As I am preparing to study abroad in Beijing and Taipai this summer, I have decided to try as many Asian inspired dishes that I can. I found this little spot while visiting campus. As I walked in, I noticed how quiet and clean the restaurant is. There was only one set of customers in the building so it was quiet. I was immediately seated (of course) and taken to a table in a comfy corner. The menu is a QR code hidden in a little box on the table. I thought this was cool and a good way to decrease wasted paper. The entire ordering process is digital and immediate. I knew exactly when they received my order. I ordered the traditional chicken noodle soup and was a bit surprised upon seeing the bowl. It had about 6 pieces of shredded chicken, but the presentation was nice. The taste of the chicken noodle was disappointing. I immediately ordered something different. The tomato infused noodle soup was amazing!!! I wished I had a Jamaican dumpling to dip in the broth! It was fantastic!! I loved the broth so much that I put my dumplings in the broth as well . The dumplings were delicious by themselves! Lastly, when the manager saw that I ordered another soup, he asked "was this one too plain for you?" I stated yes. He did not take it off of my tab....that was a huge no no. 10/10 for delivery presentation and obviously the food! I've never gotten such a beautifully packaged order for delivery from any place EVER. My food arrived in the cutest panda insulated bag (which I will be reusing) with the funniest ode to "crybaby" reviews/complaints which I'll get to later. I ordered the signature spicy beef noodles and the handcrafted zhong dumplings. It's my birthday today, but I was stuck at work so delivery was my only option. This was a perfect choice and exactly what I needed to make it through the rest of the night! The spicy beef noodles soup came packaged with the noodles separately (10/10 for thoughtfullness) and it was exactly what I hoped it would be. Spicy, but not spicy enough that you can't taste anything. Perfect soft beef that wasn't too fatty, and chewy noodles that were the perfect texture. I could have definitely done a double order of the dumplings. There's only a couple of places that have chili oil that I like, and RHZ is getting added onto that list ASAP. Back to the bag, the little complaint bubbles are SO real. I think it's strange that people order from places where they aren't familiar with the flavors or types of food and give bad reviews because it's not up their alley or preferred palate. I see a lot of complaints about food from restaurants like this being "too spicy" as well and giving them a one star. The word "spicy" is seriously in the item descriptions! I'm not someone who can handle a ton of spice, but if I order a spicy food, I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. We went once in person which the portion of each dish is extremely small for the price they are asking ( Mao Cai is 18 dollars for covering 1/3 of a bowel), we liked the flavor so we re-ordered to-go with the family size (22 dollars), still extremely small, not much difference from the smaller size. I came here after going to the Lincoln Park Conservancy. We got the Chicken Wontons and Spicy Beef Noodles. The Chicken wontons were alright, nothing special. The broth was starchy, I'm assuming from the wontons. The spicy beef noodles, on the other hand, were good! They had a slight mala taste, the beef was tender and lean, and the noodles were tasty and filling! The broth was a bit too oily and salty, but it's up to personal preference. I was really looking forward to trying Royal Highness Zhu. I will say that the food was alright. It seemed like some of the dishes like the vegetable hot pot was not cooked all the way through and the sizzle sausage fried rice did not have any sausage in it. That is really disappointing. I will say the best dish I had was the zhong dumplings. The taste was really on point. I did make a reservation and the male server/ host was really rude and did not accept my reservation. That same male server told me that he was too busy too for a few requests we had. I am not sure if it was me but, he just seemed very rude. I will say the ambiance or atmosphere was really nice. I've been a frequent takeout customer of both Royal Highness Zhu and the downtown A Place by Damao. Royal Highness Zhu is by the Depaul campus. The interior is clean and modern, with a very casual vibe. I dropped by on a Sunday during the day. It was busy but no wait. I can imagine it gets quite busy during the weekend rushes. They take reservations. The dine in experience is efficient but isn't really "full service". The QR codes on the table pulls up the menu on Chowbus, and you order on your phone completely. The QR code menu however isn't quite a full menu and there aren't any descriptors for the menu items, you have to go to their website menu separately to read item descriptions. There is staff that will bring out the food for you and refill waters. We received paper cups for water when some other tables got real glasses, which was strange but not a huge deal. The menu is pretty traditional and has a lot of Chengdu dishes that you can't get at other restaurants, like maocai (premade mixed hot pot) which are my favorite. The volcano wontons are also a favorite. The spicy dishes here are very spicy and oily so be warned. In general, I think Royal Highness Zhu and A Place by Damao have really directed the majority of their energy to their delivery and takeout business. From the moment we walked in, we were transported to what feels like a sanctuary for indescribably delicious food. We were seated immediately, and directed to the Chowbus QR code to view the menu and order on our phones. I love it when restaurants use Chowbus! The restaurant is very nicely decorated and clean inside. Staff was kind and attentive. We