Heading back on the freeway through Emeryville and wanted to stop by a familiar place to grab a quick bite with the family ~ it's been SO long since heading to Rotten City last, but had to give it a-go. Unfortunately there is currently no upstairs seating still, but if you're looking for grab & go slices and pies, they still gotcha! There is the outdoor seating area still, FYI! We wanted to have a minute before heading into traffic, so sitting outdoors with our warm slices was perfect. We may have came at a shift change time because slices were limited, but we went with the classic cheese and a pesto/chicken. They threw the slices in the oven to get em' nice and crispy, and they even threw in a meatball they were making fresh for the baby. Such a generous and nice surprise. He was more than happy! Slices are big! They're quarter pie slices (2 in an order) for around $15. Other cool things to mention..I noticed you can order Rotten City at Wondrous Brewery in Emeryville as well. This was an amazing pizza place. I have been going since I was in middle school. An employee asked what I ordered and when I told him i had chosen pizza he gave me a meatball to try. The pizza landscape has evolved all around you guys, and you were left in the dust, as the only people eating here were drunk people down the street at Prizefighter, or other locals. By the time they closed, they were closer to $50. Not sure who the owner thought he was, but some amazing pizzaiolo he was NOT. This place was basically run by 20-somethings, and it showed. Quality was lacking, as it was a solid B/B- pie, but at A+ prices. And despite previous feedback to this end, they kept raising their prices. Well look at you now! Go to Pizza di Laura, go to Rose Pizzeria, go to Lucia's, or Emilia's. You want the best NY style that's been around for years? Go to GIOIA, as the owner is from North Jersey, with roots in Brooklyn. There are many great options out there. Rotten City made their name due to setting up shop in a food desert of North Emeryville, and because there was a bar a block away. Otherwise, most people never heard of it. So, yes, I celebrate their closing. Maybe they shouldn't have pushed prices sky-high, thumbing their nose at everyone who complained. Because in the end, we get the last laugh. And once the building owner paints over the mural on your front wall, we all can go back to not thinking about your business anymore (don't worry, we didn't think much about it anyway). Rotten City: it was...kinda OK, for a minute, when they first opened, when prices were reasonable and they were the only player in town. But these days, there is NO WAY they can compete with a real pizzaiolo who won awards at the international competition in Naples (Pizza di Laura). Start Spreading The News! I have been searching for a New York style pizza forever now. Ever since our family trip in NY I have been looking for a similar style pizza. The NY pizzas are so good. I think I finally found it in Rotten City Pizza. So start spreading the news, NY pizza is now in Emeryville! It was my first visit last Saturday. I ordered a slice of each pepperoni and Neopolitan. I thought I was going to get a big slice but instead a slice order is served in 2 slices per order. The slices are thin but when they warm it prior to serving, the crust is crunchy but not tough. The pepperoni and Neopolitan were both tasty and greasy. But, it's pizza, it meant to be enjoyed and not worry about healthy eating. My rule is eat and drink whatever but in moderation. Anyway, Rotten City pizza has an outdoor beer garden seatings. But it needs a regular TLC to make it more appealing to enjoy the outdoor. Nevertheless, Rotten City Pizza really did it their way, like in NY! I will definitely return again and bring my co-workers because their pizzas are really good! Rotten City Pizza is my go-to when I want pizza but with a more elevated twist. Whether I grab a slice or a full pie, it always hits the spot. I've tried quite a few flavors, and not a single one has disappointed. The pizza is so good that it's hard for me to stop eating, even when I'm full! I've seen people pick up a pie and take it across the street to the bar--a perfect setup for a chill night with friends. The quality and taste are consistently top-notch, and while the pizza is on the pricier side ($45-$50 per pizza), it's worth every penny for the flavor and experience. That said, the space itself isn't much for dining in. There isn't a lot of room, and it doesn't have the ambiance for a long sit-down meal or catching up with friends. It's more of a grab-and-go or quick-eat kind of place. We usually bring it home to enjoy. If you're looking for a splurge-worthy pizza, I highly recommend the meatball pizza--it's my favorite! When I arrived, the guy working the counter was very patiently walking someone through what was on the menu, how the service worked, where he was allowed to take his beer, etc. Really, really friendly and patient. But... the pizza. The pizza was not what I had hoped it would be. It had so..much...grease.... I ordered a quarter-pie of the Bianco Verde and a quarter-pie of the Funghi. I picked up a slice of the Bianco Verde. It flopped over and smeared grease all over my hand. So I sort of flapped it upward to try to get it into my mouth. Immediately it fell apart. Split across the middle. Now I had a slab of pizza way too big to chew in my mouth and a crust flopped down on my hand. Aside from the mess, I couldn't quite understand the flavor... It was sort of like chalky garlic? Also tried the Funghi and the same thing happened. Fell apart and I was left with a vague mushroom flavor and grease everywhere. I just couldn't finish it. $30 for 4 slices of pizza I couldn't finish. On top of all of that, I got scammed by the online ordering system on their website. In addition to the nebulous "Taxes & Fees" line, which seems to include a 6%+ fee on top of the taxes, my tip was increased by the system! An additional $2 was added on top of what I actually authorized in the order. Several other people say they had similar experiences, both grease and high website charges. I really hope they figure out what's going wrong here. I wish I could like this place and would be glad to come back and try again at some point. read more

