The fabulous Callie (sans Dave) and I continue our food exploration around Boulder today and tried Roxie's. We got 10 tacos with different fillings and different chutneys. They were very good - all three fillings are pretty much equivalent to me, but the cilantro sauce really stood out amongst the chutneys. The thing that made this place awesome is the price. Came here for lunch one day to try out this exotic mix of indian and mexican food I've been hearing about. The restaurant is small but efficient. They have 3 different picnic benches for dining, so space is limited, 2 are inside the store and one is outside. This place features Indian food made Mexican style. So Saag and curries placed into the form of a taco or burrito (I think they serve quesadillas as well). I got the Burrito with Saag since I always love a good Saag paneer. Each burrito comes with beans and rice (unfortunately these weren't separated, so you couldn't get more of one of the other), some tart slaw and a chutney. I tried the cilantro and raita (yogurt-based) chutney in my burrito. I have to be honest, this was kind of a letdown. Maybe it's the fact that I got the burrito and not the tacos, but the burrito I got was very one note. The paneer in the burrito was a little bland and could have used more of a kick, this paired up with the use of paneer, the rice and beans made for a very texturally bland dish. The tart slaw in the burrito helped to contrast the flavor, but was a little offputting as it seemed to veer to the polar opposite of the taste spectrum. I also tried a few of their different chutneys, which unfortunately also had the same flavor throughout. The cilantro, raita and sriracha chutneys were all green, a litle bitter but with a good kick of sour and a few herbal notes from the different herbs in the sauces. I wanted them to be a little more varied in flavor, especailly when you tout them as diffferent chutneys. I LOVE indian food, but maybe I got the wrong thing, maybe I shouldn't have got a paneer burrito. But based on my first visit here, I find the food underwhelmng at best, albeit at a very reasonable price, especially for an on-campus place. read more

I'm in the camp that believes that tacos shouldn't cost more than $2.50. Welp, Roxie's changed my mind. I had one chicken taco and the quality was amazing. The chicken was flavorful and juicy and the indian flavors were amazing. The tacos are larger than your average street tacos and the slaw, raita, and cilantro chutneys were incredibly fresh. They were out of bowls and burritos when I arrived at 7pm on a Saturday, but I was planning to get a taco anyway. Give this place a try! It's a fusion combination that I've never seen before but am now wishing I had come up with it. read more

We had a great dinner here. An interesting mix of Mexican and Indian food, both of which we love but never really thought to combine. I had tacodilla with red curry chicken and extra queso, it was delicious. The papadums were good as were the flautas. There were many interesting things to try, we will be back to try more stuff. The Good: Delicious, flavorful Indian-style tacos. Super fast -- they started as a food truck and have their system down to a science. Affordable and filling -- I left ten minutes later totally stuffed from two tacos for under $7! They have live music here sometimes which is fun! Vegan, vegetarian & gluten-free options. The Bad: Nothing really! Well, they don't have lots of seating or any beer/booze on the menu, but that's not what it's about -- it's perfect for grabbing a quick, delicious, affordable bite that'll fill you up and taste amazing. The menu is small (just chicken, saag paneer or chana masala) but you can switch up the style with the other options such as chutneys. The Food: So. So. Tasty. I adored the chana masala, which had tons of flavor. The saag paneer was delicious too! Light crunchy slaw, hot fillings and two tortillas for structural integrity. Whoever thought Indian and Mexican could be molded together in such a glorifying unity of flavor. We had the chai tea, red chicken burrito, and pork nachos (daily special). Everything was cooked to perfection. The nachos were crunchy and the red chicken burrito was flavorful. The chai was quite strong for people who don't typically drink chai. The only knock is that this place is tiny. There are only two tables inside with a couple more outside. If you're a big group you might not find a place to set. We went late in the afternoon, so ended up ok. However, I can see this being a problem. Overall though, if you're looking to try something unique this is an excellent choice. There's a lot of fusion food out there, but I have to say this is one of the better ones that doesn't feel like a gimmick. read more

Food was amazing! Husband had red curry chicken burrito and we shared 3 tacos. The tacos were chicken chili verde, birria beef and red curry chicken. All we're crammed full of meat. Wonderful flavors, fresh ingredients, definitely worth the trip. Tried several chutneys as well and they great! Perfect compliment to the tacos and burritos. I categorize restaurants into two types: 1. Restaurants opened to share the love of food. These are your David Chang Momofuku izakayas, your true foodie gems. 2. Restaurants opened to capitalize on some niche novelty. Driven by pure $$$. These owners don't have the concept of pride behind their dishes. They will serve you the lowest quality mixture to make a quick buck. Roxie's Tacos is solidly in the latter. Let's go over what I had. I ordered two tacos: saag paneer and chicken something. Each cost $4 for a grand total of $8, for TWO tacos. Saag Paneer taco: * filling: about 3 dime size pieces of bland paneer buried in a glob overcooked spinach with a faint trace of stale cumin. About ~1.5 tablespoons total. * topped with shredded cabbage * score: 1/5 Chicken something taco: * filling: pulled chicken marinated in a sesame soy sauce base. It was too watery and way too salty. About ~1.5 tablespoons total. * topped with shredded cabbage * score: 1/5 Worst part: tacos were served on RUBBERY 6" corn tortillas. This is the stuff you find in bulk pack at Costco. There is a proper way to make these factory made tortillas palatable, however, Roxie's just dgaf to even do that for you. Yes. This place is that bad. Roxie's fusion strategy is: take 1/5 quality Indian food + 1/5 quality Mexican street tacos + cheap filler (shredded iceberg lettuce) = 2/5 + 3/5 for novelty. It's a brilliant business strategy, since most people don't know any better. It doesn't work on me, since I'm actually a foodie, and slow down enough to recognize and appreciate the DETAILS of what I'm eating. read more

