fatty parts stick out as well as brings the greasiness of the fried chicken too front and center. The fries were decent. Maybe a tad over salted, but they were crispy and cooked all the way through (unlike the fries at Knife Burger where the fries had a very unpleasant raw center). Service was quick. Roots is not a bad option here though I would definitely order differently on a future visit, and I imagine I will give them another shot down the road. There is a big parking structure at Legacy West, but parking can take a little bit of time to find (like The Grove in LA) during peak times. read more

This chicken is the truth y'all. I got the wings and they were well juicy and seasoned to deliciousness. The duck fat elevates it to a fancy level of southern cuisine. The dipping sauces are housemade and frankly good enough to eat by the spoonful. I got the sweet and spicy bbq and also the honey mustard. Someone here said they thought the chicken was greasy, lemme report that the chicken is JUICY not greasy. When I bit into a hot wing, liquid did run down my hand as well.....but I can confirm that was just super juicy chicken .....goodness... I can confirm that it wasn't grease because I ended up warming a few wings up the next day and there wasn't any more oil than what you would expect with warming up a piece of fried chicken. The family meals they are doing right now are also great. The gumbo is some of the best I ever had. It was full of meat and fresh seafood. Thigh meat but not a lot of seasoning. I didn't like the potato bun that got soggy and broke apart while eating. It has pepper jack cheese and an olives on it which isn't the best combination IMO. Fried Chicken: looks good! Not as seasoned as I would like though. Duck Fat Fries: pretty good but not sure why it's a big deal. Not a sizable amount for the price. Kool-Aid: I was disappointed. When you order kool aid at a Black Owens's restaurant you expect a flavor explosion, but this was not that. I pores it out and got a soft drink.
