I couldn't capture all of the food, but came for a work dinner and everything was absolutely delicious. The food came out at a great pace and we had plenty of leftovers. It was truly a great dining experience and I'd definitely go back! Service was quick and they were not only attentive to our giant group, but the other patrons as well.

THIS PLACE IS SO AMAZING! The food is so good and tasty and nothing has failed me the multiple times I've been here. Everything tastes authentic and perfect amount of seasoning and for reasonable prices. Service is fast and the food comes out fast too. It's a huge spot and I've always came when it's not busy.

The make your own spicy dry pot was yummy but the portion size was incredibly small. The chicken with scallion was pretty standard. I placed an online takeout order on a Friday night and it was ready for pickup within 20 minutes.

Big restaurant with lots of seating. Ordered the shuizhu beef soup and it was delicious. Serving was huge, and I had leftovers for two days after. Added my own Chinese cabbage, beansprouts, and tofu to the mix at home.

    Dry and old

I have actually been there before- today 80$ of nastiness- lobster was old and dry teriyaki and chicken sticks or nothing small and dried. The rice was undone with the vegetables nasty tasting like a refrigerator.- last time ordering from there

Well here it goes, my first yelp review. We decided to give this place a try and after the first bite, it's easy to say we won't return. The General Tso and Orange Chicken were delivered in small portions, had little flavor, and the chicken tasted a bit off. Keep in mind that this portion is $20 and does not conclude rice, but you can add it for another $3. In total, $57 for 2 to-go containers of subpar chicken. Best of luck to 5 Spices House.

This is the best Chinese place I've found in the Boston/Cambridge area! The dishes here all had their distinct flavors, with combinations of spicy, sour, smoky, and tangy. We got the Shredded Pork with Pickled Cabbage Soup, the Szechuan style cold jelly appetizer, and the double cooked pork. Each one knocked it out of the park. They also have a make your own dry pot bar, which I haven't tried but have heard good things about.

I was told to come here specifically for their dry sauteed Chinese eggplant ($14.95). It is truly incredible! The eggplant slices are fried to a perfection where the outside is super crispy while the inside is soft and cooked through. The seasoning on them is amazing, too-- lightly garlicky with lots of white pepper, cumin, and sichuan peppercorns. It reminds me of salt and pepper shrimp, but it's vegetarian. The portion is very big as well. I wanted to try some of their other dishes so I also got the home style spare ribs with potatoes ($16.95). The dish came with a large portion of ribs and potatoes. The meat was super tender and the potatoes soaked up the sauce. However, the dish seemed a little boring to me because the sauce was mostly just soy sauce without any other flavor. The sauce was also extremely salty. I regretted not ordering another spicy dish. I will continue to come back just for their dry sauteed Chinese eggplant! That dish alone definitely deserves 5 stars. The other dish brings it down to a 4.

Came here for lunch right at opening on a Friday late morning and we were seated quite quickly. We were the only ones in the restaurant which led to pretty speedy service which was really convenient. The soup was really great - I would honestly order just the soup next time as it was really well made in my opinion. We got four entrees for lunch to share between two people and it was plenty of food. The lunch deal I thought was very solid as it's a soup, rice, and one option as your entree which I felt was more than enough for a good price. The scallion pancake was deliciously crispy, the squid was well seasoned, the tofu was really yummy, and the chicken was spicy as well as tasty. I probably wouldn't get the chicken again honestly, but I'm glad I tried it. We couldn't finish everything and when we asked for it to get packed, we asked for the two bowls of rice and two soups that we didn't get served and they happily packed that away for us as well. Good service, great food. I'll definitely be coming back - thanks 5 Spices House! I've been to both their sister restaurants in Malden and Chinatown respectively and found both great alongside this one!

