We came to this place with high expectations because we saw it on Social media and wanted to celebrate our daughter turning 19. So we arrive and no we didn't make a reservation because the website specified n reservation needed. We arrived at 6:51 pm for dinner. We were greeted by a young lady who took our name and number and advised a 30-40 min wait. So we sat and waited, and waited. Finally after an hour, I went back to the front desk and asked how much longer, another lady said maybe another few minutes she stated and since we had 8 people. Wow! That pretty sums up our experience here. Located in the FoodsCo complex, in the spot where Culichi Town used to be. They transformed this place into a beautiful space. I mean the decor was a whole vibe. We came pretty late, around 10 pm on a Saturday and there were still quite a few patrons but we were sat immediately. They have dim lighting with individual lamps at each table which makes for a romantic setting. I was by far underdressed in my hoodie and Nikes and everyone else was all fancy, but I was not expecting such a nice place. It's definitely a little out of place for the area, but looks like it's been received well by the community so far. We ordered a Mari Mar and Michelada to drink and a molcajete to share. The molcajete came with a side of beans and rice and 2 house made corn tortillas. They all serve complimentary duritos (puffed flour pinwheels). Our waitress informed us they also have Mariachi on Fridays and Sunday mornings. We will absolutely be back and I've already sent my friends texts inviting them to come next time because it was that nice. read more

This place is newer. I came when they first opened and there was a 3 hour wait - crazy!! This time we made a reservation for my moms birthday and got in no problem. The decorations and atmosphere was great. My only complaint was the music was pretty loud, it was hard to hear the people next to me, but it's part of what they do. The food was flavorful. Today was deeply disappointing at Rosa Madera. We chose to eat here to celebrate a major milestone: the approval of the first two chapters of my dissertation, which focuses on antiracism. What happened instead was heartbreaking. Every time there is a birthday, the restaurant plays a loud song and the servers bring a dessert or drink. Normally, it seems like a fun celebration. However, today they chose to play Tokyo Drift for the only Asian family in the restaurant. It was very clear the servers picked this song intentionally, as they were laughing while bringing the dessert over. To be sure, my partner asked one of the servers if the family had chosen the song. The server said no--that Rosa Madera has a set list and the staff selects the song. It was clear the family did not necessarily understand the song choice or the racist mockery behind it. Adding to that, another birthday was celebrated shortly after, and they played a completely different song--confirming this was deliberate. It was devastating to witness the shame and heartbreak my partner, who is Vietnamese, felt watching this happen. We came to celebrate, but instead were forced to confront the kind of racism that my dissertation work tries to dismantle. The behavior was racist, plain and simple. It was disrespectful, targeted, and humiliating. Rosa Madera needs to be held accountable. Racism disguised as entertainment is still racism. read more

I'm going to start off this review with some background information regarding our timing. First off we went to this restaurant around 7:00 p.m. on a Sunday, and when we got to the hostess counter, they told us it was going to be a 2 hour wait. So we already knew that they were slammed. What they did tell us at the counter was we could go to the bar as it was open seating and enjoy cocktails and our dinner there. Luckily, there were two seats available, and so we took it The experience at the bar did not start off very well. We were definitely looking around scoping out the atmosphere and Vibe of the restaurant while taking in some of the food that others at the bar had ordered and using that to help influence a little bit of our decision on what to get. After about 8 minutes, the bartender finally acknowledged us and told us that he still needed more time and that he would be with us shortly to help us out. So again, we were waiting to get something, and what I mean by that we had not even gotten menus by that point to look at what our options were. After waiting about another 7 minutes, we finally asked again to at least see some menus as we were waiting. From what my husband saw, the bartender gave a little bit of an eye roll when we asked for this. So after we had our menus it was about another 9 minutes before a server came to us and asked us what we wanted, and by that time we had already decided what we wanted to drink and eat which was good because we needed to order everything at once considering the amount of people in the restaurant Regarding the two margaritas, the lime one definitely had a nice flavor to it. You could tell it was a classic drink, and it was done well. The Cucumber one was also very refreshing, and my husband added a little bit of jalapeno to it, which gave it a nice kick. The one call out was for mine. The drink components really came out, so at the end, I could taste the tequila as it finished the Sip. The other Margarita, which was the Cucumber one, was good, but it definitely was missing that like nice tequila finish Now, for the food itself, I will definitely have to say I was underwhelmed and disappointed with the ceviche. The main reason for this was the fact that a lot of the pieces were overcooked. What I mean by that is as I bit into it, the shrimp was a little gummy, and it felt slightly slimy because, again, the acid from the citrus had really gotten into the protein. I would also say that the flavor was not as strong, considering that it was meant to be a little bit more spicy. I asked one of the servers, passing by if I could have a little bit of salt, and even then, I did not get that. I ended up using the salt that was on my margarita glass in order to give it a little bit more seasoning. After doing that, the flavors were a little bit better, but again, with the shrimp being overcooked and a little gummy, it was not very appetizing. As for the Bistec, the meat itself was generally well seasoned. The accompanying sides, which were the rice and beans, were okay. The rice had good flavor, but you could tell there was too much water used because it clumped together on the plate in different parts. The beans themselves were good, but they definitely needed a little bit more flavor in the sense of a little more salt or even some cumin. The last thing I will comment on is definitely the service. Again, I am framing that it was a very busy night, but it was the lack of hospitality that really made the experience poor for me. Again, we were sitting at the bar, and the bartender that was closest to us really did not engage because they were busy talking to one customer the entire time we were there. The other bartenders were sort of interacting with customers, but again, it was very infrequent. I called this out because usually, to bring that sense of fun and hospitality, you would choose bartenders that typically have a personality type that will engage a little bit more often with the client. And I do think it was funny as one of the bartenders compared this restaurant to another one in the area called Pig Latin saying that they were much better, and I've been to that restaurant as well the reality is they are pretty much the same. Both of them struggle with consistency, quality of service from the staff, and being able to handle a large number of people coming in all at once. Overall, I was underwhelmed by the experience and the food here. Again, considering the timing and how busy it was, the recommendation I give is to try during a weekday or 3 months from now when they have had some time to Iron Out The Kinks. read more

Definitely a restaurant you want to add to your new FOOD SPOTS in Sac! The first thing that capture my eye was the ambiance! There's beautiful rose decorations throughout the restaurant, wooden tables, Mexican murals, & a decorated bar to tie it all in. It has a great aesthetic for pictures and you feel like you're in a different world. I personally, liked my Tropical Ceviche that I ordered alongside my Rosa Mojito! They're both refreshing food and drinks packed with flavor it was mouth watering. I'd definitely recommend having a side of rice and beans with the plate because it can become too saucy at a certain point and having that would balance out the flavors more. Service was pretty quick and up to par. It does get busy so I'd recommend coming in earlier or reserving ahead if you can. After searching and reading the reviews for Rosa Madera, we ventured out to try this local spot in Elk Grove/Sac area. From the outside, it looks the same size as other eatery establishments in the area but once you're in, the decor of the dining area is/was quite impressive with a traditional yet modern Mexico theme. On a Sunday afternoon , they had a live mariachi band like playing music....I love it The dining room was packed with every table filled and we were lucky to be seated near the bar area with lots of people waiting outside with bigger parties. The bar made delicious and strong mixed drinks, beware it's not cheap if you are thirsty or a high alcohol level.