ordered a bunch of dishes for my party of 7 and everything came out pretty fast! I just packed up my order from RHZ (door dash) and I'm sitting here just blissfully content. First time I've tried this spot for my chengdu fix and I will happily say that it outshined my prior go-to by a long shot. Everything was fantastic. Literally. I had the Bon Bon Chicken (Huge flavors and still VERY balanced. Chicken was perfectly cooked), Zhong Dumplings (ARE YOU FOR REAL?!), Crispy Golden Pork Strips (damn good flavor, crunch and unctuousness) and Pig Ear Treasures - SOOOOOO good. Great flavor, good crunch and texture (if you're into it) I did get some sesame balls as a treat and they were also wonderful. Nice paper thin crunch around an otherwise fluffy treat. Big fan. I went to Da Mao Jia in Bridgeport for the first time not too long ago, but unfortunately they were doing take out only. They did mention that this location had dine-in, though, so I had to come! Here's what we ordered: - heart broken bean jelly - 5/5 - SO good. This was my favorite. Their homemade chili oil is tasty - chengdu bean curd - 3/5 - I'm generally not a huge fan of the smoky flavor of this dish, but if you enjoy 豆腐花/this type of bean curd, this is pretty solid. Be warned: the soybeans in it are extremely crunchy - tomato noodle soup with beef - 4/5 - good, but not as flavorful compared to the chili oil in the bean jelly. Would definitely get the spicy version next time. - water jelly cake with black sugar - 4/5 - came for free with Yelp check-in! This was interesting and pretty good. Amazing spot for Chinese food near DuPaul. My friend and I stopped by and we ordered a bunch of various items off the menu. The portion sizes particularly for the Tomato Noodles with Fried Egg and the Wontons were huge! The highlight of the meal for me would be either the hand pulled noodles with peanut sauce or the Bon Bon Chicken. The chicken is served cold with lots of chili seasoning and paired perfectly with a side of white rice. The hand pulled noodles were perfectly soft, and the sauce was incredible as well. Chinese doesn't get any more authentic. Da Mao Jia is a place that isn't quite what it looks like. It's actually a modern hip looking place, but don't let the looks fool you. How about some of the craziest things you have ever eaten, as in brains and gizzards. There's luckily also things for vegetarians. A lot of Chinese restaurants have Americanized menus so it's less daunting. It's not like this here. They have a ton of authentic stuff. Forget about dumplings. It has way beyond that. Holy cow, literally, as you can eat cow brain. Of course I haven't, so when we went here I got something from the slim but good vegetarian friendly options. It's not cheap. This place is costly but it's so good though. Both of us got the Cheng Du Veggies In Hot Pot. It's $18, so it's pricy. This has glass noodles, mushrooms, seaweed knots, and tofu skin. It actually was a lot of food. The broth was thick, and it was more like a stew. Go for some authentic Chinese. It's the place to go for Chengdu dishes. I've been told from friends that are from Cheng Du or have visited how delicious and spicy the food there is, so I knew this was a restaurant I had to try (at least until I can make the journey to Cheng Du myself)! Let me start out by saying The Wonton Volcano Broth soup was literally just the cure I needed for my hang over. Spicy, yet with delicious, slightly sweet and fresh home made won tons! The flavors were intense, and yes, it made me sweat. Next came the tofu bean curd. I have to say this dish was my favorite. I loved the mix of flavors and textures; silky soft tofu, crunchy nuts, spicy chili oil... it was like a party in my mouth I didn't want to end. I also ordered the Cheng Du Magic chili in hopes of taking the heat up a notch. This was really just a snack, like mixed spicy and salty nuts. It would be great if you wanted something to nosh on with a beer, but not as exciting as the other dishes. Considering I ordered all these things and the bill was under $40, I have to say I really appreciate that they are keeping things affordable. While I am not quite adventurous enough to try some of the more "exotic" dishes like pig's feet, brains or intestines I do appreciate the authenticity to offer it. The Good Signature Spicy Beef Noodles was good as everyone says, Wonton in Volcano Broth was great, the wontons had plenty of filling so they must have listened to the criticism, and the Hot & Sour Fern Root Noodles were very refreshing to eat between the other spicy and savory dishes. The restaurant itself is nice and clean, service was friendly and accomodating. I like the options for ordering. The Not-so-Good Fiery Spicy Fries were undercooked so we took almost all of them home and put them in the air fryer to crisp them up but it was only a marginal improvement. Fiery and Flavorful BBQ Pork Ribs had too much season rub which was aggressive on cumin and throws the flavor off balance. I scraped off the excess seasoning from the leftovers and it was an improvement but definitely not worth $18 imho. We began ordering at 3:30 pm on a Friday and was told they were sold out of Bon Bon Chicken even though it was shown as available. I was really disappointed but also confused by how it could be sold out 90 minutes into being open and seems to be popular so why not enough on hand? There was another dish that sounded like a good alternative but it was sold out as well. There were no other chicken dishes besides soups but since we already ordered 2 we went with the fries, unfortunately. Lastly, I signed up for their loyalty program 3 days before dining in but they couldn't apply points because my phone number wasn't found. I just checked and my number wasn't saved for some reason. There's a Da Mao Jia in Bridgeport and I was so excited when I saw a sign that they were opening