I can't say enough good things about this business. My tire picked up a nail while I was out riding nearby. They were very busy when I walked in with my bike. They originally said they'd fix my flat in 2 hours, but took pity on me because I had a long ride home. Roy's is an amazing shop! They have the small family owned and operated feel yet offers high quality services you'd expect for a larger retail store. I stopped by on a Wednesday 30 minutes before closing and John and Mike took the time to talk with me and asked what I was looking for and what would fit my riding style. There was no pressure sales just valuable information. We discussed the options available in store same day as well as additional bikes that were coming in later in the week. I returned Saturday morning to test ride the bike I was interested in and was treated by another member of the team (Ryan). He held the same values as John and Mike which made this experience so much more comforting. I decided to pull the trigger and purchased a Specialized Turbo Levo. What a great decision! They custom tubes the suspension to fit my weight/riding style and also triple check the bike component's to make sure nothing was over looked. While I was waiting for the tune to be finished, Ryan introduced me to the staff so I can feel comfortable when I return to the shop for future services. Initially friendly staff, but not transparent in fees. I called in to ask if a smaller size tire tube for a child's bike was in stock and learned yes, it was priced at $9.99. I drove down to the shop with my flat tire and was greeted nicely and helped right away. The person helping asked, "do you want me to change that for you", and I said, "thanks that would be great". Upon payment, the total for 2, 12" bike tubes was ~$32. Confused and having only brought just enough cash, I learned they charged nearly $10 just to put in the new tire tube. I couldn't buy the second tube because they charged labor for the 5 minute tube change. I wasn't offered my receipt and the entire transaction was uncomfortable. Come to find 2 tubes for $10 on Amazon is the standard. I felt somewhat taken advantage of in that moment. Update: I appreciate the reach out from Patricia. In reply, there is no clear signage of service charges near the register nor on the counter. I've visited bike shops and big chains that have offered similar services to be included with a purchase; it is not unheard of. The shop is very busy with products, and clear signage and/or an agreement of costs prior to check out would prevent this from happening (example, I understood each tire to be $9.99 prior to coming into the store and prior to checking out). Again, I appreciate Patricia's reach out and wish all the best for the business. I'll add one star for the online presence to mediate the situation. read more

Like most, the pandemic drove me to get a bike and get some much needed exercise. I got my bike at Roy's Cyclery and I can't express how amazing they have been with the purchase and since. I'm new to road bikes and the multiple times I have brought my bike in since they have been so nice about answering questions I have that I imagine were pretty simple stuff. They didn't make me feel dumb and literally put it up on a jack and showed how things work and the best way to keep my bike in great shape. They even offered free tune ups which i didn't realize you needed for a bike until I owned. The best thing I can say is that they run their business like an old style business where when you purchase something they value the money you spent on a bike and try to provide you with the service you would expect on an item you spent $1k+ on. My husband has been in the market for a new Specialized Roubaix for a couple of months, but like most things these days, they were in short supply. Cut to yesterday morning, when the guys at Roy's called to say they had one in stock. We jumped in the car and made the 90 mile drive to their awesome shop in the super cute old town area of Upland. We were helped by John, and when I say "helped" that is not a strong enough word for the assistance and advice he provided. We were in the shop for over 3 hours, while my husband shopped for all of the accessories. John did not take any shortcuts in explaining the pros and cons of each item under consideration. From time to time, some of the other staff would chime in, and they were all extremely helpful and friendly. The hubby does very little for himself, and is always doing for others, so to see the smile on his face when he left with that killer bike and all of the gear he needed to have great rides in complete comfort...well, it's hard to say how much that means to me. This morning, he had his first 20 mile ride on the new Roubaix and he loved it. The best gift I could receive is knowing that my husband is happy and taking good care of his physical and emotional health via bike rides. Aside from all of this, the shop is incredible. There was a lot of foot traffic comprised of folks shopping for bikes and accessories, drop offs and pickups for repairs and maintenance, you name it. I took 2 bikes i had in storage to get back to functioning order before the ciclavia event in dtla the next morning. I paid $50 total. I'm not sure what the price breakdown was but they changed a chain and either pumped up and/or replaced all 4 tubes on the tires of the bikes. I think the pricing was fair and the bikes worked like champs the next day. I felt like the guy that i initially spoke to about the bikes was nice but a little absent minded. He got my number and said he would call when the bikes were ready. I called an hour before they closed since i hadn't heard from him and he said, "yeah they've been ready and we close in less than an hour so hurry down!." If i hadn't checked to see when they closed and called, I highly doubt that he would have called and I prob wouldn't have gotten the bikes and missed the event. It's not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. But i think (if you're reading this) its a great idea to call if you say you will OR tell customers to call you so there is no confusion. I'm not a bike person and i dont know the bike fixing schedule, so I dont know what a reasonable wait time is. Other than that, great service and great repairs. If you are bike person looking for any kind of gear, i highly recommend checking this place out. Tons of bikes and accessories and gear. I lost a dear friend about a year and a half ago , his name was Kelly wong an LA City fire fighter that lost his life on a training accident he is survived by his wife and his 2 year old son Colton . There was a fund raiser for Kelly's wife and Colton , the owner of Roy's reached out and wanted to donate a specialized Stryder bike to get Colton up on two wheels . Classic old town upland bike shop. I went in, it took awhile for anyone to even greet me, finally a teenage salesperson approached me , let me test ride a bike. Wouldn't even budge on the price, put together a deal , or even try. There was an older guy there he deferred to but even he was unwilling to discuss a good deal. I never pay full price for anything in the retail world. I'm going to buy a bike, a helmet, a pump, a water bottle, a cage for the water bottle, other accessories and you can't put together a feel good package price? I was referred by a friend to get my bike tuned here. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. When they were working on my bike they noticed there was a crack in the rear frame, so I had to get a new one. If they didn't notice it would of been real bad on the trail if it broke on me. Once I got the new rear frame I took the bike back for a tune up, Johnny has been really friendly and helped me setup my rear shock.
