Went back a year later and am so happy to say it was even better than I remember. The ambiance is so special- intimate and chill- and the staff is excellent. The sushi pieces were my favorite, especially the smoked steelhead trout, smoked uni, bluefin tuna, and striped bass. I also loved the spicy avocado roll and fatty tuna and white kimchi roll. The oyster sushi and crudo blanco (bay scallops, fennel, turnips, trout roe) were also good, but didn't crack the top tier. The spicy tuna roll and ceviche (coho salmon, coconut milk, persimmon, corn nuts) were the group's least favorite, and they were still incredible! Finally, the coconut sorbet with basil oil and salt were the surprise of the night. Totally delicious. read more

I would give this place a 5, but the last time I visited the woman at the front was so rude to me I couldn't believe I was at the same place from my first visit after raving to my friends about it and wanting to show them my favorite sushi in the city. Unsure how I feel about returning. This was my favorite sushi in the city, but I feel a bit uneasy to come back. First visit review: We did the "chefs experience" with 4 people and food was amazing. Rosella is a beautiful space offering delicious, regionally-sourced sushi options and twists on traditional Japanese flavors. Here are the top things you should know: 1. Reservation recommended! There is limited seating space indoors and out and the team is taking a lot of precautions. Calling is a good way to secure a spot if things look full. 2. The staff is super cautious about the rona. I felt really safe with the dining situation. Outdoor tables are spaced far apart, there are heat lamps. Indoor, they're limiting it to four people and have the door open for air circulation. Temp checks are mandatory. 3. The approach to food is excellent. We had the chirashi bowl (highly recommend sharing), yonis breakfast (awesome twist and good option for those who may err on cooked items), and amberjack ceviche. I'd get all of them again. TLDR: get the scallop ceviche and smoked steelhead trout!! Very pleasant experience all around. Snagged an early Sunday dinner reservation for 2 on the same morning. Sat on the sushi bar and was greeted by a chef who was very friendly. We asked him to pick 2 sashimi and he chose the smoked steelhead trout and bigeye tuna. Both were delicious, particularly the smoked steelhead trout. I'm not a fan of smoked salmon at all and never eat it in sushi or bagels because of its texture and taste, but the smoked steelhead was so lightly smoked that it was my second favorite part of dinner. The fish was still plump and fresh and tasted buttery like any trout or salmon sashimi and the touch of smoke was not overpowering at all. A unique one for me. My favorite dish of dinner was the ceviche with scallop, coconut milk, calamansi, mango, and corn nuts. I love ceviche and usually my experience is mostly citrusy, but this ceviche (which I looked up may be like a Filipino ceviche called Kinilaw / Kinlawin with the coconut milk and calamansi) was not only citrusy but sweet and rich and creamy. I drank up the remaining coconut milk sauce after finishing the contents because it was so good. We also got the bigeye tuna roll which had a shrimp head infused oil and the fish sausage slider with a kimchi mayo. Both were delicious. read more

So so *so* ridiculously good! This is *seriously* good stuff. The fish is fresh, sustainably sourced, and ridiculously tasty, with endlessly inventive flavor combinations. Mind you, don't be fooled by the sometimes seemingly plebian nature of names - there is always a little twist, something different, a zing that leaps out and catches you by surprise. So yeah, go and eat (or, in these COVID-times, get take-out/delivery) - it is *so* worth it! While you're at it, do *not* forget to take advantage of the wine-list. There are a whole bunch of gems buried in there - ask the staff, and they'll happily talk your ears off about them - wines that you're unlikely to find in your average store! I had heard about Rosella during the pandemic and was honestly skeptical. I was drawn into the idea of Rosella because they source ingredients locally across the US. It's safe to say prior to eating at Rosella, I had never had trout sashimi lol.. My recommendation is to get yourself over to Rosella asap, the food was top notch and whimsical. The first thing I noticed was that the staff was highly attentive and super knowledgeable, I had no clue what to order. They guided me through the menu and offered to make selections for me omakase style depending on my price range. I put my faith into their selections and it panned out! Kudos to Baxter! - Watermelon & Tuna (Pesto, Fish Sauce, Granita) :: wow! This was a blast of flavor and extremely well balanced. I would've never really thought of putting these ingredients together, but it works! You're going to want to drink the Pesto Sauce.. it's that good! - Ceviche (Scallop, Coconut Milk, Lime, Corn, Corn Nuts) :: Another well-balanced starter! Great mix of sweet and savory. The corn and the coconut milk helps balance out the acidity and the scallop was extremely fresh - Sushi/Sashimi - (Fluke, Arctic Char, Fatty Bluefin, Pickled Mussels, Scallop) :: all in all the sushi was top grade quality and I couldn't believe that most of it was locally sourced either on the East Coast or nationally. The bites were extremely creative with their saucing and the rice was perfectly portioned. - Salmon Avocado Roll (Arctic Char) :: Extremely fresh and nicely sized. They were bigger than your normal sushi roll and looked more like Kimbop. All in, it was delicious! - Spicy Avocado :: ok, here me out.. this was a sleeeeeeper hit!! I would NEVER order just a simple veggie roll, but this handroll was nearly perfect. Whatever sauce they put in there was dynamo! Definitely must order - !DESSERT! Cantaloupe Sorbet :: just wow! Great way to end the meal and clean your palate. It had some sort of lime-sauce mixed in which again provided a really balanced bite. Sweet + Savory. I left feeling damn good! Had the most lovely meal here. Everything was delicious. The ceviche and shrimp nigiri were particularly good. The wine selection is also fantastic, we got the "Lemonade" Rosé. We had such a lovely time at Rosella! The staff was so friendly and helpful. Our server asked us a few key questions, then created a menu of their happy hour specials and dishes just for us. He arrived with a series of plates including things we never would have ordered ourselves, but we were delighted with each one. If I could give this East Village spot more than 5 stars, I would. This fresh seafood is INSANE. Everything is fresh, innovative, and full of flavor. Highlights include the fatty tuna and white kimchi roll and the bluefin tuna ceviche, but really everything was amazing from the miso soup all the way to the spicy tuna roll. Service is impeccable- our server was delightful and knowledgeable. The space is small but very chic- even the restroom is on theme with parrot wallpaper as an ode to the rosella! I'd heard about Rosella, a new sustainable seafood restaurant in East Village and seen good reviews, so my friend and I made a reservation and came here on a Thursday night. Reservations had been pretty hard to come by. At least at the time we were trying to get one, Rosella was booked out every single night. They had both indoor and outdoor dining when we came. Due to COVID restrictions, they aren't operating at full capacity. When I got to the restaurant, we ordered four dishes to share between us: the fluke ceviche, salmon and shiso roll, chirashi bowl, and laksa. Of our food, my friend thought the ceviche was the best. It was refreshing with a tangy vinaigrette. The quality of the fish for the sushi was fine, but the rolls themselves were a bit sloppily made. I liked the chirashi but there wasn't much fish, most of the bowl was rice. I thought the laksa was good but my friend didn't like this. It had a strong lobster taste in the broth. The noodles were thin and silky. The service here was efficient and attentive. I had brought my dog with me and the staff gave her some fish skin treats that they make for dogs. I'm not sure if I would recommend this place or come back based on this experience, but it seems very popular. read more

