I loved this place! It was mine and my good friend's first time and we wanted to have a nice fancy dinner. The waiter was amazing and even gave us a free glass of wine to try because we weren't sure what type we wanted yet. It is EXPENSIVE, this is a place where you splurge! My friend and I shared a plate (The waiter recommended we share), bread basket and a glass a wine and we paid about $100. The food was amazing but if we would've been starving that would not have been enough for us. The butter for the bread and the bread was amazing and we got the Tortellini. Service was excellent, definitely five star worthy there, but included in the bill is 20% service charge. Well earned, but that's a high rate. Going back to the food, salads were excellent. Crisp pork was also very good. Risotto... it's a very cheesy risotto, sour and tangy kinda cheese, rather that savory taste I anticipated. Pasta was good, but not as good as some other place I tried in the neighborhood. Also had, steak. Meat was prepared well to perfect medium rare. Savory, good meat. Spent the weekend in Downtown LA. Decided to give Rossoblu a try. I was a little a little worried with the reviews. I hoped it was growing pains that caused the bipolar reviews. Maybe. Cannot say for sure. But I can say that our experience was phenomenal. The service was A+. The pork chop with the belly was beyond description. Honestly, the best food I've had in a long while. Then there was the corn/mushroom risotto and the eggplant as an appetizer. Since I love Italian wine, but can never navigate the wine list with all the unknowns, I rely on the sommelier. Bingo! Perfect wine suggestion. Oh yeah. The 20% gratuity. I don't have a problem with 20% for good service. I'll tip more for the right experience. Far as I'm concerned, no issue. Based on the emphasis I saw on service, I'm willing to wager if I complained about 20% (with cause), they would waive it. So, not an issue for me. Go there. Enjoy. read more

Absolutely lovely dining experience. The staff was helpful and on point, the food even better. The house made pasta is other worldly.

Ordered a crostone, poached eggs, asparagus, and salad. Salad was tiny, more of a garnish. The crostone itself was flavorful, though as an effort on textures and temperatures it missed. The oval porcelain plate had a spine underneath, so if I tried to cut something with the knife, the plate clattered on the marble tabletop. The bread was cut thick and just dry enough that the provided butter knife would only get through the crust with great effort and clatter. The eggs were so soft that at a few points there was a flow of slightly thickened, clumping egg white around the plate. So slightly poached, by half way through the whole plate and the eggs and toast were cold the asparagus was tiny, yet not at all tender. I wanted to like it, but cold, runny egg whites on hard bread, well not so great. This dish takes a more measured approach: make sure plate is hot, make sure the bread is toasted yet thin or soft enough to soak up the yolks while still warm at least. Maybe a serrated knife!? Jay C and I finished our 2017 eats with our anniversary dinner at Rossoblu. Rossoblu embodies everything I love about the LA dining scene: cool art on the walls, large space with plenty of lighting (I hate dining in the dark), open kitchen and friendly servers. We ordered the charcuterie plate, tagliatelle bolognese, grilled oysters, and the suckling pork shoulder. The charcuterie plate came with 4 different kinds of meat and these fluffy pastries that were so delicious. I would have liked to see some sort of pickled items to cut through the meatiness but we happily devoured the entire thing. Then came the tagliatelle bolognese which was good but I've had better. I liked the thin tagliatelle pasta however if you left it sit for too long, it can overcook so eat it as soon as it hits the table. I thought the portion was a bit small but hey gotta save room for the main course. The star of our meal was definitely the suckling pig shoulder. The meat was so tender and the skin so crispy... the mild slaw underneath just brought the whole dish together. They only make a limited number of suckling pigs so reserve your cut right away. We also threw in two grilled oysters which was a great last minute add. I usually stray from grilled oysters as I feel it is a waste of an oyster however these are lightly seared with brown butter and sage. It was freaking amazing. I would have had more if I could. Thank you Rossoblu for ending our 2017 with a delicious meal and great service. I can't wait go back to try the eggplant and meatballs! --- Parking: Any LA restaurant with easy parking gets extra stars in my book. We came here for dinner after looking through all of the reviews. Overall we were pleased, but it did not exceed our expectations. The location is in a sketchy neighborhood, and at first the Uber driver was hesitant to drop us off. As we approached the restaurant it was really cute and trendy, and I loved the outdoor seating. Even the ambiance inside is very chic and cute. The waitress we had was also nice, even though she randomly left in the middle of dinner and we had another waitress help us for the remainder of the meal. We definitely followed the suggested amount to order since it's family size, and ordered a lot more food than we could eat. Overall the food was good. I was somewhat bummed about the rainbow trout, as it didn't taste too good, and they was the one thing we were all excited about. Didn't taste like it was cooked all the way through. The chicken and broccoli were very good, along with their idea of the Caesar salad. We also enjoyed the dessert, we got two scoops. One of gelato and another sorbet, very tasty. read more