Totally random concept that works. Let's be honest. We eat most Indian dishes with bread, so why not a soft taco or a burrito. The restaurant is tucked around the corner from a bunch of restaurants and shops. There is both indoor and outdoor picnic table style seating. The menu is short and simple, and it's organized well. Start by picking what type of dish and what type of entree. I chose a taco with dadas red chicken. The sauces/curries are available similar to other condiments. You grab them on your own and take as much as you want. I checked in on yelp and got some free chips and salsa! The chips are nice and salty. If you don't like salt, it may be a bit much. The chicken in my taco had some heat, and I loved cutting the heat with the various sauces. One taco was enough for me, but I feel most people would want at least two. This review will hopefully be a little more specific than other reviews. I read multiple reviews and wanted to try the place for about a year. Ill start with the good: I tried the saag paneer taco and the chicken. Both had very amazing flavors and were absolutely delicious. Now on to the bad: 2 people were working. I asked for a recommendation on what to pick. 1 person had no idea as if they hadnt tried the food. The other person said there is no comparison they are vastly different. Ok. So wouldnt it be helpful to mention that the saag paneer is incredibly spicy? Thats at least a partial description right?So after the guy seemed annoyed to have answer my questions I just decided to try them both. The saag paneer and the chicken were actually very similar in taste to me other than the saag paneer being spicy as all get out. I can handle some spice but it was difficult to eat it. I ended up having to get it to go because it was so spicy i needed something more with it to dilute the spice. They were out of the crispy tortillas....ok fine but thats what I had ideally wanted. I can live with that but still takes a bit away from the experience. Reading other reviews saying that 2 tacos is filling is something I completely disagree with. I was not full and could have eaten another taco. The only chutney I found to be remotely edible was the tamarind, that was really good. But the others, I guess just personal taste were awful to my husband and me. Now that I know what to expect, I would probably go back only because the tacos are very tasty, I would just know not to order the saag paneer due to the spiciness and to order more tacos next time. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars based on the rave reviews but my experience just didnt go that way. read more

The manager was a good chat, super cool dude. He created a very welcoming environment for us out of towners. He gave us the lay of the land.. and recommended we start with 3 tacos. The concept is to put Indian food into tacos... a perfect blend of my favorite worlds. We ordered the vegan option... the Chana masala tacos. I tried all 3 chutneys, all of which are vegan. My favorite by far was the tamarind. They all came with a kale slaw, so much flavor. Highly recommend you try this place... I also hear they may cater if your having an event or something. read more

Hidden Boulder gem on University Hill! This place is right on busy Broadway, so parking is kind of tricky - BUT SO WORTH IT. As sad and decrepit as the hill is these days, I am happy to see something authentic and quality arrive. These are indian inspired tacos and they are so insanely delicious and satisfying. For 3 or so bucks you get a good sized taco. I personally love the Chana Masala and the Saag Paneer. They always have a "special" taco that has been delicious every time. The one thing I would say to adjust is not to serve the tacos with two corn tortillas - the bland flavor can really take away from the insides of the taco and one tortilla is absolutely enough to keep everything together. Recommendation for the owners: the current menu is confusing. Simplify it. Just list out the Tacos and Burritos and get rid of the "meal" options - I have heard others mention this.... In Boulder and want a cheap, TASTY lunch or snack? This is your spot. read more

It's kinda strange that the best tacos I've had since moving to Colorado is an Indian Fusion taco place, but that's what it is. I think they have taken the concept of using similar foods from other places along the same longitude and fusing them. This is something a lot of modern-day famous and highly regarded chefs have been toying with. Mexico and India? Right around the same distance north of the equator. So it's a perfect match. Service was excellent, the venue is very simple and low key, but it's a small startup and I think they did really good with what means they had, plus it's a casual place so I don't really consider ambiance as much as cleanliness anyways. Cleanliness was perfect. The tacos and burritos were amazing. This is a match made in heaven. This si the kind of culinary idea that can be spread throughout the US quickly, as long as no one else beats them to the punch. I always recommend Roxie's to my friends in the area now. And the price was competitive considering how boutique and fresh of a product they offer. The Hibiscus Limeade reminds me of some of the kinds of lemonade mixed drinks you would get at a legit Mexican restaurant when I lived in SoCal, but it had that Indian twist, and it went really well together. I had the super burrito with some kind of pork special they had that day (can't remember the name) with the cilantro chutney. I also tried the tamarind chutney on the side with it, excellent. Even the chutneys have a hint of Mexican cuisine in them. My wife had tacos with the red chicken and tamarind chutney on the side. Incredible. Again it had the soul of Mexican food combined with the depth and artisan craft of Indian food. I was just amazed by the tacos. I really felt like I was eating a burrito and Indian food at the same time, it was truly impressive. Usually fusion comes across as missing the mark and just doing it for the gimmick. This spot is AMAZING! It's a bit out of the way for me, so I usually come here for a special treat and I always love the food. The flavor and texture pairings in the tacos really does it for me, and the chutney bar adds just the right kick to any dish I have here. Every time I have come here the service has been impeccable and friendly. They call you by your name and check in to make sure everything tastes great. I can't recommend this spot enough. I'll say the chutney was the best I ever had, and you get a much as you need at their little chutney bar. As usual I'm coming from a Vegan perspective, and that was a channa masala taco with kale, and slaw. I loved getting one flour and one corn tortilla. The service was super fast, and the limeade hibiscus super yummy. My non Vegan friends loved every bite.