I'll spare you most of the gory details of this punishment, which was meant to deter future traitors with its brutality, apart from the section in which the offender's entrails are burned before his eyes. Having eaten practically nothing all day, and after being turned away from Sanbada for an early closure, my date and I decided to try Mountain House, which she described as "authentic." Several mistakes were made. Principally, because my date is from Hunan, her definition of authenticity is not the kind of "spicy" Szechuan food I've come to love at restaurants like Noah's Kitchen. Instead, it compares to a 1599 incident in which the Jivaro people of modern-day Ecuador executed a corrupt Spanish governor by pouring molten gold down his throat. Starved, I ordered the La-Zi Chicken and shoveled two spoonfuls of it into my mouth, failing to note in the haze of hunger that the despite its name, the dish is at least 80% dried red chili peppers that have evidently been coated with military-grade pepper spray and subjected to a Satanic ritual to add to their flavor. Survivors of gunshot injuries on the battlefield report that because of the flood of intense adrenaline and psychological focus inherent to combat, they often don't feel a bullet wound at all until after the firefight is over. Indeed, for a few blissful seconds, my body communicated nothing but "ahh, food, finally," before lapsing into psychosomatic reenactments of various medieval punishments throughout the ages. As the intense stomach pains, sweating, and tears set in, I looked up to see the waiter, my torturer, standing beside the table. "You look like you're going through it," he grinned, rotating, I am sure, the handles of a rack just out of view. "This isn't even the spiciest thing on the menu, you know." The agony was hardly sufficient to smother my mental image of his same grin glimmering before the red light of dancing flames amid hot coals being shoveled down my throat. Reader, I survived, but just barely. Luckily, the same date who betrayed me to this fate is also a doctor who set two full bottles of Pepto-Bismol next to the couch where she instructed me to lay on my left side in the fetal position. Currently, my toilet is on a leave of absence while it is being treated for PTSD on an in-patient basis; I try to send it sympathy cards, but I don't think it will ever forgive me. Mountain House is not so much a restaurant as it is an experience of these historical events: it demands, like the best high school social studies teachers, that we do not shy away from history's horrors, but face them directly, so that in our humanity we choose definitively not to repeat them. I left these trials with a new appreciation for the suffering that people throughout history have been willing to subject one another to for political or social reasons, and thus recommend it with five stars for anyone who wishes to better understand the depths of human depravity.

In fact, ever since the other Chinese spot changed ownership, I entirely switched to eating here whenever I want a quick sit down Chinese meal. The food is good. It comes out pretty fast. It's done pretty well. And the best part, it just doesn't remotely hurt the wallet. Even being a regular, I'm still amused at how the service is so stereotypical Chinese in the way that I'm just another soul coming in to be fed and not remembered or acknowledged. Mind you, I'm here a LOT and am usually the only one sitting there eating while delivery people repeatedly come and go. Anyways, two reasons why I'm unable to give them 5 stars. First, the tap water they serve...tastes like @#$%. I don't know what it is but I've actually started bringing my own water bottle (or just ordered a soda). Two, the steamed rice is inconsistent. Half the time, it's perfect. The other half...is wet and mushy (I want to say a reheat but isn't that just such a faux pax in Chinese cuisine?). Nonetheless, this is one of the few four and less starred places on my list that I will still continue to frequent and recommend to anyone in the area wanting a quick and decent meal for cheap!

When we went inside, there was only one other party there and no music, so just whispers and the sounds of utensils against plates. There are about 4-5 booths and 1-2 regular tables to choose from. Since l am not familiar with Sichuan cuisine, I had Al help me choose my dishes. I went with the dumplings in chili sauce, fried rice, eggplant in garlic sauce, and chongquin chicken. While we waited, we were given water. The dishes came out at different times. They first served us the dumplings which were really good. The sauce they were in did have some chili sauce, but it was mostly like a sweet soy sauce and really tasty. It came with about 6 dumplings with a perfectly cooked wrapper and filled with flavorful pork - simple but delicious. Next was the eggplant. I was expecting a heavy garlic presence, but it was more like a sweet and sour sauce. The eggplant was very tender, but really hot so we had to wait to let it cool down a bit. The rice came after. I honestly think this was one of my favorite dishes since it was perfectly cooked, great flavor, and good portion. Lastly, the chicken came out. There was a large pile of chicken, but half of it was peppers. The chicken was cut into little bite sized pieces, each fried perfectly. Some pieces were more tongue numbing than others but it was nothing aggressive; very gentle and comfortable numb. I would have liked if there were music, but the no music was fine too; an escape from chaotic reality. Our total was around $50, which wasn't bad for the amount of food we got. I would come back to try other items.
