We waited and waited and waited for our food. We arrived at 7 o'clock. The table that walked in after us got served. 8 o'clock rolls around. We finally get our food. One plate at a time. Our server delivered drinks, ten minutes after we ordered them, and chips and salsa 10 minutes after that. Did not come back to check on us at all. No checks on our drinks at all. Terrible service. 8:05 the table that arrived at 7:15 leaves having finished their meal. We had to sit through lady wrestling, guys wrestling, then boxing on the Spanish station. Very inappropriate for a family restaurant. Now the food. Chile was appropriately spicy, but no flavor. Food was greasy, chicken enchiladas the chicken was burnt. The tacos were not hard at all. My daughter's chicken strip was huge and quite good she said. Iced tea was watery and strange tasting. All in all if you must have Mexican food and you don't mind an hour's wait go ahead. I really enjoy local places like this in Abq. Really good Mexican food, I got a carne aside burrito that was fantastic. I got really good and fast service, I enjoyed being able to see the cook making things to order so I'd knew it'd be hot and good when I got it! The atmosphere could be a little more aesthetically pleasing, but the food and service is more than enough to get me to go back and try more of the menu. :) read more

Love it! I cannot decide which food to order, so to be safe and I also have a little pig in me, I ordered the a la carte combo plate which has chili relleno, beef enchilada, crispy taco with rice, beans and green chili on the side. Good thing I said green chili on the side because there's some zing already in the different foods I got but I like it. I didn't need to add the green chili unless I want my sinuses cleared. The food tasted great, just right to my taste. There's free chips of course and spicy salsa dip. The chips are warm, the food was a little hot in temperature, which is awesome, meaning freshly made food. The place is small with cafeteria atmosphere. Some people like it, it does not really matter much to me as long as I get to chow down good food, yeah! read more

The food is awful here. Just awful. Ruben's belongs on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. They seem to take no pride in the food there, as everything they serve was clearly old, dried out, and not fresh, and seem to have no respect for their customers, since they serve terrible food and overcharge for it. I could feel my heart drop and fill with a sense of dread as soon as they brought out some thick, greasy, dark brown "tortilla chips" and their weak, jarred salsa. These chips were fried to an incredible hardness in oil that must not have been changed for days and days. Normally, this would have been my cue to get the hell out of there, but we had a gift certificate. Next up was their pathetic attempt at Coctel de Cameron. The shrimp were tiny, briny, and had clear evidence of freezer burn. The sauce that they came in was very thin and tasted like watered down Clamato. And, beside the dozen or so shrimp, there was almost nothing else to this 10 dollar entree. No avocado, no celery, no tomato, no cilantro, no lime, only a small amount of shredded cabbage and chopped onion. Terrible waste of money. Then, there were Huevos de Colorado, which I ordered red and over-easy as always. They overcooked the egg, not a big deal, but it also tasted old, like an egg that has been kept too long. The red sauce they used was actually thick and orange, and seemed to be some kind of gravy to which red chile had been added. Pretty nasty. On the side were crusty beans and a tortilla that splintered apart when bent. Finally, I got a carnitas and refried beans burrito. This was probably the best item I had, but it was still disappointing. It was TINY. And, the only part of it that was not dried out was the huge chucks of fats I bit into occasionally. It tasted fine, but damn, what a horrible way to present food. You may have noticed that I ordered three entrees. Well, their portions are very small. In fact, I didn't even have leftovers. This makes their already high prices even worse of a deal. We spent $45. On lunch. With no leftovers. What the hell. Fortunately, we didn't spend any of our own money here, and we never will. I want to start by saying the food was great, always fantastic. However the abuse from lorenna made this a 2 star. She began our experience by cursing in spanish about a customer. Don't assume white people don't speak spanish. She was blatantly rude to us, didn't give us all of our order, and gave us lots of attitude. She is always fighting with customers in both english and spanish, i won't go back if shes working. Maybe she would be happier without a job, it sure seems that way. Exterior easily missed, it feels like it should have been in an episode of Breaking Bad because this place feels like Albuquerque, a little divey. The menu is surprisingly full with Mexican and a few New Mexican plates. If they are not too busy, you can customize and create your own dishes. The staff is cheerful. If not too busy, Ruben will say a friendly hello. The breakfast and lunch specials are cheap, $3.99-$5.99. Tacos and burritos are a good bet. Chicarrones, asada, mariscos, and al pastor are tasty. The shredded beef, chicken, carnitas are pretty standard, just ok. The huevos rancheros is good but substitute one side for the papas fritas. Freshly made tortilla chips and basic quesadilla are great for the non-spicy crowd. It's a great local cheap Mexican eatery with great owner/manager. read more

We walked in and there wasn't a clean table to sit at. We decided to sit way in the back at the least dirty table thinking they must have been extremely busy although there was only one other table being occupied. A young man (who is the owner's son) came out and took our order without even bothering to clear the table at all and as I pushed one of the dirty plates over he snapped at me and said he would clean it and left us with a dirty table as he went to get our drinks. He brought our drinks and took the dirty dishes, but didn't even wipe the table that was full of crumbs and was wet from the drinks before. So we decided to move to the front of the restaurant because there was a big fan blowing in the back of the restaurant and it was hard to have a conversation. He came out and sarcastically asked us if we were going to stay put or if we were going to move again. Since we had already ordered and didn't want him spitting in our food, we told him were staying put and again he said something like "well if you decide to move again, let me know." We should have left right then. Then the phone rang and someone called to complain who had been there earlier and the young man argued with him telling him "No, I did not spit in your food or put pubic hairs in your food!" As he brought out our food he apologized about the conversation that we overheard and continued to tell us about the conversation in detail which we didn't care to hear. He kept arguing with his father saying he didn't do or say any of the things we heard as another call came in complaining about the service again. Then another call came in and was accusing him of unprofessional behavior. Needless to say we won't ever be going back there again because the owner's son sucks at customer service and is doing his father a disservice by working for him. read more

I fall in love with restaurants like this. Its like a little hole in the wall, where you can get the BEST traditional style Mexican food. The lady who mans the register, is so sweet. Despite that they did not speak very good English, I still felt welcome in this little slice of heaven. The cook takes his time with the orders, which can be both good and bad depending on the person. If a lunch group took a chance on this place there could be a problem with getting back to work on time. I don't like to wait, but after finishing, I definitely was not disappointed. The burritos are massive. The burgers are mouthwatering and if you want something deliciously messy to eat, try the Green Chile Cheese fries. More downhome than gourmet, this restaurant offers very authentic Mexican dishes, including seafood, at very reasonable prices. The talapia I ordered was tasty and had a nice kick to it. My only complaint is that it came with flour tortillas rather than corn. Next time I will ask if corn is an option. The restaurant was not packed on Saturday night but it seemed to have a steady stream of mostly regulars. Someone walked in and said "Hey Reuben" and I looked behind the counter and saw that Reuben was actually doing the cooking. Or, if you prefer a burrito, the Ruben's burrito is truly a log weighing two lbs. when served BUT the flavors are wonderful. As everything is fresh made you can taste the individual ingredients. What Ruben's lacks in atmosphere it makes up for in flavorful Mexican food. My wife and I prefer Mexican because you can taste the ingredients unlike mouth searing New Mexican.