I was a little hesitant to try this restaurant after reading all the lukewarm reviews here on Yelp. My wife and I went last night for an anniversary. The restaurant is impressive with its decor, large space and hustle bustle. That "large space/hustle bustle" translates into a cacophony of noise making it virtually impossible to hold a normal conversation. Fortunately we were seated outside which was a much more pleasant experience. We started with the oxtail coulette which featured three decent size pieces of shredded oxtail meat, seasoned and formed into "pillows". They are then seared and served crispy with grapes and celery. It was the best dish of the night. My wife ordered the milk braised pork shoulder and I had the sweetbreads with "stinging nettles" (actually in a tagliatelle pasta with sauce). The pork was very tender but it lacked seasoning so it was very bland. The sweetbreads fared better for flavor but, as many have noted before me, the pasta was both under and over cooked. How they could do this is beyond me for a restaurant that specializes in northern Italian cuisine. All I can figure is that they must par-boil the pasta so that when it's time for final preparation they can finish it off quickly. But, apparently, they don't bother to stir the pasta while it's cooking and as a result it comes out cooked unevenly. We also had an order of Kennebeck potatoes which were fine: crisp on the outside/soft on the inside. We did not opt for dessert although they looked appealing. I have two pet peeves about the service at this restaurant (although it was satisfactory): 1. I HATE when they are too quick to remove plates when other members at the table are still eating 2. Although we didn't order dessert, we were still working on our wine. The correct service would have been to tell us to enjoy our wine and leave us alone. Instead our server (who seemed somewhat distracted during our visit) was back in two minutes plunking our check on the table If you are looking for truly amazing Italian food downtown (or anywhere in L.A.) Unfortunately, the reviews I'd previously read were spot on - this place was extremely disappointing. We ordered a small salad to start, which was nothing special. We'd heard the pastas were made to order so we ordered the prawn pasta. I couldn't believe it was served less than room temperature. I mean, it wasn't anywhere near hot! Terrible. I made a weekday dinner reservation for two people a few hours before heading there and since it was on the later side the restaurant was kind of empty. I really loved the space and the ambience-it's your typical trendy DTLA high ceilinged industrial space with sexy murals and etc-I appreciated how the seating was so comfortable and it was a pretty quiet environment. We ordered a duck ragu and mushroom pasta and I thought both were pretty great and the portions were also impressive. The bread and spreads we ordered were disappointing and the fritto misto was nothing special though. This restaurant exceeded our expectations on all levels. The space and vibe on it's own was open yet charming at the same time. I was celebrating my 11 year anniversary with my hubs and we were debating between Rossoblu or Factory Kitchen. We decided on Rossoblu because of the hype. When we arrived, we were seated right away in the "garden" which was a glorified open space outside of the restaurant. Our waiter took a while to come to our table and take our order. The ambience was lovely and the food looked really promising. The problem was that our order of the meat plate was not as good as I wanted it to be. There was the run of the mill offerings and a plate of fried dough. It was ok, and the plate could have used an acid to cut through all the heaviness of the meats. The pastas we ordered were clumped together (maybe that is how it's suppose to be?) and very heavy with one dimensional flavor. My all time favorite Italian restaurants are Osteria Mozza (for elegant Italian) and Scarpetta (for homey Italian), and using these restaurants are a baseline, I think Rossoblu fell flat. My husband and I did the 7-course meal pickup for our 5 year anniversary and we were SO happy with it. The food was beautifully presented and tasted incredible! The best food you can eat is the place where the food origins from. Most of the time, that means you must travel to this location. The next best possibility is to eat authentic food nearby. Rossoblu takes you to Italy within one bite of their dishes. The décor is modern and hip but the food and the people make you feel like you are in Italy. As soon as I was seated the waiter explained the menu thoroughly and with an Italian accent. The waiters knew the answers to every question and never were slow on service. We first tried the braised pork meatballs. The meatballs were served with tomato sauce and toasted polenta bread. The tomato sauce was smooth and simple yet flavorful. The meat was juicy and not dense which is perfect for an appetizer. I then tried the pappardelle with sausage ragu, ricotta crema, and broccoli. I took a chance on this dish because I wasn't sure if there was going to be big chunks of broccoli or not. I was pleasantly surprised to find that when they brought the dish out, the broccoli was pureed into the ragu