If you don't ask for "light schmear" on your order you end up with way too much cream cheese ratio for the bagel. If you do ask for less, you get 0 cream cheese where it's slightly damp and just a bunch of vegetables between a bagel. Not to mention I paid EXTRA for lox schmear only to get none. The bagels are on point. The business itself is starting to try me. Downtown store closed today - no reason. Just a handwritten sign in Sharpie on the door. At the Cap Hill location I explained my order in words of one syllable - and repeated the order when the counter guy read it back to me wrong. "No lettuce - yes red onion!" Sandwich came out with lettuce, no red onion. Despite my repeating it TWICE. And it not being an outlandish request. Like Leo Getz's rant about drive-through service, the same can often be said for take out. We ordered two take out sandwiches, neither were toasted (even though we explicitly confirmed "toasted" at order), and both untoasted bagels were hard and stale. Of course, once we get home and discovered the sandwiches were incorrect, it was too late to do anything about it. In fairness, when I called the shop to let them know what happened the manager was kind and made every attempt to make it right, but the die had been cast. They seem to have a good variety of options, and others appear to have had better experiences when we did. I realize that in the grand scheme of things, complaining about a bad bagel is minor blip, but running a bagel through a toaster seems a fundamentally simple thing for a trendy, pricey, bagel shop to get right. read more

This place is good and I want to love it but the last time we went, my daughter found a huge wad of what I believe was cat hair? In her bagel sandwich! So disgusting. It was so big that im really surprised they missed it when making the sandwich. So maybe it was intentional? The staff are pretty BLAH. Like zero personality. No customer service what so ever. I live out of town and for the past ~2 years have been getting bagels here when we come to visit Seattle. The first time we came here was amazing. So happy to find such a delicious bagel. Always just get a dozen bagels and cream cheese. The second time, there is something weird with the plain cream cheese: it's crumbly and not smooth. The next day, it's fine. I realize they sold me frozen cream cheese. Maybe they freeze it or maybe the spot in the cooler froze it but it wasn't good. The second time I go to the location in south lake Union. Hardly any variety left. But that's ok, that happens. The 3rd time I go to the SLU location and yay, they have great variety. But they give me the wrong types of bagel than what I ordered and I don't realize it til I get home. The 4th time is great. I've learned to go to the Capitol Hill location if I want a good variety. Then today, 2 days before Christmas I walk to Rubinstein, excited to feed my family bagels. When I get home, the bagels are freezing cold, hard, dense and dry. Did something change with their recipe? Their baking process? Or did I get day old bagels? Or is just my memory of these bagels better than they actually are. My kids said they were the worst bagels they have ever had. I don't usually toast bagels that I have just bought but that was the only way to make them slightly better. I feel like these once were great bagels but the inconsistency makes me feel like I need to walk away and find a new bagel place. Sadly. Wanted so so badly to love this place as a "good bagel/bagel sandwich" is hard to come by in this town. My NK (nanny kid) threw up twice last week after having just a bagel with butter from here and I thought it may be allergy related until today when promptly an hour after eating I started projectile v*miting and haven't stopped. Can't barely keep water down and feel terrible. Something in the quality control is seriously missing here: whether that be that the bagels are either old and moldy or undercooked or the sourdough start is off; I'm not really sure. Great place for a nice hearty bagel! The staff were helpful with recommendations and the sandwiches came out quickly. The sea salt bagel was too salty for my liking but I'd be curious to try this tuna sandwich with a different bagel. We were super excited to try this place because of the great location and line down the block every day. After buying on two separate days, we've come to the conclusion that these bagels are not worth the hype. The flavors are ok, but the texture is god awful. They're so chewy, dense, and rubbery all throughout- it's like gnawing on a dog toy. A very expensive dog toy. For reference we've tried the cinnamon raisin, shallot, and plain bagels, as well as the ham&cheese and BLT sammies. Regardless of the food, I will say that the space is very clean, accessible, and bright. The staff are very attentive, kind, and following proper safety protocols. But due to the unforgiving texture of their bagels, I can't recommend this place. Unless you're looking to lose a tooth and break your jaw. read more