one up in Lincoln Park! I ordered take out during my visit. It looks like this location is only open for delivery and take out at this time. The interior is so airy, and contemporary. The large windows bring a lot of light to the dining area! It will be a comfortable restaurant to dine-in once they are ready to open up for indoor dining. I ordered the handmade Zhong dumplings and the bon bon chicken. I was so pleasantly surprised at how cute the take out packaging was! What made it even better was how delicious the food was! The dishes were portioned very generously. The Zhong dumplings had at least 7 or more in the container. The bon bon chicken (served chilled) was very refreshing for the summer days up ahead. First of all, this place is so cute! The decor is really cool and the ambiance in general is very calming. The music and all made me feel like I was at a spa. I can't get enough of noodles, especially on rainy days. It came down on Sun, gloomy, wet and cold...noodles were calling me. I came here for a late lunch, was able to order at the kiosk (love this option), it's so convenient. They offer a good amount of items on their menu, dry noodles, noodle soup, appetizers, stir fried items and even bubble tea. Once I ordered, I handed my ticket to the staff, got a seat, hot tea was brought out and I waited. The food came pretty fast, I was pretty excited to try my beef tomato noodle soup. The noodles were really fresh, soup was very authentic and they were generous with their portions. Generous to get you full but not stuffed. What I really liked about their soup broth was that it was clean, not oily, full of flavor and tasted like something that was made at home. It is wonderful to have a Chengdu style snack place in Lincoln Park. Unless the food is awful, and it isn't, this place is a net positive in the neighborhood just by existing. I ordered a big bowl of chicken broth rice, which came with a few mushrooms and chicken shreds but was really largely rice, which, fair. But the broth did not have the depth or richness that the menu described, which meant that the rice wasn't really 'steeping' in much to give it flavor once you had sipped the broth away and were left with only flavorless rice. My rice ended up being passed around the table for people to pour their leftover dumpling or hot pot or dry pot sauce or beef noodle broth on. My other dish, the soft tofu with roasted soybeans in chili oil, was better (if miniscule). As one of my dining partners said, it looks like Cream of Wheat. Luckily, it doesn't taste like it. I'm a sucker for silken tofu, I think it's the best way to soak up flavor, and even by itself it's great. I had some bites of other people's food (I came with a party of 12), and my brief impression: - Fiery spicy fries delight: Delicious, but unacceptably soggy - Handcrafted Zhong dumplings: Perfect wrapper, great sauce - almost no filling and it was gummy for some reason - Crispy golden pork strips: crispy but absolutely zero heat - Spicy beef noodles: probably the best thing on the table, with the broth a nice balance of rich and slightly spicy, handmade noodles with a chew to them. The service was wildly bad - they had no idea how to handle a large group. They weren't sure whether to have us order with a staff member or at a kiosk and changed their mind several times, so about half of us did one and half the other. I'm guessing due errors in duplication on their part, there ended up being a lot of dishes coming out that none of us ordered. We told them we didn't order the dishes, but they insisted on putting them on the table anyway, and then, annoyingly, they ended up on our bill! No apologies, no acknowledgement of their error. If you go alone or with just two or three other people, I'm sure you'll be fine, but definitely order at the kiosk so you have a written receipt with your order on it. read more

Considering all the different ethnic Asian restaurants, this place stands out as a must visit for anyone looking to expand their taste buds and a top destination I'll be recommending to friends. Okay this was a difficult review to make because I think RHZ is a 4-star place IF you know exactly what you are craving when you come here. I think the noodles and "cold appetizers" offer an authentic and nostalgic flavor that is hard to find in the Midwest. I think the spice levels is on the milder side, which i understand allows the business to serve a wider population. I would consider the price to be slightly more than what i was expecting considering the portion size. I've heard many good things about the other location in Bridgeport so I decided to pay a visit at this new location in Lincoln Park. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. First of all, on a Saturday evening around dinner time, two of the dishes we ordered were out so we went with their recommended dishes. Their signature ribs tasted old and fatty. The fries were extremely salty and buried in seasoning. Cute take-out packaging. Ambient was good - modern and clean. Cashier wasn't knowledge about their dishes. I had such a delicious meal here with unique and interesting flavors I don't often find in chicago. Everything was seasoned perfectly with an excellent amount of spice. I am not too familiar with Chengdu city street food, so I would say this is definitely a unique food stop for those in the area. Some items were sold out by the time we got there in the evening like the bean curd so maybe we missed out. The food we did try was fun. Prep was fast and display was cute, but overall food was average tasting to me. Szechuan flavor is sort of muted and some dishes were a bit too salty for my taste. Not sure about the style of dumplings but not much meat for the amount of wrap. Overall, the aesthetic was greater than the food, but there are many small plate options to try and share with friends. read more
