I told them we were there celebrating an anniversary and they didn't acknowledge it in any way. Why ask in the reservation? They were out of the filet mignon and didn't tell us until after we ordered drinks. That was what everyone was planning on ordering so that was inconvenient. The ribeye for one of our party members was overcooked. They offered a new one, but waiting again for one person would have meant the rest of the food would be cold. My in-laws wanted to treat my wife and I to a nice dinner while we were on vacation together at a near by resort. They selected Roy's based on its long reputation, and it did not disappoint. First off, I must say, our server was absolutely amazing and she went above and beyond! She made our visit an extra special event. We felt so welcomed and taken care of. Her recommendations were excellent and led us to selecting items we might not have otherwise (and we were so glad we did). The food was all delicious and flavorful. We started with a few cocktails and a couple appetizers, which was plenty of food for 4 people. The Ribs were so tender and sticky decadent. We each ordered a variety of entrees from the seafood section of the menu (when in Rome). The portions were large and would easily be shared amongst two if needed. Everything was cooked to perfection, tender was the word of the evening. Each plate was also precisely plated and was as such a feast for the eyes. The Butter fish was so sweet and moist and, well, buttery. The ahi melted in the mouth and was so fresh. The shrimp was spicy and rich. The Mahi-mahi pesto was so bright and flavorful. We finished the evening with a molten chocolate soufflé, which came with a smear of raspberry purée and a petite vanilla scoop. It came fresh from the oven and was the perfect sweet bite to finish the meal. We all left very satisfied and stuffed. Had a fantastic experience. To start, let's be frank--for a family group of seven, it's been difficult (a polite description) to find Lahaina-area restaurant reservations within a week. We were able to snag space at Roy's within several days ahead of time. I think that, just like Guinness, Roy's gets better the closer you are to the original location. I don't remember the butterfish tasting quite as good in San Diego or San Francisco. The textures of the calamari, ahi and butterfish were delightful. So my mom called all the restaurants on the island and found none were able to seat our family of 5 for the entire week. But then, a restaurant called back and said they had a cancellation the next day so they could seat us if we came at 6pm. The last restaurant she called was Roy's and so she thought it was Roy's. The restaurant did not specify their name. So we went to Roy's, only to figure out that they never called her, and we didn't have a reservation at all. Reservations were made months ago for our wedding anniversary. We were escorted to the north 40 the very last table in the very last corner facing the emergency exit. There was no music or ambience. We passed by five beautiful tables On the rail. We were brought back to Christina's section I believe they just needed to fill her section. I spoke to the hostess and the waitress and eventually we were offered a table which was literally one table over from the overflow section but still in Christina's section. Christina was very nice and knew what she was doing however no attention was given towards our long-standing reservation and special occasion. Calamari was excellent. Caesar salad was overdressed. The recommended macadamia nut red snapper was beyond marginal. Over cooked in old oil and the macadamia nuts were indiscernible. They took these entrées off of our bill. however our experience at Roy's was so poor we will never go back again. We have owned a place in Lahaina for 25 years. I knew I wanted to come to Roy's for my birthday, and my experience here was great! Our server, Junior, was very attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. He also had such a calming voice. I went for the Chilean sea bass with udon as my main course, and it was a huge portion! It was very tasty, too. Shrimp pasta was good- huge shrimp and lots of it. Kids meal- the seared white fish was hard, overcooked, could bounce off the plate, dry anc bland. The butter noodles was not good. It was soupy and had a sour aftertaste. Butter, noodles and salt.... Shouldn't be soupy and the noodles were over cooked. Good news is her really liked the cheese quesadilla and filled up on those. Call in advance to make a reservation. Their furikake calamari was perfectly crispy and battered. Butterfish had amazing texture, but I was not a fan of their sauce ( way too sweet). Their macadamia nut crusted Mahi Mahi was cooked perfectly, it was just missing salt. Overall, if you are staying close by at Roy's, I would definitely say give it go. I can't believe this is the same place as all the good reviews. I also can't believe I pumped this place up to my family, as it was a huge letdown. We had a 4:00 pm reservation - the only time we could get with a month's notice (similar to every restaurant in the area right now). No big deal, as this was our first full day on the island, and our body clocks were still on central time. The place is next to a golf course, across from what looks like a pro shop, and honestly the interior looks like an old and worn clubhouse. A little dark and dingy, with no frills decor. Our waiter was a nice enough guy, and one reason why this is not a one star review. Took drinks, explained the menu, and made us feel welcome. Now the food. We started with the Blackened Island Ahi appetizer. It seemed fresh, but there was just not much flavor. It had some ginger and spicy mustard that was less than spicy. Just ok. Then on to the mains. I had told my family about all the great, fresh in Maui. It would certainly be that at Roy's, right?? Most of us ordered the Macadamia Nut Crusted Local Catch, which was Au. It was described as a meaty fish, similar to Marlin (which I've had many