Roots totally redeemed themselves tonight from my previous, 3 star review. Our server was awesome and kind - he was the most attentive server I have ever had at Roots so they need to hang onto him! A friend and I decided to order several things and split - green curry soup with jasmine rice, sizzling sticky rice plate, pan fried rice noodles and potstickers. These are by far my favorite dishes here!! It was my first time having the sizzling rice and I highly recommend it. All the food was flavorful. We each ordered tea, I went with the apricot dream herbal team. All in all..two cups of tea and 4 dishes later, both of our bills were $23 and we had leftovers! Wonderful food that satisfies a wide variety of tastes. The menu is extensive and diverse, but they do every dish I've tried very well. When I order takeout, the portions are generous enough that one entree plus one app/side makes for another delicious leftover meal the next day. Everything is flavorful and made with care by a business that seems to enjoy what it does. As a vegetarian who hangs with meat-eaters, it's nice that Roots/Heart and Soy makes everybody happy and has become a takeout go-to. Reliably yummy for everyone. read more

Ok so I'm an Asian food fanatic, literally could eat it everyday and Roots has blown me away. So much flavor in every dish I've had. I wanted to give it a couple tries before reviewing and I'm glad I did. Not only am I loving the flavors and plating but the lady that works there, Van, is the sweetest and very attentive. This local treasure seems to be frequently overlooked. My family had never been and everyone of them ended up loving it. Even if you're not into vegetarian this place is still worth a try. Last time I went I got the spicy pho which had an interesting assortment of vegetables and was very spicy. My mom got a hearty salad and my sister got some pot stickers. We all loved the large selection of teas that they serve (no alcohol on the menu tho!) The service always seems to be one person. Wow! I came to this restaurant with a couple of friends after the St. Patrick's Day Parade and was pleasantly surprised. I'm not one to usually choose a healthy/vegetarian restaurant so I did not know what to expect. As we walked in, I loved how quiet, calm and peaceful the space felt. We got to choose where to sit and were promptly brought our menus and drinks. I went with the edamame and sizzling rice and they were delicious. I had never tasted anything like that rice before! The menu is a great selection of good, healthy dishes that only the pure carnivore who wouldn't eat broccoli if it was deep-fried and smothered in chocolate. Like so many other restaurants, sound echoes pretty badly inside, so it can be a bit noisy sometimes. So, if you have a screaming baby or bratty kid, please move down the street to Applebee's where that it the norm. read more

I am not vegan or vegetarian but I do enjoy eating wholesome, healthy food so I was excited to finally give Roots a try with some cool friends on Saturday! The atmosphere is nothing special and our server was just okay but the food and the prices were good enough to make up for that. Daniel and I both love bubble tea (boba) and find that few places offer it in Louisville. Roots has a wide selection of bubble tea flavors and we were super excited to try them. I ordered the Avocado and Daniel ordered the Coconut. Both were delicious and not overly sweet. I preferred the avocado to the coconut. We shared the veggie rolls for an appetizer and they were surprisingly hearty and tasty considering they were made with all raw veggies. For my entree, I went with the egg roll and tofu noodles. It was loaded with veggies an had great flavor. The portion was big enough that I couldn't finish it but Daniel had no problem helping me. He had a pear salad that looked tiny and not impressive. It might be strange to review a meal that wasn't something I ordered and which I could hypothetically have gotten for free if I'd wanted to take advantage, but I was so impressed with the experience that I must share. We happened here on the night before Thanksgiving while my vegan family was in town. We were seated in the back at these amazing recessed tables, so that you sit level with the floor and your feet hang down. A little awkward to get in and out of to be sure (and I felt bad for the guy who had to refill our glasses) but with the aqua recycled glass slab table, it gave the effect of somehow being underwater. Things seemed a little chaotic, and I noticed that one of the people working kept taking pictures of the over-full restaurant. After we'd been sitting for a while with just our waters, we flagged someone down to ask for a menu. Which is when we were told "Everything is free tonight. No menus." The guy explained to us that the proprietor closes to regular business every year at each of her establishments, and has volunteers work