Stopped by here for a quick bite - small spot, they have outdoor seating. The cashier and staff were very friendly - told us they could bake the pizza of our choice of the menu although they were running low/baking a new batch for the evening. I wouldn't mind the ridiculous price if the pizza was good-- but it's not. $15 for 2 slices that is 1/4 of the pie turns out to be $60 for a whole pizza. That's the most expensive pizza I've ever heard of. I ordered the salami. The best part was the crust, and I don't even like to eat pizza crust. The pizza is bland with almost no cheese or sauce. The cheese and sauce that's there has little to no flavor. Very odd. Costco food court pizza is better. My husband ordered the pepperoni which was disgustingly greasy-- hold your slice up and it becomes a waterfall. The "beer garden" is a dumping ground of dumpsters, blown kegs, trash cans, and other equipment. Weird vibe, not like some old pics of what it used to look like. We like Rotten City Pizza, it's always fresh and hot and crispy and the ingredients are in league with other local, best-in-class, by-the-slice places. Still prefer Cheeseboard at heart, but appreciated the change. FUNGHI: Lowkey... Skimping on the mushroom. I was hoping they'd load up on their main topping, but this was a little less than two fistfuls of sautéed mushrooms. Flavor was fine, but I expected a little more for the price. PATATE AFUMICATO: S a l t y. I would've cut out the ham if I knew how overpowering it'd be for the whole pie. I loved the sliced potatoes and crisp red onion-- really think the pizza could've done without the meat, or needed something more acidic to cut through. This is our go-to local pizza spot. When we moved to West Oakland we tried many establishments and once we had Rotten City Pizza we did not need to look further. In addition to the pizza being delish the folks that work there are a group of cool, fun people having a good time. Wow, this place is so good! We tried the funghi fat slice (basically 2 slices of the pizza or 1/4 of a pie) and the crust was so thin and there was some crisp to it. It reminded me of the pizza I used to eat in NY. There were also these really nice crisp garlic chips on the pizza that added to the flavor. Can't wait to try some of the others. The meatball sub that we had impressed me even more! The ratio of meat to bread is amazing -- there is so much more meat so every bite is satisfying (see cross section photo for reference). The bread is also crispy and the sub comes out so hot that it's hard to eat (in a good way). This pizza is hands-down, some of the best in the Bay Area, especially if you like New York style but really, for anyone who likes pizza, Period. We had a large family event and "catered" from here, in that we ordered 12 pizzas and a TON of salads and all of our guests raved about how delicious everything was (...including several New Yorkers!) ;) My biggest complaint is just that we didn't discover this place until too recently despite the fact that they are located not too far from us. Thanks Mike and all the others that helped us. Oh, P.S. We were originally going to have our event at their location, in their courtyard. It has so much promise, but because of the weather and the lack of heaters, we decided not to take our chances...but I'd be willing to bet they would make a killing if they spruced up that courtyard just a little bit more, particularly with heaters, and they have a booming outdoor dining business! They used to sell pizza by the slice, a rare treat for me since gluten is on my avoid list. Now they only sell a full quarter of a large pizza, for $16-$17, way over a quarter of a pizza price. And a pricey lunch for one person. Those pizzas are pre-made and with a only a few limited choices. All they do is heat it up for you. No good reason to not sell by the slice. What they gain by more $$ per sale is canceled by the customers they lose. read more

Even though I have heard quality commentary regarding their pies for awhile, I have a hard time paying $40 for a pizza (no matter how good it is). Ordered the porcetta pizza to-go. Their pizzas come in one size (large) and are ready for pickup within 20 minutes of ordering. Having porchetta as a topping was definitely unique and a great flavor combo. My only critique (and the reason I didn't give them 5 stars) was they are stingy on the toppings. For a $40 pizza, I was expecting a generous portion of toppings, however, there is a full 2+ inches of plain crust around the perimeter of the pizza (see photos for reference). Beyond their bare crust, the flavors, ingredients and. SIP protocols are all top notch. Would probably return to try another pizza by the slice. read more

The prices aren't in-line with the quality of the pizza. It is not bad, but it's New York style street pizza, with thin floppy crust, meant to be folded and quickly eaten. I know it's an expensive world out there, but still. It's pizza. The cheese mix is a little different blend than other NY pizza places in the area--not better or worse, but a different flavor than what you would get at Lanesplitters or Arinelle's. Maybe more parmesan, less mozzarella than typical? I haven't eaten in, so I might raise the star level if I were to try eating the pizza freshly out, with friends, in their outdoor space. read more

