Start Spreading The News! I have been searching for a New York style pizza forever now. Ever since our family trip in NY I have been looking for a similar style pizza. The NY pizzas are so good. I think I finally found it in Rotten City Pizza. So start spreading the news, NY pizza is now in Emeryville! It was my first visit last Saturday. I ordered a slice of each pepperoni and Neopolitan. I thought I was going to get a big slice but instead a slice order is served in 2 slices per order. The slices are thin but when they warm it prior to serving, the crust is crunchy but not tough. The pepperoni and Neopolitan were both tasty and greasy. But, it's pizza, it meant to be enjoyed and not worry about healthy eating. My rule is eat and drink whatever but in moderation. Anyway, Rotten City pizza has an outdoor beer garden seatings. But it needs a regular TLC to make it more appealing to enjoy the outdoor. Nevertheless, Rotten City Pizza really did it their way, like in NY! I will definitely return again and bring my co-workers because their pizzas are really good! I will definitely spread the news!

Funghi Fat Slice - vague mushroom flavor, absolutely soaked in grease
    Mike B.

Not such a great experience... The best part about this place are the people. When I arrived, the guy working the counter was very patiently walking someone through what was on the menu, how the service worked, where he was allowed to take his beer, etc. Really, really friendly and patient. But... the pizza. The pizza was not what I had hoped it would be. It had so..much...grease.... I ordered a quarter-pie of the Bianco Verde and a quarter-pie of the Funghi. I picked up a slice of the Bianco Verde. It flopped over and smeared grease all over my hand. So I sort of flapped it upward to try to get it into my mouth. Immediately it fell apart. Split across the middle. Now I had a slab of pizza way too big to chew in my mouth and a crust flopped down on my hand. Aside from the mess, I couldn't quite understand the flavor... It was sort of like chalky garlic? Also tried the Funghi and the same thing happened. Fell apart and I was left with a vague mushroom flavor and grease everywhere. I just couldn't finish it. $30 for 4 slices of pizza I couldn't finish. On top of all of that, I got scammed by the online ordering system on their website. In addition to the nebulous "Taxes & Fees" line, which seems to include a 6%+ fee on top of the taxes, my tip was increased by the system! An additional $2 was added on top of what I actually authorized in the order. Several other people say they had similar experiences, both grease and high website charges. I really hope they figure out what's going wrong here. I wish I could like this place and would be glad to come back and try again at some point.

Stopped by here for a quick bite - small spot, they have outdoor seating. The cashier and staff were very friendly - told us they could bake the pizza of our choice of the menu although they were running low/baking a new batch for the evening. We got the mushroom pizza - huge slice, one slice us very filling. Really enjoyed the flavors, garlicky and flavorful. Only complaint is that it's a bit too oily.

    Pepperoni Fat Slice

Pizza score: 1/10 The harsh reviews for here are spot on. This spot is a huuuuge disappointment. I wouldn't mind the ridiculous price if the pizza was good-- but it's not. $15 for 2 slices that is 1/4 of the pie turns out to be $60 for a whole pizza. That's the most expensive pizza I've ever heard of. I ordered the salami. The best part was the crust, and I don't even like to eat pizza crust. The pizza is bland with almost no cheese or sauce. The cheese and sauce that's there has little to no flavor. Very odd. Costco food court pizza is better. My husband ordered the pepperoni which was disgustingly greasy-- hold your slice up and it becomes a waterfall. The "beer garden" is a dumping ground of dumpsters, blown kegs, trash cans, and other equipment. Weird vibe, not like some old pics of what it used to look like. Not sure what happened here, but judging from old positive reviews, there was a shift at some point. "Rotten pizza" is a good representation of the end product you'll be finding here.

Lemon Pepper Wings 10/10 ! Ask for them extra crispy

The service was a10/10! The pizza and wings were amazing, not to mention the hot honey. As new residents of the Bay, we are so glad we found our go to pizza shop.

Ordered for pickup-- pretty pricy but generously-sized pizzas. For the three of us spending a night in, two regular pies was more than enough for dinner and leftovers. Still prefer Cheeseboard at heart, but appreciated the change. FUNGHI: Lowkey... Skimping on the mushroom. I was hoping they'd load up on their main topping, but this was a little less than two fistfuls of sautéed mushrooms. Flavor was fine, but I expected a little more for the price. PATATE AFUMICATO: S a l t y. I would've cut out the ham if I knew how overpowering it'd be for the whole pie. I loved the sliced potatoes and crisp red onion-- really think the pizza could've done without the meat, or needed something more acidic to cut through. This pizza comes with a white sauce, not tomato. Pizza itself is decent, but the crust is way too thick for my liking. Definitely not NYC-thin, as others have mentioned. If they say that the crust is a handle for your pizza, then it served its purpose. I couldn't bring myself to enjoy this bland, ashy, block of starch. Bleh.