as waiters, taking only donations, and providing a free Thanksgiving meal. The donations go to charity. My disappointment that I wouldn't get to try something from the menu didn't last long when I heard this. What an awesome business to support. The meal we were served was relatively simple, but excellent. It started with a pumpkin/tomato soup that was really great. Then the main course included tofu, rice, a really tasty spring roll, and these sautéed/blackened green beans with strips of tofu that were out of this world. They were actually the best green beans I've ever had. I will absolutely be back to sample more of their fare. I found the owner to be so gracious that I plan on heading to the place next door and Four Sisters too. That's someone I want to give my money to. read more

During my brief time in Louisville, this is without a doubt the best restaurant I visited. The pan fried rice noodles were absolutely heavenly. The star of the show was really the fresh seasonal vegetables, which were cooked to perfection and drizzled in the best brown sauce I think I've ever had. The noodles themselves were tender underneath and crispy up top. I don't know what kind of oil they were fried in, but it was unique and lender a nice umami flavor to the dish. The dish was amazing, a wonderful combination of flavors and textures, and also very satisfying, I couldn't even finish the plate. I was surprised it wasn't more expensive, honestly. Service was friendly, helpful, and prompt. My tea was served along with a timer to ensure I steeped the proper amount of time. My girlfriend and I are in love with Roots. If you're with a friend or partner, it's easy to fill up on delicious orders for a decent price. Tonight, we each had tea and a dish, and shared an order of tempura fried veggies - all for about $35! Not bad for two hungry eaters. The food is delicious. I'm not a vegan or a vegetarian, but I do enjoy healthy eating so all the dishes I've tried have been light, but filling and flavorful. When I mentioned earlier it wasn't too expensive, I really mean it's a great bargain. I left in a food coma. Plus the service is fantastic. Of all the vegetarian-only restaurants I've tried, this is by far my favorite. Upon entering, you are surrounded by a sense of peace that makes for the most perfect unhurried atmosphere for enjoying a meal. Because most of the dishes are small plates and because I enjoy trying new things, I always over order. It also means that I've tried most everything on the menu. We've had the steamed edamame, pot stickers, vietnamese crepe, fajita (not on the normal menu), vermicelli noodles, soft tofu in hot pot, pan seared ravioli and fried oyster mushrooms. As tempted as I was by all of the beverages on the menu, I only tried the caffeine-free, peach rooibos hot tea. On a more recent visit, I tried the sizzling rice plate (not the regular menu), white beans, banana leaf (just dump all the accompanying sauce on top when the dish first arrives), avocado and tomato rolls, fried oyster mushrooms, steamed edamame, and the ginger poached pear salad. I tried a dessert for the first time - the recommendation of the house was the steamed banana cake with a coconut sauce and sprinkled with peanuts and sesame seeds. I've never had anything that I wouldn't order again. Go in with an open mind. Order a little. Then order a little more. Just keep on ordering. You'll have fun trying all the dishes. And, for all you meat eaters who would never consider going to an all-vegetarian spot, live a little. My meat-eating husband really digs this place too! read more

After hearing the Louisville is known for the bbq/pork chops and basically all the grilled meat you can find, being a vegetarian, I was a bit turned off by the city. I don't give that town enough credit, that's for sure. From what I heard, Bardstown is known for it's hippie/modern/vegan/new age contemporary culture. And, as expected...it surely lived up to it's name!! ROOTS is a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, serving only the best, organic foods, for those who have a palate for Asian/fusion cuisine, having a preference for FRESH and unique vegetarian foods. As we entered, the place was very quiet, so much so that I requested them to put on some music. We decided to sit "traditional style" in the pretend floor seating, which was really fun! From the Caprese plate to the spring rolls, the lettuce wraps to the pan-fried tofu pot stickers. I devoured everything put in front of me. I would not necessarily recommend the hot & sour soup, which was more oo-ahh-i-just-burned-my-tongue-off hot than spicy hot. I also attempted to pick at the steamed rolls, thinking they'd be like steamed dumplings, but the texture was more tapioca-ish and gooey. They were not exactly what I expected. I didn't really like the Bubble milk tea. It was too vanilla-ey and the boba was not textured as I like. Just