sauce. I loved this dish and how there were hints of broccoli but you could still taste the peppery sausage. The ricotta crema was creamy and salty and made the dish so decadent. My favorite dish I tried was the milk braised pork shoulder with caramelized cabbage. This dish must be their best seller because who does not like tender, fatty pork. Seriously, how could you not order this dish? The pork fell apart and the caramelized cabbage was so sweet. It was a match made in heaven. The meat was very fatty but the dish was served with arugula tossed in lemon juice which helped to cut down on the fat. Although I was very full, I had to try some dessert because with this successful of a dinner so far, the dessert must be amazing. I tried the cinnamon meringue cookie with lemon curd and blueberries. The cookie was so light and crunchy and had a small note of almond. The lemon curd and blueberries added great texture and made the dessert very refreshing. If you love Italian food you need to try Rossoblu because you will not be disappointed by any dish. Ugh. Overblown, misguided idea of itself. The food is unremarkable at best. Winter vegetable salad was seasoned with too much lemon juice so that it was highly acidic. Bread offered was over-sweet. Brick cooked chicken was recommended but apart from way too much salt, was utterly flavorless and unevenly cooked. The kale it came with was also extremely salty. My friends enjoyed the pasta dishes. My feeling was that, although competently made, they lacked sparkle. The maitre d and host were very gracious and helpful, the bar staff were great and made a fine cocktail. Aside from its wonderful atmosphere you can also view the busy kitchen with the chefs busy at it! The food was amazing which we started off with a Casanova's Cup-by far one of my favorite cocktails, and for dinner we tried the Tortelloni, Risotto and Ilario's Grigliata served delicious and promptly. Now outside seating is great on a warm night or daytime, indoors -the smaller tables are a bit cramped but I guess this is what you get in most places theses days. I was invited here for family/friend dinner. Based on reviews by culinary experts, you wish you have a Bologna heritage to cook these delicious dishes. There were 5 of us in the party. Our host ordered as recommended by our very attentive waiter, 3 appetizers, bread, two pasta dishes, two main dishes, 2 side dishes and it should be enough. He was right. We were not stuffed but satisfied especially with the food and service. My favorite was the Valbruna's eggplant appetizer. The swisschard tartlets was good too Very delicately prepared. The lamb shank was tender and even the chicken was moist. The pasta dishes, tagliatelle and parpadelle were both excellent a bit heavy types of sauces but exceptional and just right cuz we shared. I'm really impressed and will definitely go back to try more dishes. The place is kind of noisy because of the high ceiling and bare floor. Not easy to converse but very hip and beautiful decor. Highly recommend but be prepared for a hefty bill because even the bread is separate charge but really great bread. read more

I must start with the end, or rather, the 'genteel exit strategy' that sums up the commendable service we received. We arrived early with an outside table-- however, it was cold and windy, so we asked for an inside table. The hostess said okay, so long as we're out by 7:15. We agreed and had a splendid meal. When 7:15 came, we had paid, and were waiting to be shuttled out. However, the manager came with a bottle of liqueur and asked if we'd like to continue our evening at the bar-- the drinks were compliments of the house. That was a very nice gesture, ensuring that we'll definitely come back again. As for the fine food we started with uniquely styled appetizers-- scrumptious fried olives and prosciutto paired with persimmon. Our very knowledgable, friendly waiter advised us to share plates, so we split the Nonna's tagliatelle ragu bolognese, tortellini with parmegiano, ricotta, butter, swiss chard, and sage-- a truly rich, delicious dish-- and whole grilled orata (very delicate, nice presentation). We enjoyed it all and it was just the right amount for our table of four. The wine pairings were splendid as well. Although the neighborhood is in a less attractive part of downtown, it's up-and-coming, with new restaurants coming soon that will make this a destination and very hard to get in (it's already a tough reservation). We got lucky with street parking since we arrived at 5, but they had valet. Once again, we applaud the staff for excellent service. It was kind of a meh meal. Went with my girlfriend for the dinela special, and she ordered off the dinela menu while I ordered off the regular menu. I'm kind of epicurean, and the biggest bummer was a lot of the stuff here I could easily make in my own kitchen. We had a eggplant dish with globs of red sauce that tasted like tomato paste. The grilled oysters were good, but they were served on a pile of salt, and one of them wasn't cut from the shell, so it fell off and onto the salt (making it pretty inedible)...the focaccia was yummy, same with their butter. The malagatani pasta was nice, but nothing special. The ravioli tasted just like cheese (Parmesano reggiano). And the pear dessert on the dinela menu was ok, not great. For the price ($140 total, tip included), I was hoping they would have more unique/flavorful dishes. Also, we sat by the kitchen and I felt like i was going to freeze my toes off.
