The building is dated, but it's perfectly good Chinese food! We got the generals chicken, Kung pao beef, and sesame chicken. All were great but not spicy at all. My 7 year old ate them all with no complaints. Huge portions! read more

Five years ago when I came here I anticipated awfulness given the Yelp reviews but was pleasantly surprised. A few days ago I revisited and have to say those Yelp reviews were right. Also, the emptiness of the place the whole time we were eating there should have tipped us off from the start. The meal starts with a basket of overfried wontons and sweet and sour sauce. Not my cup of tea (speaking of which - the meal comes with tea), but great if you like a basket of fried stuff. Hide it from the kids who will just keep eating and eating it. I remembered really liking the egg flower soup before, but this time no one liked it at all. It seemed heavy with cornstarch. Minced water chestnuts and peas might have helped, but the texture really needs some attention first. The broccoli chicken was okay. The fish with black bean sauce, however, was so salty we couldn't eat it. Plus, the fish didn't look fresh. Something was off. Pieces were discolored within the same piece. Was it frozen and then cooked? If you still decide to eat here after reading all the reviews from people warning you not to, I can share that at least five years ago I thought the chicken-heavy basil chicken (which includes bok choy, onions, and red bell peppers and needed more veggies) was decent. The service is pretty good. The servers stand in the corners at the ready, and are very efficient and there to help. But really, listen to the reviews. There must be somewhere better. read more