because I was dissatisfied with a few things, however, doesn't mean my overall experience was not worth my while! I will definitely make an appearance next time I'm in town. We found this spot here on yelp looking for vegan/vegetarian options on our one night in Louisville. I cannot believe our luck! I ordered the green curry and the thai salad with a rooibos tea. The curry tasted so fresh and flavorful I was blown away! And the salad was the perfect balance of crunchy, salty, sweet with loads of fresh veggies. This spot was really such a gem! I am traveling solo, so I was by myself, which was okay, too. The menu is all vegetarian. A good portion of the menu is vegan and clearly marked. I tried the braised beets and the steamed banana leaf. The beet dish turned out to be a soup with beets, potato, spinach, and a coconut curry broth, with a good amount of spice. The other dish was steamed rice with small bits of tofu, veggie ham, lotus seeds, and some veggies, wrapped tightly in a banana leaf. There was a salty dipping sauce served with it, as well as some pickled vegetables. Neither dish blew me away, but it was all tasty, and there were several other dishes that sounded interesting that I would like to try. There is also an extensive tea menu. Oh roots! Where have you been all my life! This place is to die for and ever since I found it I have been coming back as much as I can. I can't get enough of the hue noodle soup and the tempura veggies are omg soooooo good! I always get the wonton soup for my 5 year old and he loves it along with the tempura sweet potatoes. I also really like the egg roll and rice noodle bowl and the sizzling fajitas. I haven't really tried a whole lot else on the menu because I keep coming back for the things I already love! I am not a vegetarian but could easily frequent this restaurant along with the sister restaurant (Heart & Soy) next door. Freshness of ingredients could not be matched. Green curry soup was top-notch, carrots and other veggies therein literally melt in your mouth, ridiculously fresh cilantro was an amazing touch. My husband loved the crispy pita and white bean dip, and the pan-fried noodles with seasonal vegetables. Lettuce wraps were okay, not as good as the rest of the items. Advice - our server warned us that many items were "small plates" and we should order up a few - consequently, my husband and I ordered two *small* soups and three of the savories / "small plates." WAY too much food for a lunch, much less dinner. We were a bit dismayed to have been misled, but still felt positive about the overall experience. The small soup was actually very well-sized, and this alone would have been good for lunch. Very large selection of teas - one thing I'd like to see, for the price of the hot teas, is to receive a small pot rather than a single mug of hot water. !!THEY SERVED ME ANIMAL PRODUCTS IN MY VEGAN MEAL!! After asking around the area where I can get a good vegan meal at I was directed to this place stating the owner is a "guru" in vegetarian and vegan food. I went in here starving and wanting a good vegan meal. The establishment is conjoined with another named Heart and Soy. Both menus are combined on one page and you have to order separately from each establishment though they are owned and operated by the same individual and out of the same kitchen. I can only imagine why there are two different entities operating out of one location. ?? hmmm................ So after being annoyed at having to pick one place or the other and sacrificing what it is I wanted to eat based off of the menu presented, I chose the Roots side. Since roots did not offer the dishes I wanted to have that H&S offered I asked for a recommendation from the wait staff. They made their suggestion and I ordered. The appetizer of a Summer Roll was on the mark. Fresh ingredients and promptly delivered. Then came my entree (Dont recall the name but will edit review after I find that out). The dish looked nice coming to the table and was actually tasteful until I got to the middle of the dish and I started to taste something "different". After examining the dish I noticed pieces of what appeared to be chopped and formed animal product. I got up to look at the menu to see what it could be as I was unfamiliar with the ingredient. I asked the wait staff what it was and if it contained any animal product as it tasted like it. I have a keen tongue. The wait staff informed me that it contained eggs. They also stated that sometimes the shipment of that particular product contains eggs and sometimes it doesn't, so she had requested it be left out of my dish since I ordered a Vegan preparation. I immediately lost the motivation to continue with my meal. The wait staff apologized for the cooks error, but still continued to charge me for the dish. Seriously. Their cook staff sacrificed my animal free "sobriety" by serving me animal products