Hidden away in the Design District of downtown LA, Rossoblu has set up a huge tented outdoor dining area, alongside its massive indoor dining room. The food here is inspired by the cuisine of northern Italy but made with seasonal Californian ingredients! To start, we had the bread basket, which came with generous slices of airy Italian bread along with a savory, umami anchovy butter, a sweet onion friggione (an onion chutney/jam), and fava e cicoria (mashed fava beans with greens). The stonefruit salad was a crunchy mixture of chicories, kale, frisée, sliced peaches, and candied nuts, all tossed in a light apricot dressing; and the seafood fritto misto was a dish of fried calamari with some fried lemon slices and fried olives thrown in as well--the crunchy morsels were served with a spicy Calabrian chili oil and a creamy aioli on the side for dipping. But my favorite antipasti had to be the grilled pork meatball spiedini--a plate of six grilled meatballs were served on two skewers, and the ground meat mixture was dense, pleasantly chewy, and had a flavor reminiscent of Italian sausage. Our second "course" consisted of two homemade pastas. By far my favorite was the Maltagliati, which were wide, chewy noodles tossed in a sauce made of saba (cooked grape must and stems), along with pioppini mushrooms, dandelion greens, and parmesan cheese. The grape syrup gave the dish a complex sweet flavor (almost reminiscent of balsamic vinegar), but there was a deep umaminess as well from the mushrooms and parmesan! We also had the tagliolini pasta, which were long, thin noodles in a creamy sauce with plenty of Spring ingredients including morel mushrooms, English peas, pea tendrils, green onion, and pecorino cheese. While this pasta was also delicious, the Maltagliati was definitely the one worth coming for! And finally came our mains--the whole grilled orata fish was served over a mashed fingerling potato salad and topped with a delicious Casteletrano olive pesto, which imparted a balanced sweet, acidic, and savory flavor to the fish. The Hanger Steak special came with fatty slices of grilled hanger steak served over potato puree and topped with anchovy butter. Along with our mains, we got three of the side dishes, including roasted purple cauliflower served with Marcona almonds and spiced yogurt; charred sugar snap peas topped with creme fraiche; and the fried fingerling potatoes dressed with fried herbs. All of the flavors of the dishes here were on point, though the most memorable dishes for me were the grilled meatballs, the Maltagliati pasta, and the orata with the olive pesto! And while the service here was nice and friendly, the pacing of the dishes was rather slow and too drawn out. I was really looking forward to my meal at Rossoblu, as it was my first "nice" dinner in LA with my girlfriend. However, looking back upon our meal, neither of us felt that strongly about it, which I normally deem to be a "meh" experience. We ordered a variety of dishes, including the bread basket, the Bolognese, the Maltagliati, and the Roasted purple cauliflower. The bread basket was phenomenal, with three delicious spreads to accompany the homemade bread. I was a fan of the onion friggione, as I really enjoyed the sweetness. The Bolognese was good, but honestly not as memorable as I was hoping. My girlfriend ordered this dish because she loves Bolognese, but this rendition didn't stand out to her or me too much. The tagliatelle was cooked nicely though and it had a great al dente bite. The Maltagliati was a really interesting dish. I had never had Maltagliati before and I actually quite enjoyed it. The dish had a nice amount of umami to it, probably due to the mushrooms; a little bit of both sweet and savory elements that made the dish really standout. The Roasted Cauliflower was probably the most disappointing dish of the evening. I really didn't feel like it was a unique or interesting take on roasted cauliflower; in fact, I didn't really get much flavor from it at all. I feel like the Fresno chilies and spiced yogurt should have added some potency to the dish, but I didn't detect much of anything. I think when factoring in the price of the experience, I feel validated by saying that my meal at Rossoblu was "meh." It wasn't bad, but also wasn't as memorable as I was hoping it would be. Another odd thing that happened during our meal was that we had quite a few of our dishes delivered to the wrong tables. It happened to two out of our 4 dishes. We only noticed because it was the table behind and the table across the aisle from us. Lovely experience here! Met up with some friends for a Galentine's day dinner. The hostess and the server saw all our Galentine's day gifts and decor and were all so friendly and accommodating! They brought us a little side table to place the gifts on as well as gave everyone a little sparkling rosé taster. It's the little things, ya know? We ordered a ton of food and shared it all so we got to try a lot of different dishes. Focaccia Citrus salad Eggplant Bolognese pasta Mushroom pasta Diavola pizza Brussel sprouts After all that we somehow managed to try the olive oil cake, tiramisu and the panna cotta. My favorites were the pizza and the pastas obviously. I normally find mushroom pasta too rich but this one was really great! I would definitely order it again. Service with a smile is an understatement - everyone we came in contact with seemed like an owner - so knowledgeable, professional, kind and welcoming. The ambiance is super cool & swanky. This Italian restaurant is my new favorite in LA. The pasta is fresh and tasty. Everything is so umami. The menu selection is diverse and unique. I would definitely come back. The restaurant is located in the middle of a sketchy LA neighborhood