Located inside Legacy Hall, on the lower level, Roots is staffed by friendly folks who know how to engage with customers. On a recent visit, I ordered 12 Duck Fat Fried Chicken Wings & Duck Fat Fries. They told me it would take about 10 minutes for my order to be ready so I wandered around a bit and when I came back at that mark my food was indeed ready. When you order the wings, you get the entire wing - not just drums and flats - so 12 pieces for $26 seemed like a fair price to us. The wings were fried to perfection, so the meat easily came off the bone with very little if any "residual meat" not bitten off. The wings don't come sauced and don't have any deep flavor on their own so you will need to rely on their packaged sauces to come through on that. My favorite sauce was their West Indies Hot Sauce. Although I was expecting a bigger kick of heat than it offered, I enjoyed the flavor. The Honey Mustard and Sweet & Spicy BBQ sauces were fine, but nothing revolutionary. The fries, too, were satisfying - they were perfectly crispy but not heavy or greasy. Again, no flavor punch but a good fry, nonetheless. Came here for lunch one day during work. It's in Legacy Hall so a lot of other food options around as well and can get busy for lunch. When I walked up, the person taking my order was very short with me and not friendly at all so was a little worried at that point. I got the chicken strip combo which comes with four chicken strips, fries, a dipping sauce, and a drink. It was around $15 so a decent price for the amount of food. All the food is said to be fried in duck fat. Having cooked with duck fat before, I did not get that flavor coming through at all. This place used to be my favorite fried chicken in town, but it's really gone downhill lately. They've always had spotty service, with standoffish cashiers and frequent minor mistakes on orders, but it was tolerable because their sauces and seasoning were spectacular and, obviously, duck fat is a huge upgrade from other fried chicken options. But these days, everything is going downhill. Staff turnover seems very high and they don't seem like they want to be there or are interested in your patronage. The last time I ordered food there they made a mistake with the order and instead of promptly correcting it the employees were bantering with one another right in front of my while I'm waiting for my food, which would be fine if it wasn't also clearly distracting from their work. The chicken itself was dry and chewy--not the tender stuff I've gotten from them in months past. Combined with the bad service and atmosphere, I've given up on them. So, the Hall wasn't too crowded or busy. I was able to walk right up and order. The gentleman at the counter that took my order was nice and said that it would take 10-15 minutes for my order to be ready. My friend already had her dinner. I hoped it would be with the wait. I walked over at approximately the time my order was to be ready and waited. Everything was served hot and fresh off the fryer. For freshly fried chicken, it was not soggy or greasy - but it was also not crunchy like one would expect fried chicken to be. Instead the outer part of the chicken was dry, not as bad as leather but dry. The inside was moist. Not much seasoning at all. It absolutely needed the sweet and hot bbq sauce. The fries were another story. They were perfectly cooked, crispy, and delicious. I honestly loved those fries. Overall, it was underwhelming. It is absolutely massive and so full of flavor. The chicken is tender and juicy and tastes incredible. The makeup of the sandwich itself is a great balance. I only wish they had another location so that I didn't have to brave where they are currently. It's worth it, though. ------------------- I had this at a catered event and wow. The chicken wings and fries were absolutely amazing. They had great flavor, and texture to them and were made great! The nuggets were small and not as flavorful. Overall, the food was really good I did have a very negative experience interacting with the person who worked the front counter who was extremely rude, and disrespectful. Was not friendly when taking my order, which is fine but gave me an extremely hard time when I asked for the sauce that was included with the chicken nuggets I ordered. Told me, I had to ask for it beforehand when ordering even though she never asked me if I wanted sauces and I don't know of any restaurant that expects this when it says the sauce is included with the meal I ordered. She literally yelled at me when I politely asked again apologizing that I did not know that and that it says on the menu it's included. She never ended up giving me the cluckin sauce, and I just gave up as I was tired of being chastised and disrespected over a very trivial thing. The wings were very greasy and needed to be crispier and have some seasoning for flavor. The wings tasted bland, at 6 wings for $14 I need flavor and perfectly fried chicken. Why? Popeyes does it well it for cheaper so why can't Roots Chicken Shak do it even better for more? The Baked Potato Casserole was good, however the serving size was small! It was $5 but very small. The flavor was good and it was very cheesy. This isn't a bad menu item at all. I can't recommend Roots Chicken Shak, save your money. The service is subpar, nothing terrible but not average either. I wasn't greeted or thanked for my business and I was the only customer, there was no line (which was a red flag for me since this is located in the Legacy Hall food hall and a few other restaurants had lined for their food). read more

I've been a fan of Tiffany Derry since her season of Top Chef, so Roots Chicken Shak was on the top of my list of places to try while visiting Dallas. It was a 40 minute drive from where I was staying, but absolutely worth it! This spot is located inside Legacy Hall, which is a food hall filled with delicious restaurants and an upstairs bar area. While the other options at the food hall were tempting, I had my eyes set on Roots Chicken Shak. I ordered the Spicy Bird without the kimchi mayo (I don't like mayo) and was so tempted to order fries, but I wasn't super hungry. It took about 7 minutes to get my order, which wasn't bad. I promptly dug into the sandwich and was immediately greeted with a delicious blend of seasonings and spices. While it has a very subtle hint of spicy, I wasn't disappointed as it allowed the other flavors to shine through. The chicken was tender, juicy, and perfectly breaded. I'm not a fan of kale, but the kale salad worked really well with the sweet potato bun. Again, I love hot chicken and normally would be disappointed if a "spicy" sandwich didn't deliver on the heat, but not in this case. It's truly a testament to Tiffany's skills as a chef. If there was a location near me in Vegas, I'd definitely be frequenting it often. Probably best for my health that there is not lol! I recently had the pleasure of trying Roots chicken, and I must say, it was a delightful experience. While I usually order their wings, this time I decided to try their chicken sandwich, and I was blown away. The chicken was perfectly cooked, juicy, and flavorful. The breading had a nice crunch to it, adding an extra layer of texture to the sandwich. The sandwich with everything to this tangy sauce that complemented the chicken perfectly. The combination of flavors was simply amazing. The portion size was generous, and the sandwich was served with a side of crispy fries which were extra but the Duck fries were amazing also. I decided to get their delicious chicken fingers and wings. Since I live near NOLA, I've been told we have great restaurants. Over many decades I've been disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised Roots Chicken Shak was excellent. I'll be back in November. Texas always is cutting edge like California. Louisiana is not. The only place where indoor malls go out of business for outdoor strip centers. How nice it was to shop in A/C malls not out in 95° for 8 months. Placed my order for wings and fries cooked in duck fat. They took awhile to come out, but they were super hot when I got em. They came with 3 homemade sauces, ranch, spicy, and honey mustard. The wings and fries were crispy and fried well. They had a rich flavor and heavy mouthfeel from being fried in duck fat. I was at Legacy Hall for a concert one Saturday night and ended up stopping by here for dinner. I got the 12 count Duck Fat Fried Chicken Wings $26.00 and an order of Fries $3.50. It comes with 2 sauces, which I chose ranch and barbecue. The wings themselves were super tender and juicy, very hot and nice crispy breading with flavorful seasoning in them. The wings were so tender that the bones easily twisted out of them but they are very hot temperature wise so be careful. They give the full wing so technically there were 24 wings in the 12 count. The barbecue sauce was good but the ranch was flavorless. It is a good thing that the wings are so good plain as they only give 2 tiny 3oz cups of sauce for all those wings. The fries were meh, I would skip them honestly. I did trade a friend for the Tender from here and glad I did not get those as they were just okay versus the delicious wings.