and you want me to pay you for it. Not happening. I spoke with the owner and she agreed to not charge me. Then yelled in her language to the cook about what he had done. Regardless I left hungry and highly agitated that I was served animal product in a "vegan" meal. VEGANS: CHECK YOUR FOOD HERE!!! Having come from Chicago and experiencing some "off the charts" vegan cuisine, this place falls well short of being enjoyable. The reason for my two star rating is because the environment was suitable and the appetizer was acceptable. Will I go back there??...... maybe, but if I do I will stress heavily vegan preparation and ingredients and will definitely check my dish over, twice. Heart and Soy right next door is quick and easy and I love it for that, but my love for Roots is on another level. Our server embodied the words "mindful and compassionate" found in Roots' tagline which references the cooking. Right in line with that philosophy, she sat down on the booth side of our table and gave us a orientation to the menu. Servers sitting down with their tables has always kinda weird-ed me out in the past, but this felt appropriate. She genuinely wanted to ensure that we understood the menu, which seemed as understandable a concern as any for a group of new diners. Roots has categories like soups and salads, but the typical entrees portion is replaced with "savories." These are listed generally in order of smallest portion sizes first to largest dishes at the end. We ordered a bunch of different savories and a salad or two and split them all tapas style. After recommending the place some friends without mentioning the breakdown of the menu, they clearly didn't have the same server I did and ended up ordering some of the savories at the top of the list without realizing that they were not all entrees. Side dishes don't make a feast, so they were not pleased. Each dish we had was vibrantly simple. The avocado and tomato rolls, crispy potato nest (looks like a bird's nest) and ginger poached pear salad are some of my recurring favorites now that I've put Roots in my regular rotation of restaurants. Despite some of these dishes having a variety of ingredients, the flavor of each somehow boldly stands out in each bite! Roots can be convenient too--you can order takeout items from Roots' menu at Heart and Soy. I am not a vegetarian. I love meat, especially steak and prime rib. My boyfriend was a strict vegetarian before he met me, and he now calls himself a flexitarian. Since I took him home for Christmas to meet the family, I figured I should seriously start showing support for his dietary choice and visit a vegetarian spot in Louisville. I did a search on Yelp and Roots appeared along with a few other vegetarian spots. I chose Roots because I thought of the extremely curly hair that appears at the "root" of most African American females relaxed and/or weaved hair. I was suspecting it would be a renegade rasta joint since it was on Bardstown Road, but I remembered Louisville is not that funky. However, we were very happy with our meal. The green curry soup and the braised beets were scrumptious, servings were mid sized despite of our server saying it was tapas style servings. I am aware that Kentucky is part of the Bible Belt and the natives are not able to fasten the belt due to their larger girths from larger serving portions. With that said, these portions were tapas style for a Kentucky resident. This place does not serve alcohol, so we drank hot tea. This forced us to venture across the street to the Highlands Tap Room for a beer, since we are also avid drinkers of adult libations. The food on my last visit was perfect. Fellow Yelp Elite Kathy V. and I shared the steamed rice rolls and they had the best flavor and texture! I got the crispy shitake mushroom with rice for my entree and she had the butternut squash soup. We both really loved the entrees. The service was not great on this visit. Kathy got there before me on a Friday night and they brought out two waters. I got there at 6:30 and no one came to take our order for about 20 minutes. We were having fun chatting and we had waters, but it was weird that they didn't even ask if we were ready. There were only 3 other tables in the restaurant so it wasn't like they were slammed. But you're here to fill that spaciousness in your stomach, Roots won't let you down there. The soups appear to have generous portions, as a small bowl of Hue will be just the right amount to hit that spot. You'll be slurping rice noodles in no time (okay really, don't slurp, gross). I went with the glass noodles, an salad with a description that sounded eclectic. If you look on the walls of Roots, you'll find the star of your dish in hi-res harmony with the universe. I'm talking about the carrots, radishes, and other vegetable rock-stars. They were all in attendance in my glass noodles. The salad provided quite the performance.