but the specific area where this restaurant sits is highly gentrified in its own semi-gated community. It has a beautiful outdoor patio and the ambiance truly reminds me of ROW DTLA (i.e., a modern industrial rustic LA Arts district vibe) for those of you who are familiar. There is valet parking right outside the restaurant. There is also meter street parking which I probably wouldn't recommend parking too far off as the area seems a little unsafe to explore at night. For 2 people we got 3 entrees to share: Ragu Tagliatelle (3/5) - Tastes exactly like how you would imagine it, nothing too special stood out to me except that it was obvious the pasta noodles were fresh Maltagliati (5/5) - I love mushrooms so this dish definitely stood out to me. I can start off by saying the hostess was not bright... but the rest of the evening gets better. We had a 5 pm reservation for a Saturday night so it was a pretty early dinner as I am presuming this gets hopping by 8-9pm. She sat us in the outdoor patio in the smack middle of the steps where people walk into the restaurant. The 5 of us immediately requested another table and she said she needed to check..5 pm?!? There was about 80% of the restaurant available at that time. Fortunately another server sat us away from the entrance. I was about to go to a different restaurant.. We ordered 5 items. The tagliatelle al ragu bolognese which looked enough for my 14 year old to consume but it was shareable for the 5 of us given we knew we had other dishes coming. We ordered the pappardelle with duck pasta, orarata in pesto sauce with mashed potatoes, a rib eye steak, and a garden and herb salad with Parmesan. Three of us had cocktails which was lovely. I enjoyed the steak and orarata very much. I would have given this restaurant a 4 if it hadn't been the hostess and outdoor seating. The food was above average. Rossoblu is a "laidback fancy" Italian restaurant located in the not so fancy fashion district of downtown LA. But do not let the location fool you. The ambience and aesthetic of Rossoblu is versatile and the menu here will lure in all types of Italian food lovers. Due to Covid restrictions, they can only offer a limited menu. To start off we ordered the Prosciutto Di Parma. I was a bit skeptical about this at first since I'm not huge on melon. But the combination of prosciutto, cheese spread, and melon on top of a a soft crunchy flat bread was amazing. Great way to kick off your taste buds. Next up we had the Minestrs Nel Sacco which was one of Jonathan Gold's favorite here. This one is a soup with tiny little Parmesan dumplings. Very cheesy and savory. Pretty much dissolves in your mouth. I will say this is more of an appetizer and would not recommend this as a stand alone dish. For our last two dishes we ordered the Tagliatelle Ragu and Tortelloni. Tagliatelle was more of your traditional ribbon pasta which included beef and extremely light ragu sauce. Tortelloni was a ricotta stuffed pasta topped with tomato sauce and Parmesan. This one was a bit heavier on the sauce which I appreciated. This place is a hidden GEM, on our way there we were a little nervous because the area wasn't great, but as soon as we turned down the street we knew it would be nice. They have valet right when you drive up which was super convenient. We sat outside and the atmosphere was enchanting, the decor and the candlelight setting was beautiful. Wife and I came here for dinner before a concert and it lived up to the hype. We started with a salumi board which had some tasty meats and cheeses. We tried the citrus salad, it wasn't really my thing but my wife enjoyed it. We also split the salami honey pizza, this was my first time trying the whole honey on pizza craze, and for me it's a liiiiiittle bit too sweet. I can see a little honey working out with some spicy salami or pepperoni, but drizzling the entire pizza with it seemed too much in my opinion. But again, my wife enjoyed it so truly a personal taste thing. Lastly I had the tagliatelle ragu, which was super tasty and reminded me of the true ragu you get in Rome. The manager James came by, congratulated us and gave us 2 glasses or Rosé. We ordered the bread basked, the big eyed tuna salad w/ beans, mixed greens, tortoloni, pork shoulder, fries, gelato (chocolate and one with vinaigrette!! And some lattes! The moment we arrived, we were greeted by the owner and everyone working here was very pleasant. Our waiter was especially attentive and was so knowledgeable. The food here is Italian but mostly from the Emilia-Romagna region. I've visited that region before and have even taken cooking lessons, and am so thrilled to say that the food here has brought me back there. The flavors and cooking method is very authentic and not Americanized at all. I have now found my new favorite Italian spot in LA! Rossoblu completely fixed their timing and our courses were served perfectly. That was my main complaint from my first experience. Brodo - We enjoyed the brodo again. This time it was tiny squares of richly flavored cheese instead of tiny pasta like it was last time. All around yummy from the cheese bites to the rich broth. Pizza - We went with the sausage rabe pizza. The flavor was good, but the crust was a little too floppy. I think we just need to stick with their main menu since the pizza is completed by a neighbor restaurant. Trout - We had the trout as a main. It was cooked perfectly and the topping went well, but unfortunately the topping somewhat ruined the crisped fish skin. I also thought the bean puree was good on its own, but I wasn't crazy about it with the fish. But maybe that's me--fish and beans seem like an unusual pairing. Gelato - We finished by sharing a bowl of hazelnut gelato and it is still the creamiest, best