    Roti Chennai
    Vivek B.

Walking around Cambridge MA we came across this Malaysian restaurant. The ambiance is pretty practical with lots of space indoors. Apparently the restaurant is building some outdoor seating but that may come later. Let's get to the food - the Roti Chennai was good. The owner is from Ipoh Malaysia so we had to go with her suggestion of the Choy Kway Teow. Overall the food is good with a definite authentic streak. I would certainly recommend it to anyone in the area.

The food is overpriced and nothing special you couldn't get take out. The tofu and eggplant was fried in a sweet and sour sauce that tasted straight from the bottle, and the other veggies were cooked in similarly one note sauces. The daily special, fresh bamboo shoots and bok choy, was a scam for $26 (they didn't tell us the price before encouraging us to order the special). Basically just seasoned with salt, pepper, water and cornstarch, nothing to write home about and completely wasting the potential of those fresh bamboo shoots. The popiah was ok but it had eggs (not listed in menu) so not vegan. Scallion pancakes had no scallion flavor and were just hard dense triangles of fried dough. Total bill was more than $65, and was definitely not worth it. You do get a small discount for cash, so that's nice but still not worth coming here for.

Black pepper steak tips (chef specialty) is pretty good, slightly spicy and flavorful. Hainanese chicken rice comes in yellow non greasy rice very different from SE Asian white shiny sinfully tasty fragrant rice- so manage your expectations accordingly, and order the known good dishes.

I ordered White rice and General Gau's chicken and a side wings. It was ok

The food was tasty. The service was great! The place was pretty chill and quiet. The guy that attended me was nice and sweet! I would come again and try new things !!!

I wanted something crispy as close to KFC wings as possible and this did good! Not the same but quick, yummy, and straight forward service. Lots of takeout activity but I ate inside. Asked for chili oil and side of rice and was very happy. Other dishes looked good! I know It's not super authentic but one of those times where you have a major craving.

Duck was so dry, most parts were unbeatable. Terrible waste of money.

very disappointed. Peking duck was dry like jerky. it must have been sitting on a rack for several days as usually ducks are never dry due to fat. all other items we ordered were equally sub par. they must have changed a cook. after spenta lot of money, we were very disappointed. will not go back.

Yes, I know that the dish has ground up shrimp and not whole shrimp. As mentioned in original review, I have eaten this several times at your restaurant. There was no ground up shrimp either sandwiched in the eggplant or fallen out into the sauce. There was zero shrimp/ shrimp paste. And the pic does not show shrimp anywhere. Thanks for addressing my review a year later. Edit: editing my review since it was an isolated incident. The owner has been very gracious with his acknowledgment of my experience. I hope to go back there in person for work lunches and enjoy their food as I have in the past.

1st Dining is allowed here. 2nd there are a few places open on July 4th, and the brunch place that I planned to go has 1 hour wait, yes, 1 hour! So I walked up to here around 11:50am as the first customer, no fuss! 3rd, the mild spicy fish dish was delicious, when I asked how kind of veggie they put in the soup, the manager gave me extra broccolis at no charge! They just won a returning customer!

Really below average crispy sesame beef - was not crispy and tasted / smelled burnt
    Genevieve C.

My guess is that their Malaysian type foods are good but the others aren't 1. Roti canai - dough was very good and curry was flavorful 2. Crispy sesame beef - was so terrible. Smelled burnt through the bag. Was not crispy at all. A really dark almost black color. Tasted also super burnt Wouldn't order from here again

Catered food from my grandmother 's 90th bday. They did a great job!

This is the closest I've had to modern Chinese cuisine in Boston so far. Swing Pork Belly 晾衣白肉: My first time trying Lizhuang pork belly, I'd heard so much about it! The pork belly was sliced very thinly, chilled to perfection, and served with refreshing cucumber slices--not greasy at all. The minced fresh garlic was a bit too spicy for me, but the chili oil was very fragrant, making it very flavorful overall. Yibin Style Ran Noodles 宜賓燃麵: Another first time trying this, how could noodles be so delicious... The alkaline noodles were thin and firm, with a great texture; the flavor was oily, savory, and slightly spicy, with a delightful sweet aftertaste--fragrant but not greasy. The cucumber shreds added to the overall refreshing taste. Green Pepper Mao Xue Wang 青一色毛血旺: My first time trying Maoxuewang with green peppers, and it was surprisingly fresh and clean, with a medicinal aroma. The spiciness was only mild, and it wasn't oily at all. The ingredients were good: the pig's blood and konjac were smooth and chewy, the pork aorta was crisp and springy, the celtuce were crisp, and the eel shreds were chewy and crunchy--a very rich selection. Spicy Frog Lover 舌尖上的蛙跳: Relatively average. It had the classic Sichuan boiling flavor, but the broth was almost like it had been thickened with cornstarch; the frog meat was a bit firm, not tender; and the pickled vegetables were too acidic.

Everything came out flavorful, spicy, and packed with that numbing Sichuan peppercorn kick. The spicy chicken was probably my favorite crispy, well seasoned, and loaded with dried chilies. The boiled beef had a rich, spicy broth and was great with rice. The beef and tripe appetizer was also really good and had a nice balance of chili oil, sesame, peanuts, and that signature mala flavor. Portions were generous and the food definitely delivered if you're looking for authentic, bold Sichuan flavors. Overall, a very good meal and somewhere I'd come back to.

In fact, ever since the other Chinese spot changed ownership, I entirely switched to eating here whenever I want a quick sit down Chinese meal. The food is good. It comes out pretty fast. It's done pretty well. And the best part, it just doesn't remotely hurt the wallet. Even being a regular, I'm still amused at how the service is so stereotypical Chinese in the way that I'm just another soul coming in to be fed and not remembered or acknowledged. Mind you, I'm here a LOT and am usually the only one sitting there eating while delivery people repeatedly come and go. Anyways, two reasons why I'm unable to give them 5 stars. First, the tap water they serve...tastes like @#$%. I don't know what it is but I've actually started bringing my own water bottle (or just ordered a soda). Two, the steamed rice is inconsistent. Half the time, it's perfect. The other half...is wet and mushy (I want to say a reheat but isn't that just such a faux pax in Chinese cuisine?). Nonetheless, this is one of the few four and less starred places on my list that I will still continue to frequent and recommend to anyone in the area wanting a quick and decent meal for cheap!

When we went inside, there was only one other party there and no music, so just whispers and the sounds of utensils against plates. There are about 4-5 booths and 1-2 regular tables to choose from. Since l am not familiar with Sichuan cuisine, I had Al help me choose my dishes. I went with the dumplings in chili sauce, fried rice, eggplant in garlic sauce, and chongquin chicken. While we waited, we were given water. The dishes came out at different times. They first served us the dumplings which were really good. The sauce they were in did have some chili sauce, but it was mostly like a sweet soy sauce and really tasty. It came with about 6 dumplings with a perfectly cooked wrapper and filled with flavorful pork - simple but delicious. Next was the eggplant. I was expecting a heavy garlic presence, but it was more like a sweet and sour sauce. The eggplant was very tender, but really hot so we had to wait to let it cool down a bit. The rice came after. I honestly think this was one of my favorite dishes since it was perfectly cooked, great flavor, and good portion. Lastly, the chicken came out. There was a large pile of chicken, but half of it was peppers. The chicken was cut into little bite sized pieces, each fried perfectly. Some pieces were more tongue numbing than others but it was nothing aggressive; very gentle and comfortable numb. I would have liked if there were music, but the no music was fine too; an escape from chaotic reality. Our total was around $50, which wasn't bad for the amount of food we got. I would come back to try other items.
