What an amazing night. We stumbled onto Rosella by accident and it turned out to be the best meal we had in a week of dining in NYC. First, the service. We were greeted by Shea who made us feel welcomed and comfortable. She answered all our boring questions with enthusiasm and expertise. She gave us menu recommendations and each one was fantastic. She and our server gave us an education into new types of wine and sake we had never experienced. Everything was perfect service-wise. Now the food... holy fresh fish, Batman! Everything we ordered, be it nigiri, sashimi, rolls or the noodles was exploding with freshness and flavor. The wine and sake outstanding. Menu is interesting, with very modern and global influences. We came in late on night for dinner, asked if the extremely loud music (louder than the inside of a club) could possibly be turned down a notch and were told with barely veiled contempt that "no, we're fine." Okay? You might be but we are not? It actually gave us both massive headaches, so we ate quickly and got out of there. The chirashi bowl was forgettable, the vinegar used was very sharp and aggressive. The Laksa was tasty though, and a nice amalgamation of flavors and various cooks on the components. read more

This is one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. The food's incredible and combines flavors and textures in ways that makes everything else I ever ate seem bland in comparison. I ate about ten of the dishes on the menu and they were pretty much all mind blowing. Nothing was average. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and guide you through this whole dining journey like old friends. There aren't a lot of tables and you mostly eat at the counter which is part of the whole experience. Google Rosella... what you'll see reflects the beauty and tastiness of the food. Bright, colorful, fresh, flavorful... we say for omakase for my sis bday. The chefs spoke with us about their food btwn their sharp focus on making each meal. All the food is sourced within the US, spiky lobster from FL, uni from from Santa Barbara, tuna from SC... and it was all good. Be aware, their sushi rice is slightly uses little more vinegar. Wow. What an amazing Sunday night experience. I asked my server to take me on a sushi journey with wine pairings and it was a revelation. So many bold and layered flavors, paired perfectly with a bubbly rose, a dry cider and a nutty sake. There's a lot going on here and it invites exploration and consideration. Fruity mixed with umami. The food was good and overpriced however we did not appreciate our server trying to sell us the whole menu like a car salesman. We saw the menu beforehand and knew what we wanted to try. We wanted to order a few things after one another and he basically said no. He made a weird comment about if we wanted to "have dinner" there as if our order was too small? Weird. So if we don't order enough we're not allowed to dine in? The vibes were weird. If you are a rich white person this place will appeal to you. I don't want to hear my server mansplain everything, pitch every roll and drink on the menu, while totally being condescending if you are not interested. Just know what the vibe is when coming in. I just wanted to order food and enjoy my company and not be lectured by the server. After we did not want to do his overpriced omakase or whatever he was selling us, we basically didn't hear from him till he dropped us the bill off before we were even finished eating. I would NOT come here again. If you're trying to listen to a condescending server lecture you this is the place for you. Was not our vibe. He did not feel/ seem genuine, just tryna get your money! It's unfortunate that I wasn't able to dine indoors, but Rosella made their very best effort to bring the attention to detail that their indoor setup had to their heated outdoor patio. The place setting was so pretty - the fabric napkins had a twine tie and the soy sauce dish had a little chopstick rest molded into it. Do note that you're definitely paying a premium for the service and the aesthetic, and you might feel a little underfed. They also have an excellent wine list - I really enjoyed the orange Gerwurtztraminer. Do note that Rosella is not by any means traditional sushi - it's got an American twist, and has creative and unusual flavors. It reminds me a bit of Elephant Sushi in San Francisco, but bougier. I tried all of their big rolls - the arctic char, yoni's breakfast, and spicy scallop roll. Yoni's breakfast is an upscale Philly roll which was very tasty. The spicy scallop roll had an interesting mix of textures with the soft fleshy scallop and the crunchy herbs. Those are the two rolls I would most recommend. The eel roll and the arctic char roll were not as imaginative. The XO and tomatillo bowl was a really amazing mix of flavors - it tasted very Southeast Asian to me, especially with the shrimpy, crunchy, spicy, and citrusy flavors. The orange cream amazake dessert was the unsung hero. I loved the creaminess with the occasional crunch from pomegranate seeds and the candied citrus peel. read more

Cute little spot. Casual neighborhood option for sushi and some unusual Japanese inspired dishes. The nigiri is not great, however. The netas are decent and locally sourced but the shari or the rice is not executed properly. The rice is too cold, has excess vinegar, and held too tightly in the hand so it becomes rather hard and unpleasant to chew. Go here not for sushi but for the appetizers and the noodles. Basically everything but sushi is pretty good. Friendly service and vibe also make things easier to digest. read more