My friend and I went to Rosella last night for dinner, and while expensive, we had such an amazing experience! We started off with a chilled red wine, which our awesome waiter Michael made sure to periodically refill. He had such an outgoing and fun personality, and we really enjoyed talking to him! We were then helped by Jeff behind sushi counter, who gave us really solid and truthful recommendations, and he also prepared our food. While the dishes were EXCELLENT, it was the customer service and friendliness that were so memorable! I didn't really know what to expect, but dining at Rosella was truly one of the best recent experiences I've had. The layout, music, and service were all impeccable. Exactly what you want for a date night or catch up dinner. There is not a bad seat in the restaurant, but sitting at the sushi bar and being able to see all of the action in the middle was so entertaining. The wine list is also so fun and unique! There are so many different options to try, and Olivia (front of house) was so kind and warm. I'd come back for the ambiance alone, but the food was mindblowing. So many unique nigiri pieces, and all tasted so so so fresh. We had the tuna/white kimchi roll, shrimp, toro, pickled mussels, scallop, and uni. Don't skip dessert!!!! Delicious. We actually ended up dining here last minute after adding on to a reservation. The restaurant is small but they were able to accommodate us on a Friday night, the original was for 2 people and 3 of us added on. We had high top window stool seating, but didn't mind at all. We gave our waitress a budget per person and she went ahead and ordered a whole menu for us. Loved all of it! We had two of the rolls, chirashi bowl, red miso soup and a few other items. Came into town from SF where we have a pretty good food scene - Honestly, this was one of the best meals I've had in years. My fiancé loves sushi and was really excited to try this place after she read their NYT piece. She was talking about it days leading up to our reservation and I was happy to be along to enjoy. We got there on a hot, humid, July day - where we were greeted with warm smiles, air conditioning and some tasty cold drinks. Ask for some of the Rooftop Reds for a nice story on their wine that one of the owners is a part of locally in NY. Great stuff. Every piece of nigiri we had was literally perfection. We get good sushi in CA and this was top notch. Each piece was melt in your mouth butter, and better yet, sustainably chosen. The type of place you both look at each other after the bite because it was so good. Then wait a few minutes before the next bite because the flavor stays for so long. Interesting fish to try like Bluefish and Fluke and to round it out we tried the Laksa with King Crab on top as a rec from our server. In addition to incredible food was a noticeable attention to the service as well. It felt more like you were sitting down to eat at one of your friend's kitchen countertops that was recommending their favorite dishes and wines with a big smile and warm conversation...Only difference is I wish my friends could make a meal like that. When I got up to use the restroom, the owner was neatly folding my napkin in a triangle for my return to the sushi bar. You can tell the folks there take pride and enjoy being there. The 2 owners and server we chatted with throughout the night made the evening as special as the food. There are a lot of institutional places in NY everyone recommends but this will be our go to for us and friends any time we come back! read more