YAASS!! Finally made it here and I cannot wait to go back after this quarantine! It was a perfect meal for no meat Fridays with a variety of vegetarian options. And their cheese pizza is not just some regular average cheese pizza, I mean... indescribable. Also, they reheat the slices in the oven for you and dude messed up one of our slices so he gave us a whole new one on the house. Totally unnecessary, but definitely made an impression. The maker was very friendly and told us his favorite pie was... I forget the name, but they only sell it whole, not by the slice. I'm gonna have to do one of those. The place is casual and divey. Upstairs has a tv and a pool table. They have outdoor seating which probably gets packed on summer days and nights. Plenty of street parking available. Ordered pizza for pick up while exploring a couple of breweries in the area. Very pricey, but, it is Emeryville/Berkely/Oakland area. AKA the Bay area which is normally very expensive. The portions were extremely generous for two slices of pizza referred to as a fat slices, and it was ready on time.Two fat slices; one neopolitan and the other a speciality of the day with pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms. The crust is very thin making it easy to fold and eat New York style. So good! Hot cheesy goodness. Also on the side I ordered a half cesar salad which came with homemade croutons, parmesan cheese and loads of romaine lettuce. The dressing on the side allowed for being able to dress your salad as much or as little as you like. Yummy. Friendly service upon entering as well. Enjoyed an evening stop here very much. Came by with the pup after a good romp over at Cesar Chavez Park and had a great experience. Wasn't too crowded for a Friday evening so we got a table immediately. Had a margarita pizza and an IPA. It was a good vibe, friendly people, cozy lights. Regarding the actual pizza itself - I would say as a New Yorker I have relatively particular standards for pizza. Chill little pizza shop with a patio and good, greasy pizza. We came on a Monday afternoon. Guy working the shop was very friendly and told us which pies were fresh. We ordered the pepperoni and the porchetta. Pepperoni was classic with nice hot pepperoni, tomato sauce, cheese, on a thin crust. Porchetta had chunks of pork with some kind of green sauce dabbed over it. Both were really greasy. Like puddling and dripping. I was hungover, so it kind of hit the spot. Both were a little salty and perhaps too heavily loaded with cheese for the thin crust. I might have wanted a little more tomato sauce on the pepperoni or a little thicker crust just to balance out all the cheese and grease. I ended up eating only a single slice and threw the other slice away, something I have never done. It's not that it had a terrible flavor but everything about the pizza was lackluster and uninspiring. Maybe it was an off day or they are dealing with some issues bc of covid? Got the Bianco Verde and Z. the Salumi two-slice deal. Honestly we were not impressed -- the pizza is kind of greasy, over-priced, and not as NYC-thin crust-style as we expected. The arugula pesto didn't add much at all -- in fact the replacement with basil (aromatic spice) with arugula (not a spice...) doesn't really make sense to me? The arugula just adds color. I think Z liked his Salumi so his main comment is just that it's very greasy and over-priced. Pros: We love the vibe -- the back sitting area with umbrellas makes you want to hang out there for hours. I can see the locals liking it here with a beer. There's also plenty of parking. Don't think we'll be back here, but we're glad we tried it. You can really taste the difference between a well made pizza and something generic. The only problem is it's sold as a quarter slice. So kind of price at $14. You can get 2 slices for $13 but it also equals out to 1/4 of a large- about the size of an individual pizza. The funghi one is groundbreaking. They said that they pan fry the mushrooms before they are placed on. I could have stopped at one slice but truly who's doing that if you have two. You can find a pizza for most dietary needs and they are willing to work with you if you want to special order. Highly suggest ordering ahead by calling and or online. And if you are ordering a pie, I would order at least 1 hr ahead as they get really busy and slammed with orders. They do have delivery via delivery services. If you're a fan of thin slice pizza this place is a cool spot to check out. Rotten City Pizza is far enough from the main part of the city where parking is a lot easier to find. They also have a little grungy feel and when you look on their website the place has a mission to honor E'ville's seedy past. They have plenty of space to come with large groups. The upstairs has a pool table for $1 a game, board games, and even darts while the downstairs area has a large outdoor patio great to enjoy some beers. They are also a pizza spot that allows you to order by the slice vs. having to order a whole pie so you can definitely come mix and match some flavors. Slices average ~$5 per slice so not the cheapest you can find, but they have pretty interesting flavor combos that make it worth it. if you ask me Bianco Verde is the way to go! Can't really go wrong with pesto and asiago. The porchetta is also a nice option to try but it is on the saltier side of things for my palette so I'll probably opt for other flavors. The only thing I wish was that the pizza crusts was a little more toasted since the porchetta slice we ordered didn't hold up that well after being re-heated. On their menu board I also noticed that they do beer slushies which sounded interesting so I def need to come back during HH to enjoy some flavors in their outdoor area. read more