tasting gelato I've ever had. The menu does change so my review might not reflect what they have on the menu when you go. The funghi pasta here is really good. The pasta was cooked perfectly, and had a ton of different mushrooms in there. The sauce is out of this world delicious. The Ceasar Salad was good. The salad wasn't all mushy, and it wasn't drenched in sauce. The ribeye was delicious. Was super tender, great flavor, and perfectly cooked to medium rare. Every bite was just as good as the first. Brussels Sprouts, my friend hates brussel sprouts, and he ate about half the bowl. That's all I got to say about that. The pork chop is good. I mean really good. Super tender and perfect flavor. My friend orders this every time he goes here. As many times as I've been here, I've never had a bad dish. DINELA REVIEW 3.5 I really wanted to love this place but the food was just average. I don't understand how risotto covered in truffle shaving have barely any truffle flavor?! Prosciutto melon and honey figs for appetizer was okay. Entree was a corn and mushroom risotto with truffles...the mushroom was overpowering. There were lots of truffle shavings on top but we couldn't taste or smell it. It was weird. Olive oil cake for dessert with berry glaze was dry and again didn't taste that great. We didn't finish it. Maybe my expectations were too high because it has been a long time since I've been wanting to come here (ever since it opened) because of all the great reviews and lack of truly excellent full service Italian around here.. but Rossoblu just stood up to its Michelin star mention. Perhaps we ordered the wrong items, but chicken was OK, though grilled to a crisped perfectly. I always think chicken should be amazing if being served at a restaurant at its price point. Pastas were solid - all fresh and al dente. Mushroom was very umami with unique square shape and I now have confirmed that all seafood pastas need to have breadcrumb/battarga. As for sides and others - bread was divine with the anchovy butter being a stand out spread. The tomato onion was a sweet jam and the fava bean with pickles(?) was tasty. The eggplant app was a elegant pasta dish of its own though pricy. The pizza (hot honey salami) was just far too much cheese but crust was cooked well. The stuffed squash was surprisingly very well done and delicious. Overall it was fine - good service, of course, and food tasting as expected with some lackluster elements which makes a place with high expectations a little disappointing so maybe stick to just pastas and pork items next time. 3.5 stars. Download your menu thru scanning a code in your phone as you check in the front. Servers are all wearing masks and face shield. You can remove your mask once you are seated. For starters we got the prosciutto di Parma which came with 24 month aged prosciutto, melon and cheese. I've been hearing about Rossoblu for a while, and having seen it as Jonathan Gold's 10th best restaurant in LA this year, I knew I had to try it. I made reservations a few days in advance, but there were no tables left inside for a decent dinner time. I ended up just make a reservation for the outdoor patio section. We got there around 7pm. Rossoblu is located in the middle of a bunch of warehouses, but parking was pretty easy. BRAISED PORK MEATBALLS with Tomato, Grilled Polenta Bread - This was our appetizer but I was disappointed. For $12, we got 6 tiny meatballs and 2 small pieces of bread. While I thought the meatballs were cooked well, I thought that the sauce tasted like standard Marinara sauce, nothing special. NONNA'S TAGLIATELLE AL RAGU' BOLOGNESE with Beef, Pork, Not Too Much Tomato Sauce - I'm generally not a Bolognese fan, but I enjoyed this dish! The pasta was perfectly al dente, and the sauce had complexity. I could taste the herb mixture in the sauce. I'd definitely get this again, even at $21 for a small portion. CRISP RAINBOW TROUT with Broccoletti, Salsa Rosa - This was a whole fish (think Chinese style with head and tail). It was lightly fried and served with some broccolini. This was different from standard Italian fish dishes. We liked this dish, but at $28, I don't think I'd get it again. STEWED HEIRLOOM BEANS with Garlic, Rosemary - We ordered this dish thinking that these were green beans, but they turned out to be pinto/black beans lol. Neither of us liked this dish, and especially at $9, we thought it was way too expensive for just a dish of beans. HEY MAMBO! - This cocktail had Lime, Luxardo Cherry Morlacco, Luxardo Amaro Abano, Angostura White Oak Blanco Rum, and Club Soda. I like sweeter drinks usually, so this was delicioius! I could definitely taste the alcohol, but it was balanced with the flavors of the drink. We had the sweetest waitress ever and she offered great suggestions for drinks/food. But overall, our meal for 2 with drinks was almost $150 with the 20% gratuity. All of the dishes were just too expensive for the amount, and the flavor wasn't quite there either. This place is definitely on the pricey scale. I think the proportion to $$$ is pretty lacking and flavors of dishes were not that great. I would maybe come by here for a drink but the food needs a bit of work! We went over here since DAMA was pretty packed for 8pm dinner time. Decided what the heck, since I love Italian food and am always in search of real Italian pasta dishes. Ordered a plate of their charcuterie and ragu bolognese. Proportions the size of my fist and bland to the bite. There's a lot more to taste in DTLA for half the price compared to here. I think your paying more for the atmosphere. Definitely need to step up their kitchen game here. I appreciate the new hip vibes in Santee Fashion District but can't justify the price point to flavor ratio. read more