Really bad; the sad demise of a once great Longmont restaurant. There is not much I can say about this one. I would only set foot in here if you like to dine in and eat off of Styrofoam and plasticware. Wait staff was inattentive and nowhere near properly dressed for a restaurant. Please don't walk up to my table wearing a high-rise shirt in your belly hanging out. We had to ask twice for them to even bring us a plastic fork to eat our food with. The days of getting hot tea with your dinner service are over as well. We ordered our usual Staples but the sesame chicken was mostly blobs of gooey bread with no meat inside. What happened? Used to love Royal Wok. Picked up food at Royal Wok tonight, it's 5 minutes from my house. I was told food would be ready in 10 minutes. I left my house 10 minutes after placing my order and waited another 10 minutes in the restaurant for my pick up order. Only 1 couple seated in the restaurant. Food was way overcooked, I ordered extra spicy and got 2, count them, 2 red peppers in my meal. Wontons are overcooked to the point of not being able to even crunch them with my teeth and there was about 1/8 tsp. of anything inside! I ordered one meal and wontons on the side. Cost $21.00! Have been here a few times and everytime I come here the atmosphere/cleanliness is great the customer service is great and the food is delicious this time me and my husband went and tried a volcano for two and let me tell you it was freaking delicious! I don't care for Chinese food, so I can't comment on the authenticity or lack thereof of Royal Wok, but my choice of eating here and requisite review come thanks to a desperate need for a quick Christmas day lunch. Service wasn't at all friendly, however it was efficient. We hardly waited for our entrees to arrive, and were ushered out just as soon as we finished our plates. Call it efficiency at turning tables, or whatever you want. I didn't bother looking through the menu, as I am averse to all things in Chinese cuisine that are sweet/sticky/saucy/salty, etc., and unfortunately (or fortunately) Royal Wok is one of "those" Chinese locations. I went straight for the "For Your Good Health" section of the menu, where the dishes are purportedly prepared and served without salt, sugar, or corn starch "for a healthy, delicious meal." So from $7.95 to $10.95 you can choose from various proteins, which are paired with plentiful steamed veggies, and of course a pot of sticky white rice on the side. I chose the steamed tofu and hubby chose the chicken. True to the menu, there was neither salt nor sugar nor day-glo bright sauces, just a plate of veggies and our protein of choice. With some soy sauce and a dash of pepper, they actually weren't half-bad, hence the 3-star rating for a cuisine I'm still trying to find a liking for! Hubby also ordered a side of egg rolls (2), and could only eat one, so they probably weren't very good, and he is a fan of these sorts of Chinese joints. Okay, the Won Ton soup horrible. It was a bland, plain broth, with heavy won ton wrappers which were gummy and had a flavorless filling. I couldn't tell you what meat was in it but I think it was pork. So disappointing. My dog liked the won tons though. The Mongolian Beef tasted more like pepper beef. It's supposed to be spicy. It's like they forgot to add an ingredient. It did have a decent amount of beef which was tender and a good ratio of onions to beef. And it's missing the little white crispy noodles that are usually in a small amount at the bottom. I ate a few bites, looked for the noodles and since it was not spicy, I gave my dog a few pieces. (He liked it). Then, I put it in the refrigerator where it will probably sit for a while before I throw it away. I'm thinking of returning it to them (since it's full) and asking for a refund. I'm really dissatisfied. It's not Mongolian Beef! The Combination Pan Fried Noodles dish was fairly good. It had a surprisingly large amount of meat and shrimp with vegetables. The noodles were crispy in places and soft in others, but that's what I'm accustomed to. I'd have to say that it was the only thing in my order that was edible. That's why they got a second star or I'd have rated this restaurant with only one star. It came with fried rice, probably combination fried rice, but I'm not sure. I had one bite and it was okay, but I never had a second bite. That went in the refrigerator too. I might use it with an egg dish for breakfast someday. Or, it'll go in the trash or the dog bowl. The restaurant appears nice and large but there's no table service during COVID-19, just take out. There were no cars in the parking lot except the same white car I saw parked on the side the day before. Maybe an employee car? During the time I waited for my order, about 15 minutes, at 2pm, I saw 2 take out orders picked up, which surprised me as the parking lot always looks so empty! I haven't driven by there during the lunch hour though. It looks so abandoned. The neon "open" sign is on a side window and should be on the front door. I thought it was closed down every time I drove on Main St. The man who took my order actually told me he didn't recommend two items I chose. And they didn't have eggplant for the Eggplant in Garlic sauce which the man who took my order said was good. I will try other Chinese restaurants in the area as this one is not very tasty or up to my expectations. My dog got lucky. He ate more of the order than I did. $30 mostly wasted. Usually the food is very good and the price isn't bad either. However, they must be running low on vegetables because my Cashew Chicken only had celery in it last night. Don't get me wrong, the celery was good, but I like all the other vegetables too... The entrée portion sizes are big enough to split into 2 meals or share with someone. Lost our online order. Couldn't get a call through until 2.5 hours after order was placed and was told the system had been down. They looked up our order and said it never made it to the kitchen. Said it would be another hour to prepare it - not sure why they wouldn't expedite our order. Super annoyed that now I have to figure out something for dinner for some starving and grumpy kids. Very rude, made an order and didn't receive what we ordered. Talk to a lady on the phone and she put me on hold and then disconnected the line. When I called back a male answered and he told me "that's how is and there is no refund", then hung up. They switched the Dumpling