We love Roy's and always try and visit his restaurants if there is one close by. We have been to San Francisco, Anaheim and Desert Ridge. Love his food. We have been to the one here in Kaanapali several times. We just arrived in Maui and had dinner here. I of course made reservations which is the norm no a days with COVI and how busy restaurants are right now, reopening. We were seated right away in a table facing the golf course. The food shines at this establishment...however, what lacks is the environment. Money from the high cost of the drinks/meals needs to be reinvested into the building. If you let go of your bias of being on Maui, this is a mediocre club house ambiance with less than average food and a view of a fairway with traffic on there back side (no ocean). The rib eye was cooked too hot and the medium rare was not good; over cooked edges, raw middle. The mushrooms tasted dirty. The local fish duo with shrimp and red Thai curry was mediocre at best. The strip mall Thai restaurant in Coeur d'Alene ID is 10x better. There was almost no sauce, the flavor was weak. It was mostly rice with grilled Mahi Mahi that was fairly dry. The book choy was not good. They left the tough part of the root on and under cooked it . Almost all fish is farm raised Atlantic trash. The wine list was a reasonable markup for a restaurant. The chocolate souffle was ok-- kind of gritty and the sauce was more like Hershey's syrup. The Trader Joe's molten lava cake is far better. Service was average. At 1/3 the price it would be OK (not great), but at $120 a plate it was a rip off. We visited 5 other places at half the price that were far better. read more

This was a spot that one of my friends really wanted to go to while we were in Kaanapali. My friends and I went during Happy Hour (2-3 pm). We got $5 mimosas and $5 appetizers (calamari, ribs, and ahi poke). The appetizers are quite small but they were very good! For my meal, I got the tuna roll which was filling and very tasteful. I honestly don't think I got sick of eating tuna from this trip. My friends and I also got chocolate cake to share. We always come to Roy's when in Maui because it never fails to be a great dining experience. Just perfect food, every time. I always order seafood because that's just what you do when in Hawaii but my daughter had the filet which was truly a perfect filet. My husband ordered the short ribs which were also next level. My favorites are the macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi & misoyaki butter fish. I'm not sure if I can pick between the two. Next time I visit I might just order both. We were in such a good mood that we took ridiculous pictures of ourselves and also clapped for ourselves after finishing our plates. The Roy's experience has gone WAYYYY downhill. The short ribs my husband were nothing special for $50. I ordered the misoyaki butterfish and it was drowning in glazes and sauces. You could hardly enjoy the fish. The ambience since switching locations was an unbelievable let down. We felt like we were eating in a cafeteria at a retirement home. It was ghost town in there. We saw office clips holding light fixtures together. Our server was very nice, but lacked what seemed like the maturity that comes with serving at a fine dining restaurant. From the moment we sat down, our waiter was fantastic. He was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the various items on the menu but still, even recommending his favorite. I ordered a mocktail which was refreshing and possibly one of the best I've had. My partner doesn't like fish which given it's Hawaii, he's been limited to some variation of steak. They had meatloaf which tasted like "comfort" according to him. I ordered the butterfish which was also comfort food yet light. The price point some have complained about highly varies depending on where you live. I believe it is similar to other Hawaii possibly slightly higher but not by much. Dined at Roy's with my husband and two children tonight. It's located on a golf course. The views are nothing noteworthy, but the service and food were top notch. I really like the prefixed "keike" menu. It came with an appetizer, choice of entree, and ice cream. Much to the delight of my children, the appetizer came right away. The server was very attentive. I ordered the fried chicken and he ordered the short rib. Out of the two, the fried chicken tasted much better. It was packed with flavor! The breading had a lemon/lime taste to it which worked well. What a lovely dinner we enjoyed here! I'd been to Roy's in San Francisco, but it was not very memorable. Reading the reviews, I had no real expectations for our Maui dining experience but they hit it out of the park! We started with the complimentary edamame and a spicy (not too spicy) ahi sushi roll, washed down with Hawaiian-Tinis for all. Our entrees arrived shortly thereafter; Misoyaki Butterfish and Jade Pesto Steamed Mahi Mahi. My Butterfish was tender and tasty. The Mahi Mahi, which was served in a broth with Udon noodles, was a surprise delight! We all got a taste and it earned our 5-star approval. I would recommend either dish depending on your taste. Of course we had to end with a Dark Chocolate Soufflé. This little lava cake was very rich, served with a wonderful vanilla bean ice cream. Came here for dinner with the hubby hoping for a repeat of the wonderful meal and experience we had had at the Roy's in Oahu. We've always had good experiences in the past at several different Roy's stateside, but it's different here in Hawaii and we were excited to be back. We were pretty disappointed with the whole experience from the ambiance, service, to the food. Everything fell short and we will certainly not be back to this location. The interior looks like it used to be a Denny's (or something similar) and all they did was put up a few Hawaiian inspired decorations. It's okay to take over a space, but it really needed to be completely remodeled from ceiling to floor to make it feel luxurious since this is supposed to be an upscale restaurant. Here's a breakdown of our meal. Spicy ahi sushi roll - deep fried, okay. Crunchy, but rather tasteless. Crispy furikake crusted calamari Caesar salad - tasty but very few calamari (only 3 pieces) and huge bed of lettuce Seafood collection - 3 mussels, 3 clams, 2 prawns with heads (overcooked and tough), 2 scallops (not whole, just little pieces, but cooked perfectly), risotto undercooked and flavorless, spinach was good Short ribs and grilled salmon - very dry; over cooked and over salted Chocolate soufflé - not a soufflé. Actually a molten lava cake which tasted fine Maui Gold upside down pineapple cake - smelled and tasted BURNT, as if they scraped off the burned portion and still served it. Mind you, this is ordered ahead of time and the server offered to make another one, but it would take 40 minutes to be ready. We declined having a new one made and they comp'd the cake. Once a dessert is burnt, the pastry chef should know that the taste permeates the entire dessert and should not serve the dish. Best to have just told us the truth and offer to make another with additional wait or offer a different dessert rather than allow someone to put something so offensive in their mouth. read more

This location has an unimpressive, low level, ambiance even for a restaurant sharing a building with a public golf course. Seems more like a diner than a high priced restaurant. More importantly, our meals were also disappointing. The fish dishes did not seem fresh and certainly compared unfavorably to all the other, similarly priced, Maui restaurants we enjoyed.