times). Everything on the plate - potatoes, asparagus, butter sauce - was great - except the fish! Now, none of us knew what "Au" meant, but my wife accurately decoded the name to mean "overcooked chicken", as that was exactly what it tasted like. $45 a plate for that??? Awful. Our waiter asked how it was, and we told him that it was very dry. His answer to that (and the only down point for him that day)? "I can bring you more sauce." Yeah, that's what solves the problem of overcooked, dry fish. Bury it in more sauce. My son had the Jade Pest Steamed Local Catch, and I cannot remember the fish, but he said it was great. The other reason for two stars. On to dessert, which had been talked up by the waiter. Two desserts, a Chocolate Ganache Cake and a Pineapple Upside down cake, each take 20 minutes of preparation, so we had ordered several ahead of time. I had the pineapple cake. I don't know what it takes to remove the pineapple flavor from pineapple, but somehow they managed to do it. More disappointment. I don't know how the chocolate cake was. I was too disgusted and angry to ask the rest of the family. At that point I just wanted to get out of there. For the price and reputation of Roy's I expect not good, but great. This was awful. Wow! Talk about not judging a book by its cover. We we're planning our 27 year girls trip anniversary dinner and Roy's was the only place we could get in. When we arrived we thought it was just going to be your typical "golf course dining restaurant". The service was top notch and the food was phenomenal! I know this is one of your restaurants but you really need to do something about the food coming out of this kitchen. I ordered the meat loaf. It was cold. My wife ordered the Opa and it didn't taste fresh at all. Very fishy. So she ordered the crab cakes. They were worst. Looked like they were frozen and dropped into the fryer. Very bad. The food was amazing as usual. The service was a bit slow. There were four tables that had guests and no hostess to be seen. The bartender greeted us and said that the hostess would be right out. I must say it was well over eight minutes before anyone other than the bartender had k ow we were there waiting. Our waitress was friendly but not what we are used to when visiting the Roy's in Hawaii Kai. Not only was the food AMAZING, our server Michael made our first night in Maui even more special. We came to Maui for my boyfriend's birthday, he ended up surprising me with an engagement. Let me start by saying WOW!!!! My girlfriend and I had plans for her birthday here in Maui that fell through at the last minute. Scrambling to find a way to fix this for her, I quickly started looking for another top shelf restaurant. A quick search of what was around us revealed Roy's. I called the restaurant and the lady on the phone squeezed us in between reservations on the sheer promise we would be there in ten minutes. We arrived and were greeted as long time customers / friends. We were seated and the staff jumped into action. Menus, specials, drinks, appetizers. We ordered the spicy ahi sushi, filet mignon, and chocolate soufflé . The food arrived and it was nothing short of heaven. We started going to this location seven years ago. If there's a Roy's there's us. Consistency is important in any business. You got that with Roy's dishes and as well as decor. I ordered a Rib Eye that's beautifully plated, seasoned well and like magic arrived at our table per our order; medium rare. The sauce was amazing. In fact it was so simple just the way I like it-peppercorn. It complements the meat. There was a bit of a snafu with the check but it's minor. It was fixed before we left by a very nice lady. The decor. It's not major but I think it's time to spice it up a bit. It is consistently the same decor which equates to boring. This is one consistency that doesn't need to be. Same old same old means you're stagnant and almost lazy. The Old Fashion as my imbibe I'll skip next time. I really like Roy's. So if they stick to the same decor say for another decade I'll still dine with them but I'm hoping they will evolve and grow. Just move a few tables here and there and freshen up the paint. The fried chicken has chunks of flour/batter in it and the butterfish was rubbery. I have been to the Roy's on Oahu and in California and this is not like this. It's not worth the price when you can go anywhere for good fish here for even cheaper. Go to Mamas Fish House for this price, it's much better. The service was bad too. We both sat with empty drinks and done with our dinner for 15 mins until someone came back to ask if we needed anything else. Had an early dinner in October during COVID. They took many tables and chairs out of their dining room so tables could be more spread out. All the employees wore masks and hand sanitizers were readily available when you first walk in. This Roy's location has been consistently good (in terms of both food and service) in the many years I have come here. We got the calamari for appetizer, miso butterfish and macnut mahi-mahi/seared ahi combo for our mains and pineapple upside down cake and the souffle for desserts. We enjoyed everything we have ordered and seriously the dessert was to die for. They also offer children's menu. What a fantastic experience this was. We ate at Roy's on our last night in Maui and this was probably the best total meal experience we've had on our 11 night trip. Service: Beau was our server and not only was he great at the traditional service, he was amazing with our two kids. Fun jokes and magic tricks made a fancy meal fun for our children. He even brought out a special dessert to finish out our trip. Service was 15 out of 10 - couldn't have been better. Food: we started with the blackened ahi appetizer and the Caesar salad, and both were fantastic. Make sure you savor every bite of that ahi. For dinner, we had the blackened mahi mahi and the fish of the day. Both were delicious. Kids had the buttered pasta and the short ribs. Plates were empty.