with Wontons. There Wontons taste like yesterdays, soggy and loaded with oil. We don't like there wontons and ask for our money back on the dumpling and they refused. Upgrades rarely equal an overall downgrade, but as unfortunate as it is, this is the case for the once pleasant, Royal Wok. Royal Wok had humble beginnings, a small family restaurant in the parking lot of the local Longmont K-Mart. They started with tables and mismatched dishes, every time you went in for a bite to eat, they seemed to have worked their way up to something new, like maybe better table cloths. It was cute, local and the food was a solid "OK". The service was so personal; as regulars before the move into a rebuilt structure, the manager knew us on sight and would even bring us free crab cheese wantons. It was a nice little place for a nice little meal. Fast forward a few years. While certainly, the new building is pretty to look at inside and out, the quality of service and food has declined immensely. Everything seems dry or bland, the sesame chicken is soggy, as though it's been sitting on a steamer for days and the servers don't even attempt to converse with you, they don't even smile, it's like everyone has chopsticks up their asses. I can only give the Royal Wok 2 stars for fond memories and for the creepy little ginger kid with bad teeth sitting behind us, eating the cream cheese out of everyone's wantons. Only in Longmont. I would normally not even admit to having entered a place like this...the standard "Chinese" nightmare that you find all across our country with words like "Tasty", "Wok", "Golden", "Yum", "Palace", etc. in the name on big yellow signs with red lettering...but especially in small towns. This stuff is so NOT Chinese food...I wish someone would come-up with a better term for this Americanized deep-fried everything where every stinkin table is loaded with obscene deep fried puffs of cream cheese with Day-Glow pink gel-dip and other such nastiness. Where 80% of all items are deep-fried lumps of (fill in your sale 'meat' of the day) that are slathered with gelatinous slimes of only slight differing flavors and colors...none of which naturally occur in nature...EW. Everyone looked depressed...or at least in serious need of a blood pressure cuff and defibrillator on standby. The "manager" ran around scowling (probably pissed that she was gonna be late to open her nightime nail makeover salon) and looking generally scary. Aaanyway...pardon the rant...but since I am so rarely up in Longmont (I do not even recognize it any longer) I guess this is just a blast into space...and my friends up there all said it was the best Chinese place in town...OMG! Maybe "Royal Wok means "Run from the building with your hands waving above your head", in Mandarin. However, there ARE some decent dishes to be found in places like this...but you need to identify something close to edible and then triple-check that they can modify it and hope to goodness they have someone from China in the back who gets it. Da Kernal tells it like it is without the cutie verbiage. This is the best "Chinese" food in Longmont. My two amigos with the poor ratings must have not eaten there recently. I've been to over 78 cities in 19 countries and understand why the illuminate complain that "foreign fare" restaurants aren't authentic. Way too many of us in the USA don't like the taste of authentic foreign fare. Unfortunately these places must serve more than the 147 people that 'demand' truly real live no kidding authentic food. I will admit that the "spicy" items on the menu are not really spicy so my wife always asks them to kick it up a notch & they deliver. The pork & beef dishes are very good. Be careful of menu prices. There is a sign near the register saying something to the effect that actual prices might be different than menu prices. Not sure why that should be. Ordered take out, while at store, and bill came to much more than I thought it should be. I asked to have an entree removed from order to bring down cost and they said they could not do this because they did not have the code. This was during order entry phase, food not even cooked yet. I asked them to cancel order and start a new one and again they could not do this. Got food home and realized they had wrong food. Drove back to get correct food. I'm irked by stingy restaurants. Specifically, Chinese restaurants that only give you one bowl of rice. More specifically, Chinese restaurants that charge you for extra rice when it costs pennies for pounds. Nothing we had this night will call us to return. The eggrolls were flavorless and greasy; didn't even finish mine. When the Happy Family arrived at our table, I knew I was in for a bland meal. Every thing had a dull brown sheen to it, that sauce lacked flavor and depth. The scallops were tender, but what good is that without flavor. Even the red sweet and sour sauce that they served with the free fried wonton chips lacked that tangy sourness that gets those saliva glands workin'. I'm on a quest you guys, I'm on a serious hunt for GOOD FLavorFUL Chinese food. Not Thai or VIetnamese, or Japanese, but CHINESE food . The chinese here is fairly decent, although it has changed in flavor of the same dishes over the years and some of them have begun to go downhill or are just mostly bland. In terms of portions if you order something with seafood you can expect to get mostly vegetables with a few shrimp. The last Kung Pao Shrimp I ordered I only got 4 shrimp with about a pound of vegetables, so it really wasn't worth the price. Majority of the dishes seem to be that way as of late. Majority of their appetizers are very good, and the pu pu platter is something we order almost every time with everything it comes with being pretty good. As far as service goes, I would say there is great room for improvement as the service is usually pretty hostile in a sense and they get angry if you need to omit an ingredient for food allergy which is pretty unfortunate. Then even if they agree there is a good chance you'll get it anyways and your entire meal is inedible. Pricing is pretty decent if not batter than most places so that is a major advantage and thusly you can expect to wait if you try to eat here around dinner time as it will be packed. Overall having eaten here sparingly over the last decade this being one of the better options of chinese there are better ones in the area to go to with better food and service. read more