Excellent dinner spot for a special occasion, but the prices are steep for the portion size. Everything is shareable. We had a tough time deciding on wines and while our server was helpful, knowledgeable, and let us sample, he was a tad pushy toward more expensive options. For food, we had the ceviche (incredible flavors, best thing on the menu), spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado roll, spicy avocado roll (surprisingly flavorful and another sleepy favorite), and ended with the grits, another great, hearty choice. The food was very high quality and fresh, but it is possible to get fish of this quality vastly cheaper around the city. You're paying for the creativity and craftsmanship of the food here. Though it was cold, I was happy to sit outside since the interior is extremely cramped. It feels more like a bar with a hallway around it than a restaurant with proper tables. While the fatty tuna nigiri was excellent as expected, the smoked steelhead trout nigiri was an unexpected gem. The laksa was warming with the right amount of spicy, perfect for a winter evening. A playful and innovative omakase experience. All seating is at a wooden bar that wraps around the whole restaurant. There's not a bad seat in the house. It's mesmerizing to watch the well-oiled kitchen crank out a varied menu, with everything from shrimp etouffee handrolls to Laksa. The staff were really engaging and knowledgeable. There were quite a few Mayanoki alums on the roster, and like their alma mater, there is a focus on sustainably sourced seafood. Much if it is local from Greenpoint Fish and Lobster. It's every bit as tender and flavorful as Japanese imports, but much more unique. They stock a variety of house-made fish sauces, preserves, pickles, and powdered herbs that create a more varied flavor profile than a more traditional nigiri menu. The last savory course was a delicious cup of ramen broth, which is made with left over fish bones. As a pescatarian, I'll definitely be back to try a bowl of ramen as 99% of the time broths are pork, chicken, or vegan. Last, dessert was absurdly good. First off, this is explicitly an AMERICAN SUSHI restaurant, so don't expect what you'd usually get at another place. For what it is, this place is delicious and imaginatively creative. Waitstaff is so kind and sweet and attentive. This place is TINY; definitely get a reservation, i love that you can text them and actually talk to a real person. Pretty much every seat is counter seating so you'll be able to watch them either mix drinks or make your sushi. We ordered almost everything off the menu: the laksa was thoughtfully split into two bowls for us to share, and the chunks of seafood were generous and delicious. The crudo was very, very good. Still thinking about it. Their rolls are really big and fat, and i love it that way. I couldn't remember what I got (and by the time i wrote this review they've changed their menu) but it was worth getting both of them and filled us up. my FAVORITE FAVORITE thing that they let us try was their canteloupe sorbet ice cream dessert, with notes of olive oil and sea salt; let me tell you that was one of the most complex and delicious and delightful symphony of flavors i've had the privilege to experience. Bless Rosella for this CANTELOUPE DESSERT!! One of the most positive dining experiences I can remember. From the simple reservation to the wonderful communication with the front-of-house (would I prefer to sit inside, or stick with my outdoor reservation -- I chose inside), to the friendly, fun atmosphere. I really don't know where to start. A couple sitting around the corner suggested to the couple next to me to try the miso. Chef Miller (I presume) overheard, and brought over an order -- and one for me because I guess I looked lonely. It was the best miso I ever had and was phenomenal with the glass of sake suggested by the drink specialist (I apologize, didn't catch their name or title). To be completely honest, I have no idea whether I ended up paying for the miso or the sake, but it felt complimentary in a fun, friendly way (though I would have had no problem whatsoever paying full price). The spicy tuna roll was so creamy I almost ordered another. I ordered a spread of nigiri that was absolutely sublime. I'm really disappointed I missed scallop season, because I probably would have had a few orders based on how good everything else was. Really enjoyed the meal! 5 stars for the chef/service- which was top notch. We were arguing over whether if given an option we would end with a sweet or get another piece of fatty tuna. The sushi chef overheard and served us an extra piece of fatty tuna on the house! They also gave good recs on the sake. So yeah- the 4 stars is driven more by personal preference on the items served than any issues with the meal or experience. The nigiri were all really tasty - fish tasted fresh, and limited added flavor/toppings/sauce so that the fish itself was truly the highlight. Definitely my favorite section of the omakase dinner. Outside of the nigiri, the avocado roll with kimchi accent was my favorite and really special! Quite liked that, and also the hot cup of maitake mushroom farro miso they served before dessert (perfect, especially with the weather finally getting cold in nyc). The reason why this is 4 vs 5 stars is because I personally didn't really care for some of the remaining dishes - felt like the ceviche in particular didn't need as much coconut milk as it had (overpowering flavor) and the rice pudding was a big letdown (a bit flavorless). The hand roll also was not my favorite, which is atypical for me as I am obsessed with uni which was the key ingredient there. Not sure if I just got a bad one, but the uni was strangely watery - and kind of leaked out the bottom of the roll as I ate it. In any case, Rosella a unique omakase experience and reasonably priced for the quantum of food (we all left very full) so definitely worth a try! You may shake out differently than me on some of the above items too - I think there was one member of group who really enjoyed the coconut milk in the ceviche for instance. read more

My boyfriend and I came for our anniversary and got a bottle of wine, laksa noodles, and the lobster sushi roll. This place is pricey, but so good.