    Meatball Sub Sandwich (Cross Section)
    Tiffany Y.

Wow, this place is so good! We tried the funghi fat slice (basically 2 slices of the pizza or 1/4 of a pie) and the crust was so thin and there was some crisp to it. It reminded me of the pizza I used to eat in NY. There were also these really nice crisp garlic chips on the pizza that added to the flavor. Can't wait to try some of the others. The meatball sub that we had impressed me even more! The ratio of meat to bread is amazing -- there is so much more meat so every bite is satisfying (see cross section photo for reference). The bread is also crispy and the sub comes out so hot that it's hard to eat (in a good way). I would definitely come back here again to try some of the other yummy looking things on the menu!

Jeff, the owner and pizza maker, is so nice, warmly welcoming us upon arrival and inquired if we'd prefer indoor or outdoor seating. Beautiful day so opted for outdoor on their expansive back patio. Miso mushroom - new to me, savory and bright flavor. Yuzu and lemon acidity cuts into the savory of the mushroom and miso. Might be one of my new favorites. Soppresata - an OG item on the menu and one of my favorites. Simple classic pizza with soppresata topped with scallions and honey. Savory, sweet. The honey is perfect on this pizza. Longanisa - Filipino inspired with longanisa, baked egg, and tomato. Savory and sweet. Heaviest of the three pizzas. Comes with a side of sweet vinegar to drizzle on top. All three of these pizzas easily are favorites for me. They're super large and best to share with 2-3 people. All thin crust. 6 of us had these three pizzas and were able to finish it but were super stuffed. Wishing the best to Jeff and Spinning Dough's next adventure.

At least I got to go a couple times before they closed and was able to try all the unique flavors that I wanted to try. The first time I went was with my family. We got a whole Ube pizza. The taste was good, and love the uniqueness of it. Even the dough is purple! There weren't that many people there when we went, so the service was quick. My second visit was closing weekend with a group of friends. I got to try two more flavors recommended by the server during my first visit - blackberry and longanisa. Both were very good in different ways. I think I preferred the blackberry slightly over longanisa. They had a lot of take out orders that day, and we got the last white dough (there were still Ube). Good thing we got what we got. Even though they were super busy, the service was still quick and pizza came out fast. I heard they opened up again in San Francisco but for take out only. So glad they reopened because after having the amazing pizzas right before they closed on Oakland, my friends and I were sad that we didn't go sooner. Can't wait to try again in the future.

Their pizzas are already reliably delicious, but this deal is genuinely outstanding value since you get a large 18" pizza, your choice of a Caesar or dinner salad, and four very large sea salt chocolate chip cookies, all for $35. We grabbed two of these specials for a group of six and still had leftovers, so I'd say one combo easily feeds three people and could probably stretch to four as long as no one is absolutely starving. The pizzas themselves are ultra thin but still hold up structurally since you can lift and fold each slice without everything collapsing, which is exactly how I like to inhale my pizza. I personally wish the crust were just a touch more burnt and crackly on the edges, but even without that extra char, the flavor and bouncy chew of the dough were spot on. We ordered the Hot Italian and the Sausage & Roasted Garlic pies and absolutely loved both, especially the housemade sweet Italian sausage that appears on each, which is savory, slightly sweet, and super satisfying in every bite. Their house tomato sauce deserves its own shout out because it hits that ideal balance of sweetness and acidity and ties everything together perfectly. On the Sausage & Roasted Garlic it plays beautifully with the rich roasted garlic purée, and on the Hot Italian it stands up nicely to the Calabrian chilis and chili oil without getting lost. The sea salt chocolate chip cookies that come with the special are huge and packed with chocolate chips, and that little hit of salt really enhanced the flavors but the something about the texture was a bit off for me as it wasn't quite chewy or crumbly but rather something in between, which left me a little confused. Another big plus is that Violetta has a full bar so you can pair your meal with a beer, a glass of wine, or a cocktail to match whatever pie you are in the mood for. Between the quality of the ingredients, the thoughtfulness of the flavor combinations, and the generosity of the Restaurant Week deal, Pizzeria Violetta is an easy recommend and a spot I would happily return to with a group (or by myself with plenty of leftovers!).

I really liked the tiny pep they used, they curl up when baked. This pizza was the perfect combo of sweet and savory, I bet it would be even better with some balsamic drizzled on it too. We also ordered a side of their blue cheese and basil ranch. I didn't know ranch could get any better than plain ranch. Basil ranch was bright and also creamy. I've been here a few times before to watch a warriors game. They've got tons of seating and of course they stream all of the games.