This is absolutely my favorite Chinese restaurant in Longmont. (And many surrounding cities too, for that matter.) The food is delicious and prepared to order. The staff is super fast and friendly and you will often find the next course of your meal coming out before you are done with the current one. They aren't trying to rush you. They just want to serve you quickly and efficiently. I have been eating at this restaurant for about 20 years. I can honestly say that the food quality has remained consistently good throughout this time and that is a testament to the Chefs and ownership. Not many restaurants stay open this long, let alone expand and grow into larger facilities. At this point, half of what I eat here is nostalgia (owing to the many blissful years I have spent eating here) but even objectively, this is a great restaurant. read more

I hate to do this but have to add to the chorus of 1 star reviews. We used to order from Royal Wok at least once a month and very much enjoyed it. We moved across town about 9 months ago and, because of COVID, started looking for delivery restaurants. Having been happy with this place in the part, we ordered from them. Yuck! Something has really changed. Everything we got was bland. The order took two hours to get here for starters. It was warm on arrival but tasted like cardboard. We were shocked. The shrimp toast had no shrimp on it and, in fact, I think it was sesame toast, despite us paying for shrimp toast. The hunan beef had a pepper next to it on the menu (so should be at least mildly spicy, right?) but it was not just spiceless but also flavorless. Everything else in our order was bland also. We tried flavoring them with the accompanied plum, soy, and mustard sauces but none improved the flavor. In the end I had a chemical aftertaste in my mouth. So sad, cause we used to love this place but Royal Wok is dead to us. They won't be receiving any more of our hard earned money. read more

I used to order from Royal Wok, and dine in, at least once a month when it was a "hole in the wall" joint. I didn't expect gourmet, authentic Chinese; simply a great value, tasty, and fresh version of American Chinese, and I was seldom disappointed. Nice service, too. I have ordered take-out several times since their move to the more upscale premises and have been very disappointed. What went wrong? Did they spend so much on the new building that they had to sack all the staff who could cook and hire cheap labor? Not only did I get a wrong dish, missing items, and higher prices last time I ordered, but the food was over-cooked, too salty, and lacking the right flavors. The moo shu pork was just awful, almost inedible, and that's a dish I have ordered many times from Royal Wok, so it told me a lot about how badly they have lost the plot. I always hate dumping a restaurant after years of loyalty, but I threw the take-out menu away today. I hope they get back on track. Warning: Do not eat at an Asian restaurant where Asians do not eat at. Our server was fine. He seemed a bit run down, but I can imagine in that restaurant, everything and everyone must be. That poor kitchen crew... I can only imagine what it's like behind their closed doors. The food was severely less than mediocre. The restaurant smelled of burnt hair for awhile during our meal, which we thought was strange. I barely touched my meal. The inside of my eggroll was grey and slimy. I presume it was filled with cabbage, but I'm not quite sure in retrospect, and my entree had no flavor what so ever. It was just brown. Besides the awful food, another thing that really did it for me was when we were cashing out, a woman, who I believe was as least partial owner, let someone cut ahead of us to make a take out order and completely ignored us when we thanked her. We didn't even get a head nod or eye contact. Nothing. She is clearly there solely to make money. Maybe if the food was better and she recognized her patrons for spending money at her establishment, it would be more than just a gross "Chinese" restaurant in Longmont, CO. read more

To say the chicken was not very crispy would be a vast understatement and like my wife's plate the Szechuan beef veggies also very soggy, I have had crisper veggies at a Chinese buffet. I just recently started coming back here (new location for a while now) after moving back to Longmont, and I remember absolutely loving the food here. The new location is good for them, definitely an upgrade and a place where the kitchen can't heat up the entire dining area. Since I've been back the food has been generally as good (lo mein seems to have taken a hit, but the egg drop soup is still fantastic). The service is very friendly (aside from the lady at the front who is so brusque and bitter that it has always been a bit laughable rather than a cause for genuine concern). And even when it's quite busy, there is hardly a wait on tables or orders. Overall, great (greasy, Americanized) Chinese food. I love it! read more

I am not sure where to start on this place. We ordered carry out and upon walking in for the first time it was set up like every other Chinese spot. Get home break out the goods and upon taking a bite of the chicken fried rice all I taste is fish so I figure why not try another maybe just a different taste but nope fish taste again. The Mongolian beef had one scallion in it and it was slimy and seemed to be rotten and the meat was so so. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone I have given up on Chinese food in Longmont have yet to find even half way decent place. Save your money stay away from here. read more

Don't waste your money. I have had their food before and it was mediocre, today it was just plain lousy, no flavor, and no spiciness. The hot & sour soup had zero 'hot' (no spice) and not much flavor. They must have been out of garlic as the vegetables in garlic sauce had no garlic flavor and it had been requested no sweetness for sauce and it was very sweet. These were lunch specials and they put the egg roll in with the other stuff so it was very soggy, no cream cheese wonton, four soggy chips, plus no fortune cookies included even though it says they are. It was a shame our favorite place "Colorado Wok' in Louisville is closed on Tuesdays as we just had a hankering for Chinese food so we went to Royal Wok, unfortunately this was not the place to go to, won't be back and don't recommend it. read more