We LOVE Rosella. We ordered their New Year's Eve dinner package for pick up and were seriously blown away. The packaging. The thoughtfulness and intention with how the meal was packaged and presented was incredible. There was a handkerchief and sash used to tie the packaging together that we were able to double and use for the setting on our little table at home. The wasabi and ginger were set in little gold tin cases thats easy to reuse. The food. The ceviche was so fresh. The rolls and nigiri were banging. I LOVE their laksa. Its spicy, hearty and warms you from the inside out. Their XO sauce is so so good. I wish it was in a bigger bottle so I could eat spoonfuls of it. It's been a few days since that meal and I still think about it. It gives me hope for 2021! Thank you for what you do Rosella team! Found this place super last minute and tried to walk in, the place was packed so we made a reservation and had to come back. All I have to say is WOW! The fish was so fresh it melted in your mouth. The summer sashimi was my favorite thing on the menu. You can really tell the chef loves his craft, he is on site and even came up to us during our meal. The personal touches here really made the experience one of a kind. The sushi bar seating allows you to speak to the cooks as they are preparing the food. Exceptional food. The Texas Wagyu, Bluefin Tuna, and Crudo Pesto are must haves. Both the head chef and sommelier were extremely warm and approachable in explaining the food and the taste. The prices didn't match the quality. We made a reservation a week and a half in advance and prioritized being on time and we were sat in the worst spot in the house. A tiny window counter by ourselves completely separate from the rest of the restaurant. Food took its time coming out. We ordered aggressively and came hungry. We left hungry. Randomly walked in off the street, ended up being one of the best meals of my life. I got the sashimi bowl (chirashi), and WOW it was amazing. First, the sashimi itself was perfect, fresh light taste prepared slightly warm. But then a taste adventure: Roe, egg, rice, seaweed, pickled radish, avocado. Every bite was different! And it all tasted amazing. Lived for 3 months in Japan, and the Japanese part of the fusion is at the level of the best of Tokyo. But ON TOP of that they bring this unique twist. They let us try a couple wines before choosing, and even poured one that isn't on their glass list since it was open. Quality of the sushi was absolutely superb. Not a single bad bite. My friend who was eating with me wasn't even that hungry, but got an extra spicy avocado roll (pro-tip: don't miss out on the avocado). Customer service was great- it's a small space and, yeah, a bit buzzy currently so it's busy, but everyone still somehow managed to cultivate a caring, personal vibe. I wouldn't have known they were super popular if I hadn't read tons of of reviews, because the co owner still took the time to listen to me rave about how much I loved their natural wine list (pro tip #2: great natty wine finds, pairing wine and sushi is not trivial) and the whole team was awesome and super friendly. When I called beforehand anxious about a reservation, the person who answered the phone was nice to me and gave me tips to try to get the hot res I wanted. Do you appreciate good fish? I discovered this spot randomly when someone from my old neighborhood recommended it on a neighborhood restaurant recommendation post. I'm lucky I did and even more lucky it was not overly crowded when I went because I think when more people discover it (if they have not already), it will be impossible to get a reservation. It is, quite simply, the best sushi I've had in at least Manhattan and some of the best I've ever had. The indoor seats are for folks doing an omakase-type meal which we were not so I cannot speak to that (though I suspect it was excellent) so we sat in the enclosed outdoor space. We ordered each of the large rolls, one small roll and the lobster roll. Each roll came out in a separate course which was perfect as it allowed time to savor each roll and take your time in conversation with my wife (i think this is a great date spot). The first one was the lobster roll which actually was a lobster-like roll. It had chunks of lobster on top with a roll underneath. Like every roll we had, it was as fresh as can be and a good value. Some people could dine on that alone (see picture). Next we had a spicy tuna roll. Now, i'm not even a big spicy tuna roll person but I loved this. While usually these types of rolls have gobs and gobs of mayo, this one had just enough and the tuna was fresh blue fin from Massachusetts. We next had an uni small roll which was also well made. Then we had a salmon roll which was excellent and had a bit of hot sauce in it for a little kick. Finally we had this "bagel" roll which had dill cream cheese, trout, tamago and cucumber. Again, i am not normally a fan of rolls with cream cheese and I loved this. Between those rolls, it's honestly hard for me to pick a favorite as we loved them all. Reasonably priced (esp these days), filling and delicious. Oh, and the service was impeccable. I could not ask for more. Visit this spot soon as I'm sure there will come a time when it will be difficult to get in. read more

And then the food, as advertised, all sustainably sourced fish but really interesting and well presented. It is not, and nor so far as I can tell, does it claim to be, a traditional Omakase place. What a delicious memorable experience! I booked in for the tasting menu. It was so worth it! The food was phenomenal! I was visiting from out of town. I always do a lot of research and book a nice restaurant when I travel, I feel like I made the right choice coming here. I ordered the wine/sake paring, which I also recommend. Chef Jeffery Miller is extremely talented. He takes great care in every dish. It was very personalized and I felt super special. It was a laid back comfortable environment, but still fancy.
